I would give a score of zero if possible. This was my fourth visit after going in a couple years, as this store is far for my family and me The claw machines are a complete scam. We were attempting to win a keychain, but during our first attempt, we realized the claw did not extend far enough back to reach the remaining keychains. When we asked the employee to simply move the prizes forward so they were reachable, he refused. The drinks were consistently under-filled. The Black Tea Cheese Cream was visibly an inch below the brim of the cup. The Durian Sago, was very obviously under filled as shown in the picture. When we questioned the employee about the durian drink, he said that he had forgotten to fill it up all the way. It was so obvious that he should have noticed when he put the cup into the sealing machine or even when he gave it to us. Not only that, the drinks were disappointing. Before it tasted authentic and with actual tea. Now for the black tea cheese cream drink, it tasted like milk with sugar. I ordered some drink which had some fruit pieces, but the drink itself was not very memorable compared to other places we visited that weekend. Been here a few times and have enjoyed the drinks. The first time I came, I tried the purple yam peach gum latte and quite honestly, I didn't care for the combo of ingredients and flavor. Thankfully I've been able to come back a couple more times since then. There is quite an extensive drink menu and unique. Their brown sugar milk teas and regular milk teas are different from most milk teas. There is a rich tea flavor and you can taste that the tea is fresh and authentic. Even my mom liked the milk tea, and she usually doesn't care for milk teas. I would say it's perfectly sweetened as well. The boba are different from what I've tried before. They seemed a bit oddly shaped and more chewy yet flavorful than other places...perhaps it's the way they prepare it since it sounds like they try to caramelize the boba I really loved their guava grapefruit tea! It's super refreshing and is seriously one of the best fruit drinks I've had. You can taste a generous amount of real bits of grapefruit it in. I felt like there was so much care and energy that went into the drink. It's the real deal and you can tell they definitely use quality tea, cane sugar and real fruit. It doesn't taste like the artificial cheap syrup flavors that some places use. A bit of a warning though... don't drink this in the evening unless you want to stay awake! I only drank maybe 1/5 of the drink but the tea was so strong that it kept me up until 4am! Only downside is that it's bit more pricey for the drinks here but considering that it's more authentic and quality ingredients, it makes sense it would cost more. The staff is very nice and helpful. I didn't order food at this location. I used the kiosk to order since there was no counter person at the time. I ordered Thai tea boba one of the most popular items on the menu. After I finished paying, the lady at the front counter appeared and informed me that they just ran out of it. What a bummer!! She turned around and offered to substitute for other item. The last time I came here was right before the pandemic and it looks like they've relocated the place to look even nicer! This establishment is tucked away and if you're not paying attention, you may miss it like I did the first time. It has a parking lot in the back, but the entrance is not big. It's a quaint little house with front and back doors. This place may have "tea" in its name, but what's often overlooked and under appreciated are the hand made pastries. My wife makes similar pastries so I have an idea of how much effort it takes to make them. My favorite ones are the purple yam mochi and the salted egg yolk. Tea So takes the place of what was once Sweet Spot. They specialize in mochi-filled puff pastry. Honestly, I didn't even know this kind of dessert existed until this place popped up! Definitely a novelty item. We had the black sesame, purple yam, and black sesame. They also had durian as well for those who are more brave-hearted. The mochi puff pastry had a nice texture with flaky puff pastry on the outside, a layer of filling, and mochi in the center. The black sesame was definitely my favorite, but I appreciated the subtle flavors of the taro and purple yam. At $4-4.50 apiece, these puff pastries are a bit pricy, but like I said, you don't see this kind of dessert often. Also had a stab at the original milk tea with boba, which honestly wasn't anything to cry home about. The boba was slightly overcooked; not mushy, but no bite to it. Super cute spot inside of a house! I happened to have lunch across the street at Hermanos Verdes, and decided to take a food coma relieving stroll around the neighborhood. The area has changed a lot from back in the day! I remember in HS, CV Blvd. was the crack spot on Fri and Sat nights for cruising - pretty much the Bay Area version of American Graffiti - but now the district has become much more diverse. Anyhow, as I walked by and noticed this interesting little abode, I couldn't help but drop in. My current default measuring stick is jasmine milk green tea with red bean, no ice, no sugar. The version here passes with flying colours! The bobaristas are also friendly, and greet you with warm smiles. The patio area outside is awesome for sunny days, and there is also some extra space in the front from former parking spots that I assume could be used for even more seating if necessary. It is almost unfathomable to think a few years back that Castro Valley would become a hotbed for boba shops, but here we are today with this one mile radius having at least six or seven