Teikoku has great food and looks nice, but if you look closely the restaurant has an ant infestation. Right when you walk in the door one of their cup and food decorations was swarmed in ants. Even worse, they sat us at a table at the back right against the wall of the restaurant and that table had ants as well. We asked to move tables with no issue, although the staff wasn't apologetic at all. Then they sat another family there and the same thing happened. I would've thought they learned their lesson but then they sat ANOTHER group of people. Really? That's horrible service. The restaurant was not packed so I don't get why they continued to sit people there when they knew it was a problem. I can't recommend this place because of the ants and the service. I've always enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. What I'm not getting is being told that checks can't be split. AND that they can only take 4 cards max on the check. So I'm meeting 5 other people here tonight. So not only do we have to screw around with a single check at the end of the night but 4 of us have to pay for 6 of us? Makes absolutely 0% sense. When I called the restaurant the woman who answered was extremely apologetic and wanted to do whatever she could to make it right. Dippy, inconsistent staff, quite pricey and out in the sticks, but this is the most authentic Japanese food I've had in a long time. I had the opportunity to speak with their sushi chefs - they're actually from Japan and know what they're doing (what a concept, huh?). Just got delivery from these guys and was so impressed that I was motivated to write a Yelp review (rarely happens). What stands out about this restaurant are the unique flavors, combined with high quality food -- the things that make people like me coming back repeatedly. First off, the panang beef curry was incredible. Just love all the flavorings and the bed of green beans topped with ribeye. The chicken red curry was also great. The flavoring on the cold sesame ginger asparagus was awesome. Loved the salmon tartare, with its unique toppings. Those four dishes stood out to me. The tapas platter was solid, not a standout in my mind. The Teikoku sashimi fell all over the place in the takeout box and a lot of the flavors mixed together and the presentation wasn't great. One of the best aspects of this restaurant is the amazing atmosphere. I love the shoji screens, the tatami room, the outdoor waterfall, the music and the lighting - it's intimate and zen. That's why it baffles me when people bring young children here for dinner. Teikoku is best suited for adults and couples. So, with all due respect, please do not disrupt the chill atmosphere by bringing your baby or a child to dinner unless they're quiet. Here's a breakdown of my experiences: Service: Sometimes the waitstaff is friendly and attentive. Other times, I've had my food show up with no silverware or no small plates. We had an awful waiter named Zachary at brunch who didn't come to our table for over 20 minutes, took our drink orders and never came back once. (For the price and quality of this restaurant, it was unacceptable.) Brunch: Teikoku has a very impressive brunch service. It's an all you can eat buffet with a HUGE variety of food, from filet to grilled salmon to sushi to dumplings, all for $25 a person. You also get a free mimosa. It's never overly crowded. Pad thai: Either incredibly spicy or so sweet it's inedible. It's disappointing when your waiter admits you shouldn't order it when you return. Sushi rolls: Better quality at brunch. For dinner, sometimes they've been rolled perfectly. On busier nights, I've had issues. Apps: The spring rolls and rock shrimp are a good size for the price, well seasoned and delicious. Can't go wrong with these. Miso soup is awesome and flavorful. Chicken skewers were a bit tough and chewy. WARNING about the Kobe beef hot rock: You can grill kobe beef on a hot rock at your table. While this may sound fun, it REEKS and makes the whole room smell, especially the tatami room (which has no ventilation). Please, for the courtesy of those around you, don't order it. There might be a person like me nearby who could have a mild asthma attack from the fumes. TL:DR: Teikoku's strong points are definitely its appetizers and delicious brunch. The sushi rolls can be a hit or a miss during on busy nights. Pad thai has been a disaster every time I've ordered. Get the spring rolls and rock shrimp for apps. Came for Christmas Eve with the fam and the place was packed with families and people of all ages. Excellent service and much higher quality sushi - but TINY portions. Teikoku has high quality food, but isn't cheap. We had an 8:00 reservation, but had to wait at the bar for about 