We have been using TechPro Builders for a few years now for our HVAC needs. Our Technician, Park, was very thorough in troubleshooting our furnace. He replaced necessary parts and reattached the (flow pipe) so that the heat traveled easily without having to move around angled pipe turns. I'm VERY pleased with his service. We decided to convert from a gas furnace to a heat pump to lower our carbon footprint and also because we have sufficient photovoltaic supply. We sought 3 bids, and chose to work with TechPro because of their fair pricing (not the lowest) and their apparent leanings towards being service oriented. The installation went smoothly, on schedule as promised. In replacing an existing furnace system, they discovered some field adjustments that needed to be made, and did not charge extra. All the workers were cordial, friendly, attentive, courteous and knowledgeable. They kept the job site clean and in order. We've been running the system for about 3 months now and its great. We did have a blown fuse last week and they came out and did a warranty repair within two days. Communication is great with attentive and quick emails and text responses from and to the office. Our AC indoor unit started leaking after the first heat of the season. I reached out to TechPro based on the favorable yelp reviews. They did not disappoint. The tech (Park) was very professional, knowledgeable & thorough. We have indoor cats and he was very vigilant about making sure they didn't get out when he made trips for parts in his truck. He diagnosed the issue (leaking condensation pump) and fixed it and we've had no issues since. In his way out, he took the initiative to inspect our outdoor AC unit and alerted us that we should not be storing anything on top of it that prevents fan from cooling properly. If I could give 2.5 stars, I would. TechPros's admin still has not scheduled the final walkthrough, more than 2 weeks after the city inspection signoff, and she is threatening not to submit my application for a rebate by the deadline if they don't receive a final payment (I actually wanted everything in the system to work before I paid it, imagine that). I can not recommend this company. If you use them, be sure to modify the contract so that if the job is not completed, you are not on the hook to pay them. If possible, modify the contract to hold back your final payment until after they submit any rebate forms. read more

I. Techpro Builders court records Before getting into details, please consider checking their court records in "San Mateo County Court". This can be done by selecting "Online Services" in San Mateo County Court's website, and then selecting "Search Case Records" on the left side. There are two search systems, the MIDX and the Odyssey. The former can be used to search for case numbers by a name of a business like "Techpro Builders" or a person. Once the case number is retrieved (like 18SCS01408), the "Odyssey Portals" can be used to find out the details of the case. This can be done by choosing "Odyssey Portals" from the court's website, then "Odyssey Public Portals", and then "Smart Search". I am not suggesting that being sued should be a deal breaker to you, but I personally take these records more seriously than online reviews. I wish I'd read the records before hiring them for the project. II. Contractor State License Board (CSLB) investigation I filed a complaint against Techpro Builders to the CSLB of California, and CSLB determined that Techpro Builders were responsible for one or more possible violations of the California Business and Professions Code. I have attached a copy of the letter from CSLB. III. My project experience This section is a bit lengthy, however, if you are going to hire them for a large project, it might be worth your time to read it through. I hired them in November 2019 to replace my old furnace, duct, insulation, as well as to install a new air conditioner. The following are some of the issues of the project remaining unresolved after 2 years. 1. The insulations They failed to install almost all the insulations correctly. I have attached pictures showing examples of all these cases, as described below: a. Many parts of the ducts are not fully covered by insulation. b. There are too many patches on the insulation (a properly installed insulation should be wrapped). c. Insulations started to fall off not long after the installation because they were patched instead of wrapped onto the ducts. d. Insulations were overcompressed in many places. e. Insulation installation is obviously messy in many places. To be fair, after I communicated to them multiple times and mentioned that I would file a complaint to CSLB, they did agree to fix or even redo the insulation, but they've never actually done it (please see the section below about their response time for more information). 2. The safety switch in furnace is taped to stay pressed The whole system shut off more than a year ago, and Techpro Builders discovered that the safety switch inside the furnace door won't stay pressed even if the door is closed. The safety switch is used to automatically shut off the system if it is not pressed in, i.e. if the furnace door is loosened or removed. Techpro Builders taped it so the switch stays pressed even if the door is removed. They haven't come back to remove the tape, despite that I asked them to resolve this multiple times over the last year. It remains a safety concern for the system. I have attached a picture of the switch. 