I haven't had Ten Ren bubble tea in over 15 years. I kept telling my kids and wife this was the OG spot. The first place I had bubble tea back in the early 2000s. Staff were very friendly and kind. The drinks were delicious and had that nostalgic taste. The store is beautiful with the fragrance of ginger and ginseng. After getting bubble tea all over the DMV and having HeyTea across the shopping center. Ten Ren is a solid choice for bubble tea and I will be back more often. read more

I made an impromptu visit to Ten Rens, and I was pleasantly surprised at all the teas that were inside as well as how helpful all the employees were. Dabbling in our tea journey we didn't really know where to begin, but the employees were super helpful and determining what tea might be suitable for us they have a great assortment of teabags as well as tea leaves, or a mix of both for beginner tea drinkers. They also have bubble tea for sale, which was very exciting and definitely hit the spot! One of the employees made a custom drink that is her specialty and it was absolutely delicious! Ten Ren is THE OG bubble tea place in Rockville and where I had my very first bubble tea drink back in 2001. The flavor I ordered was honeydew and probably the most popular one amongst myself and friends. After so many years, I really missed my honeydew drink, so I stopped by to order it and it brought back all the nostalgia. Not just the drink, but the friendly service here is top notch like the quality of their teas. I also bought some chrysanthemum tea and have been drinking it every day. Today I ordered 4 drinks (lychee citrus) and I totally forgot what the drink was called at first (long day at work haha). Anyway, while I was trying to guess the drink, the 2 workers who are the same workers when I go in were laughing at me. I kept giving the workers ideas of what the drink might be and they kept saying I was wrong and were rolling their eyes until I had to call my husband to remind me what drink i normally order. Also, the way I pronounce "lychee" is different from how people pronounce "lychee" here in the mainland. They also kept rudely correcting me about how I should pronounce it. Wow. This place has a very extensive selection of teas. Me like. If you're a tea lover, I'm sure you'd be in heaven here. At different price points, I'm sure you can find something that you'd like. But alas, I came here for the bubble tea. I like how they offer a variety of drinks to choose from (bubble tea, milkshakes, smooties, etc.). I decided to take a chance and get a large taro milkshake ($5). I opted to add boba instead of the aloe. I've never ordered a boba milkshake before, so I thought I'd give it a try. For some reason I was expecting a thicker drink that actually resembled a milkshake. What I got was similar in consistancy to your usualy bubble tea, just with milk instead of the tea. It was good, but somewhat watered down and the taro flavor didn't through as much. The tapioca balls were cooked nicely. Not too mushy or hard. I liked my drink, but not sure if I'd get it again. Many people after me ordered the honeydew milkshake, so I'll probably give that try next time. Staff was friendly, although interaction was very minimal. $5 minimum is using your credit card (no Amex accepted here...boo!). read more

One of the few places in the DMV to get high quality imported fine teas from China, Taiwan and HK. They have high grade ginseng. They do tea sampling and ceremonies. I have never written a review of an establishment before even though I have had some negative business experiences none have motivated me to download yelp to warn other future customers like this. I ordered a starfruit bubble tea today and tasted it and it tasted nothing like the taste of starfruit. I am never a picky person and would be happy to drink a flavor I'm not fond of if I ordered it but this was absolutely undrinkable. I took it back in and asked if they could change it or if it was perhaps incorrectly made maybe the wrong flavor since it tasted more similar to their "smoked plum" flavor than starfruit. They told me I would know if it was smoked plum because it should taste almost like BBQ- why someone would want a BBQ tasting bubble tea I have no idea- and that starfruit should taste like a salty plum (i have tried starfruit itself several times and it does not). A woman across the shop (not the one who made the drink) proceeded to yell at me across other customers as I was speaking to the other women. I stepped back and waited for all the customers to be served and leave before reproaching the situation so that she didn't make a scene to others. I asked if it was possible to switch the flavor or be refunded and purchase another since I wasn't able to drink it. She told me no one would do that with a raised voice yelling at me even though I was right in front of her speaking calmly and softly. I had to ask her to stop yelling say that I was not and to please stop berating me. It was a horrible horrible experience I have no comparison to. She ended up adding black tea to the top and it was less strong but the same flavor. I hope no one else has to experience this!! I still had to end up throwing out the great majority of it after trying to force myself to get my money's worth by sipping a few times but just ended up feeling a bit nauseous and couldn't. read more

