Been here once before when my dog was having back issues and they helped me tremendously. The doctor I seen on that day was very well educated, did a great job informing my and my wife on the issue and prescribed us the right meds for her and she did get better. I thought I would make this my go to Vet moving forward. Well that's where I made a mistake. My very same dog had eye styes and I seen 3 different vets who all gave me different diagnosis, all different meds, so every time I went back it was receiving conflicting information! Yesterday I went back for the 3rd time and was given anti biotics, hours later my dogs Stey burst on its own and started bleeding, naturally I cared for it and immediately called back for help. They informed me that she needed surgery and they couldn't do it today. I proceeded to tell them why couldn't the vets ever tell me this could be something that I should maybe anticipate, and the "nurse" told me it's not normal for it to happen. I called 2 Emergency vets and they both said that it's very likely this can happen when they styes don't reduce in pets and humans and that surgery isn't necessary. My biggest problem here is that all 3 vets never warned me that this could potentially be a problem, instead they just kept wanting me to go back and give me different meds every time. I feel very bad for leaving this review because my first experience was stellar, and I wish I would have continued to see that very vet. But unfortunately for me and my dog, we had to see multiple vets who didn't really seem to inform me on the severity of my dogs situation. I can honestly say that I will not be back and neither would I recommend anyone to go. read more

This is by far the worst vet clinic I have ever been to. Last month, I brought in my 15 year old Pomeranian/Dachshund mix because his eye was swollen shut. He has terrible anxiety as well as being deaf and blind. He also got all of his teeth removed a few years ago so his mouth area is extremely sensitive. After waiting for about 30 minutes, the veterinary technician came in and attempted to take his temperature. She missed a few times and was clearly inexperienced and unsure of herself, causing him to become anxious. She asked me about his eye and questioned why I thought there was a problem and if he was scratching it or not. He had been pawing at it, and clearly there's an issue when he can't even open it and there's discharge coming out of it? She left and I waited for 20 minutes or so. The doctor came in with his assistant and he seemed to be handling my dog okay, but I started to get concerned when he was roughly prying his eye open. He took him to the back to do an eye stain and about 15 minutes later his assistant invited me to the back room. I was in absolute horror to walk back there and see my dog with a muzzle around his mouth and the doctor repeatedly opening his eye. My dog was EXTREMELY distressed and in pain, not only from his eye being forced open but the muzzle around his sensitive mouth. He was growling, crying, and whining, and I have never, ever seen him make those noises. He's a very sweet dog and is usually handled very well by veterinarians, so growling is definitely out of character for him. The doctor was trying to show me what was wrong with his eye and he kept opening his eye over and over again, stressing him out even more. He even admitted that he was stressed out and kept unnecessarily trying to show me what was wrong even though I saw it the first time. Any veterinarian would be able to recognize my dogs anxiety and shy away from stressing him out even more. But nope, Dr. Wells continued to roughly handle my dog until he was left shaking. I went back to the room and they didn't even give me an estimate or a run down of what medications he will need. I waited for about an hour before the vet assistant came in asking me what kind of medication I would prefer, liquid or capsules. I said capsules because my dog refuses to take medicine if he can smell it so it's easy to hide capsules in his food and I don't want to stress him out by injecting liquid into his mouth. She leaves the room and brings me two different types of eye drops, two capsule medications, and one liquid. I asked her if I can have the capsule version instead because as I JUST stated, he will not take the liquid and I don't want to stress him out. She leaves the room and comes back in and tells me that the liquid version is better because I don't have to give it to him twice a day like the capsule. I told her I didn't care how many times I had to give it to him, and that I would prefer the capsule. I later found out that the capsule only needs to be given once a day, not twice, so what was the purpose of pushing the liquid on me?? She finally got me the correct medication and helped me give him his first dose of eye drops. Just like the technician, she seemed very inexperienced and fumbled around with my dogs head, missing his eye completely. I don't understand why you would ask me what medication I prefer if you're not even going to listen, causing me to tell you three separate times what I need? I did not appreciate them not giving me a price breakdown or estimate and not fully explaining what each medication will do. In total, I spent around 2 1/2 to 3 hours there and left feeling regretful that I ever gave this place my business. Needless to say, I will not be returning. read more

