We used to have a Ten Ren in Hawaii, and my husband, my friends, and I all loved it and came here everyday. We used to go just for the momi (as we call the bubble drinks) but after a long time later we discovered their SUPER delicious Beef Ball Noodles. The store is long gone now, it's been almost 3 years I think. But I still remember ordering B9 for Coconut Milk Tea and B10 for the Taro Milk Tea. Fast forward years later and my husband and I decided to go to SF for our honeymoon. After browsing catalogs, I see TEN REN! OMG! I need to go! I immediately went on the website, and yes, I realize it is a franchise so I didn't expect it to be exactly the same as the one in Hawaii. Fast forward to today. 01/29/17 WHAT IS THE DEAL WITH THIS INFANT SIZED PEARLS MADNESS? WHY? The one I go to in Milpitas is at least courteous enough to warn me, and every time I nope the eff out like any sensible person would. But the lady here didn't warn me and just made it. So I asked for legit full volume pearls that my manly teeth can chew on leisurely like a grown ass man, she, with the most bored expression, pointed at something under the counter that I couldn't even see, half yawning half muttering "Sold out" - no eff given. I yelped tenren and I've had it multiple times in LA so I thought it won't be bad. The prices are extremely low for $3 for boba. I should've known it's too good to be true. So so so marginal. Located in Chinatown, I would've expected something at least average. This was sadly below average. The tea itself was fine, but the boba was what really threw me off. It was abnormally small (and no, it wasn't the tiny boba) and way too soft. It tasted as if they'd cooked it for too long, or left it sitting overnight. Who knows - either way, it was not good. Absolutely flabbergha$ted How can one of Taipei's greatest brand name tea export still make a killer cup of tapioca milk tea, or a flavored kumquat green tea in Taipei (even if they are not the best), yet that flavor is not replicated in Northern California Ten Ren Tea Station cafes? Answer: laziness and taking shortcuts. The family that owns the NorCal branches doesn't seem to care anymore with regard to the Ten Ren Tea Station boba milk tea to go drinks, and honestly neither do many of the customers. This location is perfect for Chinatown...tourists that want boba won't give two $hit$ if it is watered down....as long as it is sweet, it doesn't matter they don't taste the tea. Do a tasting, and either fall sucker to Vital Tea Leaf or what not (or just spend the $ and get something decent from Red Blossom, brew it at home yourself). It seems now that the tea drinks to go process has been standarized for Ten Ren NorCal, so the same BS like Cupertino. It's quite sad. I can only hope the Richmond branch is not pulling this crap. Honey lemon green tea with aloe (listed as a special): when ordered, tea-rista takes out a cup, puts two small slices of lemon inside, then scoops ice into it, then pours a bit of transparent liquid in, then takes out this industrial sized huge bottle of very light green liquid (at least it's not Pine Sol!), pours it in, covers the lid, and hands me the drink. The Pine Sol sized presealed container was actually the tea mixture!!! Where was the honey? I have no idea if I got a lemon juice tea mixed with ice or watered down mass produced pre-bottled (not freshly brewed) tea mixed in with sweetener and lemon juice (and who knows if the lemon and honey flavoring are artificial). Whatever happened to using pre-brewed tea straight from the vats? This is why places that claim to use real tea to brew tapioca tea drinks are making a killing (even if they don't taste like Taiwan), because the competition isn't giving a crap anymore! Le sigh. I came here after dim sum because I was in a major bubble tea craving mood. I knew there was a ten rens close by so I had to go. I was a little disappointed though. I love Ten Rens so much! I've been to all the locations in New York even been to the on in Toronto and loved it. This location in San Francisco needs to do more work on their tapioca balls. It was definitely undercooked the last time I went there or have been sitting there for a while because it was so hard. The other locations i've been to always has their tapioca on point. The tea was fine though but the problem i had was that it was already pre-made. I hate when bubble tea places do that it doesn't add customization. All the other locations would make the tea on the spot and shake it with their bubble tea shakers. I ordered for 2 Thai and 2 oolong pearl tea. So the lady who helped me was so cold and rude. It said free tea sample and when I asked her for a sample she initially denied. Then when I passed the line to pay I noticed free tea sampling (attached a picture) and I asked her if I can taste ? Only then she gave me hot Jasmine tea as a sampler. I wanted to try another flavor as I was interested to buy. She just bluntly said no, even though I insisted to pay for trying out their sample. I just stepped out and waited for my family to join me as they were parking. Later my mom insisted on warm ginger tea and the same lady helped me at the counter. She rejected my card and said they don't accept cards for less than $5 and I paid her in cash. Generally the price range for tea at this place was from $3-$5 depending on pearl tea or jelly, and I wonder if they ask all the other customers to pay in cash for a check below $5? However their tea was above average and they can do much better with their customer service. People go there for their authentic tea flavor, taste and denying customer of the same is something unacceptable. read more

