Tiny little whole in the wall with very simple utilitarian decor inside and the expected British themed wall hangings and even a ref phone booth. I just got the standard fish and chips. I generally try to avoid fried food, but I had heard so many good things about Lil Britain that I had to try it. We ordered the fish combo for a late lunch, picked it up and enjoyed it at home. The fried shrimp, clam strips, scallops and I believe haddock were heavily breaded with a tasty batter and golden brown. The fish tasted good and was not greasy. The French fries were plentiful and delicious. The two sides we got, Cole slaw and pickled beets were very good. Price was reasonable. Preparation time was quick and the meal was very satisfying. While I prefer my fish broiled or baked this fried meal was a treat and I can unhesitatingly recommend the restaurant. The fact that you can order by phone, park behind the restaurant and they will bring your order to you is a great convenience. I would like to comment on ambience but in my case, it was the interior of my car. read more

So this is not a place you go because you like the decor. The inside is pretty sparse, but functional, and clean. You go here because of the food and the service. Everything is really fresh, and made to order. The fish is freshly battered (so are the shrimp), and the portions are great. I also recommend the burgers, they are not anything crazy gourmet, but they are fresh, and for only a little more than the place with the arches down the road, you get something that you know is real, freshly prepared, and on an amazing bun. The chicken tenders are the only thing that's just kinda OK, but only because they don't make them in-house. They work for a picky kid, but otherwise stick with the other stuff on the menu. I haven't tried the pies, but they are freshly made there too. There is also a little assortment of British food and candy there, which might be something a little fun that you don't normally find here. Not a great spot to bring a big group, but very worth stopping in if you want a quick bite while you are passing through downtown Bennington. read more

The best meal I have ever had. When me and my significant other want fish, they're always the first ones that come to mind. We enjoy their fish. It is so crispy not greasy and don't get me started on the gravy. We prefer to sometimes do the mashed potatoes over the chips, which are just as fantastic. I would prefer to eat my food at the table i paid additional cost to enjoy it. Again as i have mentioned in other reviews this has nothing to do with those that service the customers nor the patrons that frequent visit but when you charge a certain amount there are additional cost pushed on the customer for a reason. The food was done very well, the large portion was defiantly enough food. The chips were not exactly great but they were not bad. The large chicken fingers was plenty. Sooo good The fish was perfectly breaded and flaky. I wish i had the chance to use some HP but maybe when the dining area opens up again. From the outside window it appears to be a nice fun entreating little dining area. As some of you may know this is not available, its rather a bit confusing as there is two areas to pickup food or is that pay then pickup.... Not sure. Then when trying to pay over the phone i was asked for my credit card number, um haven't done that one before and wasn't going to start. So when i said i was paying cash they wanted to know if i was paying exact or if i needed change. I mention that I would need change but in the end i told them to keep it as i wanted the staff to have something for doing all this extra unnecessary steps that are not required. The majority of the restaurants and shops in Bennington are not performing these kinds of measures anymore except for the Chinese's food restaurant on main. Closing this little gem in Ben is putting out some great food but at nearly $15 a head its not worth my trouble eating it in my car or on a park bench. Fantastic fish and chips. Super flakey, moist. Baggers (sausage) and chips was also good. Be prepared to wait 20 min for food to be prepared but you can tell it is fresh and small local place, 6 tables total. Cheap prices. Keep up the good work. Recommendation would be to look into updating the British flag awning in front it is showing age and would catch more folks eye. read more

We had fish and chips in England but this was better! The portions were perfect, the fish was cooked well and came out piping hot and the coating was crisp. Fries were crispy and the coleslaw was nice. All in all it was a very pleasant experience. We tried the root beer which I really liked as well although some might find it a little sweet. The place had a lot of British kitsch and although it is a small shop it was clean and the hostess was very pleasant. Food came out quickly too. We will definitely go back again! read more

This is likely my third or fourth visit in the last thirty years since moving over from England. Past visits, and that includes when the shop was owned by ex pat's have been excellent and the food was authentic. Today however the experience was mediocre. The fish was acceptable but the chips were dark and they were not tasteful the way British chips are and the usual way Li'l Britain have presented them. Service is hard to quantify because apart from the assistant behind the counter taking the money, you have to discard your waste in garbage bins (recycle also) in the restaurant and situated near a table with chairs in the front window. Nice! The assistant didn't seem all that happy in her work. There's NO signage so you have to be told that you need to come to the front counter to choose your menu, order AND pay prior to receiving your meal - having just tipped at said counter after payment. I was going to bring my family over later this week to remind them of what we have been missing but I think I'll give it a miss. read more

Stop by there today. Always wanted to stop thought it was take out only. Not allot of tables but you can eat there. Had the fish and chips as well as my wife did. Very nice flavorful never been to England but I would think it would be like this and on a rainy day. Park across the street in the lot and walk across the street because there's no parking on the street. So now that I found that out I will stop more often when I'm in the area read more

I'm sure most of you will discount my review for this little fact I'll put up front: I have never had the fish & chips. And this is quite obviously a fish & chips shop. That said, they have other stuff including innnnnnncredible burgers (the jalapeño burger is life changing). We've gotten takeout a few times and have loved it for both lunch and dinner. The curry sauce you can get with the fries is a nice change up from the usual ketchup/bbq sauce/mayo we usually reach for. I've never eaten in the shop, only gotten takeout but the space is bright and clean with no frills except a big, red phone booth. They have candy from across the pond for sale and a cooler with drinks. Staff is always friendly, both over the phone and in person. They ask if you need plastic ware which is nice. I always get annoyed when I go pick up takeout and get a bunch only to throw it out. Definitely a worthy spot on the Bennington lunch/dinner circuit. It's tucked right off the Four Corners so it's super accessible and there is street and free lot parking all around! read more

Service was extraordinarily good: take out brought to my car. Only improvement I wish to suggest is for their own benefit: the shop looks closer from the front. I would have gone here 4-5 times already if I knew they were opened. Shop looks permanently closed from the street. we stopped in here for a late lunch while visiting tourist sites in Bennington VT The buildout is spare and utile. It has a window that looks out on a park, but the tables and chairs are not much. there are no waiters and you order at a counter and then one person from behind brings food to you. The food is the star here. The menu is straight up british fare, fish and chips, and the like. We had very standard such plates, and they were excellent, modestly priced, and very good. The restaurant is located in the downtown, also a plus. So, food five stars, ambience 3 stars, overall 4 stars. read more

FANTASTIC! the best food that we found in Bennington. we never eat fried foods and we did have upset stomachs from our fish and chips but that is mainly becase we all ate EVERY BITE of our meals and that's a lot of fried food for people that Never eat it.. Yum! Nailed it! The place was SPOTLESS clean, much appreciated. The service was friendly and warm, and they asked how we liked things after we ate, which was so nice. The fish was perfect, tender, flavorful, nice batter, cooked to just the right color and crispness. I took the tartar sauce and cocktail sauce just to try them, but the fish is so good it stood alone with a splash of malt vinegar. Superior fries. Loved that they bottled their own label sodas. Although we really liked the batter a lot - beer batter style not breadcrumbs- The seafood is frozen and we could tell straightaway. However the fish was good but the scallops & shrimp, not so much. The chips were hot and crunchy. And the tartar sauce was tangy and really good! Prices are on the higher side. Limited British style retail and specialty sodas. Limited seating.