3. The response time During my communication with Techpro Builders, they would suddenly become unresponsive for a few days or even as long as a few weeks for quite a few times. For example, Kali from Techpro Builders contacted me to set up a phone call with their owner, Garen, to resolve the remaining issues in June 2021. I didn't receive a call at the appointment time so I emailed Kali, then he told me that he had the wrong number (he could have emailed me). Then when we connected via the call, Kali told me that Garen wasn't available. He discussed details with me and told me that he would leave the final decision to Garen, and asked me to email the details of our discussions. After I emailed the details to Kali, they hadn't replied for more than a month until I emailed them again. Similar behavior occurred amongst Techpro Builders staff such as Armen. The communication seems to follow a pattern as follows: a. Someone in Techpro Builders contacts me and mentions how much they would like to resolve the issues. b. Then I spend lots of effort and time preparing a detailed description of issues. c. Then I wait for weeks without any response from Techpro Builders. 4. The temperature difference between rooms The airflow between the rooms is not well balanced. As shown in the picture, there are 6 degrees (F) of difference between two adjacent rooms. 5. The downsizing of air conditioner after signing the quote After I signed the quote and paid the deposit, Techpro Builders recommended downsizing both the A/C and the furnace. I ended up agreeing to downsizing the A/C, but not the furnace. They haven't adjusted the quote down and pocketed the price difference of the A/C. Thank you for reading. TechPro installed our AC and furnace five years ago and they did a great job. Because of the material temperature difference between our floors, they designed a system that allowed each floor to operate independently. This year the AC suddenly stopped working. Park came to our home and was able to diagnose the issue quickly; a capacitor was broken. He replaced it and now the AC is working. Park was very professional and a nice guy, too. Had an issue with the furnace: it would shut off after running for 5 minutes. TechPro were able to send a technician in just few days. The technician Park did an amazing job. He inspected and tested everything. And even though the problem wasn't very easy to reproduce, he tuned my furnace to reduce the likelihood of it tripping again. Most importantly (and that's the main reason for the 5 star review): Park explained everything in the smallest detail, showed me the results of all tests, and explained how the switches turning off the furnace work. I'm somewhat handy, so now if the issue comes back, I will know where to look and will be able to do the basic diagnostic before calling a Pro. Park also explained how to properly fix the main root cause of the furnace issue: insufficient air return. He explained my options, and allowed me to make my own decision for which option is more economically viable (I have a heat pump in addition to the furnace, so investing too much into the furnace might not make sense). They removed a horrible old gas heating unit from our attic (that wasn't even designed for single-family homes and bigger than regulation) and replaced it with a brand new Carrier unit. I was getting a new roof last year so it seemed like a good time to upgrade to my furnace to a heat pump, putting the compressor on my flat roof. Techpro (mostly Park) helped me communicate specs to the roofer for the roof jack to pass the coolant through, and and electrician for the electrical connections, and get the heat pump installed. I was concerned about noise transferring through the roof, but they put it on special blocks, so I barely hear a thing. They even put on a compressor sound blanket to limit the noise outside. My only nit: I wish they'd talked me through different options for the heat pump model. I just got what they recommended, a base Carrier model, but now I know more, I probably would have preferred a smarter version with variable compressor speed. Anyway, it's great to have both heating and cooling available. I'm in SF so I didn't have cooling before, and it was great during the summer heat wave. read more

Armen and his crew of long-time employees are the epitome of professionalism. After securing several quotes, we hired TechPro in large part because of Armen's can-do attitude toward solving problems with HVAC piping, fitting, routing, and design, which stood in sharp contrast to other HVAC contractors that arrived on site and complained about or made derogatory comments about older systems and the challenges that it would present to them. After providing a timely quote, Armen was quite generous with his time in answering questions about his design and in spelling out the eligible rebates very precisely. So we signed and hired TechPro. After they arrived on site, they were even better than our initial impression, which is saying quite a lot. Their employees are very courteous, respectful, and careful with on site instructions and the property owner's time and availability. All new problems that arose (and they will arise in any large project) were addressed very quickly and thoroughly by Armen, who was always ready to provide cost-conscious and effective options. I would highly recommend Techpro Builders and Park, the technician. My very old furnace wouldn't start, so I called three places that were highly rated. Techpro Builders was the only one that actually responded within 12 hours, as you would expect from normal businesses. Because of my particular situation, they were able to prioritize and send a technician to my house the next morning, so I was relieved and pleased. Park was extremely professional, courteous, respectful, and highly knowledgeable. He wore protective booties before entering my home, and he laid down a protective blanket on the floor before he started working. He was able to troubleshoot thoroughly and determine the problem quickly. He also explained what he was doing so that