I love the sauce that they put on them, sweet and sticky but not overwhelming. The egg flower soup is super delicious too! When my partner and I ordered it, a worker personally ladled it into small bowls for us--really made us feel at home, super kind. It's delicious, filling, and everything you'd want in a soup. The chicken chow mein was also great! Pretty standard tasting, and they definitely did not miss on the portion sizes. We had leftovers for days after this meal. We were looking for a new place to try in Davis and Tasty Gourmet came up in our search. We heard a few good things about Tasty Gourmet so we decided to give it a try. From the moment we entered to the moment we left we felt welcomed and appreciated. We ordered Mongolian Beef, Broccoli Chicken, and BBQ Pork Fried Rice. They serve family style and let us know that we ordered plenty for the two of us. Our server recommended my favorite dish and told us it was delicious and popular which was the Mongolian Beef. She was right! It was the best Mongolian Beef I have had. She was also right that there was plenty of food for the both us. The food came out in no time, hot, fresh, and tasty! In fact it was so hot that the server warned us to be careful not to eat it too quickly. The chicken was crisp and juicy with just the right amount of sweet and savory glaze. The green beans were nicely sautéed, and the shrimp were crispy and light with crunchy candied walnuts. It was all so good there was no time for pictures, LOL! Although it was close to closing time, we never felt rushed. The interior of the restaurant is fairly basic. It's definitely all about the food. Hot pot. This is what you want and need. I ordered the eggplant and cod hot pot. I've had it a few times now, and I've ordered it both mild as well as the way it is on the menu. Both iterations are divine. Seriously good eats. Even cold as leftovers, it was still delicious. The eggplant is perfection in every bite. Soft and tender, full of flavor, and just absolutely delicious. The cod is lightly fried, and definitely not fishy tasting. The combination of the two is fabulous. If you like spicy, ask for them to kick it up a notch. Well it has a little bit of kick to it if you do not request mild, they definitely can make it spicier if that's your thing. Which ever version of spice you like, I encourage you to try this because it's that good. The honey walnut prawns are to die for. They're not heavily drenched in sauce, but they are lightly fried with a lovely glaze over them, and the walnuts are on the side. This is a dish to fight over. If you are into what I consider to be basics, like sweet-and-sour chicken etc. those dishes are delicious as well. We came to Davis for an event on campus and were looking for a nice place to eat where we could sit down and relax. A lot of the options we saw nearby were take out or fast casual, so we went a bit deeper down the list and found Tasty Gourmet. We're so glad we did! The place is in strip mall in what seems to be a residential part of Davis. It's got a nice size dining room that has a wall between where the takeout counter and register are but we sat kind of in-between, at a little table by the window. It's not fancy by any means, but clean and comfortable. The owner greeted us right away and she was so sweet she made us feel totally at ease. The menu is pretty comprehensive and I'd describe it as Chinese comfort food (to me, anyway). We chose from the smaller selection of rice plates and got General Tso's chicken and a prawn and egg dish, plus two appetizers, sesame balls and shrimp dumplings. Our food came out right away and while it seemed like a lot at first, we had no problem finishing it. The General Tso's chicken was the best I've ever had. The breading was light and it tasted so fresh. And the prawn and egg was just a simple omelet, but it was soooo delicious, and we couldn't get enough of the oyster sauce that came with. If we lived closer this would definitely be our go-to takeout spot and will be at the top of our list the next time we are in Davis. read more

Taste: We ordered three items: hot and sour soup, braised cod and eggplant clay pot, and salted fish and chicken fried rice. Everything was great! For the soup, it's on the peppery side so just be careful if you plan to get this soup. However, I thought it was fine. The eggplant dish was so flavorful. The eggplant was soaked in by the sauce and it was more on the sweeter side which is better in my opinion because I know other places have it on a saltier end. As for the fried rice, it was the perfect amount of flavor. Price: It's pretty affordable for a Chinese restaurant in Davis. Keep in mind the prices on the menu are not what it is now. It is a $1 more due to inflation, but even so, the prices were fair. The portions are also pretty large! Service: I speak Cantonese but I was always afraid to speak it to nonfamily members. However, the owner made me feel so welcomed so I naturally spoke Cantonese to her and it made her feel so happy. For those who speak it, definitely speak it to her. She's such a kind lady. For those that can't speak Cantonese, no worries, her service is still excellent and will make you feel welcomed! Overall, I am glad I ate at this place and can see why it's 5 stars. The place is clean. The atmosphere is busy with customers. I was hopeful. The food arrived steaming hot and looks delicious. However, upon the first bite, I thought the dish was intended to be used at a deer hunter's salt lick bait station! The dishes were inedible unless you regularly like to ingest 10,000mg plus of sodium in a meal. I had to ask for takeout boxes to bring the food home and boil them in plain water to leech out the salt to make the dish edible. TLDR: Come here if you like it salty or you are a deer. I was so happy to hear Maggie who use to own the four seasons gas station is finally here at a new place. Loved her food back in the day. Prices are fair, portions are huge & great for sharing. When you walk in you're greeted right away and you can sit where you like. The place is a decent size, cute and there's a small divider in the middle of the restaurant for other tables privacy. They do large party up to 12 people. They bring you menus and bottles of water right away. After you order your food they give you cutlery, bowls, and plates. Our go to item is always the fried sticky rice with Chinese sausage, hubby loves the general tao or sesame chicken. The sweet-and-sour chicken is also really delicious even though it's deep fried, it never gets soggy from the sauce. They make a really tasty egg flower soup and hot sour soup as well. Our