Whenever I come to Chinatown, I hit by TeaRen almost every time! I always got the Lemon Tea with Aloe! It's so refreshing especially if you're planning to walk around a lot. In New York, I always ordered the Taro smoothie with boba. So when I passed by the Ten Ren in SF, I ordered the same thing. The problem was, it didn't taste the same at all. It wasn't even close! The drink wasn't even purple. It was off white and it did not taste like Taro. Actually it did not taste like anything other than dirty water with ice. Love that Ten Ren serves real tea in their boba drinks. I ordered a Green milk tea with boba ($2.75). The boba this time was cooked perfectly and had a bit of sweetness to it (reminded me of sweetheart's bobas) and the drink itself had a strong bitter green tea taste (a bit too strong for my liking). I couldn't finish the drink due to the strong tea (very bitter) taste. This place is never consistent in the drink itself. It can get either really strong or really light in tea taste. There are several stores along Grant St. and offshoot alleys that sell loose-leaf tea, freshly imported candy, and bubble tea drinks. I have tried a number of them. Now I really just go to Ten Ren. They sell a big, wonderful variety of teas. Their bubble tea drinks are made from real tea - not powder, which is the grossest thing and a shame to do (like the store at the corner of California and Grant St.). It's not too sweet. I can ask for it hot or cold. Diabetics may enjoy bubble tea without sugar. The location is fun, in noisy, colorful, crass, authentic Chinatown. If you are not a fan of Chinatown, you can go to Ten Ren in the Ferry Building. I like this one. read more

I expected more from Ten Ren. The almond milk tea ($3) was way too sweet. Eddie W. is right- the almond flavoring was too strong. I felt like I was drinking almond-flavored sugar water, since I didn't taste any tea at all. Also, they make the drinks in less than a minute, because they have all these pre-made containers of mystery liquids that they just pour into your cup. Who knows how fresh the tea is? I guess I'm a little snobby when I saw this place. The perception of Chinatown has always been in my mind as a tourist trap. I can imagine in mind in that this probably used to be an Eastern Medicinal shop or some store selling useless trinkets. Very small place in an area that can be reached by walking or careful slow driving. This was what it sucked about coming to any Chinatown in any U.S. cities was that the sidewalks are always crowded. On a chilly windy day in San Francisco (surprised huh?), a few of our traveling companions decided to order hot milk tea or at least something hot to drink. These two young gals just couldn't mustered or braved through the cold weather up here. They were wearing mittens on a normal average day in May! Go figures! In almost unusual moment, we heard a couple of beep sound and realized their drinks that they have ordered were going to be microwaved. Yep, that's how they brewed it hot was nuked it in a microwave oven. I had the keen sense of ordering a normal iced green tea with a fruit flavor....only after I noticed some of our compadres who lived in this fine city was ordering anything but the hot drinks. Results?...obviously no need to point out that the hot drinks tasted like lukewarm flavorless drinks as the mixtures also evaporated in the microwave heating options. While the cold drinks maintained whatever flavors it had. Now granted this was also a weird set up that this particular location had. For instance, there are no outdoor seatings and not really much of a dining option. It was also one of the few times I have noticed a Ten Ren doesn't get the fine tea tasting. Maybe they have it now, but it was strictly a tea store and a take out tea station. It wasn't all it crack'd up to be, but for what I got that day was OK. Simple menu, with decent prices. About $3 for a small and $1 more for a large size. My sister got Thai tea, because you can't mess up Thai tea... But this location did. The lady didn't put a lot of ice, which usually is good, except it was super hot out. She put in a lot of tea, more than 3/4s of the cup and then put in condensed milk. It wasn't sweet do my sister requested more sugar. She poured in a sugar water mixture but it didn't help and my sister ended up tossing her drink after drink 3/4s of it. We also ordered a mango green tea, less sweet and I think everything was premixed. I didn't see her add any mango syrup in but my sisters BF said it was pretty good and drank the entire thing. This place uses a lot of syrups, you can see them next to the cash register. Just stick to their teas and you'll be fine! I ordered a roasted oolong milk tea and it was good. Ten Ren Tea is a tea chain and it is pretty consistent in terms of quality and reliability. I usually resort to getting Green Milk Tea (otherwise known as Jasmine Milk Tea) with aloe and it is yummy in my tummy. I usually kill my boba drinks in a few minutes and this was no exception. My friend got a hot Jasmine Tea and she enjoyed her drink, as well. We sat inside for a good twenty minutes and it was busy the whole time. The prices are also very reasonable. And so it was, the day after Thanksgiving, while waiting for a table for yum cha, I wandered into here and walked out with lots of tea. As if I need more tea. You know how some people are ashamed of their porn collections and hide them from their parents under the bed? I used to hide my tea under my bed because I had so damn much of it. We LOVE Ten Ren, especially the ones in LA. However, this one gives Ten Ren a bad name. The location is perfect and the facilities make me feel right at home (herbal tea and old-school seating), but the milk tea just plain sucks. We've come at least three times and each time, the milk tea is watery and disproportionately full of ice. I know it's an Asian thing to pack up a cup with ice to save money, but it's silly when we get enough ice to make a smoothie. Also, during our latest visit, I forgot to get a stamp when I was rung up on the register. However, I went back to the cashier one minute later and she said (in Chinese), "I can't give you a stamp because I already rung you up. How do I know you didn't already get a stamp?" We're accustomed to bad service from Chinese institutions, but it's a little jarring when they accuse you of lying! However, we try to be objective, so while I (Andrew) would love to give them one lone star, my better half is more compassionate and wants me to rate them on the product, not a rude cashier. I stumbled in here accidentally. I had a brain fart and somehow thought it was Red Blossom. Ok, I don't know how that could happen, but it was a long day, and I had been trekking around SF, then Chinatown trying to find a rolling pin to make dumplings with. I was hungry and tired and remembered that the boyfriend was running low on tea. In a moment of delirium, I decided to be nice, and buy him tea on my way back. Anyway, I realized it was NOT Red Blossom too late. After I stumbled in, I was like: Uh OH wrong place, but the Dragonlady behind the counter had already locked her sights on me. CRAP. I told her I was looking for a green tea and that a medium grade one will do. She shook her head and convinced me that I should buy the $130/lb one. I was going to protest, but she gave me a death stare that was amplified x's 10000 by her blue tattooed eyebrows. All I could say was "uhh, maybe one that costs a little less." Making my way down Grant Ave, I got a recommendation from the tour books to try Ten Ren Tea. It mentioned you could ask for free samples. So I did and the main lady working the counter didn't seem all that enthused to give me any and in the end it wound up being a basic green tea. I didn't dare ask for other samples fearing she would think I was just looking for free tea. They do sell a lot of loose tea at some pretty steep prices. I like tea but not to pay what they were asking. What was tasty was the Iced Mango Green Tea that included tapioca pearls on the bottom that I purchased for $3. Venue Review: The shop wasn't very big and we decided to go elsewhere to hang out, so not too much to say on this end. It was pretty clean and neat. Overall Impression: Cute boba shop, decent boba, but I'm ambivalent on this one! I've heard people who prefer Fantasia, some people who prefer TenRen, but for me, if you ran a blind test on me, I couldn't tell the difference. The best milk tea I've had! I had a black tea milk and my husband had the jasmine. Both were outstanding. The tea was nice and strong, no artificial powders here. It really makes a difference. The boba were soft and chewy without being mushy. Perfect consistency and nicely sweetened. I don't know how I'm going to go back to standard boba shops after this! I saw after we went that many Yelpers reported that it was cash only. We paid with a credit card. There was a .50 surcharge for the convenience, but fear not if you didn't bring cash with you. read more