I understood what's going on and what the problem was. Beware...TPB HVAC services did not honor our arrangement. Considering the positive reviews on Yelp, thought they would be a good contractor for this $25k+ Carrier project. However when they informed me that the project was permitted and finished, asked owner Arman if they completed the required HERS certification as contracted and he said yes. Hired an independent HERS tester and they confirmed the system failed on this test. Notified management/owner of the fail in written email, phone and text and requested resolution, no response.... Guess in the end, we all expect our HVAC contractors to provide timely service in a honorable and professional manner. Wondering how many of their customers have systems that don't comply with state requirements and passing HERS certification. Guess only they know this. Techpro Builders installed furnace with AC in my apartment. It was a relatively simple unit swap project with AC lines and wiring already in place. To my standard, they did a poor job - I was left unsatisfied and I'm very unlikely to have business with them in future. Whole experience was a complete clown show. First, they were late on almost any appointment - like 2-3h late, one time they didn't show up at all. No call, no "excuse us, running late" notification - just show up whatever time is convenient for them. Second, when Armen or Garen say "**I** will do that" or "**I** will come" what it means is that they will find some low-payed contractor in the area who will come to try to do whatever was promised, however in most cases they will have no idea what/how/why they need to do. Then Armen or Garen will come and will tell you again how nice and beautiful they will do/fix it and then again some poor guy arrives who sees your setup for the first time and has no idea what he needs to do here. Third, overall low work quality and poor choice of components and equipment. Everything is dirt cheap. They don't present you with options to keep price tag low. Things like evaporator, filter rack, anti-vibration mounting, etc. are important and you will get whatever was cheapest at the moment without being presented with options. If you choose furnace with them, I would recommend seek consultation elsewhere, since from their perspective only difference between units are BTU and how many speeds motor has. Jesse - guy who does brazing and AC lines. Most of the time he was bragging how much experience he have and how he is much more experienced than Garen (owner) and how it doesn't make sense that Armen runs the show. Yes, he has a lot of experience, but he managed to develop little skill with it. AC line filter was put too close to furnace single-wall flue pipe, 40 years old line wasn't flushed before AC install (only examined for leaks), after brazing whole apartment was covered in ashes. He also used screw driver to open roof door and damaged paint on our property. Smoked cigarets on the roof (we are in non-smoking complex, smoking is prohibited) and discarded cigaret butts just on the roof floor, where he was working. Stay away from this guy. Below when I say "they" I mean some poor guy that Techpro Builders called to do the job. Now specific details. 1. Low quality filter rack was assembled incorrectly (screws with huge heads we placed inside) which makes it impossible to put filter in or out without damaging it. Certain parts of filter rack were lost in the process, which prevent filter of supported size to be placed correctly. When they presented "job done" and I opened a filter door, filter fall through the rack and was lying on the floor. 2. Furnace was damaged during transportation or installation and it's door doesn't close completely and stays wobbly 3. Evaporator and furnace assembly was assembled via just driving self-drilling screws into the metal at arbitrary angles at arbitrary points. Metal was bent, paint scratched, doesn't look pretty. As result, maintenance is complicated due to sloppy screw-driving. 4. After several month air seal in several places leaks air 5. They installed electric water pump to take water away. Usual gravity drain was available, they just didn't find it and didn't ask. They wanted to put a pipe from furnace room to bathroom, even though usual drain was right there in furnace room and water heater was already using it. They didn't tell that they will install electric water pump either, so that was a surprise. Such things must be discussed upfront, since any electric pump is a noise source and adds complexes to the setup. 6. They tried to install 2.5 ton condenser unit, instead of 2 ton as in contract. They were not able to do it, because unit didn't fit into roof door. 7. Attempted to install heavy condenser unit on thin and long anti-vibration springs. Without providing and fixation. Unit was wobbly like jack in the box. Looking them in the eyes you could see "Something is wrong, but I don't know what to do... I was given this springs... I used them... help me..." 8. Didn't remove wire isolation before connecting it to the breaker, were surprised that unit doesn't start up. 9. They didn't read installation manuals on any installed equipment. They connected furnace to thermostat incorrectly and didn't put jumpers on furnace PCB into correct position that corresponds to my setup. 10. Didn't remove large paper sticker from single-wall flue pipe. It's all charred now. UPDATE. Final payment was contingent on fixing remaining issues. I thought you either intend to come and fix those or just addmitted that it wasn't your best project and it's not worth full payment. However, you deciding to collect it by just sending an invoice indicates that you gave up on completing this project normally. This finalizes our transaction, invoice paid, review out. read more
