    Beef Satay Lunch Special
    Angel P.

I've only tried this place twice but so good. There has been so much flavor in the chicken and beef. There is only one employee taking orders, bussing, delivering the dishes and I see her hard work so much. Definitely recommend this place. There just might be a slightly longer wait during rush hours. It's a small and "home-y" place on a big street. Very few good options on this block and this is one of them.

The food here is so good. They have a very pleasant ambiance, even though it is a smaller restaurant on Wilshire. The staff is pleasant and the service was great. We had movie tickets, and the waitress made sure we got our food and check as quick as possible which we really appreciated. The food was delicious without being too oily. I've already been back again, and I think about it weekly as a possible go-to place for my Thai fix!

(4.5 stars but worth rounding up!) This is my go-to place for Thai food. Service is excellent and it's also got a very friendly & welcoming neighborhood vibe. Can't beat their happy hour, and all of their food is solid. Highly recommend you give it a try if you haven't already!

In the neighborhood visiting LACMA, the La Brea Tarpits or any of LA's attractions on Wilshire? Want affordable, and bang for your buck food? Tawanna Thai is definitely a hidden gem. Forget overpriced sandwiches and burgers, this place serves up hot food that keeps your stomach and your wallet happy. Upon walking in, it felt like you entered into a Thai temple with decorative figures and ambiance. From the outside it looks just like a strip mall, but don't let that fool you. Service is good. I see their regulars coming in for pick-ups. Portion sizes are huge and presentation factor was amazing! I got a huge bowl of Rad na, I mean huge! Never have I ever had a bowl that big. They also have a lunch special time period, so don't miss out. Parking here is free and if you're museum and art gallery hopping, it's a short few minute walk. Highly recommend if you're in the area for some good Thai food!

    Sweet and sour tofu

Our server was very attentive, which was nice. There was only one other couple dining in while my husband and I were there on a weekend afternoon. I had the sweet and sour tofu, which was just ok. I didn't like that it was literally sitting on top of the sauce. The presentation was just kind of meh. Also the spring rolls were good, but again, on top of the sauce. And you only get two, which are cut in half to make it look like more... My husband got a curry noodle dish, but he didn't like the texture of the noodles. He said they were kind of vegetable-y. Maybe not tender enough. Had a relatively good experience here but the food left something to be desired. Probably wouldn't come back.

The regular menu is quite expensive with the cheapest at $17 for appetizer and salad options and most expensive at a whooping $80. The lunch menu was more affordable but still on the pricey side $21-$32 with add on options. The waitress was taking our orders and what surprised me was with my co-worker ordered the pad see ew and the waitress asked her how spicy she wants it. I was aw shocked. I'm not a Thai food expert but I do know pad see ew is a noodles dish that's offers a sweet soy sauce flavor. Never served spicy. I didn't get to try the dish but when I asked my co worker how it taste she said it was spicy and not sweet at all. I'm not sure that was an authentic pad see ew. I ordered from the lunch menu and got the tumeric chicken, with steamed vegetables and paid extra $7 to substitute for a papaya salad. I asked for #2 spice level but it was not spicy at all. Other co workers said they asked for medium but it was way too spicy. So it looks like their spicy levels are inconsistent. I'm not sure how this restaurant can justify the prices with the quality they are serving. Probably won't be back. Service was mediocre. Didn't offer to refill our waters. The rice was piping hot and the mangos were sweet and soft, drizzled with a generous serving of sweet coconut milk. I went close to closing so the staff could only offer me takeout, which was fine. They were friendly both over the phone and in-person when I picked up my order. I'm only dinging it a point because of its high(er) price point. I would be down to go back again to try out their entrees next time though!

My wife and I came for my birthday outing (she surprised me). Thai is always a "go to" and when we hit LA it's food time. My wife said probably the best she has ever had - crispy, creamy, actual crab sightings in the filling - loved it. Green curry - loaded with ingredients and aromatic and enticing. Eggplant, bamboo shoots lots of meat, veggies - and the curry underneath was loaded with flavor. Medium spice hit just right (I can handle Thai hot but I am taking it easy ok??) Drunken noodles - but an udon version? Let's try it - loved it! Again - plentiful meat, basil fragrance wafting to my nostrils, spicy sweet and savory blended sauce - fantastic. Verdict? Solid 5 on all hands. Service, ambience, food, value... You won't be sorry.

I felt like I came to eat and my mom's house. They take Debit Card and Apple Pay WITH a pin only. I forgot my wallet and paid with Apple Pay. It did not have a place for tip which made me feel awful. At the end I apologized and she was like "it's ok, next time." And she was genuinely fine with it. She reassured me not to worry about it. So I'm determined to come back to tip her because if anybody deserved a tip it was her. I ordered Pad Thai with tofu- I like to order peanut sauce on the side and the woman found it interesting and struck a non judgmental conversion about it. I could really tell she was genuinely curious. This was my favorite dish. It was good. I also ordered spicy fried rice with tofu and spicy panang curry with vegetables. I chose 4 out of a 6 for spicy and it was not spicy at all for me. The rice was fine, nothing extraordinary and nothing bad. The panang curry was yummy. I don't know if it's regional but it was very light in taste and light in thickness. BUT I enjoyed it for what it was. Felt like I had gotten home made chicken soup or something like that comforting and not overly processed. Maybe it's because I ordered it with no protein and just vegetables. I ordered a lot of food so I explained to her that I was going to eat some and take the rest to go. When she brought the food she brought it nicely packed without a bag. She also brought me a real plate and utensils to eat here. She let me know that when I was ready she'd bring a bag which I thought was thoughtful. She also made sure to say "take your time, no need to rush. We close at 8" and it was 5pm. Again, it felt genuinely nurturing, she wanted to make sure I felt taken care of and welcomed. It meant a lot because I was frazzled from forgetting my wallet and from having a hard day at work. This was my first time here and it won't be my last. There is a small lot on site. Both dishes were absolutely delicious--fresh, flavorful, comforting, and beautifully prepared. Honestly, I wish we had more time because we had another appointment downtown. I would have loved to try more dishes and definitely dessert! Our server was wonderful--friendly, attentive, and incredibly professional. He checked on us at just the right moments without ever feeling intrusive. The service was as impressive as the food. The restaurant has such a warm, relaxing atmosphere. I especially loved the beautiful ceramic water cups with bird designs--they were so unique and charming. Even the water tasted wonderful! I'm thrilled that Au Lac is still thriving after all these years. If anything, the food tasted even better than I remembered. I certainly won't wait another 12 years before coming back. In fact, I was so impressed that I convinced my husband to come with me next Saturday for dinner! I've tried many vegan restaurants over the years, and Au Lac remains my absolute favorite. My favorite on the Westside is Variable Café, but if you're willing to drive a little farther, Au Lac is on another level. I can't recommend this restaurant highly enough. And as someone who works in production and knows that things never go as planned, I'm generally the first to give someone the benefit of the doubt when something goes wrong. What I judge is the response....which is what prompted my original review. Several of my reviews here deal with that response rather than an isolated incident, and that's where a company's true colors shine. It isn't when everything is running smoothly when that recognizable critic is present (and also my objection to having a clear photo as requested by Yelp), but when the unexpected happens to an otherwise anonymous customer. How the staff manages their response when a valid complaint is made make all the difference, and unfortunately it took taking my complaint public to get a response, but yes, they came through in the end and I'm happy to recommend them again.
