I like to grab the size container that I want and then get what I want. I like getting the small container cause I've found filling it up ends up around $5 which is perfect for me. I grab like one piece of everything lol I like their chow mein and roasted pork the most and you can't skip the green beans. All the dishes are made really well and is of much higher quality than your normal take out spots. It's self-serve and the only time you come in contact with staff is when you pay. My only gripe is that most of the dishes are very oily. I was discussing with a family member about why I prefer Mongolian BBQ over traditional Chinese food. In one word, it's the ratios. I love having control over what goes into my food and in what proportion. I don't like the way Chinese food joints mix the proteins and veggies together, and then pour a random sauce on it. I like picking my veggies. I like picking my sauces. And I really love hitting a good 40% protein, 40% carb, and 20% veggies ratio. That's why I love places like Pei Wei and Mongolian BBQ joints, because nothing is written in stone. You can decide what happens with your meal at its most basic level. And New China ups the control by not even having a set price, instead just weighing the whole affair and charging you one price for it. It doesn't matter what your ratio is. You could even load up on proteins, including shrimp and beef, and it wouldn't change the price. I adore that. Again, not what I like but I'm sure there are folks who appreciate hitting those protein loads without breaking the bank. The service was great. The guy manning the grill was considerate and knew what he was doing, getting my food mixed well and quickly. He even asked how much teriyaki I wanted and took into account that I didn't want my food overly sweet. The counter person was the same way, explaining succinctly how their process worked and how it differed from other bbq joints. The ambience was good too. They had tons of tables, both inside and out. There doesn't seem to be a gluttony of people that would make me hesitate coming in for dinner or lunch for fear of having no place to sit. Could they use more? Sure. But I don't know how much more you could squeeze in without feeling like sardines. For a cheap meal, this is the place, however there are some real problems to aware of. Worker hygiene is a serious issue. I watched the cashiers with rubber gloves on mop dirty floors with their hands in filthy mop water then move to the register to handle customer eating utensils without changing soiled gloves. Ugh!! Also, all dishes are heavily swimming in cooking oil/grease. Very greasy. Not exactly a healthy meal. Spicy shrimp are often mushy. The food is fantastic. I'm never in La Verne and happened to be in the area tonight. I found it here on Yelp. My husband has never had Mongolian food so I was excited to introduce him. It's self service. You have two options: (1) serve yourself from the hot buffet with tons of options ready to eat if you're starving or (2) grab a bowl and start loading up your favorite toppings for Mongolian BBQ. Then a chef cooks it while you watch. Either option is $6.99 per lb. They accept card with minimum $15 tab. Ambiance was nice. Lots of family, individuals popping in for a meal, and couples grabbing a quick, delicious bite. Beware: there can be a lot of smoke inside from the chef cooking so if you're sensitive to that like me, I recommend the outdoor seating. My husband made a comment about how incredibly clean it was. Its been at least 6 years that this eatery opened in La Verne. Initially it was great with prices 1/2 less than today's prices. The food flavor has changed partly I am sure is due to the change of ownership about 2 years ago. I was there about 3 weeks ago and the freshness of the vegetables weren't the same. I didn't eat anything from the pre-made hot station. If you're not looking for exceptional food - and okay with quick and paying by the pound you might like this eatery.