I take my babies there for shots and check up's, but today I took my Pugsley in for a dental, they kept me posted and didn't mind me calling multiple times to check on him....I Strongly recommend taking your babies there to see DR. Rick Wells, he is patient, understanding and treats not only his patients fantastic...he also is very understanding with neurotic mom's. Go see DR. I do Not recommend this place. We brought in my very sick rescued kitten . They said he was fine. They really take much time or trouble to find out what was wrong. They were happy to take my money though. A few hours later We had to take the kitten to an emergency vet clinic. They said he was in bad shape and severely dehydrated. They took the time to find out what was wrong. I called the Tempe vet clinic a few days later and asked for my money back because they didn't do anything to help our sick kitten . The vet was hateful and refused . We ended up spending a fortune at the emergency vet clinic because the Tempe vet clinic didn't give the sick kitten the care that he needed. The kitten would have died if he didn't get the fluids and anti nassau medications. If you love your pet DON'T go here . read more

I want to actually give this place negative stars, but in order to post I had to choose a star value. I made an appointment for a feline declaw and when scheduling was just told drop off time and to not give my pet food after 10pm. I was never informed of the person who would be doing the procedure. During drop off I was asked to sign paperwork and accept the procedure and add additional fluids etc... I was also asked to call around 3pm that day and check in on how the surgery went. When I did call to check up I was stunned at how Shannon treated me on the phone. The worst customer service I ever experienced. She never asked me my name or my pets information and quickly said "he is fine you can pick him up tomorrow at 12pm". I could not believe that was her answer when she never asked me my name or my pets name so how did she know how the surgery went?? When I told her that she had the same answer and told me she was in the surgery room with the animal and I could pick him up tomorrow. Again, my cat is a she and there was no additional information given to me. I could not believe they didn't say more. I was expecting them to tell me when surgery ended or when she was scheduled to come out of anesthesia and get her medicine. Nothing. Saturday upon pick up I got to meet Shannon who was rude and unprofessional in person just like she was on the phone. I asked to speak with a manager and they were not there. I asked for them to call me when they got to work and still have not received a call. I also asked to speak with the vet on staff that day and was told they could not talk to me. Shannon explained rudely that most customers do not want more information given to them over the phone when they call for check up. I cannot believe that and I would expect that for the customers that do want more information they should get it. I get more information when I call my mechanic and check up on my car than I did from this place who is caring for a living, breathing pet. I was so upset I asked for complete medical records of my pets stay and they could not provide me with that information. They told me they do not keep normal anesthesia records. Therefore, God forbid, a pet passes away at the facility they cannot prove or provide records to ensure they did everything they needed to to ensure the safety of the animal. Upon seeing my cat she was covered in urine and they returned her to me that way and did not even offer to clean her up. I also arrived with a sheet inside her travel case and one over top that was also not returned to me. When I asked for it they said it was in the wash and they provided me with a blanket to cover her with. I will never ever go back to this location and I will make sure to tell everyone I know that has an animal not to use this veterinary hospital. Ive experienced much better I recently switched vets due to a move and found Tempe Vet was close to my house and had decent reviews. In about a 2 month time span I have taken four dogs to Tempe Vet and probably spent about $500+ there. My first two experiences were good, the wait was tolerable and the Dr's covering for Dr. wells were exceptional! However, I had two appointments - with Dr wells- this past week for two of my dogs. The wait each time was over one hour and fifteen minutes; I spent nearly two hours there each visit: one visit was a wellness check on a dog I adopted and the other was a follow up for my dog's allergies! The second visit, I didn't leave the office until 7pm and I had to be somewhere at 7 pm. And the bill was 280.00! No break down of what I was getting / cost prior to checking out they just loaded me up with meds. Check out took about 15 minutes because I was asking questions about what I was purchasing. I asked for the exam fee to be comped the lady ask why and I said because my appt was 2 hours ago AND because I came out of the room after an hour of waiting (at 6 pm) and said I will come in first time tomorrow morning then Dr well said he would be in my room in about 5-10 minutes- he was- but I still ended up staying there another hour. At check out-again- i offered to come back in the morning to get the meds because by this time I was frustrated and check out process was a mess which caused the 15 minute check out. The front desk lady said she would not comp the exam fee because he was prescribing meds to the dog I brought in two days prior for her cough. I recommended to her that the office begin the practice letting patients know if the Dr is running behind to show that they have respect for people's time. She didn't seem understanding nor did I get an apology for the two hour office visit. This experience could have been avoided if I was inform, when I checked in, that he was over an hour behind - then I could have made the decision to wait or reschedule and I would have simply reschedule for the following day. I may take my dog in for her follow up appt- only because I do not want to switch dr 's mid treatment (ill just show up an hour and a half late and be there on time) and after that my three girls will not be back to Tempe Vet. I cannot speak how good the dr is because both times he was rushed and that gave me the impression he was just going through the motions to get to the next appt (they probably did not get out until after 8pm). Unless you have hours to spare at the vet I would not recommend this place. I understand there are emergencies but I'm sure patients would appreciate a heads up at check in if there is a tremendous wait; that would have made all the difference- both times I went. read more

