Always a win. Assuming the proximity to the Trump White House doesn't suck your soul out, this is an excellent option for dining or tea. As with all the Teaism locations, the food is healthy and delicious. HOW DO THEY DO THAT? It seems to defy the laws of physics, or at least dining; normally you can have doughnuts OR kale, chicken parm OR squash, flavor OR health -- but both? Science needs to get on this, because they have pulled off something amazing here. Many ingredients are organic (including the chicken); I think nearly all are local, and 100% for sure are tasty. I especially recommend the Bento boxes for lunch. The tea is also fantastic. Tons of flavors, you really can't go wrong. High quality stuff. Lastly, if you need a charming gift item, they also have a small selection of teaware (kettles, cups etc), and you can buy loose-leaf tea to go, chocolates and their truly remarkable (and not overly sweet) cookies. I really like the concept of Teaism- a quaint little tea shop and cafe that isn't too pricey or formal. You order and pick up your food at the counter- making it convenient for a quick lunch. The menu looks promising and healthy, with fresh salads, curries, and sushi rolls. I like the Middle Eastern, Japanese, Indian, and Korean influence on the menu and extensive selection of side dishes. However, I was pretty unimpressed by the few menu items I tried. The ochazuke soup with salmon was slightly bland and lackluster. I get that it's supposed to be a relatively mild soup with green tea as a broth, but it needed a spicy kick to enhance the earthiness of the seaweed and fishiness of the poached salmon. I got the bento box with fried chicken, potato mix, pickled veggies, and seaweed salad (instead of brown rice). The fried chicken was the size of Chick-Fila nuggets.. It was coated in a panko crust but was so dry I had to keep drowning it in the onion mayo sauce for some flavor. I was really unimpressed with how dry and boring it tasted. The potato mix consisted of sweet potatoes and new potatoes that had been cooked a while ago and refrigerated- resulting in a dry starchy taste. The seaweed salad was standard- something you would packaged from an Asian grocery store or sushi restaurant. The picked cucumbers and onions were crunchy and salty- the only thing I really enjoyed. It was some time in the afternoon after work and I was looking for some boba tea when I Yelped and found this quaint little tea place near my office. It has been a nice seating area outside and inside. I arrived around 5:15 and since they close at 5:30 I didn't really get the chance to explore the menu. Again, I was looking for some boba tea but I turned up selecting the Chai shake. They also have a variety of cookies and pastries and I went with the chocolate chunky salty oatmeal cookie which was huge. I sat down and enjoyed my cookie while I sipped on my Chai shake. Both of the cookie and the shake were delicious. The service was quick and the price was right. I paid about $6.25 for my early evening snack. A lot of the items that were for sale looked delicious and I would love to go back and try them. I think of myself as a nice little Teaism devotee but I was unaware that this location existed. It is called Teaism Lafayette Park for a reason. It has some prime real estate. At this point, my visits to Teaism are for the Zhengzhou Pearls, their Milk Tea with Boba. I have no problems with the food and their Boba is not the best I've had but I enjoy it. I love it as a nice transition betwixt tasks on a busy day, or as a snack. This last visit followed a trip to the Renwick. My first time. Hence, I didn't know there was a Teaism this close. Perfect to grab your stuff to go and make a go of Lafayette Park. Since it was shortly before closing, and I didn't find that out until I was ordering, my hopes weren't up for Zhengzhou pearls. But per usual, Teaism came through! In and out antes de closure. This experience was A+ but I can't give it 5 Stars. Teaism Penn Quarter has a beautiful layout. It looks and feels nice but the Dupont Circle location is in a beautiful space and Penn Quarter has the two floors and the koy pond. I love their focus on beautiful teas, small bites and deeeelicious salted oatmeal cookes. Get the chocolate salted oatmeal cookie! From my recent visit a few weeks ago, I had the Oolong tea and seaweed salad. The order tallied up to ~$8, pretty expensive for all that I had received. The tea was, as expected, smokey dark and good! Free hot water refills. The salad itself was bright green, almost unnaturally so. It tasted meh OK. Not bad, but didnt feel fresh either. The tempeh sandwich was 2 slabs of cold tempeh with mayonnaise and gochujang (Korean chili paste) on cold (previously toasted) whole-grain focaccia bread. It also came with a few jalapeños, which doesn't really go well with the sandwich. And on the side was a cold Asian slaw (napa cabbage and grated carrots ) which lacked acidity and salt... I guess you can say it was healthy. I honestly did not want to finish my meal...it lacked in quite a few areas, and was not really worth $11 plus tax. My first impression was of great disappointment because the sandwich was wrapped up like it was pre-made earlier in the day. I expected a freshly toasted sandwich. However, I definitely devoured it. This vegetarian sandwich was simply delicious! I've never seen lettuce so green! Everything was so fresh and worked perfectly together. "Salted Oat Cookie"- $2.10 So this is what we came for, literally. It was mentioned on DishTip as one of the must try things in Washington DC. Apparently, this is the "fast food" version of Teaism. If that is so, then this is the best fast food that I have ever