Everything about Tasty Goody Chinese screams workmanlike, from the "1982 Called and Wants Its Decor Back" look to the rib-sticking, lunch-pail sized portions the friendly staff lavishes into every bowl or combo plate. I arrived hungrier a duo of teenage boys, ordered a three-item combo including all fried rice (no chow mein), Kung pao chicken and a double portion of their BBQ pork, aka Char Sui Pork. The BBQ pork recipe at the Tasty Goody chain is so good that I didn't even blink at the $1/portion surcharge... I, did, however blink once or twice at the slovenly state of the restroom...an anachronism that screams subterranean Bronx rather than present day La Verne. Under the flickering, jaundiced hum of a single fluorescent bulb, a badly scarred wooden door serves as a canvas for relentless local graffiti artists, who've desecrated this supposed sanctum with bold, black ink that culminates around a rotund gangster defiantly screaming his gang's tag... his wide, hollow eyes mocking viewers w/ his insolent grin. The urinal clings to a wall of clinical tiles, strained and weary. Its chrome fixtures glint against the yellowed, peeling paint behind it. It's filthy basin looks like it hasn't been flushed since 1996. Please, Tasty Goody Mgmt- I realize times are tough, what w/ soaring supply costs and obscene fuel prices...but perhaps you can consider throwing a fresh coat of paint over the graffiti along with a fresh reglazing of that poor, destitute urinal? Fellow Yelpers!! Don't let my two paragraph "toilet tantrum" deter you from visiting Tasty Goody! This has to be the best chinese takeout place I have tried ever! It was my first time here and the service was super good and fast the lady up front was very kind and friendly too. I chose to dine in and it was very nice and peaceful as well. The food tasted amazing I never like chow mein but this place makes it perfect. I got the broccoli beef and some orange chicken and both were absolutely delicious and filling especially for the price! Wow. As you see from my pic this place packs the container almost to the point that they couldn't close it. I went with the 2 item combo which you select fried rice, noodles, or combo of both the make your entree selection. I did chicken with green beans and bbq pork. The fried rice was good but a little salty for I think the browning agent is soy sauce. The chicken with green beans were good for the beans still had crunch. The bbq pork was really good and tasty as per the places name. There are a lot of seats/tables in the restaurant so you can eat there but they pack it to go. The lady behind the food counter was nice. The basic set up is you order at the counter so you can see what entrees they have to offer. read more

It's been a couple of years since I last came here. The dine in option is very dated so we only do the to-go option. So the good is the portion size is huge - staff is friendly and food seems fresh - lots of options - the not so good is the food quality. My wife is not a fan and has not been happy with the last time we went. I ordered bbq chicken, pork, mushroom chicken, chow mein and white rice. Food didn't sit well with my digestive system. There are so many nice things to say about this place. I've been going there for over ten years. The portions are incredible. Their rice noodles are light and delicious. Our favorite is the shrimp wanton soup made fresh. As a matter of fact, many items are made fresh. So if you feel you don't want something that's been sitting, have them make something fresh for you. I came here on a not-so-busy Sunday afternoon. The ambiance is decent, spacious and quite clean. Their food selection today was pretty limited and did not have a variety of choices. Hopefully on my next visit, I will encounter more options. I opted for their String Bean Chicken, Black Pepper Chicken with Fried Rice. My 2-item plate was a little above $12, but their portions are huge! They're pretty generous because they pile up a mountain of your entrees. I was not able to finish my order but I was glad to take the rest home. I feel quite satisfied when I support local Chinese fast food places like this. read more

I've been going to this place for at least 20 years and the new ownership it's not The same. I ordered two large three item combos and when I got home, I noticed that the shrimp that we were charged extra for was very small portion so I called and asked and they said the shrimp portion is eight pieces and I said that seems wrong how much is in the regular three item combo and they said eight. I asked why I was being charged more when the portion side was exactly the same and the gentleman just stumbled on his words and couldn't give me an answer and just said well. The other items are larger, but if you're paying for a larger combo, then all three items should be larger than the regular portion or I shouldn't be charged extra for getting shrimp. The combo had so much noodles and rice that it seems like that's what you were getting. Also, the cream cheese wontons have had the recipe changed and they're awful. They used to be savory cream cheese and now they taste like cream cheese with sugar and it looks like a cheap version of cream cheese to say we will probably not be going back. read more

Since the owner Johnny departed this La Verne location isn't the same: Recently ordered one of my favorites, shrimp fried rice, sad to say it was horrible tasting: The cook must have had a bad day: rice was so dark, salty, no onions, vegetables, etc., just Old tasting dark rice. The other food appeared to be dried out or re-cooked so I didn't order any other dishes. Very sad I enjoyed that place for over 20 something years, obviously they didn't take any steps from the previous owner on how to keep the foods looking fresh and how to make their items taste as good as they did in the past. read more

