Loved the Tasty Pot location in Elk Grove so we had excited the same level of quality and service as well at Tasty Pot in Newark. Boy, was I wrong. Located inside in a busy plaza in Newark, parking at the store front is very limited. But parking is available in the lot, just a quick walk. This location is a little dirty, seats and table aren't cleaned. Sauces are not wiped down or filled. It's unappealing because no one bothered to clean it up and refill the sauces. The staff were nice and polite but they were not very attentive. I had to get up many times for things like having my water refilled, asking for napkins and adding another item. Wished they were more aware and attentive versus chatting among themselves at the front counter. The food was decent but not so great. Although, Newark location is much closer for me, I would hold off on eating at Tasty Pot in Newark and eat it when I'm back in Elk Grove (which is two hours away). We usually come during lunch hours but also came during dinner a few times too. I ordered the veggie soup & add a side of ramen and side of fish cake. I've been eating at this restaurant for almost ten years. In the beginning, the cabbage used to be cooked very soft, and they even served fresh raw seafood. But now, most of the dishes are undercooked and too tough, and the seafood isn't as good as before. Because some customers complained that the seafood was too raw, others who don't know how to cook it properly often end up with stomach issues after eating. Overall, I always order the Japanese seafood hot pot with rice, and the soup base is still excellent, with generous and good-quality ingredients. The only real problem is that the cabbage is just way too hard! On the bright side, the sauce is great, and they even serve complimentary green tea during lunch. The service is good, the environment is clean, and the prices are reasonable. My last two visits were a miss - I rotate between their Beef Hot Soup and Japanese Miso Hot Soup. I ordered their Beef Hot Soup on my last visit and it seems like they were skimping on their ingredients, as there seemed to have more cabbage than usual and not much of the usual ingredients. The beef also tasted a bit more chewy too. Then on the visit before that, I ordered their Japanese Miso Hot Soup and there was a good amount of ingredients, but the soup tasted a bit off, so I was not able to finish it. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's something to be aware of if you prefer unsweetened tea. We also ordered the stinky tofu, but the waitress told us it wasn't fried. My go-to order is the kimchi dumpling flavor pot and I always have leftovers. I've tried the tomato flavor and the miso flavor, but I always go back to my usual. I came here for lunch today with a few friends of mine. Of Four of us I am the only vegetarian and was excited that tasty pot has a vegetarian option. So I was excited to come give this branch a try. My lunch experience here was a whole Nother story . Compared to the San Leandro branch that I've tried maybe four or five years ago. I love the decoration within the store itself, but one thing I find it extremely weird is that they do not have a physical menu. You have to do everything through the app through your phone. One thing that is quite annoying. What if you do not have your phone with you that means you cannot eat there? Or whatever you're an older senior that does not use a smart phone does that mean they are discriminating against people that does not have a smart device? Strike number one. Another confusion was that each of us at the table order the meal through our own device. Does that mean the check comes altogether at once or do we all get separate checks, which was not clearly stated at all in any of the apps or written anywhere in the restaurant strike number two. so eventually, the ordering got done and the meal in which you get your own individual hot pot serve to you in this device in which has a heating element flame on the bottom first all the meat hot pot came for my friends. They were patient and they waited 15 minutes and still I do not see my vegetarian hot pot at all.? I told my friends to just start on their meal and I see eventually you'll come another 15 minute goes by at this point it's been 30 minutes and my friends are halfway done with their meal yet. My hot pot did not come at all. I finally waved down a waiter and ask him about my mail and my hot pot came out another five and after. I was not quite sure what they did with my hot pot, but the whole thing looks like it got smoosh or spilled somehow and they try to shove it back on the bowl. Everything was completely overcooked and it was not nicely stacked like the other hot pots. I came prior before. Somehow my vegetables cold" are completely overcooked and it looked like I have half a portion on my hot pot meal compared to the other ones. ( you shouldn't mind me I've came first or quicker basically it's just vegetables?) the taste was not good and overall the meal was pretty sad. (Looking to see my photo. ) strikes three !! Overall service was little to none, and there are reasons why you have a server taking order to make sure mishap like this does not happen. Quality control of this restaurant is poor. No crowds and the dishes came out pretty quick. I loved the hot pot heater apparatus, gonna try to find out how I can get some of those for the home. There are plenty of options for meat lovers and vegetarians, they do have a veggie broth. My friend enjoyed his vegetarian. I was happy with the kimchi dumpling dish. For under $20 (pre-tax) I was pleasantly surprised to find such a cornucopia of proteins...clams, shrimp, fish cake, Chinese, sausage, meatball, imitation, crab, pork, and I added extra beef. It was a pretty good side portion for $5.95. I was going for keto, so I asked to replace the noodles with veggies which they agreed to do for no charge,. I was a bit disappointed that it was just a cup of cabbage, but they did me a favor and didn't charge me so I didn't complain and it's not enough to Knock any stars off. It gave me a healthier low-carb soup that I was looking for. Next time I might see if I can pay a couple $$ for real veggies like zucchini, broccoli etc. The complementary glass of sweet iced green tea was a nice touch, but you don't get refills. The service was a touch slow but accommodating and friendly. The music and vibe made for a nice atmosphere. A pleasant surprise was the soybean chili paste that comes complementary in the sauce tray at the table. There are others, but the soybean one was outstanding IMO. It added just the right amount of spice and a great umami flavoring for dipping dumplings, proteins and cabbage from the soup. There were some good looking appetizers and Boba options , but we didn't try them, maybe next time. Adding on anything though will mean taking home leftovers. I think one of the main differences between Tasty Pot and its competitor Boiling Point has got to be with the condiments -- chili salt, chili oil, soybean paste, garlic soy, and the satay.
