I don't really understand the hype. The food is bare-bones just-OK. 2.5 stars rounding down. Teriyaki chicken - chicken really overcooked. Flavour Ok, not great. Husband did not like high proportion of bean sprouts. Chicken karaage - dry and overcooked. Nice dipping sauce though. Rolls - fine for sushi but nothing to write home about. 3 stars or so. Assorted Tempura - batter was very tasty but very bready. All four of the vegetables were starchy (three pieces of squash - two of the same kind even I think - and a potato). I would have liked a carrot or a broccoli or just anything else for variety. It wasn't terribly "assorted". Would not order again. I wanted to get from Yagoto Sushi next door, but one of my kids doesn't care for sushi yet and Yagoto doesn't have as much non-sushi range. read more

Let's say in food business some think that the more they pay, the better the quality. Some restaurants thrive on the idea and crank up the prices and customers eat it up. While the food was not so bad here at Temaki, it was not extraordinary either. The food and service was average and the food came much later after you ordered. Prices though was something to chew on. $33 for Chirashi Don and $20 for a simple roll like Pacific Roll was just overwhelming. The restaurant itself is not that bad and perhaps the location and the type of customers eat there effect the prices. Overall, the food and service was average and the time to get your food was longer than other places while the prices were at least 1.5 more. I hope your experience is different than ours. read more

I was introduced to Temaki Sushi and Chef Hil from a friend. They've been operating for some time now (since 2003!), and Chef Hil is passionate about what he does and he does it exceptionally well. Their seafood is always fresh, and does not disappoint. The staff is attentive and well educated about their menu, they will make sure that your cup is always filled with tea and that you've ordered enough. Just take a look at the photos! I'd recommend coming here if you're looking for exceptional quality sushi, at a reasonable price. Hotate, Anago, Tamago, Aburi O Toro, and I can't remember.. _ I've been to @temaki_vancouver plenty of times but this is my first time trying their nigiri selection and I'm V impressed. It's great quality, good portions and selection especially for the price. They were all so delicious and decadent but my favourite would be the Aburi O Toro and Tamago. I've never had Aburi O Toro before and it looks like wagyu but it's not and pretty much just melted in mouth. Worst service I have experienced in a long time. We made a reservation for two at 6:30 on a Tuesday evening. We sat down and 2 minutes later we were already being pressured to order by the staff (I'm not exaggerating). We had to stop our conversation to browse the menu and before we made a decision, 2 more staff members came to ask for our order. At 7:30, we were asked to leave and we still had food on our plates. Ridiculous. the waiter said "there's people outside waiting for this table so your time is up"... wow. What is the point of making a reservation then? We had to swallow our food and left hungry. We were planning on ordering another round and maybe some dessert but clearly that was not an option. The service was so bad I only tipped 15% but I wish I hadn't tipped at all. Indifferent rolling for the salmon/tuna half rolls. seaweed not to the end, fish is off to a side (like a run of the mill take out joint), smaller hunks of fish in the roll and most oddly one piece that had salmon on one side and tuna on the other?! And price wise at $26 for the 10 piece nigiri and salmon/tuna half rolls its slightly more than kaide (it's closest counterpart in my mind) prices but without the kaide quality. read more

The sushi and sashimi is very tasty and fresh. This is the best thing about this restaurant. Everything else we had was bland and salty. We ordered a bento box ($26) and a nebayaki udon as well as some appetizers. The bento box was bland and totally overpriced for what it had. Trust me, don't order the bento boxes....not worth it. The udon was tiny and so salty.. hardly any soup in there. The oyako don was very bland... just some chicken with rice mixed in egg and soya sauce. If you do visit, order only sushi or sashimi. That is the good stuff. Service is meh... they forgot to bring us our miso soups as well as tea refills. A place I've seen plenty of times when I was riding the 99 bus, I never really thought about trying it out. More recently a friend suggested it and I decided to give it a try. It was a Saturday night around 6, and my friend was told it was a 30 minute wait for a table for 2. There was quite a few people waiting, and there was a pretty constant stream of people throughout the evening. We were seated at the sushi bar, which I actually enjoy. I like to watch them make the sushi and had the chance to see them sear the aburi sushi with a blow torch. My friend and I both ordered the deluxe sushi, which came with 10 pieces of nigiri and a tuna/salmon maki for $26. I think that was a pretty reasonable price. They do give you a daily sheet menu that shows which fish are available. I decided to get an aburi king salmon, aburi salmon belly, and aburi madai nigiri as well. These were all so good. They were seared just right, and had a melt in your mouth texture. It wasn't too oily and was flavourful. The aburi nigiri is definitely something to try here. As for the deluxe sushi, I enjoyed all of them except for one. It had a fishier taste and the texture was a lot smoother and different than what I was expecting. Other than that, the fish were fresh and good quality. I can see why this place gets busy. Overall, the sushi was really good. Some items may be a bit pricier, but the quality is there. Service started off not so great because it was hard to get someone to take our order, even after talking to 2 servers. But once we got our order in, they were attentive. They came around to refill our tea and asked how everything was. I definitely recommend trying out this place, but be prepared to wait during dinner time. read more

