Came here twice, first time, customer service wasn't that great as I was given a look when I asked if they knew how many pieces does the calamari comes with. Second time, customer service was great. Their drinks are good, but nothing really stands out about them. Their snacks are pricey for the quality and amount that you get. I only come here because of the location, but I have found another place that sells both boba and snacks and I have found myself going there instead of this place. I've been a loyal customer of Hay Tea for years, but today was the last straw. I ordered my usual Mango Pomelo Sago at around 4:35 p.m. on March 28, 2026, and the staff didn't ask me any questions. I didn't even see them make it, and when I asked for less ice, they handed it to me and tried to "educate" me, saying it was supposed to have that much ice. I've been buying this drink for years, and every single time it's always been made with just a little ice. On top of that, the staff's attitude was terrible--they spoke so quietly I couldn't hear, and when I asked them to clarify, they gave me a very unimpressed, eye-roll type look. Got a Pink Lady Peach Green Tea SC (75% sugar) and a Signature Fruit Fusion Green Tea. Pink Lady was delicious even though some of the ice wasn't fully blended. Love that it comes with agar boba AND salted cheese for no additional cost. Huge value! Got 75% sweetness which was perfect for me. Signature fruit fusion green tea will be a skip next time. Came here on a Thursday evening and it wasn't busy. I ordered the strawberry Yakult drink with boba and it was about $7.25. It came out in less than 5 minutes and was perfectly sweet. They also included real fruit pieces which I like. The boba wasn't as sweet as I would've wanted as there was no honey coating on it but the texture was perfectly chewy. We usually get the mango pomelo sago drink with boba, which is always nice and refreshing and is one of their most popular drinks. This time we tried the fresh mango coconut milk with purple rice, which also had a star next to it in the menu. It turned out really refreshing! Light coconut milk, chewy purple rice, and hints of mango. Half sweet was good for us. The only downside was we finished the drink faster than we could the rice so there was a lot of that left over. When popcorn chicken costs almost $10 by itself from most boba places, it's a good deal. Parking situation is fairly easy with a small lot on the premises. Walking in, the spot is a relatively small with only a couple tables for sitting. The service was pretty friendly and received our order quickly. The Thai tea came out pretty good and the popcorn chicken was crispy. We added the chili powder that was available on the side counter, very useful to make it our own spice level. After giving a bad review I have been coming back here more often because of my Son. He loves this place no matter what so I had no choice but to visit this place. Calamari is one of his favorite "it tasted so good mum" every time. I kind of get tired hearing him saying that. San Leandro mainly has bigger chain boba shops so it was refreshing to see a new one pop up in the recent years . I'm so glad I finally got to try this place out because they have one of the BEST popcorn chicken I've ever had! I kid you not, it held its crispness from start to finish and didn't get soggy at all. It's seasoned well and you can also add your own spice powder they have at the counter. For the drinks I ordered the dragon milk tea and fruit fusion tea. The toppings in the dragon milk tea were not my thing, but the tea itself was solid! I'll probably opt for a normal milk tea next time. The fruit fusion was also great and refreshing, fresh slices of strawberries, watermelon, kumquat, and other citrus. Overall, Hay Tea really surprised me and I'll be returning! They share the same plaza as a laundromat, smoke shop, and barber shop so I've seen the parking lot full most of the time. Been wanting to try this place for a while now since they've opened. We got the fruit tea and the coconut milk with fresh mango and purple rice. Sadly, we didn't care for the drinks. Coconut milk was just ok but tasted bland even with 100% sweet and there wasn't enough mango or purple rice. The signature fruity tea was the first fruit tea at a boba place that I ever didn't like. If you're in a rush, don't come here. I wanted to check this place out since I've always driven past it and have never gone. It wasn't too busy when I got there but the two workers were working at a snails pace. I shouldn't have to wait almost twenty minutes for one drink. That said, the drink was delicious. The boba was a perfect amount of chewiness and it wasn't bland. Some boba places have very bland boba but not Hay Tea. They nailed the sweetness component of boba. HK Milk tea (4/5) - Definitely better than a lot of the other milk tea places that I have tried BUT their boba was really inconsistent... if their boba was more chewy and less on the hard side, this would have gotten a 4.5/5. I think they used regular milk instead of half & half so it is really strong on the tea flavor and not as creamy. Salt & Pepper Chicken Wings (4.5/5) - I was kind of nervous to order this because Yelp had no pictures and barely any reviews on