    Another angle of the shop

The Castro Valley Bear Papa's is located in the Castro Valley Marketplace (a type of food hall/local market). It is a nice location since there is a variety of foods, shopping, and seems to draw in a variety of crowds. There is communal seating areas and tables shared by all the shops, so seating can sometimes be a challenge depending on the time of day/crowds. The staff was very helpful. It was later in the afternoon, but they still had all their flavors available for the day (though their quantities were running low). You choose a flavored Cream Puff, and then the filling. They have a rotating daily schedule of fillings. This daily rotation schedule seems to be changed weekly. With a variety of combinations, this dessert spot might be satisfy your "after meal" sweet tooth.

Beard papas is located in a small indoor shopping center/mall. There is a parking lot with plenty of parking and also street parking if you prefer. I have been a huge fan of Beard Papas cream puffs since I was in college. Their decadent puffs filled with your choice of vanilla, chocolate or the cream of the day are always ON POINT. Personally, I am a lover of the simple plain puff with vanilla cream but do occasionally dabble in other flavors like ube or green tea. I have NEVER had a puff or filing that I didn't love from Beard Papas. Highly recommend. I will always come back.

Ok this was better than I thought it would be! They've got good puff pastry flavor options and sounds like three rotating custard filling flavors each day or week. Choosing a filling was hard cuz I sampled two and they were both good! I'm curious if they'd be willing to put two in one pastry for those of us that can't decide! I may ask next time I'm there. Heck, the pastry bun itself would have probably been delicious (and lighter) even without the filling. The employee helping me was very friendly!

This location is consistently better than others I have visited. Service is excellent and friendly. The storefront is always impeccably, clean and organized. The products are very fresh and the cream puffs are freshly filled upon order. Stopped in yesterday for an Oreo cream puff filled with Vietnamese coffee custard and a strawberry puff filled with vanilla custard. Also tried the peach iced tea. That's currently available for summer and it was all absolutely delicious!

After a pretty spicy lunch in Hayward in a weekday I yelped keyword searched "desserts" and this popped up. I've had beard papas before at the Concord location but that was stand alone location making it very small footprint and size but it has everything they the bigger regular size beard papas have no difference. This one in CV is inside the Castro Valley marketplace next to Barons meats . Seri e was very friendly and fast so the food went perfect with my strong coffee from Trom coffee. If you not familiar with Castro Valley and all the spots it has to offer this is located inside so you would never even see it driving by. Now know that it's near and there is a dumpling place also inside. Ambiance inside the market is clean , and cool place to hang with lots of tables like a cafeteria style communal area.

Looking for something sweet but not too sweet? Its a little booth located in the corner of the marketplace. Lots of flavors to choose! Ube, matcha. Crispy and airy. I don't have to go to a mall anymore to buy these puffs. Lots of free parking in the back. So picking up for a party is no problem. Nice staff.

Beard Papa's in Castro Valley is easily one of my favorite sweet pastry spots in the area. The cream puffs are consistently fresh, light, and absolutely delicious. My favorite so far has been the Chocolate Banana Cream Puff--it has the perfect balance of flavor. The chocolate and banana pair beautifully, and what I loved most is that it's not too sweet, which makes it incredibly easy to enjoy without feeling overwhelmed. The shell was crispy on the outside and soft inside, and the cream was smooth, cool, and just the right amount. You can really tell they care about quality here--the fillings taste fresh, and the texture is spot on. The service was great, and it's conveniently located inside a small grocery mall. Whether you're a dessert person or not, I'd highly recommend stopping by and trying the Chocolate Banana. It's unique, satisfying, and the kind of treat you think about long after it's gone. I'll definitely be coming back to try more flavors!

So happy to learn that there's a Beard Papa's inside the Castro Valley Marketplace! Not sure how I missed it before. The lady working the counter today was so sweet and friendly, and even made sure to separate our cream puffs and let us know which ones to store in the fridge or the freezer if we aren't eating them right away. I got the original cream puff with the vanilla cream and it was so good! This is what I usually get because I love the flavor of the original vanilla cream. My partner tried the Frozen Mango Puff which has a mango yogurt cream inside. It was interesting, the cream is very tart and feels like ice cream - I would want to try another frozen cream puff flavor. Also they have cream flavors of the day, so hopefully next time I'll come on a Friday so I can try the green tea cream!

Located in the Castro Valley marketplace across from 7 Hills Bakery. Tried the specialty S'mores cream puff and the chocolate lava cake (both about $7). These definitely fulfilled my hankering for dessert this weekend.

Came here a few weeks ago when they had a promotion! Ordered six cream puffs and got a free frozen mango yogurt puff! That flavor was SOOO good!! The day I was there, their Flavor (filling) of the day was ube! I love ube so of course I had to get that filling in at least one of my cream puffs! I ordered the ube shell and the churro shell filled with ube filling. I then ordered vanilla filling for the strawberry, chocolate, cookie crumble, and honey butter shells! All of them tasted so good! I also like that they are generous with the amount of filling inside! The filling oozes out when you bite into the cream puff!

