You know, Teddy's is a place a grew up with, I really love everything from the fries, the steak burgers to the Italian beef. If I could make a recommendation, go for a medium fries, a dipped Italian beef with giardiniera and sweet peppers, can't go wrong! A cup of cheese to go with the fries is an excellent choice as well. What else can I say, the staff is kind, the atmosphere is classic Chicago land and the food is great! If you haven't tried Teddy's, do yourself a favor and check it out! You won't be disappointed. As I had a short amount of time, I wanted to look for a decent place that has good food and was quick. I've eaten at Teddy's Red Hots before but seldom really visit that side of town. I wasn't thrilled. I wanting to eat a little healthier so I chose the grilled chicken sandwich. I know this place isn't that healthy but it had to do. But since I'm not very good disciplined, I added a small fry and a Pepsi to my meal. I was very surprised and disappointed that they don't have a combo type of meal, especially in price. The chicken sandwich was just ok, seasoned with salt and pepper but cooked to perfection. Kind of bland but still tasty. It came with a tomato and lettuce on a basic bun. As for the fries, they were delicious but overly salty, just like most places do. I got there about 11:00, right after opening. The owner works at the counter taking orders and seemed to me like he wanted to up-sell lunch. Maybe it's me or he's trying to be thorough, but if I wanted to order the fries with cheese, I would have ordered it that way. The cost to me was a little over priced. The chicken sandwich was $7.95. Fries and drink was about $2.95 each. As for the price, I think you can go somewhere else and get a better lunch for the same or less price. Mother's day weekend, my husband was in the Downers Gove area and noticed a Teddy's which happens to be my favorite Beef, but not in Downers, we go to the one in Darien. He goes in and buys it for me as a surprise. Truly the worst beef I have ever had! The meat was dark brown hard and dry, with very little flavor. My husband had a combo, beef was the same and his sausage was dry and burnt. We ate some of it but not all of it like we do from Darien and talked about how different the two locations were. This was purchased early in the afternoon. Sometime in the early evening I look at my bank account on line and notice a charge for $61.83, I was in shock! We ordered, 1 beef hot peppers on the side, 1 combo sweet peppers, 1 cheese burger, 1 small fry and an Italian Ice. Not only was that extremely expensive, right below that charge was another $61.83 charge from Teddy's. I asked my husband and he told me when he paid, the man told him it didn't go through and told him to put the card and pin # back in. My husband hates doing things like this so he had me call. A man answered as I started to explain the double charge he interrupts me and says Ma'am there is no way you were charged twice its impossible. I started to tell him that it is possible, because I was looking at it on my account. He said why you mad at me I said I'm not mad I just want the second charge credited back to my account. He said I am only the night time cashier what you want me to do. I said that's not my fault you chose your career. The hot dog was tasty,I love that it was charred and not boiled.I think that boiled hot dogs have no flavor.I also enjoyed the nice sized tomato slices. This place has been around forever. Think Portillo's but not as good and 50% more expensive! The best item on the menu is probably the Italian ice. It's made fresh and typically offer 3 different flavors. I recommend taking it home and mixing with vodka. Food wise I would say go with the cheesy Italian beef. If you want a dog or burger, get it on the pretzel bun. Of course you pay more, but I think it makes it better. If you order a burger or chicken, expect to wait 10 minutes. The burgers are sometimes decent, but can get way over cooked. Same with the chicken which more often tastes like sub par grocery store catering. Bottom line, it's just not worth the price. One adult and 3 kids should not cost over $50. Again I can get better food priced more reasonably at other places. read more

Just a little bit South of the intersection of 63rd and Main Street in Downers Grove lies a little place called Teddy's Red Hots. It has a small attached parking lot, but a decent amount of seating and is an overall clean restaurant. In going into Teddys I decided to try the hot dog with everything, fries and a drink. The hot dogs I received came on a regular non-poppy seed bun. The bun was fairly soft but did not appear to be steamed. The hot dog itself was skinless and slightly longer than a normal Chicago style hot dog, it was well heated and had a good flavor. The pickle used was a thinner pickle spear, it was a bit on the sour side but fortunately not too thick. The tomato chunks used here however were on the thick side and were a bit too much for the hot dog. The sport peppers used weren't too hot and added a nice flavor. I didn't detect any celery salt on the dog, the onions were applied well and I liked the fairly sparring usage of mustard and relish. The fries included were of the crinkle cut variety. They had nice crisp outsides and soft insides, they weren't too greasy but were a little light on salt. Overall these were decent fries but something extra (cup of cheese) might be needed to enhance the flavor here as without the salt they were a tad bland. Overall I liked both my hot dog and fries at Teddy's Red Hots. I'd recommend stopping by if you're in the area, it's by no means the best hot dog you'll find in Chicagoland, but it's better than average. read more

Stopped by here cause of the Italian ice sign. The parking lot was empty as well as the dining area. The inside was inviting and looked recently renovated. Digital menu and all. They had four types of Italian ice available: lemon, banana, raspberry and orange. We got a traditional lemon and raspberry in a medium. The total was $10 which was surprising since we were recently at Jonnie's Red Hot in Melrose Park and for two large is was $6. And I thought Jonnie's could have charged more for their ice cause it was that great. Lemon ice was kinda weak. I didn't like that it had small chucks of lemon instead of large wedges. The raspberry was amazing. It was so refreshing. If it was a hot sunny day instead of a stormy day it would have been 10X more awesome. Would go back if I was REALLY craving it. It tasted just like every other hot dog, fries and Sprite that I've had at every other hot dog stand I've ever been to. So I'm not sure why he was so excited. The beef was amazing got the cheesy beef for around 7 bucks and a small fry. Crinkle cut fries salted perfectly. The beef was tender and juicy better then protillos for sure but at portillo's you get more for your money the sandwich is about a third less than what you get at portillo's. What portillo's doesnt have is the Italian ice. Its fresh made and always have different flavors. I got strawberry peach which tasted like a pink starburst with real pieces of fruit in it. Will be going back to try other stuff.. wanted to try the philly cheese stake but it was 12 bucks. That's the only downfall are the prices and the reason I dont go here often.
