This place slings highly authentic Vietnamese noodle bowls and other staple dishes for under $10 a pop, and we were highly satisfied with our first take-out experience. Many of my Vietnamese-American friends swear that while Pho gets all the mainstream press in the U.S., Bun Bo Hue is where it's at, so that's what I got. The broth was much less subtle in flavor than pho, heartier and meatier in an almost ramen-like way, and the noodles were thicker. The dish was absolutely chock-full of tender beef as well, like double what you get at most places. My wife ordered the Bun Kien Giang, a seafood version of the same dish, and it was also excellent, with a lovely thin broth brimming with aromatic and rich flavors. The spongy shrimp balls were the best part of our entire meal, and 100% recommend getting extra (it only comes with three). I believe there was also some kind of pork in there. We also ordered clear shrimp spring rolls... they may not be called that but they are the ones that come with the clear rice wrap. Bun Bo Hue! I love hard working Houston and their many ethnic eateries. This spot is next to a chain wing place and pretty much not much else is in this shopping center. I'm guessing the rent is cheap. Parking - plenty of it Getting there - right off US 59 Service - Good Now up until this point, I'd had Bun Bo Hue 4 times. Bun Bo Hue is like Pho's spicy big brother with the added feature of coagulated pig's blood. I had always assumed that i'd been served the real deal, until my waiter clarified if I wanted the Pig's blood. Of course I do. And this was the first time I would actually get to try it out. Like mineral rich jello, I think the idea of it is much better than actual experience. The experience isn't the great gastronomical revelation that I thought it would be. (Blood Sausage is however Aka Anthony Bourdain is Right) I can't claim an expert badge in Vietnamese culture, as I haven't grown up with it, nor made it from scratch. So I can only judge it from a non-Viet p.o.v. I've had the pho and bun here many times before. Great food at a great price. In terms of the pho broth, my standard is Pho Binh, and it's not to that standard, but it is good. The vermicelli dishes are also good. I think I come here about once a week. I work right around the corner. The food here is pretty solid. My go to dish is the bun Thit nuong cha gio. (Vermicelli and chargrilled pork and egg rolls). The bun bo que, bun suong are traditional soups besides the pho to try out when you dine here people.My twins like the wonton soup and pho here. The child's pho bowl has a fair amount of noodles unlike some places that don't give much since it's a child's bowl my girls like a lot of noodles. During lunchtime it gets pretty hectic but they are pretty fast with bringing out food quickly. The staff here are friendly and very nice to their customers. Just FYI this is located in sketchy area to some who aren't familiar with the SW side of town but I've been here a few times during the day and night time and we haven't had any issues. read more

I would say that Tau Bay is probably the best Vietnamese restaurant in the city. They have 2 locations in Houston that I know about, and the one of Hwy 59 and Beechnut is the best one of the two. I usually get the #6 which is the Pho with the raw sliced beef. The beef comes in a little bowl, and you get to take out each individual strip of meat and place it into your soup. With each soup dish, you will get a plate of soup items incuding Jalepeno's, bean sprouts, basil, parsley, lime, and sometimes another herb or two. The Pho is seasoned perfectly, and is very tasty. Best of all, the prices are cheap, you can get a large bowl of Pho for under $10. read more

Thankfully, one of our friends who is from Vietnam took us there and recommended the bun bo hue and the #22/23 (red rice with chicken chunk steak / red rice with beef chunk steak). They said the pho was OK. I ordered the #22 (chicken) and the chicken was delicious. The plate was huge. I tried a bite of the steak, and it was tender and seasoned well. If I had not passed my beef "quota" I would have ordered it. The bun bo hue did not disappoint. This is the dish our friend gets every time. They come with special round noodle, which had a very distinct texture. You can use lime to dilute the red soup. Overall, one of their best dishes. I have been going infrequently to Tau Bay in the old K-Mart on the corner of Southwest Freeway and Beechnut for several years. I grew up in this neighborhood - long before the decay and regentrification as an immigrant community. I am rarely out that way, but when I am and don't have a chance to run to Chinatown for a proper bowl of Pho, I do stop in at Tau Bay. I understand that the various Tau Bays are all owned separately so that one is not like the others. This shopping center used to be a K-Mart and, when Martha went to jail and it closed, it became a Mexican dollar store called Carnival, which has also closed. There is not much holding this center together and, it seems, Tau Bay is the anchor store. It is unrelentingly mediocre. The broth lacks punch or swagger. The noodles in the pho taste still of the shelf, soft but tasting of paste. The staff is friendly enough, but I get a wrong order as often as I get it right. The cafe sua da is always reliable. In the neighborhood, it is the only good choice in a 3 mile radius. Otherwise, if you can, drive someplace else. And the parking lot, a blacktop filled with gigrundus potholes, is the driving /walking equivalent of The Old West. Look and run for the sidewalk (or back to your car) and try not to get hit or backed over. No one is looking. read more

Racist staff!! I'm a half Japanese half Black person who loves pho and since I was having lunch in the area with a friend(Hispanic) who is a regular here, I decided to visit. First, I walked in to glaring eyes of the Asian owners and the Hispanic cleaning staff. I ordered water and appetizers while I waited for my friend to show up. They proceeded to send the cleaning staff to clean uncomfortably close to me(nearly mopping my toes with bleach water). They took forever for the appetizer spring rolls(10-15mins on a less than 20% occupancy day). Ironically as soon as my friend who is a regular sat at my table, they brought out the appetizer. I asked for chopsticks being Japanese but the owner(grandmother) who dropped off the appetizer refuse to hear my "excuse me"(twice) and "May I have chopsticks?". They finally brought the chopsticks out when my friend asked for me on their next visit to the table. My friend was surprised to see that the spring rolls were dry. I then noticed that they had given me a dirty bowl when I noticed dry noodle crusts on the bottom of my bowl. I was highly disappointed. This place is hole in the wall goodness, with decent service, and a quick in and out for lunch. Servers speak english, so if you're craving for Viet food but don't want to deal with ordering in broken Vietnamese, come here and you'll feel right at home. 5 stars for the bo luc lac because its just that good, but I can't speak to the rest of the menu, because I literally ONLY come here for the bo luc lac.