WALK IN ORDER. I came because I was craving tasty goody. I've had the one in Covina many years ago and remembered how great it was however, I was not in the area so I went to YELP and found this location nearby. It is located in a shopping center with plenty of parking for all. It was my first time here, as I walked in I asked the people waiting there where I should go to start my order since I was so shy to look up and the kind customers guided me and told me to go to the very right. Then I looked up and saw a sign that said order here (silly me). There were two female workers already working on orders, one of them greeted me and took down what I requested. I wanted white rice, chow mein, green bean chicken, and I wanted to try the black pepper chicken. The black pepper chicken was going to be a bit of a wait and I agreed to wait because I had the time. So I waited about 15 minutes, then the Second Lady called me up to pay for my order. I noticed the rice they put in there was no the white rice but the fried rice so I asked her to please put the white rice for me. She did it however, it felt as though I was in the wrong so I asked if I need to say it a certain way for me to get that next time? She said to say "Steamed rice" because when I say white rice it is the fried rice they have, so I said I'm sorry and thanked her for the clarification so that I know for next time :) The inside looked nice, it is definitely a good spot to come take your lunch break at. I paid $12.12 cash for this to go plate. I noticed I did not get a fork or napkin like they normally put in :( she also did not ask me if I wanted any sauce (now that I think about it, she asked everyone else that she rang up but me) Now time to open the box..... and WOW, it was filled up. They really packed it in there. The white rice was great, the noodles were okay only because they tasted like they've been sitting there for a while, the green bean chicken was my favorite it was so flavorful however, I did not like the black pepper chicken - to me it did not taste good. I would definitely go back for the white rice and green bean chicken dish. I would like to try other dishes like the teriyaki chicken, orange chicken, since I overheard the other 4 customers get those - they seemed popular. Overall I give it a 3/5. It was my first time here and I was disappointed in the lack flavors of the noodles and black pepper chicken, I also did not get the fork and napkins or get asked if I wanted any sauce like everyone else did. I think it was because of the whole white rice situation. I may be a rookie at ordering rice...so make sure if you want white rice you say steamed rice. Food was old and cold- it tasted like it was just sitting for a long time - the portions were decent size but the taste was not goody

I love this place! The food is wonderful and when I order the eggplant/tofu they always make it fresh. I order a bowl of fried rice and the eggplant/tofu and they pack the bowl so full it makes two meals for me. The people are so nice and are always friendly. The place is decorated with old fashioned Chinese decorations, giving it a very homey feel. Highly recommend this place for a great deal and good food! read more

I come here quite often but obviously I missed a lot since my last visit in Nov.... I walked in and immediately noticed something different. First and foremost, I couldnt smell any of the food as I entered the restaurant (you can always smell the food when you enter), there was no clatter coming from the kitchen, no talking amongst the crew. Then I realized there were new people behind the glass display bin. A bin normally filled with various dishes, now only to be half empty. I asked the new employee behind the bin if there were new owners and he said 'Yes, since January.' So I decided on ordering the Orange Chicken even though that pan was empty. Unfortunately it wasnt the same... not as 'orangy 'or tasty. Inbfact it was kinda bland. The Chicken was nowhere Hot... luke warm at best...and the small egg rolls were hollow and also bland. I was shocked because I saw them make the Orange Chicken! But even That was different. Normally there is visible fire and steam as the food is cooked. Not this time... I was surprised when they brought it up front because I didnt see any of the firey-steamy process. Just a little stirring in the wok from the cook. The only thing that was the same was the continous running water from the faucet in the stove area. (I always wondered about that). Neddless to say, very disappointing. I'll give them another try in a month. Hopefully it'll be better. read more

I'm not sure why there are so many bad reviews here. When the original mom and pop owners were here this place was great. I'm happy to see they retired after working so hard everyday. I went a few times after the change and noticed there were more employees, but still friendly as ever. The taste changed a little bit, but the large quantity seemed to get even larger. The orange chicken was still good and the chashu pork was tender and tasty. The made to order war wonton soup was still good, but the chow mein wasn't quite the same. Still a solid fast food Chinese place worth going to. It had been awhile, but I saw how far the ratings dropped, so I had to try it again for myself. When I go to a fast food Chinese place, I never compare it to a real sit down restaurant. The service was still very friendly and everything including the chashu BBQ pork was still tender and tasty. I didn't get the fat as someone else noted. They did raise the price on the pork item as someone else mentioned, but it's only one dollar. The mushroom chicken was good as was the orange chicken. We've been here multiple and service is the same each time - efficient and no fuss. It's a Chinese fast food place and what you see is more than you can expect. they load these boxes up, it's usually enough to feed a family of 3 with a combo w/ 2 meat items. They have plenty of seating area however it's been observed that most folks tend to take it to go. Typical of any other establishment of this sort, you walk up to the counter identify if you'd like half fried rice and half chow mein, then move down the line and choose your protein choice. The cooks in the back are always busy making fresh item choices. I like that if they don't have enough to serve you then they'll ask if you want to wait 10 to 15 minutes for a new batch to be made. The chicken wings we ordered the last time were extra fresh and juicy, I like that it wasn't just sitting there for who knows how long. We also ordered the egg drop soup and it was nicely prepared- hot and comforting to our tummies. There was more than enough food to feed 6 of us that night with leftovers taken home. The ladies are brisk and to the point however are nice and will hook it up! When I'm craving good ol Chinese fast food I'll usually choose this spot. read more

This was my fave spot for years, but for the past year or so, every time I come back, it just gets worse. The quantity is still great, but the quality of the food is just not the same anymore, and now they charge extra for bbq pork? Why? Especially when it's horrible, nothing like it used to be. We got 2 plates, both with 2 items, and my total was close to $40. Ridiculous. I kept giving this place chances, but I will now find a new Chinese spot. read more

I'm surprised when I went in it was empty but I got a 2item combo noodles orange chicken and Mongolian beef. Let me just say everything was super tasty! I'm very picky with Chinese fast food and the orange chicken was light breaded and had a good crunch. The beef was extremely flavorful and delicious. I can forget the 4 small egg rolls I devoured cuz man they were not to packed and tasted great! Overall I had such a good experience with this place and I've seen other places that are more busy and yet the taste is of low quality. Not here when I went! It taste like any other standard fast food, Chinese restaurant, very similar to Chinese franchise food chains as well! The shrimp just tasted as if it was just tossed in mayo and the chow mein lacked A LOT of flavor. The cream cheese rangoons were cold and it does not come w sweet n sour sauce , they charge for that.
