We order our food and had to wait for at least 20+ minutes before we got our food. There were several sheriffs officers that arrived after we had ordered and the officers got their food before we did!! The server told us they didn't have rice for the chimichangas and that's what was taking so long. As soon our food came we packed it up in to-go boxes, paid our bill(s) and left. My friend ordered NO sour cream and his dish had sour cream on it. The margaritas we ordered tasted funny, like they were watered down. The "ambiance" was okay.... I couldn't find this place on Yelp and until I looked up the address and found it. They are operating as Zapata now and not Tecate. When I walk in I'm greeted and seated. The server brought out chips and beans. Not chips and salsa which was something I'm not accustomed to. But it was bad. The place is fairly large and the day I was there it was pretty empty. For my entree I went with the California burrito. It comes with chicken, steak, and shrimp, it was no brainer for me to go with this option. When my food came out, the burrito was massive! It comes topped with a sauce and cheese. Just by the sheer amount I was already happy with my choice. The chicken, steak, and shrimp were cooked perfectly! The only thing I would say is the seasoning wasn't as flavorful. Regardless, I was very happy with my choice and would recommend it. read more

The food could kill. It could genuinely kill you. They served me RAW boiled chicken in my quesadilla (which I did not order, I ordered pollo de plancha) which is grilled chicken. When I requested it to be switched the owner argued with me, and asked if I wanted it to go because they were STILL going to charge me that plate AND the replacement because I should've known the menu. Even though they made the mistake when they took my order. Not only did the owner put her hand in my face, and said "Let me speak" she proceeded to say how it was my fault. Our "Other" Mexican restaurant was closed so we headed up the street and found Tecate was open. It took a while for us to be seated and another while for our server to come but once we got our food it was quite good. I was disappointed that they were out of Tamals so I had to opt for a taco but it was fresh and good. The salsa bar is unique and really added to our enjoyment. Our waiter was friendly but not overly engaging. Our water was never refilled and I would have liked another glass. The restaurant was clean and had fun decorations, typical of the Mexican flare! My husband and I went here last night, about 8:45. We were the only customers. We were greeted and seated promptly. Our server took our drink order and gave us menus. She brought chips and bean dip to the table. It was very good. I'm dieting so I was looking for something that had veggies and nothing drowning in cheese sauce. I settled on the taco salad. A handful of shredded cheese was ok. My husband got the Tacos El Hombre. Our food arrived quickly. The salad was sitting in a puddle of cheese sauce and there was a lot of it inside the shell. *Sigh* I was really disappointed. The menu said cheese. The chicken was rather mushy and bland. I ate part of it because I was really hungry but I left more than half on the plate. I didn't ask for a box. My husband enjoyed his meal very much. He got the corn tortillas he asked for. He said it was exactly what he wanted. He ate every bite. We may go back but I'll still look for a restaurant in the area that can make a good taco salad. read more

Tried Tecate for the first time for lunch. When we walked in the first thing we noticed was the smell of disinfectant. Then we noticed that we were the only women having lunch, it was packed with men including several police officers. All Mexican restaurants that I have been to in Hendersonville have salsa bars, theirs had fewer choices than most, but the chips were good. I ordered a quesadilla that had chicken and bacon in it. My pet peeve for quesadillas is when they don't hold together and you have to eat it with a fork and knife or like a soft taco. This was the case at Tecate, a floppy quesadilla. The flavors were good though. My friend pointed out the ceiling in the corner we were sitting in. It appeared to have water damage or mold stains. It also had a huge cobweb! See picture. If I could take one restaurant home to Indiana with me from my trip to North Carolina it would be Tecate. Reason #1. SALSA BAR. Yes, you heard that correctly, a salsa bar. A whole line of options to try solo and remix into delicious salsa-y combinations. Some with enough spice to knock you out of your chair and others that are the epitome of pleasantly mild. Reason #2. This place doesn't know portion control. The California burrito was larger than the 6 month old we had with us. Three members of our 13 person party ordered one and 2 out of the three had crazy large left overs. Reason #3. They deftly handled our party of 13. 13 adults with one baby all with different and specific requests and not a single ball was dropped. Drinks and food came out fast and hot. I'm in Asheville for work. It's hard to find good Mexican food in this area. Well, I have found it in Hendersonville. I have been here twice for lunch and if I was closer, I would go there a lot more. They have a salsa bar! I love the red salsa with their homemade chips. The chips are crispy and fresh. I could live on this stuff. On my first visit, I ordered the taco plate. 2 tacos with rice and beans. The pork was seasoned well in a corn tortilla. I haven't had tacos like this since I was in Mexico. YUMMY!!! The refried beans and rice were perfect. Second visit, I had the asada plate. A generous portion of beef with rice and beans. Everything was very tasty. I also sampled the chicken soup. White meat chicken breasts with cilantro, onions, and lots of avocado in a clear, delicate broth. A bowl of soup is enough for 2 meals. I judge a restaurant on how often I have to add salt to my plate. On both occasions, I never added any salt. Everything was seasoned well. This is a family owned restaurant with most of the family working there. I found them to be very nice. I speak some Spanish which is the family's primary language. Some of the reviews say the staff wasn't very friendly. I think the staff is great but they can't communicate well in English. Try speaking in Spanish when you go there. A little "Hola!" goes a long way. If you want some excellent, authentic Mexican food that doesn't cost a fortune go here!!! read more

So, we move up here and discover that this area is like Mexican food Mecca. Restaurants everywhere. Which makes Tecate's food unforgivable. In my experience, there are two kinds of mex food: authentic and Sysco. This is a Sysco joint. You know, those big trucks, every kind of pre-made food imaginable. Like the Applebee's of Mexican. Tecate "El Primo" did not satisfy. My tacos had the nastiest, fattiest cuts of beef. My wife's chimi was filled with shredded...something swimming in syrupy cheese-ish sauce. If this were back in BR, if probably give it a 3-star, but sadly competition makes this a solid 1. I feel like microwaves are a big part of their kitchen. Tonight after waiting a long period of time and noticing other customers also had received no service at all, I went to the front to ask for service. No one came still. After waiting longer the owners wife came and informed us that if we were at a restaurant in Asheville we would have to wait even longer for service, no apology, still no service, we left feeling quite shocked that an owner of a restaurant would treat customers that way. What an amazing place!!! The chips were warm and delicious. The salsa bar had a fantastic variety, each one made of fresh ingredients with unique flavors. All of the dishes we had were cooked to perfection- including shrimp, chicken and steak. Food was good but service was slow and not friendly. We were treated like we an inconvenience. We were a party of 7 and when we received the bill we noticed that a couple of the meals were charged incorrectly. When we went to pay and explain the discrepancy, the person at the register pulled out another copy of our bill (same customer number and everything), that was was exactly correct. Seems very likely that their register till comes up over each day and they get to take home a good chunk of change, free and clear. Throw away the copy you provided to the customer, keep the "extra" one behind the counter for your records and there you go... Slimy way to make a buck... Will NOT be going back. read more

Pastor tacos were the best, very moist. The corn tortillas were also rocking. I enjoyed the taco salad which was very fresh and good. The bean dip was the best I've ever had.