40 minutes. We didn't mind since we were able to snag a few seats and the cocktails were really good. We started off with the Kanpachi Crudo and the steamed gyoza. It is hard to find kanpachi on menus so I was pumped to see it. Appetizers were amazing. We ordered the Chef's selection sushi for 2. The fish was amazing and fresh, but I was really disappointed with the amount we got. I was still hungry after our meal. Another contributor was the chef put wasabi in between the fish and the rice on all of the sushi pieces. I hate wasabi so I was only able to eat the sashimi and the roll we were given. I was extremely disappointed, I don't know why they'd assume everyone likes wasabi without putting it in the description. We ordered the fruit fondue and received grapes, pineapple and unripe mango, which I thought was a strange selection. Unkind to aging veterans. A WWII vet had just received an honor at the local memorial. It was very clear he was a WWII veteran. We went into the empty restaurant for a quick bite to eat and a celebratory drink. They only allowed us to sit on the high top counter bar stool - or the really low chairs. Neither will work for a 97 and 94 year old. They did not want us to sit in a regular chair and it became an issue with the waiter and Manager when we did so. This was an empty restaurant in the afternoon. They absolutely did not want us there. And we will never return. Not a bad restaurant for Newtown Square without a doubt. The whole Thai/Japanese fusion thing is a bit confusing though. I thought the whole fusion fad was over and done with a decade ago. The fish selection is extremely low. This is a place for beginners who eat mainly rolls and get full off of rice. The nigiri and gunkan comes out 1 piece per order, which I still can't understand and is a complete rip-off. So, if you enjoy being overcharged for mediocre quality fish than this is definitely the place for you! A better option would be Kooma in downtown West Chester. read more

As the purveyor of my first post-pregnancy sushi and bottle of stout, it's tempting to give Teikoku five stars. The fact that it was the site of my first outing sans the little one since her auspicious debut also casts a rosy glow over my most recent visit. But let's be honest -- I'd be tempted to give five stars to any restaurant that provided me with the above-mentioned comforts. At Teikoku, the sushi, while good, is only five-star quality if you go on a Monday or Tuesday night when they have special deals on their rolls (plus $10 off bottles of wine on Mondays). And even then, the best part of the veggie roll is its $3 price tag. As for the pad thai, well...pad thai is one of those foods that I like but have no basis by which to critique. I can't really tell you what makes a good pad thai or a bad pad thai...so, with that in mind, Teikoku's pad thai seems perfectly adequate if a little overpriced. And that vegetarian entree? As Dave H. pointed out, it's laughable. A plate of rice accompanied by a tureen of green curry sauce is not an entree! Even a small handful of vegetables might save the dish...maybe... Went here last night with my 19 month old daughter, my husband and his Mother last night for dinner. The food never disappoints. I ordered the old stand by of Pad Thai, Mark had a sushi roll special that looked really yummy, and my MIL had the butter fish, while Valen enjoyed throwing her buttered noodles all over herself and the floor. So, this place didn't completly satisfy my sushi craving but it dampered it quite a bit (possibly unfair, my craving is constant). I've had some damn good sushi. This place was pretty good. I wouldn't say the most awesome but between great and really great. We got a huge sashimi and roll platter for 50$ which wasn't bad. They had a nice special roll called king and queen that had spicy salmon on one side and something on the other (I was dead focused on the salmon and wouldn't even have noticed if the chef handing it to me was on fire) I judge by the shrimp tempura roll since I get it everywhere, and again...great.. but not overwhelming. Though awkward conversation is had, I would recommend sitting at the sushi bar since their preparration and presentation was what made the experience. the chef's were awesomely nice and traditional. accept plates using both hands and bow. Just got back from a so-so experience at Teikoku. This was my first time there, my other half had been there once before, and we did arrive later in the evening, a Wed at 9:30 (they close at 10). We started with two Shushi rolls; the Godzilla was unique and delicious with interesting textures (shrimp tempura, avocado, strawberry). A "bread-and-butter" roll, the Spicy Yellowtail was very pedestrian. I consider