All havoc breaks loose when a gaggle of Yelpers decided to take over this place. SF and LA alike crowded the counter and caused this place to be a scene. I don't think one of the employees cared that we were giving her place a bunch of business. She was just downright surly. But I think everyone got their drinks in a safe manner as we took to the streets with our various flavors and melded perfectly with all the other tourists in Chinatown. read more

The first time I went to Ten Ren's was in Riverside, CA. I was pleasantly surprised to find a location in San Francisco! Although this place is known for being slightly pricier than others, it's totally worth it. My favorite drink is typically their Brown Sugar Milk Tea with Pudding & Boba, but I was craving Taro Milk Tea instead. The time it took to order and receive my drink was super quick! The boba is sweet, and the milk tea tastes good. Their beverages are on the sweeter side, so make sure to ask them for less sugar if that is your preference. Decent boba place. I'm an avid fan of boba, and have tried countless boba shops. Ten Ren Tea was just whatevers. Their boba balls were slightly mushy and soggy, where the outer layer of the boba ball just kinda dissolves in your mouth. Another thing that bothered me was the temperature of my drink. I ordered Mango Green Tea ($3), and it was almost lukewarm. I don't know if they forgot to add ice, or if they usually skip it. Also, it was too sweet for my liking. I have a sweet tooth, but they poured on the sugar in the drink. Next time, I'll ask for less sweetened. read more

Their tapioca drinks! are wonderful! They use real fruit syrups!! Unlike Quicklys which are mostly sugar but you can find pieces of fruits in the drinks at Ten Ren. I love their drinks! Their tapioca balls are so soft and sweet. read more

Started my morning with my favorite tea ever! Large Green Milk Tea with Pearl. Yummy! I love that they use real tea and real milk. It makes me happy. Would have given 5 stars but it is a little on the expensive side for boba so -1 star. read more

YAY for freshness!!! I had a strawberry green tea (#9) with boba and it was super refreshing! Even though the boba was not at all soft and squishy but a little hard (a sign that they're not as fresh as it could be), the tea was good enough to make up for that. But I could tell that they used REAL green tea and you can chew the strawberry chunks and seeds. Seriously I didn't know green tea boba could be so good when they make it with real tea! :) I'm looking forward to coming back and trying some of their other bobas or even some of their loose leaf teas. read more
