The owner is super kind and the first time my husband went he offered the lemons for free since if they didn't sell they would still have to be tossed anyways. That's what grocery stores SHOULD do but the big shops would rather toss than loose a sale. Convenient location, pretty good selection of items. Been here a few times over the years but not a regular stop for me. Swung by this morning for a couple snacks to delay having to do a full grocery store shop. Turns out the hummus I bought had gone bad - reputable brand, not past expiry, but seems like it was not adequately temperature controlled, likely from storage in open cold produce area. Also bought crackers - as soon as I opened the bag I could tell they were rancid from the smell. Checked the box and they expired five months ago. Shouldn't be on shelves still, obviously. Tried to call to let them know, but the listed number doesn't work, just busy signal. So, not great, but just check to make sure the food you buy here hasn't gone bad before you purchase if possible. read more

David Chang was asked in an interview on The Hot Ones, how to support your local, mom 'n pop restaurants. His answer was to become a frequent flier at your top 4 to 5 places, get to know the owners and staff, and loyally go to them no matter what. It made me think of this market and how it really saved my sanity during lockdown by allowing me the luxury of not having to wait in mind-boggling long lines or have to wander through large crowds of people. It's family owned and run, conveniently located, with an unexpectedly large percentage of the available stock being organic, healthy-alternative, vegan, or eco-conscious, etc. With a Whole Foods opening up across the street, I have vowed to spend a minimum amount of money at this market at least once a week (and to not shop at the WF, but that's a different story ). I appreciate this place, I appreciate the folks that work here, and I both selfishly and altruistically want to see this place survive and thrive. Lastly, when you checkout you will see a big box of baklava. Believe me when I tell you, buy a square! This is quite the possibly the best baklava in existence. It is what you THINK baklava is supposed to taste like but rarely does. It's buttery, flakey, and luxurious. So good with a cup of hot black tea or coffee. I buy it as gifts sometimes, it's so good. Don't be fooled, that star is only there because it's the minimum mandatory star and the options here are somewhat appealing. (Minus the fact that they only sell Dasani and Voss water.) Just moved into the neighborhood and wanted to buy local, organic ingredients! This place happened to be magically close to where I lived! Not only that, but their variety of ingredients also range from European Butter, Louisiana hot sauce, to organic cilantro. Although the place looks small, they pack such a punch for what items they have. Their prices are incredibly reasonable, and right when you enter the store, they have a a $0.99 bag of too ripe produce to eat and buy right away! Definitely the place to go if you need a few items and don't want to wait in line at Safeway/ Trader Joe's for eggs and milk. They have all the basics, fresh produce, and high quality- brands. You're paying a buck or two more than what you'd normally spend at Safeway but for the convenience of it all + helping out a small business, this has become my go-to during the Carolli times when I need a few bananas so I can be like everyone else making banana bread these days. read more

Tea leaf salad that previously I had only been able to find at Burma Superstar (or other Burmese restaurants) for much much more expensive. This has changed my life. I love this place. I have been going more and more frequently because evening walks calm my kid down. It is a great stop for organic produce, treats and staples. They carry almost everything that I use in my kitchen! The staff is friendly. They also take WIC, which is how I get my kids formula. It is the first WIC store that I have been to that isn't just full of conventional foods. As they have grown, they have been able to add more foods like freshly baked breads. Keep it up, guys. i Absolutely Love this little Gem of a Grocery Store. Everything from the excellent customer Service to the Wonderfully packed wholesome food in stock. I worked at WFM for 4.5 years so when i entered TPM i was instantly impressed by the carefully picked selection and the health conscious brands on the shelves. The Produce selection is Awesome and you can tell they buy local. The Cherry on top is definitely the price. Everything is reasonably priced and some items even better priced then WFoods. Meaning that even for a small store, it has the intention of attracting long term customers and not hit and run shoppers. I've been to many small organic grocery stores in the past and what turns me away are usually is the high $$$. TPM is not one of those get rich off of the Term "Organic" stores. Temescal Produce Market is a sweet addition to the neighborhood. It's really cool because they deliver on the core concept, produce. The prices are low on the produce and the produce is nice! Meanwhile, despite it being small like a typical corner market, the other products are healthy and often organic selections. There's deli fridge, a few dry goods, a few snacks and sweets to chose from. The prices on everything else are just okay. Because there's parking and it's walking distance to everything else in the neighborhood, this little store is a big deal in the continuing evolution of Temescal in to Foodie Heaven. read more

It can seem unassuming from the outside, but trust that once you walk in - all of your yupster bodega dreams will come true. If you don't have time to run to Whole Foods or Berkeley Bowl, this family operated store has your local chard, chlorine-free diaper, organic kombucha & gluten free cake mix bases covered. Yeah, you will be paying a serious convenience fee to shop here - but people running the store are so friendly & they have such a good selection for such a little bodega, you won't be disappointed. This is such a great option - when I need some fresh veggies, tofu or almond milk - I'd rather go here than Safeway (or even Trader Joe's - always crowded with parents & children after work). They have everything you need to make delicious meals - and the prices are pretty competitive! They even have MimiCream ($5.99 right on par with Rainbow Grocery in SF), but it would be great to see Pacific Foods organic almond milk. I'll happily visit Temescal Produce Market again! read more