I really wanted to love this place. I'd researched it online and was excited to try it. I should note that I'm not a boba tea drinker, though that sounds like their specialty - I was just interested in traditional teas, with nothing added. One high point I will note was that they had very cool, elaborate teaware, worthy of a museum. It was fun just to be able to wander the shop and look at all the ornate, intricate kettles and cups. There was also a tea room at the back with lacquered chairs (see pictures). Although it wasn't available to use, it was a nice added touch. With that said, though, I was disappointed by the tea itself. Some previous reviewers have noted that there are some communication challenges due to the language barrier, and I would agree with that. The sales people were friendly and helpful, but we had a bit of difficulty sharing information. I ordered a straight green tea, and they asked me repeatedly about adding various sweeteners like honey or sugar. I did specify each time that I wanted plain green tea. When I got it, it was really hot, which surprised me, since green tea is usually prepared with water just below boiling temperature. After waiting for it to cool, I had a couple of sips, and it tasted really strange, definitely unlike any green tea I'd had before. I tried to drink it, but couldn't and ended up pouring it out, which I've never done with tea before. We had also purchased some loose leaf tea separately to try at home, but alas, it was no better. I noticed there were a lot of stems and the tea seemed a bit weak, in addition to the flavor seeming off. Perhaps this is because they usually serve boba tea, so the flavor of the tea itself usually gets drowned out in a medley of sugar and other ingredients. Came here today a little bit before 8 PM, the owner joy was nice enough to take our order saying "we close but I'll take your order" but continue to rush us. We ordered. I took the wrong turn on my way to Jumbo Jumbo and ended up at Ten Ren. The bubble tea gods threw me a curve ball so that I could find one of the best tea places in the area. When you walk in, the large canisters of tea reveal that this place means serious business when it comes to tea. The lady there was very helpful with finding the perfect Jasmine tea. I suffered from sticker shock when I saw that one of the very small canisters that she recommended was $75....whoa, holy tea leaves! She offered the same type of tea, sold loose by weight. She suggested 2 ounces so that we could try it at home. The star of this shop is the bubble tea. Both the green milk tea and coffee milk with boba were the absolute best that I've ever had in the area. This is not the time to be modest...why did I only get a small?? The boba was fresh with a great chew. The green milk tea was cool and fragrant. Neither of the flavors were too sweet. Ten Ren's green tea and black tea drinks are TEA-focused, and not milky/powdery/overly sweet-focused. Their drinks actually taste like the actual tea (it's a tea drink, remember?) and the sweetness from the flavor of your choosing. Essential ingredients include boba of the perfect chew. when you are asian and you were raised to love boba, drink boba, contemplate life's mysteries with boba, hang out with friends over boba, study for exams sipping boba, sit in traffic chewing boba, and basically become a piece of boba yourself, you start to tell the difference between the good and the bad... boba. So, I started a Yelp Talk about where to find the best loose leaf tea selection and many members recommended Ten Ren in Rockville, so I decided to give it a shot tonight after work. As soon as I walk in, the first thought in my head is ... "DAMN, that's a lot of tea." Loose leaf, tea bags, tea hardware, snacks, bubble tea, etc... they have it ALL. It's a fun place to browse, but make sure you have an idea of what you want otherwise you'll be spending a lot of time here. It's a pretty small shop, but they've packed the place front to back, left to right. They also happen to be known for bubble tea, but I didn't have the chance to try some. Next trip! And unlike some of the other large tea chains, this place has a little bit of history outside of the US. They first started selling tea in 1953 through their predecessor company "Ming Fong Tea Co." and officially restructured and renamed in 1975 to "Ten Ren Tea Co." In other words, these guys have been around for decades and clearly have a commitment to tea harvesting, processing, and distribution. They've also attained numerous certifications (ISO + HACCP), so they've got a legit operation. Some other fun facts: they're listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange and also own a Ten Ren culture museum! The only reason this isn't five stars is that the tea hardware is a little overpriced -- there's a decent markup on the teapots, so it's probably better if you order online. I'm not talking about a 5-10% difference, but more towards the 20-25% range. It's probably better to get your hardware elsewhere. Some other tips: credit card minimum is $5 and if you order your tea in ounces, make sure you can do some mental math to calculate prices (they quote everything in lbs). read more

