Ted's Fish Fry is engrained in the culture of Albany life, it's definitely a staple. I grew up in the area and have been going to Ted's for years. Literally 16+. I had a great experience at Ted's today. First time there and I ordered the fish sandwich combo with onion rings, cole slaw and a drink. Service was friendly and fast. Food was exactly what I would expect from a fish fry joint. Sandwich was great, onion rings were great and the cole slaw was fine. I was completely full after all that. All for under $10 too! Read some of the bad reviews on here and all I can say to them is adjust your expectations. It's a local fish fry joint folks, not upscale fine dining. As far as unfriendly staff comments...work on thickening up your skin a little bit. Again, it's a fish fry joint, not a feel good coffee bistro. I'll be back on future visits to Albany. read more

Lunch- Went today for the first time and the line was out the door. Impressed how fast the line moved and the efficiency of the crew. Had a clam roll with fries that fit the bill. $9.95. I'm from Massachusetts and I can't get a clam roll for under $15. With that being said, these were not Clam Shack clams with bellies! Their fish fries are fresh and very tasty, but their side orders could use some work. The fries, especially, I found to be undercooked. The onion rings were OK. Visited Western Ave. location via Grubhub. The order arrived very fast. However the $20 fish dinner special was missing the soup that was included with it. I informed Grubhub that a portion of the meal was missing. They credited back the entire meal. I called the location and asked to speak to the manager. i heard her say he wants to speak to the manager. The manger declined and instead said what does he want. I tried to explain to her that we were getting and entire meal at no cost and I didn't think that was right for just the missing soup. She seemed confused and said he really should speak to you. By then I was so frustrated I said forget it if the manager doesn't want to speak with me so be it. I also ordered the grilled Chicken sandwich combo meal with lettuce and tomato. Well the tomatos were end pieces (meaning the end with the stems) Which is just ridiculous. On top of that the chicken was 1/3 the size of the stale bun. Avoid this location. I use to live in a penthouse at Power Parks Loft in Lansingburgh and visited my "neighbor" Ted's and that place was the best. I called another location to follow up to see if there was a district manager to speak with. I was told each place had a manager. I asked about a district manager. They said Billy. so here is where I landed. Sad. read more

Our experience at Ted's Fish Fry today was almost indescribably bad. The fried fish strips on rolls came out quickly, but they were bland. A 15" long strip of fish on a standard sized cold hot dog roll. We ordered two small clam chowders and a pint size order. We had to wait so long for the chowder (over 15 minutes) that three of us ate our fish fry rolls while one of us waited at the counter for the chowder. The person who waited finally came to the table to enjoy a cold fish fry. We had ordered a hot chocolate that, despite numerous requests, never arrived. They refunded our money for that. When we finally sat down together, the chowder was cold and had the consistency of wall paper paste. It was inedible, so we threw it away. Another patron asked to speak with the manager to complain about the food and the wait. She was treated so rudely, that we opted to post our review on Yelp instead of complaining. I'll consider it a $45 learning experience. We'll not be going back ... ever. Ted's had a great reputation, but for us, it is ruined. read more

Stopped here randomly on our way to Philadelphia from Vermont and it was great! This place is not fancy by any means but the food is great and the service is quick. I got the buffalo cod, he got the clams and we split a fish taco. The fish taco was meh but if you want a good fish taco, then I'd say go to a Mexican place anyway; but our two main meals were so good and so fresh. This is our standard fish fry joint. We sometimes do the pound of fish on Fridays which is so lightly battered and lightly fried- just perfect! We tried the fish platter and it's slightly more expensive than what we pay at off shore in Rensselaer but the fish is just so delicious here that sometimes it is worth the drive and higher cost. The calamari and fried shrimp sides are a must order. Friendly staff. read more

Fried fish in-o-bun. Fried foot long fish in a weiner bun is a local spin on the fish and chips deal. I come from panko breaded fillet ala British style fast food flavor part of the country. There is another competing joint that rhymes with Bob and Ron's nearby doing the same hot dog bun overflowing with fried strip of fish splashed with chili sauce. Ted's uses Haddock not Cusk (used at Bob and Ron's). What the F is a cusk? I had to google image it just to verify it was actually a fish and not some freak of nature like a Northern Snake Head. Its a freak. No doubt dwells below 20,000 leagues. Stick with the boring Haddock. Ted's fish is lightly breaded, not greasy, not fishy. Fries pretty standard. The real treat.... watching the soup Nazi guy behind the counter serving up specials to unsuspecting patrons. This guy has the personality like Mr. Creasote from Monty Pythons Meaning of Life. His co-workers scurry about with their heads down obviously in mortal fear that they might set off Master Blaster (Beyond Thunderdome reference...c'mon...stay with me) and get their hand shoved in the fish fryer as punishment. Some might be intimidated...I however found the guy hilarious. Besides, If I set him off, theres no way that athlete is commin over the counter before I made it out into the parking lot. Bottom line: Food...standard fare, entertainment....waaay above standard. Btw, don't knock Northern Snake Head until you've tried it. read more

Delicious! Classic fried fish on a steamed bun with their signature chili condiment sauce! Fries were crispy and fluffy at the same time and the Manhattan clam chowder was flavorful and tangy. I tried this place after craving fried fish bc it was close to our hotel. The portion size was good. I got the fish and chips dinner. The menu doesn't specify how many pieces of fish come with the meal but I received 3 relatively long pieces and 3 really small pieces that reminded me of nuggets. Aside from that the fish smelled extremely fishy which cod normally does but you could tell it was previously frozen. I know most fish is however the taste kinda reminded me of fish sticks from the grocery store. The french fries were good and the tarter sauce was good (tarter sauce is a big deal to me). I probably won't return. I'm pescatarian and a real stickler for fish. I wouldn't not suggest this place bc again it isn't bad. Just not my cup of tea, and that's okay. read more

Several weeks ago we had a small family gathering in the Albany area to scatter a family member's remains. His favorite place to eat was Teds in Lansingburgh so we went there for lunch after. It was a group of about 20 right at lunchtime, so we called Teds to give them a heads up. The staff could not have been more accommodating! Finally got a chance to try this location out after only getting my fish fry from Bob and Ron's. The inside is a bit cramped and small, and I'm not crazy about the ordering situation. When it gets busy, I can't see how the one guy taking the orders could possibly remember everything. The area where you order is kind of small and cramped. They also have Pepsi products not Coke :-( but onto the food...The fish fry was pretty average, but enjoyable. I wish they would give two hot dog buns instead of one because the fish fry was so long and really could've used the support of an extra bun for the long edges. The fries were average as well, nothing special there. I was kind of turned off by their addition of cheese on the fish fry and fries, as it's just a piece of square cheese thrown on top. On a foot long fish fry, that's not an even distribution. I wish I had ordered the onion rings because they looked good, and were a pretty big portion.