had. I had the seared tuna bento box. The only thing that was lacking the wasabi sauce, it was too watered down, I was expecting something stronger or creamier. Of course I visited when they were preparing to deal with the crush of people for the Inauguration....so that could be part of it. But it seems like this location is much less about enjoying the actual food and more about being a fast departure from all the other bland places around here. I had my usual salmon ochazuke. It was great, as to be expected, but since they're all about speed here, they didn't give me a fresh pot of just brewed tea, instead, I got a pot of tea that had been sitting in the warmer. The effect: my soup was lukewarm within a few minutes. I also feel like the flavor was affected a little - but the temperature was my biggest issue. All in all, it fed my ochazuke craving. Grandfather the chef has taught me how to make it, so maybe one day I'll stop being lazy and make my own. read more

My recommendations: Breakfast (or anytime): Ginger Scone - sometimes it's fresh and still warm. Chunky sugar on top, chunky candied ginger in the middle, apricot jelly and I. am. in. heaven. I don't actually think it's too sweet considering the sugar crust and candied ginger. Lunch: Ochazuke or any bentos. The ochazuke is basically rice, salmon, furikake (seaweed/sesame flavoring mix), with some nice hot green tea poured on top. It's the ultimate Japanese comfort food. You can pour your own tea so you can make it as soupy or dry as you like. The salmon tends to be dry but it's still a good dish. The bentos are a great deal too and usually come with edamame and sweet potatoes. The only thing is - the ochazuke is the only "hot" menu item at this location. So during one of DC's many cold cold days, there's not too many options to warm up. Well other than tea, of course. My favorites here are the Morrocan Mint and the Chai, but they have so many teas it's hard to choose. Snack - salty oat cookies! Big, thick oatmeal raisin cookies with just a hint of salt. I always bring a bag when I visit home and my family can't get enough. read more

Teaism sells perhaps the city's most refreshing summer beverage: the ginger limeade. Its spicy and sour and sweet all at once and is immensely satisfying to drink while walking back to your office through Farragut Park. Teaism also happens to have pretty great lunches (the bento boxes make for a perfect portion of meat/fish, vegetables, and rice) and awesome desserts (yum, salty oaty cookies). The salmon ochazuke is as Diana K. described it, brown rice topped with seaweed, chunks of salmon, and other seasoning nicely presented in an asymmetrical bowl but as Gracie B. pointed out, your green tea in the pot is lukewarm which doesn't make it a completely satisfying lunch experience. If you want to avoid busy workbee that stop by Teaism during the weekday, avoid the lunch rush because it is not a peaceful experience. I got the Cilantro Eggs, Chicken Sausage and flat bread toasted. 3 hours later I was "DOG" sick for the remainder of out day. My mother had the exact same thing but no chicken sausage but instead a waffle. She was fine! So it had to be the chicken sausage that made ill. We were trying to enjoy our visit but I couldn't. I visited this Teaism location almost 2 years ago and gave it just 2 stars. I had had a bad experience and did not enjoy the food during that visit. However, nearly two years later, I visited again and have to say that I was quite satisfied with my meal. Perhaps it was the difference between taking my food to go (as I did last time) and eating at the restaurant itself (as I did recently). The portions are much larger when you dine in, as I had suspected the last time I visited this Teaism location 2 years ago. I ordered the salmon bento box again and loved the combination of the chilled salmon, pickled cucumbers, broccoli, seaweed, and brown rice. I still think $10.95 is still a bit pricey, but it's a healthy, tasty, and filling enough meal. And this time, there were actually places to sit for lunch around noon! I really enjoyed that the soba noodles that came with lots of vegetables and decent amount of broth which filled me up! They had a really varied menu including palak paneer (Indian food which looked good), oatmeal, and a variety of Japanese dishes all of which sounded good. I think a lot of people forget that you can get bubble tea (called "Zhenzhou Pearls" on the menu, it's pretty much exactly the original milk tea bubble tea) here...at Lafayette Park across the street from the White House and within walking distance of Farragut West/McPherson Square, this is great for a lunch break if you work downtown. Service is fast and friendly and I like that they have the LevelUp app. (Only thing is that they don't have rewards with the LevelUp app like many other places, but eh...) The inside is a little bit crowded with square tables that are kind of small and it can be kind of loud at lunchtime, but that's ok if you know that going in. There are also a lot of patio tables outside if it's a nice day. It's definitely a casual lunchtime cafeteria feel (instead of a classy dinner restaurant feel), although the inside decor is very well done. Try the Salty Oat Cookies too. This is another omni/vegan friendly restaurant right near the White House. I appreciate that it has a mission statement dedicated to serving whole/local foods. It is a bit pricy but there is ample seating indoors and outdoors. The vegan items aren't labeled, but the staff is nice and will help you out if you have questions. From what I saw, there were not vegan pastries. I had the vegan bento box which came with a black bean cake and some pickled veggies/brown