Nestled in the heart of Oakland Chinatown, Tastee Steam Kitchen is a hidden gem that offers the largest and most random selection of Asian offerings I've seen. From seafood boil to sushi, dim sum to steamed seafood, and individual hot pots, there is something for everyone to enjoy. They offer daily deals, for example Mondays you get 10% seafood boil and AYCE hotpot, Tuesday you get 20% off grilled items and beer, etc. They also have an amazing happy hour special, which are offered on weekdays from 2-5 pm, where you can get $1 chicken and lamb skewers as well as $2 grilled garlic oysters. In addition to happy hour, they also offer lunch specials on weekdays 11:30-2:30pm featuring $15-16 mini pots and bento and an amazing deal on seafood boils. I came for a late Tuesday lunch with a friend at 2 pm, right in time to take advantage of their happy hour. As soon as you step inside, you are greeted by a casual ambiance that sets the tone for a relaxed dining experience. It's also much bigger inside than I expected. The restaurant was not crowded at all, and we were seated immediately. We ordered 4 of each happy hour food item and also tried the beef skewer ($5.95) and quail egg with bacon ($6.50). The latter was good, but neither of us liked the beef skewer as the meat was a bit tough to chew. From the skewers, we liked the chicken the best followed by lamb. They don't skimp on the meat either, there's a generous portion for the $1 price. Honestly, the prices were unbeatable for the quality of food served. However, I think our favorite item was actually the grilled garlic oysters. I have no idea where they source these oysters but they're the largest oysters I've ever seen!! I generally prefer to eat oysters raw but the grilled ones were were super meaty and garlicky. I would highly recommend this, especially at the happy hour price! Overall, Tastee Steam Kitchen exceeded my expectations with its delicious and cheap food and inviting ambiance. Whether you're a fan of Chinese cuisine or looking to try something new, this restaurant is a must-visit in Oakland Chinatown. I will be back to try more of their menu! read more

Really sad my favorite hot pot place broke my heart today!! My family became regulars here. We loved the AYCE, nice staff, long tables for the whole family to eat, etc. We were just here 4 days ago! Today i came with just my 2 sisters and daughters. We got the bill, paid with card and was leaving cash tip (despite them never coming back to our table after we ordered once with AYCE). The manager took the bill, looked at the receipt and came back and told us the tip was not included. He kept showing us the tip was not included and pointing at the suggested tip section. We were confused and felt like we were misunderstanding but he left the receipt on the table and watched us for a while until he finally took the receipt and yelled us at saying "WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? YOU DONT LIKE THE FOOD? YOU DONT LIKE THE SERVICE?" We were completely caught off guard because we 1. felt like we were being forced to leave a tip. and 2. we had the cash for tip but because we didn't put the tip on the receipt it was a problem? Extremely disappointed in this and my family will no longer return here. Also, the last 2 times i've gone they told us to leave a 5 star review for a free fried rice - something to think about when looking at these reviews. read more

My group and I really enjoyed our time at tasty steam kitchen. The service was amazing. Amy was very attentive and she was able to suggest some amazing options. Everything was absolutely delicious super fresh premium quality meat and did not take long to cook. We were very hungry And we were able to sit down and quickly enjoy our meal so it was a relief to not have to wait long. The ambience is great. The booth seating is lovely. Tastee Steam Kitchen must have an identity crisis. Teacher- Do you want to be a dim sum spot, a cajun boil, hot pot, sushi resturant, skewers, or steam kitchen when you grow up? Tastee- Yes! Walking in you ask yourself, "am i at the right place?" Yes, yes you are. This is the second time I've been here and it still amazes me how vast the menu is. We decided to do the shabu shabu (they have revolving discounts each day for different things). The hot pot menu offers all the essential meats and veggies. The quality of the meats is very good, id say its better than those popular hot pots (seapot). If this restaurant was located on the other side of the bay, it would blow every other hotpot place out the water. Their prices are very reasonable and quality is way better than most. Tastee Steam Kitchen is a "tastee" one-stop-shop for steamed or cajun-style seafood, hot pot, skewers, dim sum, and sushi. I most often get the mini hot pot or AYCE hot pot and would recommend both. For the mini hot pots, the Szechuan Spicy Pot is my favorite, with plentiful pieces of fish and beef swimming in a spicy soup. The Satay Beef Pot has a garlicky and sweet broth and is good as well, although I don't care for the grainy taro. For AYCE, I would recommend the Hot & Spicy and Herbal Chicken soup bases. They're flavorful enough such that you really don't need a sauce, but I do appreciate their expansive sauce bar. The meat quality is decent, and while I do like the fatty melt-in-your-mouth prime beef, my favorite is the sole fillet with its buttery texture. The skewers here are also good enough to satisfy a craving. The chicken, beef, and lamb skewers were generally well-cooked and juicy, but I left wanting a bit more spice and char flavor. The restaurant's interior is quite large and surprisingly well-decorated, so it makes for a nicer, quieter spot in Chinatown to bring family / guests or even catch a game on their TVs. I do think they are understaffed at times, so you may need to proactively flag down waiters. Finally, be sure to check the signage and menus for their monthly food and drink specials! read more