Our favourite neighborhood Japanese restaurant. Reservations highly recommended if you have more than 2 people - they always seem to be busy when we pop in. We've been lucky so far that we go right at 5pm and we usually get seated at the same corner table and can be in and out before the 6pm dinner rush. Customer service here was great. The decor inside is nice and clean, so was the washroom. The food was a bit mediocre, which was a bit disappointing. I has ordered the Box A, which was a box with chicken teriyaki, a California roll, 3 gyoza, a miso soup, and a salad.The rice was too soft, it was hard to use chopsticks to pick it up. The chicken teriyaki was not crispy at the top and so it was a bit chewy. The gyoza sauce was a bit too sour for my liking. I really enjoyed the ginger though, nice and thin. If I were to go back... Think I just found my new favourite sushi place in this hood! This place is a bit pricier than others but the quality is there. This sushi bar has a ton of options - ranging from blue fin tuna, assorted sashimi and oishi (aburi) sushi. The blue fin tuna ($6/piece - pricey but worth it). Assorted Sushi - House Special ($26) had a really good selection of assorted nigari (tuna, salmon, bbq eel and chopped scallop). The chef's roll was a tuna roll with mango and crunchy tempura. It was not loaded with sauce like a lot of other places tend to do. It was delicious and fresh. Lunch Special - Box C ($18) which includes tuna & salmon sashimi, gyoza, tempura, gommae (spinach salad) and miso soup. Everything was really good, wouldn't have changed a thing! While Temaki Sushi has been around since 2003, it really hasn't been on my radar until just recently (I suppose the overabundance of sushi restaurants in Vancouver is partly to blame). Nevertheless, we stopped by Temaki Sushi in late July for lunch and were pleasantly pleased with the food here. The Gomae ($5) and the Assorted Tempura ($14) were the first to arrive to the table. The cold spinach was wound up into a tight cone and was a bit difficult to unravel at first. Meanwhile, the tempura included 4 pieces of prawns and 3 pieces of veggies. The Agedashi Tofu ($6.50) is deep-fried and topped with green onions and bonito flakes while swimming in a light broth. The main event was the Chef's Sashimi ($48) which is the chef's selection of 30 various pieces of sashimi. During our visit, this included sockeye salmon, salmon toro, scallops, tuna gomae, halibut, mackerel, tako, hokkigai, kampachi (similar to hamachi), as well as ikura, and squid. The sashimi here is super fresh and well prepared. Loved the buttery softness of the salmon toro and the presentation of the sashimi was on point. They have a number of items on their fresh sheet so it's a great place to check out some sashimi that you don't normally find at your typical run-of-the-mill sushi joint in Vancouver. We returned a couple of months later to try their dinner service. This place gets pretty busy at night (both with walk-ins and with take-out orders). The thing that got to me was they weren't very efficient at handling the mix of walk-ins, phone calls, and service. We arrived just before 6pm for our reservation and, although our table (and many other tables) were open and ready, she said she'd seat us in a few minutes and then went to the next people in line who she planned to seat at the open bar seats but told them she'd seat them in 5-10 minutes, etc... and she kept going through the steadily growing line-up of patrons waiting to be seated. So by not simply seating the people waiting, the foyer kept getting crammed full of people as the hostess created a bottleneck. Guess she's never played Diner Dash before. In any case, after finally being seated at our table that was waiting for us, we decided on our dishes for this night. First up was one of the items under the Chef's Recommendations... the Snapper Tempura ($16). Breaking into the light and crisp tempura batter, the firm yet delicate white flakes of the snapper on the inside was piping hot. We were quite pleased with the sashimi on our last visit so we ordered the Chef's Sashimi ($48 for 30 pieces). The sashimi arrived in a large wooden bowl that had been chilled with ice underneath the sashimi. They do a good job with their fish here and the temperature is just right. Going clockwise from the top-left: wild salmon, tako (octopus), hokkaigai (surf clam), ika (squid), tuna gomae, Atlantic salmon, hamachi (yellowtail), ikura (salmon roe), hotate (scallop), and something which I think was some type of saba (mackerel). In the middle of the dish was the kanpachi (amberjack) which was really good and had a somewhat firmer texture but still excellent. Honestly, everything in this dish was really good. Next up was the Kaki Miso ($10) served with in the oyster shell with a creamy motoyaki sauce. And finally, the Crab Salad ($12) with real crab pieces, fresh mango, shiso leaves, cucumber, kaiware sprouts and a house ponzu dressing. I loved the big chunks of crab that they use in this dish. Overall, the prices are fair given the quality of the food that they serve here. read more