There are multiple vets here (at least 3 that I've seen). Dr. Wells is amazing, and I would still take my dogs here if he was the only vet. His explanations are easy to understand, he tells you your options, including what is best for your pet and your wallet, and he doesn't forget about you once you're in the exam room (if there's a delay he'll send a tech to let you know). Unfortunately I can't say the same for the other two vets. They usually get you into an exam room quickly, but from then, it can take 20 minutes before you see anyone else. Once it took 45 minutes for a rabies vaccination. The last time I went, a vet was gossiping with one of the receptionists about how they were referring clients somewhere and that other location should be grateful. It took almost 15 minutes for me to get into an exam room (no one else was waiting; two exam doors were open and empty). When the vet came in to see me, she apologized for being late and said there had been a "cat emergency." While this may have been true earlier in the day, it certainly was not the reason she was late since I had seen and heard her conversation with the receptionist. read more

Dr Wells takes fantastic care of my pups. I've vet shopped quite a lot and this is the only place that i haven't gotten the greedy vibe from. They take their time explaining everything and will tell you the truth about what is necessary and what isnt without pushing expensive needless junk on you. i ask a ton of questions and i've seen dr's with that annoyed look more times than I can count but tempe vet answers everything and sometimes even goes into more detail than even i was planning. The exam fee is below average from what i've found and the new building - just around the corner from the old one -is a lot more modern and much much bigger. read more

We had Dr. Pifer yesterday for a quick exam for my dog to get caught up on his shot. Front desk staff was very kind and got me in right away. The only thing I didn't like about this place was the fact they take the dog in the back for temperature. I don't understand why they can't do everything in the room with the owner. The doctor was super informative and took the time to answer my questions. A lot of times vets seem rushed, but he didn't at all. Very pleased and will come back again. I like tempe vet a lot. I've been there a dozen times between a sick cat and old dog. The only reason they don't get 5 stars from me is that I've never been there and not waited 20 minutes to see the doctor. The only thing that is saving this review from being a zero is the price of the services. This place has the absolute worst front office staff. I have never encountered a more disorganized office where messages are not taken or delivered and I have to call there multiple times for any information. I am not sure they even have a computer to keep the schedules in as I recall our appointment being written down in a planner! My dog is my child and I am so careful with where I go to get her any medical treatment. This place made me question the entire procedure because how can someone manage surgery on a dog when they cannot even manage their front office staff???? For a split second I was actually concerned that my dog would not make it out of this whole thing alive. That is a HORRIBLE thought to have. Please, spend a little extra money and go somewhere where the staff is competent. The discounted rate is not worth the pain and agony of dealing with the staff. read more

