I've been hearing about this place. Read that the chocolate haupia pie is a must try. I was driving home from a day at the beach and decided that if it was still open when we went by I'd stop. Sure enough we got there 15 minutes before they closed. I had a couple of people in line in front of me. Most of the items in the display case were gone and I didn't see the chocolate pie so I asked. She pointed me toward the cooler where I could choose from individual slices or whole pies. Boy could I have been in trouble so many varieties to choose from. But the time our group had made it out to Ted's all the fresh pies were out but we were lucky enough to snag the last chocolate haupia pie from the prepackaged fridge section. We came for lunch after our morning in Hale'iwa and it was the best lunch. We both got the mixed three lunch plate. I got the spicy shrimp, bbq short ribs, and the bbq chicken with extra Mac . The meal also comes with a pie so I picked the blueberry cheese pie. My finance got the same mixed three plate option with chicken katsu, teriyaki beef, and bbq short ribs with a macadamia nut pie. We shared everything and the best thing we had was the bbq chicken and katsu! Highly recommend getting those two! Both of the beef dishes did not really stand out to us and I personally thought the teriyaki beef was a bit salty, but my husband liked it. The shrimp were good but very rich which I was not expecting. The service was great also. They had forgotten the Mac on my plate and the extra Mac on the side so when he told the lady she checked his receipt and tried to get it to us as fast as possible. For the mishap, she offered us an extra pie (we picked the lilikoi), which I'm glad we got because it was our favorite one of the three that we selected. The best spicy garlic shrimp we had our whole trip! The whole meal was tasty and very filling. I got the mixed plate with two proteins: spicy garlic shrimp and the teri beef. The beef was okay - a bit chewy and tough. The sauce was still very flavorful. We also got a slice of pie. I got the Chocolate Haupia Cream pie. I thought it was really good with a great flaky crust. However, I wasn't blown away by it. It tasted like a grocery store chocolate cream pie (still had a great flavor, but maybe not worth the price). We ordered online ahead of arrival and I don't think we saved any time in doing so. Our order came out 20 minutes after the estimated time from the online order (so it took about 50 minutes total). I finally had a chance to experience the infamous Ted's Bakery located in the North Shore of the island. I've never made it in during previous visits to the island because either the lines were always too long, or I just always had a packed agenda and couldn't hang in North Shore for too long. Nonetheless, I was able to sneak in on a busy weekday afternoon during this trip. The menu has a bit of everything including burgers, shrimp plates, sandwiches, steaks, chicken, pork chops, mixed plates, pies, pastries, cakes, desserts, and everything in between. I arrived late in the game so what I really wanted to try (Spicy Garlic Shrimp) was already sold out for the day. I ended up ordering the Garlic Shrimp Rice Plate which came with a whopping two scoops of white rice, a scoop of macaroni salad, and a free slice of pie of my choice (I chose the Strawberry Guava Cream Pie). The garlic butter sauce on the shrimp was rich and very creamy -- pretty impressive for such a huge tourist attraction. The mac salad was standard in that it wasn't too creamy or dry for tasting. My slice of pie was the perfect hint of fluffy sweetness as a dessert to wrap up lunch. The fragrance of sweetness certainly fills the air as you walk up to the restaurant, and remains in full effect throughout the entire visit. There is no indoor seating -- only outdoor but it is covered with a tarp. Bring bug spray if you are prone to mosquito bites anyway. Restrooms are outdoors also so bring hand sanitizer, wipes, etc. to make it easier. Parking should be easy. Worth a stop when visiting North Shore! read more

Popular as heck, but far off from the touristy parts of south Oahu and in a bit of a corner around the North Shore, Ted's is popular as heck, and for good reason. Known for their pies, Ted's also offers plate lunches, boasts plenty of outdoor seating and plenty of parking spots available. While we didn't come here for the plate lunches, we did come here to grab a few pies and we were not disappointed. Unfortunately, we only grabbed the Chocolate Huapia and the Macadamia Nut pies--both were super excellent. Ted's have their pies pre-made and pre-packaged in the a fridge where you can grab, pay, and go. But be warned, it's about a 1.5 hr drive back to Waikiki and the pies need refrigeration. Joined the que and got to the front, where we ordered up a mix plate, some burgers for the kiddos, and of course, some pies. Mac nut and a guava. Plates were decent. Not the best I've had, but it sure beats the overpriced American style food at the resort. The plate had some katsu, teri beef, and spam. All hit the spot. Katsu was a little lacking in meat though. Mac salad was nice. The kids were okay with the burgers, the big one told me 5 out of 10. It looked okay to me, but I probably would pass since they're not known for it. They do have an extensive breakfast menu, so if you're in the area, probably come by and try this place out. Tons of tourists here. The pies though. Oh my. The mac nut version is probably in my top 3 pies of all time. And I've had pies from around the world. Including pecan pies down south.