this, along with the Spicy Tuna, to be the basic foundation rolls and should be an indication of others not yet tried. Unfortunately the roll was not spicy, had a slightly fishy smell, and just blah. For the main course I had the Sesame Crusted Tuna with mashed yams and a chili soy sauce. I really enjoyed the tuna and yams. The sauce was more sweet and BBQy than I expected. But the dish did make up for the Yellowtail roll and I look forward to trying other dishes. She had the Pad Thai. I can best describe it as a disaster which is a shame as we came here for this dish which she had had on a prior visit. First off, the Bean Sprouts were missing and shredded Cabbage substituted. It turns out that there is a food recall on the sprouts; information that would have been more useful before we placed our order. Now, one changed ingredient would not have been a big deal except that the crushed peanuts were missing. Odd. And it was hot, scalding hot like it had been microwaved, which could explain the lack of taste in the noodles. I expected more from a restaurant that features an Iron Chef but am willing to let this one slide owing to the late hour. I work right up the road from this gem. Maybe it is because there are few decent lunch places to go, but the food here is always great. I mostly stick to their thai food, but the sushi I have shared has been decent. It is a bit pricey, but always filling and usually you leave with leftovers. Since I mostly go for lunch, the prices are a bit more manageable with Pad Thai for $10. Also, their lunch box is a great deal with Miso Soup, Salad, California Roll, Veggie Tempura, and your choice of Teriyaki all for $14. Their service is great and very quick-they are great at knowing that a lunch hour means a lunch HOUR! This is my favorite lunch outting place to visit in the newtown square area. I went to this restaurant for a party with a fixed menu. One of the dishes on the menu was Hawaiian Butterfield also known as White Tuna, Super White Tuna, and many other commercial names. It is Escolar. Since leaving Chicago, I still dearly miss all our awesome sushi places, and I haven't found too many suitable replacements here yet. But I was pleasantly surprised by Teikoku, especially considering its odd location. All the sushi we've tried so far has been pretty good, although admittedly we've only been here twice. My favorite maki is the Godzilla. Its ingredient list includes strawberries, avocado, honey, and crushed macadamia nuts. Yes, I like frou frou rolls -- so shoot me. The Godzilla is a taste sensation. I don't remember everything else we've tried here, but we've had some tasty tuna and salmon as well as a few other maki. As for non-sushi, THE SWEET POTATO FRIES ARE FAMAZING. Seriously, it's like eating dessert. Goodness gracious. The sesame chicken is good too. The yam mashed potatoes are a bit much, and that's coming from a person (me) who is obsessed with yams. Teikoku's family of restaurants puts on quite a few events, and we finally attended one recently. It was an organic wine mixer, and we had a lot of fun. For $35, you got four courses of food and wine (plus we got an extra tasting of wine because they were running late), plus 10% off your bill if you stayed and ate more. They weren't stingy with the wine either, and would come back and pour more for you if you wanted it. And the food was absolutely fantastic, every course. What a deal! Started coming here with my boyfriend and his family. Other sushi places don't even compare. The level of freshness and presentation are always very well done, and ChuCho the sushi chef (and the rest of the sushi team) is phenomenal! Derek takes great care of us every time we dine in! You MUST have the tuna bruschetta appetizer, the full aioli gives it such a great taste. We also love the yellowtail ceviche. Kobe beef hot rocks are always fun, you get to cook your own meet at your table on a 400 degree rock they bring out. Very tasty. Also try the wasabi mashed potatoes! First off, THIS RESTAURANT IS NOT IN PAOLI. It is on route 3 in Newtown Square...now on with the review... Is this the best sushi in Philly? No. But it is very good sushi, and definitely the best choice in the area. I've never been disappointed when eating there, which is pretty often since it's nearby and our default "I don't feel like cooking" hangout. We usually sit at the bar, which is usually pretty crowded. Everyone there is friendly and the service is good. The non-sushi menu items are also great - I particularly like the Seafood Drunken. Birthday dinner 2008. GF took me here to celebrate. The outside is gorgeous and the interior is cute. I had some chilled sake (very good) and a glass of riesling to accompany my yellowtail scallion roll and