Beard papas is located in a small indoor shopping center/mall. There is a parking lot with plenty of parking and also street parking if you prefer. I have been a huge fan of Beard Papas cream puffs since I was in college. Their decadent puffs filled with your choice of vanilla, chocolate or the cream of the day are always ON POINT. Personally, I am a lover of the simple plain puff with vanilla cream but do occasionally dabble in other flavors like ube or green tea. OMG! When I heard there was a new location in Castro Valley, I was excited. It's in a small food store for to go only. No seating area for this shop near by. It's been here over a year, I think. Me, bread, pastries, desserts, I'm there!! Located in the Castro Valley Plaza. Parking is limited and not a good place for large or long cars but it's free. Always look out for their specials monthly on IG. I love their original and honey butter with vanilla cream filling inside but they always seem to run out of Honey Butter. It's that popular. I also tried their Strawberry, Oreo, Ube filling with plain bread. My favorite filling is strawberry cream though but they never seem to have it anymore. After a pretty spicy lunch in Hayward in a weekday I yelped keyword searched "desserts" and this popped up. I've had beard papas before at the Concord location but that was stand alone location making it very small footprint and size but it has everything they the bigger regular size beard papas have no difference.This one in CV is inside the Castro Valley marketplace next to Barons meats . Seri e was very friendly and fast so the food went perfect with my strong coffee from Trom coffee. If you not familiar with Castro Valley and all the spots it has to offer this is located inside so you would never even see it driving by. Now know that it's near and there is a dumpling place also inside. Ambiance inside the market is clean , and cool place to hang with lots of tables like a cafeteria style communal area. read more

My favorite so far has been the Chocolate Banana Cream Puff--it has the perfect balance of flavor. The chocolate and banana pair beautifully, and what I loved most is that it's not too sweet, which makes it incredibly easy to enjoy without feeling overwhelmed. So happy to learn that there's a Beard Papa's inside the Castro Valley Marketplace! Not sure how I missed it before. The lady working the counter today was so sweet and friendly, and even made sure to separate our cream puffs and let us know which ones to store in the fridge or the freezer if we aren't eating them right away. I got the original cream puff with the vanilla cream and it was so good! This is what I usually get because I love the flavor of the original vanilla cream. My partner tried the Frozen Mango Puff which has a mango yogurt cream inside. It was interesting, the cream is very tart and feels like ice cream - I would want to try another frozen cream puff flavor. Also they have cream flavors of the day, so hopefully next time I'll come on a Friday so I can try the green tea cream! read more

Came here a few weeks ago when they had a promotion! Ordered six cream puffs and got a free frozen mango yogurt puff! That flavor was SOOO good!! The day I was there, their Flavor (filling) of the day was ube! I love ube so of course I had to get that filling in at least one of my cream puffs! I ordered the ube shell and the churro shell filled with ube filling. I then ordered vanilla filling for the strawberry, chocolate, cookie crumble, and honey butter shells! The two ladies behind the counter were super friendly and explained all the different flavors. I loved that they had the Ube Matcha And not just the traditional vanilla and chocolate. But honestly you can't go wrong with their flavors! This month is banana cream!! I got their matcha and their strawberry and it was delicious! Parking here sucks it's so busy- small narrow parking lots. It's located in the market place so it already draws a crowd. I would avoid weekends and lunch if possible. Ube with matcha filling is my favorite combo. The slight bitterness of the matcha cuts the sweetness of the ube topping. Removed a star due to the cream leaking out of the puff as I was eating it. Maybe that means they are very generous with the filling! read more

I've heard a lot about Beard Papa and after walking about Castro Valley, I asked Hubby if we can stop in to get some to try! The wait was actually really long. There wasn't that many people in front of us, but we waited maybe a good 20-25 minutes before it was our turn to order. We ordered 3 different flavors. We had wanted to get more but they had sold out and after a long day we didn't want to wait to the new batch to come on. It was actually really good. Very flavorful and the cream that goes along with it wasn't too sweet. One is quite a lot, so we saved the others for the next day. It was actually good and I would come by again to get different flavors to try. The wait though was a bit long though, so we'll see when we'll come back here to order. read more