My friend recently celebrated a birthday and I offered to take her to any restaurant of her choosing, to honor the occasion. And she chose this restaurant, saying it was the best sushi in town. After dining here, I must say, she very well may be right. Despite its unassuming storefront on Broadway, this restaurant's interior is quite lovely inside, with a few private booths, and central bar area where one can sit and dine and watch the chefs in action. The place was super clean, and I liked how there was a "RESERVED" sign placed on our table (I had called in advance to make the reservation, as my friend advised me how busy this place gets at dinnertime. And she was right; the place was at full capacity when I arrived). The menu is quite extensive, and portions are large. The fish is super fresh. I was so happy to see that they offered "dinner specials" with various bento box meals, as I love these types of sampler platters, and all the other sushi restaurants I've been to only offer these types of meals at lunchtime. I ordered the "Sushi Tempura Box" for $20, and it included the California sushi roll, 3 piece of Nigiri (tuna, sockeye, ebi), 5 pieces of assorted tempura, chicken teriyaki over hot bean sprouts, salad, rice and miso soup. It was SO much food, I asked them to hold the salad and soup, and I STILL had 3/4 of the meal to take home with me. Everything was delicious and fresh. (As a sidenote, I liked how they packaged up my take-home foods. Some places do this sloppily, but here everything was wrapped up nicely and securely , and they even threw in a lidded container with the soy sauce, and the ginger and wasabi, and some chopsticks and napkins. And they packaged it up for me, and bagged it, too, as opposed to handing me the containers and bags and having me package it up myself. Nice!). Our server was great. Very attentive and always ensuring our tea and water cups were full, and we were happy with our meals. Note: there is ample metered parking here on Broadway, but there is free parking on the side streets for 1 or 2 hours, and unlimited free parking on the side streets after 6pm on weekdays. FYI. I parked on Yew with no problems or meters. Yeah me! This is a top-notch sushi place, in a city known for its sushi places. I will definitely be returning here. read more

One of my go to Japanese restaurants when I feel like eating good sashimi and nigiri. The restaurant offers omekase where you let them know how much you want to spend and they will customized a meal for you. I find this quite nice as you don't have to think about what to order and they will be able to portion size the dishes accordingly to the size of your party! I also suggest going in the beginning of the week. As I think they receive fresh fish on the Sunday/Monday. read more

Temaki was a bit underwhelming. I had the Chirashi Don and given that it was $25 I was expecting a decent bowl size with decent portions of fish. To my surprise, when the bowl arrived the fish portion was very small and thinly sliced. It only came with your basic fish like tuna and salmon and a couple of pieces of tomago. The fish tasted ok, but nothing to be excited about. The presentation is nice but just wanted a bit more substance to it. If you order rolls I guess that's ok, but if you order sashimi, then prepare to get small portions. The food was very average, likely will not return. read more

This is a great place for a more casual meal or date, for a family or large group. If you're looking for trendy chi-chi settings (which I eschew), this ain't it. As always, I'm chasing Marc D, my top recommended reviewer for Vancouver....who came here long ago. He calls it a "budget sushi bar" - which Vancouver has so many of - and he's right, but I like it even more than he does. This is a cleaner, brighter, higher end experience than most "budget sushi bars". If you have people in your party who don't like sushi or want hot dishes, Temaki has a nice variety. Their takoyaki is spot on. The variety & flavours of their donburi bowls are good. The omakase is delightful here. Better than many nicer spots in Seattle and literally almost half the price. Fish/sashimi was fresh!! Loved the rolls and i never order sushi rolls. Service was attentive, always came by to refill our tea as the cups are relatively small. Ramen - it was ok. Hands down the finest sushi I've ever had in my life. I had the Deluxe Sushi set for myself and it came out with tuna maki, salmon maki, and 10 pieces of assorted nigiri. As others have mentioned, the fish tasted very fresh and delicious. Even the sushi rice was perfectly seasoned and the wasabi was real so I was really impressed by that. With my guests I shared the Chef's Sashimi plate consisting of 30 pieces and it was just perfect. There's no other word to describe it. The sashimi pieces were generous and incredibly fresh. The chefs only pick the freshest, best tasting fish of the day so the quality is unbeatable. I'm glad we were able to check out this local spot in the kitsilano beach area, and it was convenient for us because it was on our way south from Granville island. Overall, I thought the food was myriads better than the service here--- but maybe I was biased because I m a tourist I was expecting better hospitality. It arrived to the table very without any noticeable wait and we both really enjoyed it. Fresh and tasty. I'd definitely come back. Had a quick look at the dinner menu and looked good to me. The Sashimi here is fantastic! The Assorted Sashimi (Chef's Selection) is 16 pieces for $25. The quality of the fish is noticeable, the care in the slicing of the fish is present and the plating design is pleasing to the eye. When it was served, there was no description of which creature had been served, but my (semi!) keen eye could pick out: Salmon & Tuna including Toro, Octopus, Prawn and Yellowfin...there was one more that I was totally unfamiliar with. This is my go to order here. As for other things on the menu: Rolls are not dissimilar from other quality Sushi Restaurants, the care in the roll and the proper rice technique are very welcomed though. The appetizers are standard, the Miso soup was a little bland but the Yakisoba was above average.