my scallop entree. The sushi was good, not great, and the scallops were cooked to perfection. My girlfriend's steak was overcooked. No dessert. Waitress was one of the worst I've ever had at a nicer place. Period. Her parents were there initially, as she was talking quite loudly and that fact became apparent, but I can excuse that. That's sort of a special thing. She was average to begin with but then she had a party of 8 come in right before we were served our entrees. From the time we finished our entrees until the time we saw our waitress again: 45 MINUTES. And the party of 8 was right next to us! She'd literally dote on them and then walk away without even checking in on us. I tried to flag her down a few times but she just ignored us. When you have an opportunity to dine at a place that combines Japanese and Thai cuisine AND you don't have to leave the suburbs to have that meal, I would call it a 'win/win'. Teikoku is a nice restaurant to have in the suburbs and gives some much needed flavor to the Delaware/Chester County area. Atmosphere - Inside Teikoku is a modern, contemporary take on Japanese style and architecture. From the ornate water features and bamboo floors, to the modern setup of its dining area, Teikoku captures the feeling of being in a Center City run restaurant. With a large seating area, and full bar for Asian tapas style appetizers while you wait, you feel at home and ready to enjoy your dining experience. Waitstaff - Waiters were dressed in clean black polos or button down shirts with black pants. Waitresses were the same, but a red sash across the waist was a unique little touch. Our waiter was very friendly, knowing both dining and beer specials inside and out. They use a tiered system of runners and waiters to bring out orders in a timely fashion. Food - We really enjoyed our appetizers in our party. The mix of fresh edamame in Sea Salt to Lobster Stuffed Dumplings, to the Chicken Satay all were fantastic. Lobster Dumplings are well worth the price and the plated dipping sauce was a nice touch as well. Chicken Satay came with a peanut style sauce and a pineapple salsa to try with the skewered meats. Really well done and flavorful. For our entrees, my counterpart ordered a sushi plate of eight pieces and one roll. Said it was above average to other places that he had dined. Not fantastic, but by no means was it a bad plate at all. I went with the Sesame Chicken stir fry, although I wished I went with the Pan Seared Chilean Sea Bass instead. Stir Fry was again good, but not the best take on it I've had. I would say that there are many choices for the bold, and next time I will go bolder with my dinner selection. Intangibles - Place sneaks up on you for parking lots, as there are small lanes to drive up to the restaurant. Be careful if driving out this way at night, saw a few deer on the side of the road and near restaurant grazing. Bar at front has specials which might be a good place to meet after work or before heading down the road to the movie theater for a night out. Those who love sushi will enjoy many different options, including specific kinds only made at Teikoku. Can be on the pricier end for dining, but worth it. Overall - Teikoku is a must try for those who enjoy Japanese food infused with Thai ingredients. Here's the dish on the fish: The quality of the sushi deserves 5 stars. The service 3 stars. But they are pricey, which gets 3 stars. Two of us had one drink each, no appetizers, no dessert and only ordered enough sushi so that we were still hungry when we left -- the bill was $85 plus tip. In comparison, at one of my favorite sushi restaurants in MD: between the THREE of us, we had one drink, two appetizers and so much sushi that we could barely finish it - -and the check was $85. As someone who is "a connoisseur" in Japanese/Sushi restaurants, and have visited HUNDREDS all over the country, I'm quite versed in the cuisine and experience. A friend of mine invited me to meet him there and raved about the cuisine and said it was one of the best places in/around Philadelphia. I, of course was up for it. I have to say, every restaurant is not perfect - there are the pros and cons to each and this applies to Teikoku. First, I have to say it had a nice ambiance to the restaurant - well decorated, and well-lit. However, the music (which was slightly louder than average) was terrible. Annoying elevator music - I was shocked to have heard it...in a restaurant. I've never heard elevator-esque music in ANY restaurant before. That has got to go. The service was great, our waitress was really knowledgeable, friendly, and definitely made the experience more worthwhile. All the staff seemed to be in a great mood with other guests at the restaurant. The