I took my dog to this place today for a cough and viral fever. Dr. Wells was very nice and he explained a lot of things to me. He seemed experienced and skilled. The place is affordable it was easy to get an appointment. Only con I found was that the waiting time there was close to an hour but that might have been because it was my first time visiting there and the paperwork took some time too. If you want to go to a VET where you feel like you are going in to a department store and up-charged then this is the place for you. Had all of my dogs check ups in LA but just needed to get bordetella for my dog some can do some day camp for her. Made a reservation since it was close to the our shop, went in just for that so we had to pay for visit and the vaccine. Not an issue, we waited 1 hour as he tried to sell us everything under the sun. As my dog was sitting there shaking on the Vet table he kept trying to scare us in to buying product, other Vaccines, Heart warm meds bla bla. The place looks super trashy which I don't mind, since I have a had great vets in the past in not the best looking locations, but this place was expensive too. Just a word of advise for people that just want to get something quick, this place is not about the Animals, they are a place of business. So choose wisely. I will never trust this place with anything, if the Doctor is willing to go for one hour trying to sell me what I know I don't need I wonder what they will charge me If god forbid something happened to our dogs. read more

If I could give negative stars I would. My dachshund went in for tumor removal. The initial bill was $1150, upon picking her up it was $1789, the Dr called while she was being worked on and asked if he could remove 2 warts, I said if course ( 2 warts were never removed, there is one on her shoulder, and one on her left calf muscle ), ALL OF THE ORIGINAL TUMORS WERE REMOVED, and all were presented on the original bill. I get back to the clinic, and my 15 pound Dixie looked like she got ripped apart by a Doberman, she even had to be restapled ( went to VCA in Mesa, AMAZING facility, and they took care of my dog like she was a person, ) UNLIKE Tempe Veterinary Hospital. I was worried about my dog having IVDD, her back was in spasm every day from the day of surgery til the last staples were removed. I called Tempe Veterinary Hospital SEVERAL TIMES, the doctor responded ONCE, 2 days after the surgery and said it was just the sutures making her back spasm and to keep medicating her and she'd be fine. He then neglected to return a single phone call for the next 10 days. Every day, my dog got worse and worse with her spasms, & he neglected her like a piece of meat. Thank GOD for VCA & ANIC who took care of my Doxie in the end, getting the sutures out, restapling the ones that were bad, and finally making my dog happy again after a HORRIFIC experience at TEMPE VETERINARY HOSPITAL! The Dr wouldn't even fix the bill from the original $1150 then charged $1789 to the credit card. Shame on DR.RICK WELLS. The staff is great, but for the doctor to neglect phone calls after such a traumatic surgery, and to bill my mother an extra $639, because he said he needed to remove 2 warts that he never removed is incomprehensible!! I have both bills, itemized, and they care more about money than the animal, or the owner. DONT TAKE THE RISK, GO SOMEWHERE LIKE VCA - it's not worth it to go to a place that ares more about money than the animal. read more

I used Tempe veterinary hospital as my go-to vet for years. Not only do I have 4 dogs and one cat of my own, but I also foster animals regularly and always brought my fosters to this vet. Every single time I have an appointment, I waited for at least 20 to 30 minutes before I was seen by a vet. Usually, however, it was closer to 45 minutes to an hour. I never minded though, because they were always willing to work with me by giving me Sub-Q fluids to take home, prescribing medicine for feral cats without seeing them, etc. A few months ago, one of my foster cats was acting sick. I took him in the Tempe veterinary hospital, they prescribed some medication, and I took him home. I forgot a week I had not seen any improvement so I brought him back. This time they kept him for the whole day for observation and sent him home with more medication. Again after about a week, I hadn't seen any improvement, so I brought him back for a third time. again, they kept him for the whole day for observation. When I got him back, he seemed extremely lethargic and out of it. After about 24 hours, I knew something wasn't right with him, so I took him to a different vet. Turns out, he had a broken back. The vet at Tempe Veterinary Hospital either broke his back themselves, or failed to realize his back was broken (I had trapped this cat in a trailer park so it is possible he had broken it there). Either way, they failed to notice that his back was broken, so this cat suffered in excruciating pain for the last few weeks of his life before he had to be put down due to his injuries. I will NEVER trust Tempe Veterinary Hospital again with any of my animals after this incident and I suggest that everyone does the same. read more