I'm very lucky to have this market nearby. The produce is fresh and reasonably priced. It's a little more than Berkeley Bowl, but that's to be expected from a smaller establishment. Most importantly to me, it's open late, unlike the Rockridge Market Hall produce center. The owners / staff seem like nice people. I've been taking a just-in-time approach to grocery shopping, getting food for the next few days instead of week. So far, I seem to be wasting less food, and running out of ingredients less often. This would be untenable if I only had Trader Joe's, or supermarket-type establishments like Whole Foods or Safeway. Yay for small grocery stores. read more

Gluten-free review: Good selection for un petite store. They've got the Udi's and the Amy's in the freezer and have a revolving selection of gluten-free cookies. Decent selection and quality stuff. Just a shame about the credit card minimum. Raise the prices a nickel, charge a convenience fee or find a better processor. Makes it hard to pop in and out for that one quick thing I wanted, which is usually what small stores are good for! I don't carry a lot of cash for convenience and safety reasons, so coming here depending on what I want is like playing the lottery: will my method of payment work this time? Let's roll the dice and find out! Card processing fees are annoying for merchants, but ATM fees are onerous for consumers. Hopefully this mom and pop shop will join the 21st century and find a way to let people pay electronically for small items soon. Lots of innovative payment platforms out there to keep costs down for merchants and help them win business they would have lost out on otherwise. read more

If I can wait, I'll get my produce from Piedmont Grocery (TPM's produce isn't always the most fresh looking, but I'd imagine it's because they cannot anticipate demand very well... "Hm, I wonder if today we'll sell 3 yellow bell peppers, or 4?" so I can't blame them, but...) Anyway, happy it's here and it's wonderful. It's small but well stocked, and I've never come in on emergency last-minute need and not been able to find exactly what I was looking for. Produce is fresh, and many local/organic products. An awesome, friendly market with great prices on produce and, considering the small size of the store, a huge variety of other foods. Organic food, vegan food, ice cream in a million flavors, whatever you want. And if they don't have it, really, they will make every effort to get it for you. I was missing the so very convenient single-serve size haas avocados from the market near my old house, so I said something, and now they carry them! I walk there every other day or more, so I hardly ever have to drive to other grocery stores! read more

Can't help but echo the other reviewers. TPM is a delight, from friendly staff to convenient hours to the first California-grown organic apricots of the season. I mean it about the friendly staff thing: even when it's 8:45 pm and I'm taking waaaay too long to decide between almond or hazelnut milk, they've always been nice. Now that I know they're there, I rely on them and fret that they might someday close. Someone mentioned the absence of meat: for me, that's a plus. Better for the environment too. Sweet little market to fill in gaps in between larger grocery trips with lots of hippie/fancy food that I like: Alter Eco chocolate, Casa Sanchez chips/salsa, Talenti, Fage yogurt, spices from Spicely, Clover milks, Aunt Mary's chicken, eco friendly cleaning products, etc. And yes, there is plenty of produce, all lovely. There is a markup, but when your other option is picking up a can of Chef Boyardee and Easy Mac at the Walgreen's across the street, it doesn't seem so bad. The guys who run the store are sweet. This little place rocks! Ok, it is tiny. But compared to the options in the neighborhood it might as well be Costco it has so much to offer. Customer service is great and that is high priority for me. They will special order things for you and they have hopes to expand and carry more products. The produce I've gotten was fresh and good. Additionally the guy behind the counter recommended a new brand of orange (a blood orange, not sure who makes it but it was good!) and will go out of his way to help you out in whatever way he can. They will listen to suggestions for what to carry - in fact they even have a suggestion list - and generally seem like good neighbors. My neighborhood is blossoming with awesomeness, and Temescal Produce Market is a very good example of this. The existing little markets are lovely and fill certain needs we all have, but I feel like Temescal Produce Market is the quintessential corner store for anyone trying to maintain an ecologically responsible lifestyle. It's like all those other little shops you've been making quick stops at for your entire life, only everything is guaranteed to be organic! They have dairy-free, gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan products, and they have a pretty healthy selection of very popular brands. Their selection of fresh produce and whole-food-type ingredients is a bit less than what I would want, but there's only so much you can squish into that little space, and they've done an excellent job! Keeping up with the "corner store" ambiance, whole ingredients is not so much what it's about as foods that are convenient (noodle bowls, mac'n'cheese, peanut butter, tea, bread, chips, salsas, cookies, milk, ice cream, tofu) - it's just that the corner store experience has been distilled into its finest and purest form. An aside: their organic bananas are AWESOME. I have some hanging in my kitchen just now. I just gazed upon them lovingly. Just so you know. Going back to that idea of "corner store +1," the place is clean and cheerful. It's heavily stocked with goodies, but didn't really give me the impression of clutter at all. They're still setting up so every time I go in, there's something new. They also have a board out front on which they'll take requests, and they're soon going to have a nice little bulk-ingredient setup. The man running the store is pretty fantastic, and I suspect he's behind all the other fantasticness I've mentioned as well. He's super friendly and accommodating, and I truly get the impression that he wants nothing more than to give people the best products, service, and experience that he can. I really look forward to seeing what's coming next. And then buying it. And eating it. Perhaps after cooking it. You get the idea. Specially thier prices is reasnable.