menu - I have never seen so much overpriced sushi rolls/other items ... And for what you get. Again, I've been around the country and visited (too many) Japanese/Sushi restaurants in expensive/cheap markets to have an idea what it is fair for the price. The sushi roll menu was not diverse at all, despite 5-6 interesting/unique rolls. They were over-priced and small. Of course, the standard 6 pieces/roll was pretty much the norm for the 6-7 rolls we ordered. However, very small pieces....and the taste was nothing to write home about. I was really disappointed about that. There were other items on the menu which were interesting and unique, but over priced and definitely not worth the value. NOW I KNOW, this was a fine restaurant, and not a cheap hole in the wall joint - but I was still shocked at the prices for the portions, and for the item on the plate. I was really hoping for a better experience because of all the ''good'' things I heard about this restaurant. Again, if the elevator music goes, and the menu prices are re-adjusted to what is actually (and moderately) served, and the menu becomes more unique and diversified (this would be a great place if they added plenty more rolls to the menu) - this could be a great place to go. Drive past this place daily and wish I could eat there every night ...if I could afford it. :-( I went there a few times for special dinners and once with a group from work. The food is not cheap, portions are small - but worth it for me! My wife is Japanese and also enjoys it. I usually get some sashimi and the Kobe beef everything I ever had is delicious. I also like the bar, the atmosphere, special room for a larger (louder) crowd, servers are great and obviously the chefs know what they are doing! I have mixed feelings about this place. The atmosphere was pretty pleasant but there were definitely some details that had been overlooked. We sat under a light that had a brighter bulb in it than all the other lamps around us. This light was a little unpleasant to sit under because of its daylight hued brightness and it revealed spots on the walls that needed cleaning. I know that sounds picky, but it was pretty noticeable. For dinner, we started with the tuna tartare and then had the chefs choice sushi sampler and another roll. The tartare was really excellent... It was nicely balanced, with pleasant, subtle flavors. The sushi was good but not quite worth the price. I've noticed a lot of overpriced sushi around here but I feel that charge top dollar for it should strive to make the best possible sushi. The combination in the chefs choice was so-so (but that's just personal preference) and the quality of the fish was probably a 7 out of 10, so nothing to complain about exactly. I just felt a little underwhelmed for having spent $120 for dinner and drinks for 2. The service, however was really good and our waitress was attentive but not intrusive. read more

Teikoku is more of a roll house and food that is cooked..The sashimi is not worth the price and the older sushi chef makes you feel unwelcome to the point he is rude. Teikoku has become me and my boyfriend's go-to place when we're hungry but can't think of a place to eat - it's just that good. As far as decor and space goes, Teikoku has it all - outdoor seating, high ceilings, a bar, seats at the sushi bar. Love it. Check out the cool ceiling fans if you ever go. So last night, four of us went out for a birthday dinner and as usual, we were not disappointed. We all started with drinks - Chimay on tap (score!), Victory Pils on tap (yes yes), and two mixed drinks. All were delicious. We decided to skip appetizers and dive straight into entrees. We ordered the sesame crusted tuna, a few rolls from the sushi menu, the diver scallops, and the tempura udon. I have zero complaints! All of the meals were fantastic - the sushi was fresh and delicately prepared; the sesame tuna was amazing - the chili soy sauce was a delicious compliment to the mashed yams; the diver scallops were cooked perfectly in a flavorful saffron cream sauce; and the tempura udon (my favorite thing) was tasty and filling. (If you decide to order the udon, ask for more noodles!) After we stuffed our faces full of delicious, my sister and her BF decided to order the crème brulee. I didn't try any, but they raved about it. Dinner was delicious, service was fantastic, and the price was right! Excellent surprise. Nigiri sushi was properly prepared with good quality materials by a highly experienced chef. Rolls were disappointing and they were obviously prepared by a less skillful chef. Great to see they have good materials and a good chef; happy to revisit and try other items on the menu. Visited for brunch. Great selections of quality foods.