It's a little place tucked away in the corner of the Castro Valley marketplace. I've been going to the marketplace for years and never knew that this beard and Papas was here. The two ladies behind the counter were super friendly and explained all the different flavors. I loved that they had the Ube Matcha And not just the traditional vanilla and chocolate. We did get the vanilla and chocolate along with the Ube and they're all my favorite now make it a point to visit when you're in Castro Valley you will not be disappointed.

    Marie S.

Ube with matcha filling is my favorite combo. The slight bitterness of the matcha cuts the sweetness of the ube topping. Removed a star due to the cream leaking out of the puff as I was eating it. Maybe that means they are very generous with the filling!

Seven Hills Baking Co was my first stop as I haven't had sourdough since childhood. I got their classic sourdough loaf. Even though it wasn't warm anymore it was still amazing. It was quite hard to cut into with a serrated bread knife, which I'm not sure whether that's normal or abnormal for gluten sourdough. However, the inside was lovely and soft. Nice strong sour flavor, spongy dough that was almost moist (not at all dry). I want to note on the gluten free front that seven hills baking co offers a few items which they advertise to be gluten free. Though the ingredients may be gluten free, the items are baked in the same kitchen, the same oven, and then put side by side with the gluten in the display case. Furthermore I don't believe their ingredients are all certified gluten free. Therefore I do not recommend seven hills baking co for anybody with celiac disease. Do not buy your friend with a gluten allergy or celiac these items. There is most certainly cross contact.

I finally found some time to visit with my cousin on a quiet Friday early afternoon. We were greeted to a beautiful, clean, and well organized store by the kind and polite owner, Areej. The vibe of the store very much so echoed a candy store you'd find in a shopping mall, except all the sweet treats are handmade and imported from countries such as Palestine and Turkey. Areej was very kind and welcoming and walked us through each of the different sweet treats, such as truffles and Turkish delights. There are also various mixed roasted nuts options with unique seasonings, and even Dubai chocolate strawberry cups! Areej was kind and generous, providing ample samples of the Turkish delights in flavors like Oreo, Dubai chocolate, birthday cake, and even sesame chocolate! My cousin also really likes their mixed party nuts that had a great spicy kick to it from a special blend of imported spices. Because of Areej's hospitality and generosity, as well as the prime quality of the chocolate truffles, mixed toasted nuts, and Turkish delights we were able to sample, I definitely did not hesitate to take home some delectable goodies (see photos). There also were skincare products made in Palestine, and I bought this homemade rose scented olive oil soap that I'll be gifting to my friend for her birthday :) Thank you so much, Areej, for being so welcoming! We will definitely recommend to others and come back! PS: It was mentioned that in the past, many people would walk in, sample large amounts of the shop's goodies, and then rudely leave the store without buying anything. Honestly, that's so distasteful! We need to support small businesses as much as possible, and even buying as much as one tiny chocolate truffle helps sustain businesses like The Old City Roastery. Before I rattle off my reviews of the pastries that I tried I'll say that the pastries here, although laminated, have no crisp and are strictly the soft and chewy type (think Costco croissants). I prefer some crisp, but I wouldn't hesitate on returning here to try more things. - French tart: amaaazing egg custard filling. It's so milky it's almost flan-like! - Brownie fruit tart: omg prob one of my fave brownie textures; not fudgy-dry and not too-cake-like either. Nailed the custard filling as well. I'd say my fave pastry in the bunch. - Passion fruit ganache danish: deliciously tart passion fruit filling! - Sweet cheese bowtie: funny enough the sweet cheese reminds me a lot of Cheez Whiz haha (nostalgic for me) but silkier and lighter in taste. The sweet cheese is only in the center of the bowtie. - Ham & cheese: flavorful ham but could've had a little bit more of it. The cheese part tastes similar to the cheese filling in the sweet cheese bowtie. - Ube moon: mad props for ube jam actually being used here instead of just ube extract like at most bakeries that offer ube treats. I will say though that the ube filling is a bit too dense; maybe the ube jam could've been mixed with some custard to make the filling lighter. Only a couple of customers in line when I visited on a Sunday early afternoon and the display case was still more-than-half full. Okay-ish service; the lady at the cashier was primarily focused on quickly completing orders.

I have always been astounded by the beautiful pastries here at Ones, and I finally got to try it…read more Who knows how long it has been in my saved folder lol.. Though the bakery is pretty small, it was perfectly cozy with plenty outdoor seating available. There are a couple tables outside, and a bar-style seating area outside. Plus, a lot of parking spaces are available! The pastries are displayed beautifully under the warm lights of the shelf. Totally cute! Most importantly.. Instagram worthy! I got two original croissants, an orange creme brulee, and a strawberry crescent croissant. The original croissants were perfectly crunchy, and not too airy that there isn't anything inside the shell. Pretty dense in you ask me, and I love it that way! The orange creme brulee was really pretty. Caught my eye in the crowd! Though I thought that the croissant-style bread on the outside of the pastry was not crispy enough, the creme brulee definitely had a rich orange-y aroma. The strawberry crescent was my absolute favorite. I love how the hard, dense outside contrasted with the creamy center. The strawberry cream in the center isn't too sweet in my opinion! The shape wasn't just creative, it was also so fun to eat! You'll be seeing me again!