establishments, many of which would hold their own in any Asian enclave. First review of 2021 for me, let's go! With pictures spotted on Facebook and Instagram, new boba spot in Castro Valley is a must try! From an old mom and pop bakery to Cloud 9 to Sweet Spot and now Tea So, let's see what's new. Parking is still as small as before (but I think I've gotten better at maneuvering back there, no more 13 point turns for me haha). The menu is minimal (probably would grow), but I do agree a concentrated smaller menu just means a few good items over quantity; a good start for now. For grand opening, there's the deal for buy 1 get 1 milk tea (I added boba to it). They were out of the mochi pastry so I'll have to go back another time to give that a try. The egg puffs are made to order, smells great in the cafe and super fresh. As for a short history of the shop, the owner started with making the puff pastry (Chinese Flaky Pastry 酥皮) as a delivery to now having a store front. The pastry is called a 'so', hence the shop name of Tea + So. There are two kinds of layered Chinese Flaky Pastry, the Huaiyang style (淮揚酥皮) and the Cantonese style (廣式擘酥). The pastry made with Huaiyang style are more common and can be found in streets and shops in China, whereas the Cantonese style pastry snacks are more of a specialty found in dim sum restaurants. The kind here seems to be of the Huaiyang style with mochi inside of it. All the mochi pastry are handmade with love and seems to sell out quickly! The egg puff I inhaled quickly as fresh and warm is the best, got a good crunch with a soft/fluffy inside. Not too sweet but good egg flavor, definitely will get again for me. I really dislike eating in my car as it's my baby and I'd like to avoid crumbs when possible, but I couldn't wait to eat my egg puff. All new boba shops, I get the milk tea as a base to see how it is. First sip, I get a sweet slap to the face (note to self: sweet adjustment to less sweet next time). Strong milk base, but the tea flavor doesn't quite come out to me - more an aftertaste that coated my tongue. Few sips more, there's the tea but not a mellow mix. Makes me think of over steeped tea. The boba was very soft without much of a bite, being end of day though - I'd assume it was sitting for a bit or overcooked. As for now, not the tea for me but I'll see again in a few months for kinks and inconsistencies to work itself out. For the passion tea with fresh fruit in it, it's a light and sweet drink...but definitely adjusting the sweetness again. I personally enjoy a stronger tea flavor that mixes well with sweetness for a refreshing drink. Final Thoughts: Owners and employees are very nice and eager to talk about their products. I will be back to give the mochi pastry a try, waiting a bit later for another try of the tea! 3.5/5 for now, round up to 4, cannot wait to see how this shop grows. read more

Tea So takes over Sweet Spot's old location in Castro Valley. I spotted this on Yelp before they opened. Once they opened, I immediately went to check it out. The place has been repainted, and the parking in front of the store no longer exists. The interior is relatively the same, and there is still a space outside in the rear for outdoor seating. The staff were friendly and attentive as I looked over the menu. I ordered a Passionfruit Tea, and I learned I would get an Original Milk Tea for free. I also ordered some Mochi -- Taro and Purple Yam (Ube). I got the Mochi immediately, and my drinks soon followed. The Mochi were good, as were the drinks. I got a strawberry matcha latte that costs $7.25 which I feel is pretty inflated but anyway... when I got the drink, the matcha was super light so all you can taste is pretty much milk and there was a very thin layer of strawberry puree on the bottom. A great treat if you're walking around downtown, but easily missed if you're driving down Santa Maria Ave. I was most excited to order their egg puffs! We got earl gray milk tea (50% sugar, 25% ice, boba) and oolong milk tea (25% sugar, 25% ice, boba). We devoured the black sesame egg puff before going home! It was warm and delicious! The milk tea actually tasted like tea! The boba was a bit on the hard side, but had great flavor. Overall, I would definitely come back. The boba is not bad but not good. I would give it a 4/10. Reason being is 1) not creamy and thick enough. Just felt like tasting water and sugar 2) tea flavor isn't strong 3) boba had a slight sour after taste and is kind of on the harder side. Other than that, the place is clean and service was nice and quick. Pretty empty and quiet when I went. Overall, I prob wont go back bc it isn't my style and ratio of milk tea I like. read more

Tea So is set up in what seems to used to be a house. There was no line when my husband and I arrived and the cashier was pleasant to interact with. We waited quite a while for our egg puff, to the point where we wondered if they forgot about us. There was only 1 person ahead of us ordering French fries so not sure why there was such a long delay before we got our order. We ordered: Taro Mochi - my husband enjoyed this and said it reminded him of desserts he'd eat as a child. I was expecting more of a Japanese mochi, but this was quite different. The taste was mild but a true taro flavor. The mochi itself is quite beautiful! Matcha egg puff - this was really disappointing for me especially considering how long it took to get it.The egg puff came out borderline burned - completely crunchy all the way through. I think it was left in the waffle iron way too long. I didn't even finish 1 puff but my husband was a good sport and ate a few pieces. We got less than halfway through before tossing it. read more
