Please, can I give six stars? Last week an elderly friend of mine was in a terrible muddle. The high temperatures a few days earlier had finally convinced him he needed some air conditioning for himself and his caregiver. A handyman/general contractor had given him an estimate to put in a mini-split AC and was eager to get started. At the same time, there was a half-completed upgrade of wiring and panel waiting for PG&E to do some work. This was by another firm that had installed a new water heater last December. Listening to all this, I was very worried that my friend would sign a low-ball contract, only to discover he was unhappy with the one-room mini-split solution, or that he needed to pay more for additional electrical work, and/or that the addition of AC to the existing system would overload his fuse box. John spent solid hour kindly untangling my friend's needs, explaining what different solutions might be (whole house, 1/2/3-zone mini-split, etc.), and helping us understand how to go forward. (Confusing the issue was the fact that the water heater company is actually a major air-conditioning installer, unbeknownst to me or my friend, so poor John was also trying to figure out why they weren't sorting this out.) It was such a blessing to talk with someone focused on my friend's situation and problem -- and not just trying to sell services or products. John was such a pleasure work with - he will be the only hvac person I ever call! My furnace stopped working and he came out the same day to check it out. It turned out to be a somewhat unusual problem - the circuit board had an issue and had to be replaced. Despite it being an unusual problem, John had one in his truck and replaced it. The whole thing took under an hour of labor, which made the cost very reasonable. I watched him work and debug the problem - I was super impressed with his speed and knowledge. Could not have had a better experience with John. From the get go he was responsive on the phone and communicative by email. First I asked him to check our existing hvac setup as my previous hvac contractor retired. John was super honest and told me nothing was needed but did offer some recommendations for improvement. After that I asked to alter our hvac and add a duct to our garage. I was concerned about the exact design and how it would fit in the attic as I use it for storage, but we were able to work out everything by phone and photos. We called John Bodnar after the furnace he had installed in our home more than a decade ago began to function intermittently and then barely at all. As fate would have it, this occurred on the coldest night in the year to date. He quickly observed a rattle in the furnace mechanism. He disassembled the furnace and then reassembled it. In the process, a heating pipe fell apart in his hands. He discovered a hive of dead bees inside the pipe, preventing its normal function. He cleared the pipe of the debris and reassembled it. He then climbed onto the roof to make sure that no further damage had been done. He explained that the collection of dead insects had been caused by inactivity of the furnace over time. Throughout this time, he showed his experience and expertise in this complex repair. We are very pleased by how quickly he identified the problem and the exceptional skill he showed in solving it, leaving us with a fully functioning furnace. read more

My air conditioner failed in the heat wave. Another company told me I needed a new compressor - $2000 or they could install a new system - $6500. I decided to get a second opinion. Bodner came out and quickly discovered that the problem was a chewed wire - wretched rats! The problem was quickly repaired and the air conditioner works great. Cannot recommend John Bodnar. He responded to a service call for an inoperable attic furnace (faulty gas valve). He looked at the furnace & access and refused to do the job citing limited access, despite saying that he had the part. He left us with no heat. I am a 6 foot, 81 yrs old. Frustrated I bought the part on Amazon and installed it in about 30 minutes- not a problem with access. We expected more from John Bodnar HVAC. Find someone else for your repairs. read more

Couldn't be happier than I am with Bodnar Heating & AC. I recently mostly-installed a ductless mini-split system that I ordered online. I say "mostly" because like most homeowners, I don't keep around a tank of nitrogen nor a vacuum pump that I can use to pressure test the piping and to suction all of the air out of the system before releasing the refrigerant charge into the lines. For this, I needed an honest and reliable air conditioning contractor. Most of the names I got from the company that sold me the system didn't even call me back. They were either too busy, too disinterested in this type of work, or just too rude. I got referred to Bodnar by a neighbor and got a quick call back, a quote of $140/hr with a guess that it would take 2.5-3 hours to complete (since I'd already done nearly all of the work), and a time scheduled within the next week. The day of our appointment came, and John was unfortunately detained because of a problem at a previous client he was visiting just to give an estimate: on his way out, he discovered a gas leak and wasn't comfortable just leaving that client with a gas leak. I think that's a really reasonable justification for running late, as justifications go, and I understand that sometimes sh*t happens with schedules. The important thing is that John called me immediately to let me know what was going on, and kept in touch as he had updates on his ETA. Communication is key, and he did a fine job of it. Once John was here, it was in fact just about 3 hours to complete the job; he wanted to redo a couple fittings because they were a flared a little off-center. As someone who likes to see things done the right way, I completely appreciate that. There was also a minor modification needed to a cover on the outdoor unit of the system in order to run the control wires the right way. I found his demeanor friendly and that he was easy to work with. He sent us an invoice with no surprises on it whatsoever-- just a labor charge for three hours of work and the cost of the nitrogen for the pressure test. Now we have a nice temperature-controlled master bedroom, thanks to Bodnar putting the finishing touches on our installation rather than turning up his nose at the work like everybody else. Ductless mini-splits are really fantastic, incredibly efficient, and not all that hard to install if you're handy. And when you get to the end and need the final checks and startup, you should certainly consider Bodnar to help you finish! read more

I have this experience with Mr Bodnar, after I called for service my heater. When he came he strongly recommended change whole unit. I refused and just ask for change thermostat what make unit work. Then he installed thermostat. I ever ask for estimate for new units, he will stop later. After 2 weeks I recieve bill for $ 260,00 . $140 for 1 hour labor and $120 for thermostat. This thermostat on web cost $38, and 6 of them cost $ 136,00. I send them copie of both , pic thermostat installed and price of him. I got call from office lady/his wife, I should next time buy my own part. Yes I will, I don't need pay 3 time more for your thermostat , and I will not contact this company for any work. Our home just wasn't heating up the way it should be. The furnace is only a couple of years old so we knew it shouldn't have gone out yet. John came out and checked the ducts and did an through inspection of the system. He mentioned that it was highly unlikely, but perhaps a bird had flown in the tiny vent pipe on the side of the house and that could be what was causing the problem. He went outside to check and that is exactly what had happened. We now have full heat again in the house! John was honest and his rates are good. Every Summer, my air conditioner needs a service. I've had multiple circuit boards replaced. The unit repeatedly freezes then the melting condensation would reek havoc with the machinery. John has an extreme attention to detail, and he doesn't cut corners. I have a particularly difficult set-up (very cramped attic), and John has spent multiple hours trying to come up with solutions to my problems even though I'm sure he has other more important jobs to attend to. John doesn't try to do work just for the sake of it, and he'll tell you when he thinks you're better off using someone else. I had John come out to verify an inspection that another company had given me. John took apart a portion of my furnace to show me that I DID NOT have a cracked heat exchanger, hence no carbon monoxide was coming into the house as the other guy had claimed.