favourite appetizer here is the crab stuff fried wonton. Can't wait to eat through the whole menu again lol. My first time trying this place and I'm so glad to have stumbled upon a gem -- an authentic Chinese food restaurant here in Davis. I came during COVID-19, so take-out only. Staff here are super friendly -- there's a family-like style/feeling to their service. They are happy to repeat or clarify any questions during the ordering process. I ordered a total of 5 items and they were all ready in 10-15 minutes -- that's fast in my books, especially for homestyle cooked meals, not fast food. Minus 1 star only because I have high standards for Asian/Chinese food. Compared to Chinese food in Asian countries or Southern California, a few dishes lacked the full flavor (see each dish's rating below). However, comparing to other Sacramento region Chinese restaurants, this place is pretty high on my list as it is pretty darn authentic. It definitely tastes like home-cooked Chinese food more than restaurant Chinese food. I guess, in other words, it means I think their food is on the healthier side. It is not drenched in heavy sauces and most definitely not high in sodium/salt content. 1) Beef Stew with Daikon Clay (pot 4.8/5) Of all 5 dishes we got, this was our favorite. Has a very rich and thick beef broth -- this dish definitely has the full flavor I'm expecting from beef stew in Clay pot. The Daikon and beef were both very well cooked and very tender. Minus 0.2 only cause I wish there were a tad more meat than tendon/fat. For those fat/tendon lovers, I think you'll love it. The sauce is bomb over rice. 2) Kung Pao Prawns (3.5/5) Not bad, but I wished the Kung pao sauce was a bit stronger + more spicy. The prawns though were well-cooked and was quite enjoyable. Note - this dish comes with peanuts, so it is not recommended for those with peanut allergies. The peanuts give the dish extra texture + crunch. 3) Braised Tofu with Vegetables (3/5) The sauce here also lacked a rich flavor, but I guess, it could be considered healthy? The sauce was light + on the watery side, so didn't stick to the tofu/vegetables very well. The tofu itself was cooked very well and had a great texture. I'd like to try their mapo tofu or sesame tofu next time to see if the flavors of those dishes are richer/fuller. 4) String Bean Chicken (4/5) I liked the chicken in this dish - very tender and thinly sliced. The string bean was good, but lacked the full crunch that I would've liked. It's not bad though. Still enjoyable. 5) Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf (4/5) The leaf wrap was soggy and thus, made it hard to unwrap from the sticky rice. The rice itself was delicious - had a good savory taste to it + there's a small piece of meat inside that's packed with flavor. A nice treat to try. Overall, I highly recommend this place. It brought me back to a sauce my grandma introduced to us nearly 40 years ago, so yeah, I really enjoyed it. Brought back happy memories and I found myself pouring the sauce over my side of rice. Like everything else, it's brought to the table hot with a warning "it's hot." So, I waited a bit before biting into the small treat. The outside is super crispy and the inside was perfectly chewy and fresh. The red bean center offered that subtle sweetness to balance this famous dim sum dish. Why would I ever eat a fortune cookie again? These sesame balls were the best way to end a meal. Bottom line: Kim and Maggie Lo are the best. If you like to go to a restaurant and immediately feel like family, go no further than Tasty Gourmet. I went with my meat eating brother-in-law and his Hong-Kong style noodle dish looked really good as well so this place definitely can satisfy both carnivores and vegetarians. On my next visit, I'll be giving some of their noodle dishes a try and ordering that sesame tofu again, but this time extra crispy with extra sauce, making sure to leave room for dessert. Tasty Gourmet is the newest spot in town for tasty Cantonese food. Good portions, friendly owner/service, and I like the menu options. I've tried a handful of dishes so far, here's my rundown. Mango shrimp: B- This is an interesting dish because I rarely see mango used in Chinese entrees. The mango is slightly cooked with the sauce and combined with the shrimp. Individually the mango was very sweet and the shrimp was cooked well, but the sauce didn't combine the flavors well. If you eat a piece of shrimp you won't taste much mango flavor. Beef stew w/ daikon clay pot: A This is just about the most tender beef you'll ever eat! Not to mention, the sauce is insanely meaty. The daikon is also very tender and cooking it in a clay pot is the best use for it. String bean chicken: C+ The flavor was good and the texture of the chicken was tender, but the green beans were a bit mushy or overcooked. Combination HK style pan fried noodles: A+ My all time favorite Chinese dish! Glad to say this place has the most generous portion of HK pan fried noodles in Davis and they give the sauce on the side so they noodles don't get soggy. Y'all went to Lagoon and posted your picture of braised beef with tendon over look fun, which sent us searching Davis for someone to cook it. Low and behold this restaurant just opened up and guess what, they have it!! The thick rice noodles are soft and fresh. Some call it "look fun," it's on their menu as "chow fun." No problem explaining braised beef with tendon either. We showed them the picture from Lagoon and the chef whipped it up! It's #5 Beef Chow Fun on their menu, but if you request the tendon, it's $1 more. So worth it because this is such a huge serving, big enough for two people! The Chinese spice was on point, it wasn't salty. They put just enough gravy for the rice noodles to slip and slide in LOL and the bok choy was cooked perfectly (ribs were soil free). The beef tendon was super tender. We can't wait to try other items next time. As an FYI, they have twenty items of dim sum, served all day. They also cook dishes with bitter melon if you're another fan :) What caught our eye, for next time, is jook with preserved egg and you can get a side of Chinese donuts or what we lovingly call, "fried chopsticks." One of the better Chinese restaurants around if you're looking for general Tso, orange, sweet N sour chicken, etc. Really good customer service also. The lady who runs it is always fun to talk too. Kind of in a tough location in my opinion. Not many other food places around that area. You have to specifically go into the complex looking for the restaurant to find it. Would probably get more business closer to downtown. This is my go-to in Davis. read more