this item. But I was thrilled to see how big the wings were and how juicy they were. It was extremely juicy and the flavor was on point! Wanted to love this place, but there's was a lot going on that made me cringe about the experience we had. My best friend and I meet every two weeks to workout and treat ourselves to boba. So we like to visit different shops to support local businesses and try new places. Hay Tea has been on my mind for a while, so we decided to swing by. Right now there is no indoor seating, it's all takeout,which is fine. The shop is cute and aesthetically pleasing, and they have cute pictures of their special drinks on the table. I really liked that about this shop, as they had a good variety and seeing the pictures were helpful. As shown in a picture I took, they also have combo deals. We decided to opt for two of their $12 chicken wing deals that comes with a drink. I've been on a mission to try mango green tea with salted cream at every shop possible to determine the best one in the east bay. So I opted for: Salt and pepper chicken wings w/ mango green tea salted cream drink with egg pudding. My friend chose: Buffalo wings w/ mango pomelo sago with boba. She rung us up and charged us $37.40 for the order which looked wrong, and what confused me was that the girl at the register didn't even noticed that $37 is way too much for two orders of a $12 chicken wing combo. We brought it up, and she looked really confused, then told us she had to call her manager. Apparently mango pomelo sago isn't part of the deal? Her manager doesn't pick up. They get a call for an order, so she picks up the phone and take their order. We stand there and wait. The mango pomelo sago drink is literally made and sitting on the counter waiting for us. We're not sure what to do, but lady behind the counter finally gets back to us and says she'll just charge us for the two combos, but just make sure we don't order the mango pomelo next time. She was apologetic so we were like, "it's okay!". BUT, maybe someone should put a sign saying it's not part of the deal? Or like specify which drinks are included the combo... Anyways, we get our drinks and food. We're pretty excited since we just finished working out and we're hungry! Guess what? The Mango pomelo sago actually includes NO sago! Mind blown, we asked the lady who took our order and she said, "it doesn't actually include sago". Why is it called "mango pomelo sago"? My mango green tea salted cream is a slushy?! Uhhh? I've never ordered a mango green tea salted cream drink before that was a slushy. It's fine, but I wish it said on the board that it's a slushy. Nowhere does it inform you that you're getting a slushy. Also, it tasted like a straight up mango slushy, where's my green tea?! The wings were fine, you know, average wings with a bit of seasoning. Salt and pepper could be stronger. Wouldn't order again. I think we're both still really confused about the drinks.... Lol, maybe it was just surreal Half of what we ordered wasn't what it was labeled to be? Also, if you don't know, the mango green tea salted cream is $6.75. Which is mind blowing. Hayyyyy Tea... sadly it's sort of a 'nayyyy' tea visit for me. Hay Tea adds to the already competitive boba scene in San Leandro and they have a lot of good things going for them. They have a great venue inside (when we are able to properly dine indoors again) and their menu options were quite varied. There were so many drinks that I wanted to try that had ube, purple rice, red beans, etc. and were far more varied than most boba shops. Unfortunately, because they only offered whole milk as their creamer, it really restricted my selection to teas and fruit teas. I feel like it really should be the norm to offer a non-dairy milk as the base so that it encapsulates all customers that wish to enjoy a milk tea beverage. Since I couldn't have any of the milk based drinks, I went with their passionfruit and grapefruit green tea with boba ($6.25). They used real fruit in their fruit teas which I really appreciated and the boba was soft as well. It definitely was one of the better fruit teas that I've had from a boba shop. Service wise - it was okay too. We weren't greeted when we entered which was odd since we were the only customers at the time, and I wasn't sure if some of the staff understood my question about whether there were non-dairy options. Both the staff and I also forgot to talk about the sugar/ice level so my drink ended up being full sugar which made it too sweet. I didn't want to make it a big deal so I survived with a bit of a higher sugar kick from my visit. I hope that they consider using non-dairy creamers or incorporating the option of plant based milk for people with specific dietary needs. After going on a hike with friends at Lake Chabot, we stopped by here to get some refreshing drinks. I ordered a strawberry green tea salted cheese, which costs $5.25, with 50% sugar level. I did ask if it was possible to make without ice, but they said that's not an option because it's a blended drink. There wasn't really a line when we arrived, so drinks were prepared in a couple minutes. The drinks come in branded cups, and my particular drink has one of the cups with a rigid lid and a heart-shaped plug for the mouthpiece. It was still nice and sweet from top to bottom even with 50% sweetness level, and with a pretty marbled texture. I would recommend using a straw rather than drinking directly from the mouthpiece since if you do the latter, you'll end up first just drinking all the salted cheese and then the actual tea afterward. This is a decent spot to check out, especially if you like having a fairly large menu to choose from. read more