Was looking for a Vet for my 13 yr old cat...found good reviews of Dr. Wells from TVH. Good thing I read the reviews because when you get to TVH, its not much to look at, but don't let that change your mind. Dr. Wells is incredible, You can tell he has a passion for what he does. The place is always busy, he donates his time an services to Spaying and Neutering pets for free. My cat had 3 teeth pulled and the Dr. spent a great deal of time with me explaining thi issues, my options and costs, both before and after surgery.\. My Cat is doing great! Dr. Wells is top notch, don't let the Cover of the book turn you away, You pet will receive the greatest care from a Vet who loves what he does and has genuine concern for your specific pet. read more

I took my puppy, who was rescued with 4 others in a box along the freeway by a friend, in for shots. I was a walk in with a 4lb Chiweenie. They were all so nice and the Dr took his time to examine the little guy. He told me he was about 6 weeks old and couldn't have been more interested and informative regarding my new pet. read more

Not impressed. Rescued a kitty, and brought him in. They suggested I neuter and do vaccines and all the stuff we should do with the cats, so that was okay. The first visit cost $300 for neutering, two nights boarding, disease testing, and vaccines. I brought him in for the second visit which included boosters, and I needed to board him for a few nights. When I picked him up it was another $220, which is okay because animals are worth it however...the never used before, brand-new cat carrier I tried to transport my pet in (he would not get in)...when I got him back he was in it and there is vomit all over it and some sort of food, and I am pretty sure he was not well taken care of. After I dropped him off, they called me while I was already down the road out of town to my destination, and said "oh we're not open on Sundays." I said who takes care of the animals then? They said someone comes in once a day to take care of them. Well, my cat is Fed twice a day, as discussed at drop off. Didn't tell me this before i left in there. not to mention they charged me another $38 for an "exam" when he just had one three weeks ago. They would not waive this. I am 95% sure, my cat sat in his own carrier for four days without any interaction considering what I found in the carrier when I opened it. I will never go back there again, and I don't think they have the staff nor hours to care for our animals. They said animals get 15 minutes of human interactive day, which isn't even close to enough, I don't even think that was meant. But that's just my opinion after getting my cat back and seeing how disturbed he was. Finally, one of the boosters he needed, did not get done and as my cat is there freaking out because I'm finally there to pick him up and he's getting out of this hellhole, they said oh we missed one...should we take them back and do it? My first and LAST experience with Tempe Veterinary Hospital was a complete NIGHTMARE. I wish I could give them negative stars, but I had to put at least one to review them. Their lack of care for their customers and the well-being of animals is absolutely shocking considering they call themselves a 'veterinary hospital.' They do not deserve anyone's business. Please read on for my experience. I am a junior at ASU. On my way to class one morning, I found a kitten struggling in the middle of the road on University. It had been hit by a car and was clearly in pain but very much alive. I immediately pulled my car to the side and ran out and grabbed the injured kitten. She was very scared. In a panic, I called the closest vet I could find so the kitten would not suffer any longer than she had to. Unfortunately, that happened to be Tempe Veterinary Hospital. I called and explained my situation... stray kitten, hit by a car, in pain, back legs not moving... and they told me to bring her in. They took her right in no questions asked and evaluated her as I anxiously waited in the waiting area. Finally the lady who had helped me at the front desk came out and said the prognosis was not good. The vet thought she had likely broken her spine and her two back legs would never work again. I asked if there was any chance the kitten could recover from this and live a happy, comfortable life and she said the chance was not good. As much as I wanted this poor kitten to live and give her all the love she deserved, I knew it would be cruel and unfair to keep her alive when her quality of life would be so poor. I made the tough decision to euthanize her and put her out of her misery. Being a devout animal lover, I immediately broke down in tears and began sobbing. I was completely devastated. I picked up my stuff from the waiting room and went to my car to leave. While I'm in my car trying to call my mom and tell her what had just happened, one of the nurses at the front desk comes running out the door. She had chased me down to tell me that I had to pay for the euthanasia. With tears pouring down my face, I go back inside where they proceed to tell me that I have to pay for the physical exam as well! I asked them if there was a place that offers euthanasia for free since it felt strange that I had to pay for it and she said I could take the kitten to the Humane Society. Keep in mind that I am in Tempe on Mill and Southern. It would take a long time to get to the nearest Humane Society during which the kitten would be suffering. I did not feel this was fair to the kitten and decided that paying $130 out of my own pocket would be worth ending her suffering. After I had some time to calm down and think more clearly, I realized how awful I had been treated through this incident. This vet had taken advantage of a distraught young woman who had rushed a stray kitten here because she didn't want her to suffer - no 'thank you', no 'you did the right thing', just a swipe of my credit card and off I went. They had the gall to charge ME for not only her euthanasia but also her three-minute physical exam. What would they have done if I refused to pay for an animal that was not mine? Upon entering the office, they did not tell me I would be charged for a physical exam. Am I suppose to just assume I have to pay for any animal I take in there, even if it is a stray animal that is suffering? I had always thought of veterinary hospitals as being a safe haven for animals and animal-lovers... how naïve of me. In my anger and confusion, I called their office demanding answers. Why did I have to pay for an animal that was not mine? What if I wasn't financially capable of paying for the kitten's euthanasia? What would they do then? Throw the kitten back out on the street to die a slow death? I asked the lady on the phone what I should have done - just left the kitten to die on the road? To my surprise, she told me YES I should have, and then started to retract her statement realizing what she had said. These people call themselves a veterinary hospital but they couldn't care LESS about the welfare of animals unless someone is there to pay for it. What angered me most was not the money I had to spend to end that poor kitten's suffering, but the way I was taken advantage of and treated by a place that is suppose to care about ALL animals, not just those that have an owner to pay for them. read more