Loose Leaf Teas: Their osmanthus oolong is phenomenal, and the fact that they now carry a much less expensive version is great. We love brewing their rose petal black tea at home, and always have good luck with their tea keeping well. Bubble Tea: Oh, Ten Ren's Gingseng I somehow cave and pay the $5.30 for bubble tea every time I'm in Rockville, even though when I was first hunting for adequate boba I had written you off as "syrupy and mediocre." But, you can be syrupy and mediocre because you have functionally no competition. I thought once I moved out of Montgomery County into DC, I'd find something better. Fortunately for you, I haven't yet. So let me preface this by saying, this isn't by any standards great bubble tea--if we were in Los Angeles or Portland, I'd never suggest Ten Ren's against the other options. The tapioca pearls at Ten Ren's Gingseng and delicious. They are perfectly plump, with just the right amount of chewiness and sweetness. The tea is actually brewed tea from what I can tell--which is a great improvement over other places like that Taiwanese bakery up the street. I usually order a large peach black tea with boba, easy syrup. Service: I recently asked if I could get their rose petal black tea over ice and add to boba. This should have been a very easy request, (price for the brewed rose petal black tea that's already on their menu board, wait a little longer, pay the posted upcharge for boba), but they looked at me like I was crazy. Not ideal. When getting loose leaf teas, all of the staff is very helpful and can readily find something that you may like if you can give a few criteria. The happily let you smell the teas, and even brewed a sample of two for my boyfriend to try narrow down his options (well, it worked for them we left with both teas). There is a little bit of a communication lag--I wouldn't go as far as to call it a language barrier, it's not dramatic by any means. But please be patient--especially if it's YOU who lacks the necessary tea lingo to explain what you're looking for. read more

For something equivalent, you'll have to go to "spring water bistro" in Taichung Taiwan, where bubble tea was invented. We enjoy Ten Ren's tea not only for the bubble tea, but their monsterous selection on loose leafs and tea bags, as well as their extensive selection of ginseng. This place sells really good green tea! I give them 5 stars because the service is really excellent and they have a decent assortment of teas...many are extremely high quality/fresh. I actually learned something about tea during my shopping experience. They are on the pricier side but you get what you pay for. I only came here for their green tea; however, I noticed that they sold tea accessories too. I think the girls at Ten Ren hate me. Not like "oooh, there's Fenny, let's stone her to death" kind of hate (I hope)...I'm quite sure they couldn't pick me out of a lineup if they tried (even though I visit Ten Ren pretty regularly)...but everytime I go in there, they all sort of look at me like I'm Angelina Jolie showing up to Jennifer Anniston's birthday party. Yes that kind of distain. OK, perhaps not quite as dramatic. But you get the idea. I'm not sure what it is about me that caused this, because I assure you that I'm quite nice! And I also think that it's a testament to the deliciousness of the Ten Ren teas that I am willing to put up with this kind of attitude (OK, I'll admit, I sort of enjoy it...I'm a closet service masochist). So why do I enjoy Ten Ren so much? Well, to start with, it could be because Ten Ren has a pretty decent brand name as far as Chinese teas goes. When they first opened up, I think my mom peed in her pants a little from excitement. The staff (the ones that will say more then 3 words to me), are extremely knowledgeable and can expound upon the minute differences between teas and flower additives. With a grimace, they will kindly correct the errant customer that no, rose hips are not rose buds (they are the fruit of the rose plant). What the proper temperature to seep tea is (it's NOT boiling point - it's right before boiling), and how long various teas should be seeped for the best flavor. My dad even had Ten Ren host a tea class for us, a very long time ago. And finally, the selection. They have lovely gift boxes of teas, teapots, and various accoutrements that are perfect as host/ess or business gifts. I also love that there are a plethora of various blends of teas, at different price points that I can purchase by the ounce. If you don't put sugar, milk or lemon in your tea - and I *really* like you - I MAY offer a tasting of my favorite tea from Ten Ren...that costs $115 per ounce. Yes, I take my tea seriously. Ten Ren also serves bubble tea, but I'm going to say - it's definitely not their forte (the tapioca pearls are always too firm, or too mushy - and not sweet enough). Their main business is selling good tea. The customer service...well, my parents get treated like royalty when they visit. So perhaps it's just me. read more

I've been a customer at ten ren for over 12+ years. With so many bubble tea places/options in Rockville, I come back because of the quality of the tea they use and the friendly service. Joy, Diane and Kelsey are all very nice and offer great customer service. They not only remember customer by names, but they remb our go to drinks and modifications! They are open to modifications (less sugar, less bubbles, more ice, etc.) My favorites are almond black tea and plain jasmine green tea. If you are looking for something refreshing the wintermelon lemon with ai yu jelly is amazing! The bubbles have a soft chewy texture and always taste fresh. They are environmentally friendly and allow you to purchase a reusable cup or you can bring your own mug! I am honestly surprised by some of the reviews on here.