There is half frosted window at the bottom and the other half is just a regular window. 2 doors but just go to the door that is in front of the cashier or the kiosk. The one at the back is locked. Interior: I remembered they had tables up against the windows the last time I came over. I thought it was really cool, however they changed that and removed it. So it is less cool. The area is pretty spacious to bring a group of people over to talk, meetings, and family friendly space. As for the working station, you can be able to watch the baristas make your drinks and I think it's cool. My experience: DRINKS I tried some of their Matcha drinks and it's not that great at all. If I would recommend a drink, go for whatever they just freshly cut up like the (D5) Watermelon & Orange Green Tea, (H2) Strawberry Lover Slush are the most refreshing beverage during the summer. (D9) Mango Pomelo Sago is really good as a dessert beverage and you could never go wrong with it since it is a staple Asian dessert. (A1) Pink Lady is also a really good, refreshing, cold for the hot weather and the perfect sweetness for those who do not have a sweet tooth. FOOD I would honestly get their salt and pepper tofu, popcorn chicken, takoyaki, waffle fries, curly fries and regular fries. Those options are the safest options to go for here. My thoughts: Unfortunately, I did spot a roach in the bathroom, which is bad and hopefully the owner addresses it soon. This place could have been better, it is a little shabby since CURRENTLY, as I am writing this right now, they are manager-less and the owner are doing their own thing/system. I assume after a while, they will eventually find someone. Like any other Asian Cafe, once they get consistent local customers and regulars. The business will still be running without doing further improvements in the future based on how the interior looks. I'm glad mango pomelo sago is becoming more popular at boba spots now! It's one of my all-time faves from Hui Lau Shan (specifically the Hong Kong locations), so I like that I can track down iterations of it elsewhere. At $5.25 for a small (one size for this drink), I'd say I was satisfied. Hard to complain about prices these days when boba everywhere is getting more expensive. You can adjust sweetness for this one, but not ice since it's blended into the drink. Interestingly, I'm not sure if they use a different type of sago or maybe there was a mix up, but I didn't get any of the typical small sago balls usually seen in this drink/sago desserts. Instead, it was more like small jelly chunks. Popcorn chicken ($5.95) was good. There's a self-serve station to customize levels and types of spice. Admittedly, watching everyone touch the same condiments is not my favorite thing during COVID. Additionally, since you're adding your own spice, it's hard to get the chicken at the bottom coated. I wish they'd pre-portion some chili powder to go. Fruit teas could use some work. Huge chunks of lime and lemon in the tea we ordered, so the tartness overpowered everything and left the drink on the smaller side. It looked like they had some cheap but robust milk tea options, which is originally what I came to try. But when I saw their mango pomelo sago special, I changed my mind. This boba tea location used to be a Quickly, but changed over a year ago (opening a few weeks before lockdown). I finally made my way to check it out on a Saturday afternoon. The decor is much cleaner and classier than the previous incarnation (Quickly's furnishings are very stark and busy), with the drink preparation area in full view of the customers (separated by clear glass). It was a nice, clear day out, though I was surprised how busy the place was. There were 3 large orders put in before mine, so my 2 drinks took 20 minutes to make. But I didn't mind, since the staff were working very hard to get all the drinks made (2 of the large orders had at least 10 drinks each). To me, that's a good sign, since there are several competitors in San Leandro. My wife ordered (D1) Fruit Fusion Tea) while I got (B2) Matcha Milk Tea with Fresh Taro, Red Bean & Purple Rice (say that 5 times fast!). The Fruit Fusion Tea was very flavorful, and not as sweet as my wife thought, even though the sugar level was 100%. My drink had a lot of different textures with all the different toppings, which I enjoyed. I did see my drink being made, and this place uses a liquid non-dairy creamer (not the powder, which can leave a weird aftertaste if not mixed thoroughly). One note: all the fresh fruit teas are already the large size (presumably since they do put pieces of fresh fruit in the drink), but all the other drinks can be upsized. Despite the long wait time, we really enjoyed our drinks. I'm really curious about their "Secret Drink Contest," which I might try the next time. read more