Very happy with Tempe Veterinary Hospital. The staff is caring and courteous, and Dr Wells is great! He took a lot of time to clearly explain things to us and make sure we understood, even he was even willing to provide recommendations for a second opinion if we wanted. His manner is such that it puts both owners and pets at ease. Thank you Dr Wells and staff for all your help with our Smokey and your compassion and caring when a merciful end was the only option. read more

Horrible experience!!! My dog was not given proper care, allowed to sit in his urine and fecis for who knows how long. His white paws were stained yellow from his urine. They recommended to drug my dog because he is hyper versus exercising him. He was placed in a kennel too small because he's agile and can climb their seven foot open kennel. His food and water bowls were left in the kennel and were spilled over. When I brought him home he was extremely thirsty. I had to bathe him as well. He only was in the kennel for five days. The staff was rude on pick up and treated my girlfriend badly. So badly the Dr. called later on in the evening to apologize for her behavior. They offer the cheapest prices around but I do not recommend this business. It is true that you get what you pay for. read more

We absolutely LOVE this bar ... I mean this Vet. :) The front desk does get a bit overwhelmed at times, however, they always have made us feel like our dogs were the absolutely the most important there. Shortly after our Calvin was adopted he contracted something called, Red Mange ... something horrible he evidently got this from his mother. For six weeks, he had to get treatments ... and was very very sick. The kind staff gave me options to save money, and to do some of the treatments at home. It was a long scary time ... he survived, and is thriving. I recommend this vet and the office to anyone who is looking for a great down to earth team ... who are fully human, but willing to love who they treat fully. read more

My daughter just had to have her cat put to sleep. Dr. Gammill was defensive, argumentative, rude, unprofessional, and completely unhelpful with the difficult decision that had to be made. When I tried to explain our situation with her being a college student with limited resources and that I was taking the cat for the weekend, he interrupted me to tell me he didn't need to hear my whole life story. Afterwards, the front office staff said to make sure we got rid of her bedding as she might have been contagious. Had the Dr. taken the time to hear my "life story" he might have mentioned the contagious factor as I told him I was bringing her into my house with my dog and two other cats. On one hand he says he's throwing a Hail Mary and then on the other said that the cat was not in pain, but just sick. He wouldn't even tell my daughter that she was making the right decision after the cat almost died on the table during the examination.