Beard Papa is a Japanese-style cream puff that is light and airy with a crunchy texture filled with various whipped cream/custard flavors that's not overly sweet. My first time having Beard Papa was at Yerba Buena in SF about 18 years ago and thought "what a strange name for a cream puff place!" since it named after the owners fluffy white beard. Hmmm... When they first opened they had a simple, plain shell or chocolate dipped with vanilla, strawberry and chocolate as fillings. They were so popular with a following that you were limited to a 6 pack. Now, they have a variety of flavors of dipped shells from Ube, matcha strawberry, cookies & cream with choice of their original filling of vanilla to their special flavors that change each week and can buy as many you'd like! I'm more of a purist and stick with their original but discovered their honey butter shell that's tender yet crisp from the sugar with vanilla filling. In general, these puffs aren't too sweet (which I prefer) but the honey butter just elevates it for me. This newish location at the Castro Valley Marketplace is located to the right when you first enter. Friendly, helpful and welcoming staff. You can't walk thru without getting any! The staff was super nice and thanked me for my patience as there was a customer taking a bit longer in front of me. I ended up ordering a Pina Colada and ube filled ube cream puff. 10/10 recommend coming here for a delicious dessert! I didn't know what to expect, but it definitely surprised me in the best way possible. They serve many different flavors of cream puffs that are freshly made and the cream is always cold and delicious. The puffs are solid and don't get soggy easily. You first order the flavor puff you want. Then you choose either 1) vanilla or 2) filling of the day and they hand fill each puff upon request. They can stay in the fridge after buying, but they taste much better fresh! My favorite combination has been the churro puff with vanilla cream. The Oreo puff doesn't disappoint as well. This dessert place is a hidden gem for Castro valley. It's located inside the new marketplace on Castro valley boulevard. There is parking on the side/back of the building. I got the chocolate eclair shell. I got their vanilla filling. It was ok. I think is good to try everything once. I wouldn't try it again because it didn't have a very distinctive flavor and wasn't unique to anything else. I think maybe if I warmed it up it would have tasted better. I ate it right away but I think it needed to be warm to elevate the taste, it's not probably how it supposed to be eaten tho. The area is nice and there are seats outside. Beard Papa's in CV has changed my mind about cream puffs! I feel like cream puffs are typically a bit soggy due to the cream in the middle, but this specific location has got the texture right and it is so good. The puff itself is perfectly baked so that it has bite to it. On top is coated with a flavor. In the middle, you can either do vanilla cream or the filling of the day. I've tried honey and butter, churro, strawberry, green tea eclair, and oreo cookie crumble eclair (all with vanilla cream filling). They were all excellent. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the flavors, but honey and butter and strawberry were my favs! Also, the service was amazing too. The lady who helped us made sure to give us all the extra crunchies that came with the honey and butter. Big Luxury. Thats not just the nickname for my furry four legged friend Mr Moose, thats also these cream puffs. You can't get this type of thing anywhere and after reading reviews I wanted to see if it lived up to the hype. Huge over filled cream puffs of super high quality made to order? Count me in. I've come to love Japanese desserts - they are not overly sweet and they tend to be very delicate and special. I'm no fan of heavy duty brick 'cheesecake factory' 2000 calories in one slice type of thing. This was nothing like that. Outer shells were super delicate, fresh and beautifully baked. Toppings varied for anybodys liking. Kids might like Oreo - adults some green tea or coffee. Inside they have regular custard or the 'flavor of the day.' This keeps things interesting for regulars. I've had these 'cream puffs' from Safeway recently. They had wet soggy bottoms and the quote unquote cream wouldn't melt in my mouth. It left this film that only came off with my ultrasonic toothbrush and industrial strength tooth polishing compound. I don't need that. I don't think anybody needs that. Oh the horror. And I don't need your 'first world problems' side glance. Not even Big Luxury would eat that.... should raise an eyebrow. Big Luxury loved these on the other hand. He's a very food motivated little guy and I'm sure he would do circus acts for me for another taste in the future. That little guy loves to groom himself all day and then admire himself in the mirror. I could assure Mr Pocket Size Guy it wouldn't give him some big belly. So does it live up to they hype? I went to Beard Papas on a weekday evening as I was craving something sweet and cream puffs came to mind. It's been a long time since I tried the cream puffs from Beard Papas and I was curious to try them again. This Beard Papas counter is tucked away in a little corner inside the Castro Valley Marketplace. There's a parking lot outside but the spaces can be a bit tight. That day they had an ube flavored cream so I got that with the original cream puff shell, but all the other options were very tempting from the chocolate shells, to the matcha shell, etc. The ube cream flavor was good, a bit light in taste but still yummy and it wasn't too sweet. Each day they have a different cream puff flavor but the standard vanilla cream is always available. As often as I frequent this area, I do not go to The Castro Valley Marketplace much, so I highly surprised that there was a Beard Papa's so close by to me. Before this visit, I had only been to this food hall once - maybe like a few years ago. There was a parking lot here, so it made my pit stop here so much more easier and quicker. I was checking out their weekly updates for their filing flavors for each week, as they only offer 1 specific flavor of filling every day (on top of having their classic vanilla filling every day). I was waiting for their Matcha Green Tea filling for at least a couple of months, but they either did not have it some weeks or they have it on a day when I did not have time to stop by. Anyway, I was finally able to stop by on a day that they had it - I bought 1 Green Tea Eclair with green tea filling for myself, as well as another Green Tea Eclair with green tea filling and Oreo Cookie Crumble Eclair with vanilla filling for a couple of my coworkers, who I knew would enjoy them. I thought the Green Tea Eclair was just okay, it did not taste as fresh, as it was a bit dry and flaky compared to when I tried them in SF - maybe because it was not a popular shell flavor and it was just sitting there or something. Maybe next time, I would just get their Original or Strawberry Eclair instead. I was so incredibly excited when I saw the massive signage about a Beard Papas opening in Castro valley! I've been able to try the famous cream puffs in SF and couldn't wait to have one closer to home. Finally, the awaited day arrived and we came for the festivities on Opening day! The line for cream puffs was ENORMOUS! We were not too far back in the line but still waited a good hour at least for our order. Thankfully we brought chairs to sit in and wait. Not sure what the hold up was even tho some families bought a couple of boxes at most. In theory, the puffs were sitting in the case premade and all they had to do was fill them? But maybe bc it was the first day. Anyway, we got to try the green tea and cookies and cream puffs. They were delicious! I think I enjoyed the green tea more bc I like Asian flavors. Loved the crunchy/crisp texture of the puff itself. Filling wasn't overly sweet tho the icing was a bit sweet. With tax, each puff was about $5. Too bad they didn't have all their flavors today :( and only original filling. But understood with SO many customers today. I actually felt like the cream puffs we had today were better and fresher than the ones in SF.