Best hotpot in the east bay! The soup was flavorful and tasty. There's so many sauces to choose from as well. Not only are there lots of hotpot ingredients you can also order a lot of hot foods, dimsum and more on the menu. I highly recommend the AYCE menu. It even comes with a free milk tea! The Oysters were just OK, garlic baked oysters, I asked for a side of lemon which enhanced the taste. But overall good food happy hour prices if the above items. This review is solely for the boba drink I tried, not for the food, which I have not tried yet. Anyway, I ordered a jasmine milk tea with boba with no high expectations. For about $6, I felt like it was pretty good for what I got - the milk tea had a good creaminess to it, which I liked, but it did had a slight bitterness to it, which I did not like. I Went there on a date last night an hour before they close and our experience was EXTREMELY TERRIBLE, we went for what they mainly advertise for which is shabu and that wasn't available "bummer" then my date wanted to try a sushi roll but of course no sushi served after a certain time ..... ? Ok sure , so we looked at the rest of the menu and majority of the items we ordered wasn't available either. Seriously ?? OKAY .since I'm a foodie I ordered 9 different items. Food arrived and I Wasn't impressed at all by anything we got served. In a matter of fact the short ribs skewer was dry and chicken wings were insanely salty and dry . Food arrived and 5 mins after we ordered and then the server drops the bill right away . 5 mins later he says we have to close and I can pack your food to go. What da .? We didn't even finish 20% of what we ordered and we are getting kicked out. Really ? Why even seat us and serve us when you don't want us to sit and eat what I'm paying for.. really ruined our experience there. Absolute low standard food and terrible service. It's a joke. I highly suggest going to a hot dog cart than this joke restaurant. Never ever going back and i don't recommend this garbage place. read more

This place is a hidden gem of oakland! I have been to many hotpot places but i have to say this is one i will definitely go back to if given the chance. The dining experience, the food, the ambiance everything is so fun and great! For this restaurant you could choose to do AYCE (all you can eat) hotpot, individual hotpots, grilled or steamed meats, sushi, bentos, donburis, noodles, dimsum, seafood boils, and so much sides and appetizers! To have THIS many dinig options in one place? Amazing. Service was decent, dishes came out relatively fast and the staff was very on top of getting things done. The place is very well kept and the inside is really nice. Very trendy place that would be ideal for group hangouts! I personally tried their mini hot pots and steamed clams. -The steamed meats are typically steamed at your table by a waiter if you order multiple dishes. The dish of clams was pretty large suitable for 2-4 people. The clams are just manila clams i believe but they are quite flavorful and you can also use some stuff at the sauce bar to flavor it yourself. -mini szechuan spicy hot pot: VERY tasty! I would say the meal is pretty heavy, probably can leave with extra leftovers and be pretty satisfied. -mini satay beef hot pot: YUMMY :)! I would have to say i was surprised by this one. It was super flavorful and savory. Has a slight sweetness to it as well and doesn't feel too heavy -mini mixed mushroom and chicken hot pot: delicious, this dish has lots of enoki mushrooms and chicken and the broth is light but filling -mini chicken and pork stomach pepper stew pot: Probably a favorite for me! The pork stomach is very tender and soft, the chicken complements the broth so well with the vegetables and everything else. This is a hotpot broth you will probably finish in a sitting. (: very light broth but flavorful and filling nonetheless If given the opportunity I would visit again and try out more things! But this place was well worth the visit and a great place in the oakland chinatown! The AYCE can be a little pricier than most other AYCE hotpot places but the menu seems to have lots of variety of ingredients. If you're looking for a nice place to drop by without so much traffic, worth the visit! read more