rice. It was light and perfect for the heat. The limeade was also nice, not too sweet with a subtle tartness. My mom had the chai shake and also enjoyed it. I can't seem to turn my food safety brain off, even on vacation, so I took away one star because one of the servers was just touching everything with their bare hands (straws, garnishes). Unlike the Dupont and Penn Quarter ones, this Teaism is much more subdued and not nearly as crazily packed in with people. Of course it also lacks the cool decor of a rickety, water logged Chinese tea house - that's what the decor at the other two reminds me of. This Teaism is much more like a regular restaurant with booths that look reminiscent to the ones at Cheesecake Factory and simple little tables. Unlike too many places in DC, Teaism's outdoor patio and windows have a fairly good view of something other than traffic or a parking lot which is definitely a plus. The service here is pretty good too, for the most part they leave you to yourself but they get your drinks to you quick. I ordered the thai chicken curry based on my friend's recommendation, but I was utterly disappointed. While the curry was mildy spicy and very flavorful, there was barely any chicken to eat it with. I need my protein! The portioning was completely off. At the end of my meal, I was left with vegetables, a pool of curry, and half a bowl of leftover rice. For $11, I expect more than 7 bite sized pieces of chicken. My meal was ready within minutes of ordering, but take note, everything here is pre made and just requires plating/boxing. Certainly not worth $11 in my opinion, but maybe if you are pressed for time. I haven't tried anything else, but based on my first experience, I was not impressed and will not be returning. This may be a good lunch spot if you enjoy really small portions, you are making a lot of money, and it's nearby, but never would I go out of my way to come here. I was severely disappointed in Teaism. i've been looking forward to visiting Teaism for several weeks now, having found it un-expectedly closed on the July 3rd when my wife, daughter, and i found the door locked. We were able to get in for lunch on the 8th. The floors were clean the decor tasteful but the placement of the ordering line was awkward with a support pillar in the way. Getting a table was easy and we seated ourselves. The service was fast and efficient at the counter. I ordered a vegetarian Bento Box - and here is where the problems began. The Box included a grilled medley of vegetables, brown rice, edamame, and tofu. The grilled vegetables, topped with a tangy paste, obviously came out of a chill box - likely they were fresh the evening before. The furikake (rice seasoning) atop the brown rice added no flavor. The tofu was uncooked and served in a puddle of soy sauce and overwhelming ginger. On the plus side, the bubble tea tasted more authentic than most that I had before, and the salt cookie struck a perfect balance between sweet and salt. Four stars for tea and cookies. I love the other locations of Teaism, and I finally made it out to this location twice. As usual the teas are quite good, and the seating area is a bit small and often crowded during lunch. However, if you go any other time, the lines are short, it's quiet and there is plenty of elbow room in the seating area. The food at this location is good, but not anything worth writing home about. Stay with the teas and either the ginger scones or the cookies. BTW, would it really hurt to give out a bit more jam and butter with those scones? What they give just isn't enough to spread across the two that you get. In short, a perfectly nice place to have tea and a snack. As a lunch place, there are better choices. read more

Teaism's been on my list for a while, as I adore tea and Asian food in general, but for some reason I kept walking past this location without seeing it. It's quite out of the way. So after months of anticipation... I couldn't be more let down. First, the good. The interior is well-decorated, tastefully colorful without being gaudy. It felt more like a French cafe than a Japanese tea house, which is fine with me. I ordered salmon Ochazuke (a rice soup made with tea instead of broth) and Anxi oolong tea. It was pricey for my lunch standards, but I thought I could treat myself. The food arrived in fairly short order. The Ochazuke looked good and the salmon was fine, but as I continued to eat I noticed that the soup was /completely disgusting./ Someone had the bright idea of smothering the whole thing in wasabi, which is really just horseradish and green food coloring. As a result, the rice tasted like horseradish. The cabbage tasted like horseradish. The broth was horseradish city. I can't see someone who LIKES the taste of horseradish enjoying this soup, and I most certainly do not. There is no mention of this on the menu, by the way. The Anxi tea, meanwhile, was completely mediocre. I've had better oolong from starched tea bags. Here I am, having spent about twice as much as I normally do on my lunch, with a quarter of a bowl of soup and some tea that literally left a bad taste of my mouth to show for it. I can't speak for the quality of the rest of the menu, but it's embarrassing that such items would be offered at all- and it's downright shameful that it was being sold at those prices. I love Teaism. I'm so fortunate that this location is only a couple of blocks from my work place and I am able to eat here at least once a week. I always have Salmon Ochazuke. It is basically rice, salmon, seaweed and vegetables. You get a tea pot with green tea, which you use as brooth. You can pour your own tea so you can make it as soupy or dry as you like.
