Not sure how long his place has been open but I decided to give them a try and stopped in for breakfast tacos after my sons basketball game at Madison HS. What a disappointment! The first thing I noticed was the prices on the menu, $3.99 for a barbacoa Taco, hmmm?! The waitress told us the tacos were big so I gave her the benefit or the doubt and decided to order a couple of tacos. I was going to order a barbacoa and carne guisada but was told they weren't allowed to give samples of anything. So I played it safe and ordered a bean and cheese with bacon and a potato and egg with cheese. Kind of hard to mess up a bean and cheese right, well they did! Yes the tacos were huge but they lacked in flavor and were cold. Not even the cheese in my bean and cheese was melted. The tortillas were cold and eggs and potatoes in my other taco were cold as well. My friend ordered a Carne Guisada plate and surprise, surprise it was cold. Had I not been in a hurry I would of sent my food back. And don't ask for a to go cup, to go plate, extra salsa, or a refill on chips unless you want to pay more $$! In short bigger doesn't mean better I'll take a smaller, tastier, and hotter taco over your "Tejas" sized tacos any time. I'm glad that those who gave this place 4 or 5 stars had a better experience than I did but there will be no second chances for this place from me.... read more

Worse service ever!!! I walk in, stand at the counter and ask if I could taste the sweet tea- she declined. The lady at the counter stated we dont give out tastes. I asked why and she said because we dont and our manager says no. Then she proceeds to ask about my order. I told her I had called it in. Might I add.... this is not my 1st time coming but for sure my last! She asked how i was paying and i replied with my NFC on my phone. She starts going off in spanish and im like wth?? We were just speaking english 2seconds ago?? I understand but not speak the language. She says we dont have that and i need to pay another way. As angry as i am, I calmly told her I'd help her but she wasn't listening. I finally had to be a smart aleck and she got it. I step to a side by the busser's cart to wait for my order..... and low n behold I look down and the cart has 3 baby roaches running around on it. Now my family has 2 successful Mexican restaurant chains and growing up in that setting i know what good customer service is and that lady DID NOT display it. The tacos here are huge but tortillas were disappointing. One taco is easily the equivalent of 2 regular sized ones. This is the place to go if your into huge portions. I choose quality over quantity. Food was meh! Coffee was barely warm. Service good. read more

But the last time I stopped in I noticed a smell in the place that made me wonder if they were having plumbing problems. (Not to put too fine of a point on it). But the clincher for this less than positive review was when I ordered to go a couple of breakfast tacos, I was informed that there was a minimum $10.00 to use a debit card. Really disappointed today. I asked if they can dice up the bacon and mix it in the taco and they refused to do it. They said the egg and bacon is already prepared separately so that's why they will not mix it in. Ok so being from AZ I had to see what the hype was about these Carne Guisada tacos and let's just say I was NOT disappointed!! First of all the tacos are huge on a medium size flour tortilla (a little thicker than what I'm used to in AZ) not a fan of the tortilla but the Carne guisada was great! It had sort of like a gravy and I had mine with bacon and cheese I ordered two had I known how big they were one would have been enough. Tejas Café is my favorite kind of family owned dive. I always order the same thing... the #2... a crispy puffy taco and 2 cheese enchiladas. It's kind off the beaten path. This little treasure is hidden in a strip mall. The price is awesome. Everyone else raves about the breakfast tacos, but I'm not a breakfast taco kind of girl so I have yet to try them. Your tea glass never gets below half full, and the chip bowl is never empty... in my opinion, those are requirements for a good Mexican food experience. Try it, you'll love it! read more

The wonderful thing about the breakfast tacos here is that you don't have to eat 3 (or more) to get full, all you need is one of theirs. Heard really great things about this place and was so excited to give them a shot...First impression when I walked in wasn't great...Place looked very dingy and floors looked like they had not swept this week and today is Friday. I shrugged this off and pressed forward...I ordered a bacon egg potato w/cheese taco and a carne guisada w/cheese taco. Taco's are huge!!! One should be plenty for the average Joe but I got two just to be on the safe side. Carne guisada was on point, very tender and the flavors were excellent. Only complaint about the taco is I wish it was hot...I like my food piping hot but this was closer to lukewarm. The potato egg bacon with cheese taco was a fail... some of my potatoes were a little grayish even some of the eggs were a little off colored. Did not eat the odd colored edibles scrape them off the taco and salvaged what I could of the taco... the only way I would eat this Taco again is if it and me we're stranded on a deserted island. If you feel like expending $10.10 on a cheese enchilada plate with tea, on a hot reataurant (AC not working properly), the daily special is $6.79, since the minimum on credit card charges is $10.00, I guess they sell the tea for $3.00, cause my bill came out to $10.10.......food is ok, but you are in San Antonio, you can find way better places for half the price and AC working........Sorry Tejas Cafe never again read more

Place was full of flies and every single table was dirty. Had to clean our seats and waitress came and put the dirty utensil back onto our table after she picked it up from the floor. Waited for 30 minutes for 3 tacos only to find out that our order was never put in. They may be known for their carne guisada, but their service is horrible and you may find flies in your food. read more

Best Taco place on the NE side. Only 4 stars because all I get is bacon, potato and egg with extra bacon tacos and they are the BOMB! Big taco stuffed with bacon is delicious. Their hot sauce is really good too. If you like bacon, potatoes and egg then you will be in heaven. read more

I've been coming here for years and the food is always consistent and good. They have great big breakfast tacos that will fill you up. Carne guisada with cheese are awesome! Sweet tea is always on point. The only issue i have is the place needs a good cleaning. Floors, walls, menus and tables need a good scrubbing. GREAT!! I ordered a(1) barbacoa taco on corn w/guacamole and when it the waitress brought it out I could see meat bulging out. Most places give you two corn tortillas as one usually tears. Well in this case it didn't and I needed the second one to make a second taco. There was so much meat ad guacamole I was able to make two large tacos from the over stuffed giant taco. I moved to Vegas 7 years ago and their tacos are just not the same. Every time I come back home to visit my first stop is here at Tejas Cafe. Their carne guisada tacos re absolutely the best!!!!!!
