Injury (acid burn) due to dentist negligence
    Muyi L.

Tend has given me both the WORST clinical experience and the WORST customer experience EVER IN MY LIFE. Was only seeking a dental treatment, got injury because of the doctor's negligence, and now having a permanent scar on my face. After the injury, the whole Tend team were acting unprofessionally and irresponsibly: 1. The doctor was aware of the chemical burn but chose to act like nothing happened. No first aid, no aftercare advice. Nothing. 2. After I tried to seek assistance, they constantly asked me to wait and then just disappeared. The whole process has been hurting me so much that I feel obliged to leave an honest review. On January 21st Friday at 2 PM, I visited Tend Post Office Square in Boston and did the filling treatment with my teeth. I was given anesthesia to my lower mouth and thus had lost feeling on my jaw. During the procedure, something dropped on my face while my lower mouth was completely numb. I had no clue what had happened until the assistant/hygienist found etching gel on my jaw. The procedure was not stopped however, the assistant wiped the chemical and the dentist continued working with my teeth without any further treatment/ first aid. When the procedure ended, *neither the dentist nor the assistant/hygienist said anything about aftercare of the acid burn on my facial skin and acted as if nothing had happened.* Nevertheless, I found a noticeable burn on the skin of my jaw through the mirror and asked the assistant, he assured me that the redness would go away "in a few hours" and asked me not to worry about it. I had not a single idea that the "gel" contains 37% phosphoric acid until I did my own research later that day. After a few hours, the redness did not disappear and became more severe. At 6:57 PM January 21, I called the office hoping to seek advice on any immediate treatment/care on the wound but had no luck to reach out to the *real* office even if the Post Square office closes at 8 PM. A staff picked up my phone, and said they would contact me later. They did not. January 22, no calls from them and my wound was getting worse. I had to seek care at a dermatologist myself and was told there is a chance of scarring. January 24, I still have not heard anything from them so I emailed their customers service. No replies. After a week, they emailed me and asked for more pictures and a full visit summary of my dermatologist visit, did not propose any kind of solution. I emailed them what were requested right away. Then they disappeared. Now more than two months has passed, I emailed again to follow up with my case. They said they will send me a very small amount of gift card (in the amount of my previous dermatologist visit) to use at Tend. And that's it, no further apologies, no reimbursement. What makes me more angry is, in their most recent email, they were trying to make a statement saying I have confirmed things I have never confirmed verbally, only trying to avoid responsibility. I absolutely find their attitude and tone awfully offensive and unacceptable. I was disappointed with my treatment experience at Tend. And I am even more disappointed with how things have been handled after I was hurt. I do not feel valued or respected as a patient and a customer. They made a mistake and caused a lot of physical and mental pain to me. But all they have been doing is to avoid responsibility by pretending they have not caused me pain at all. This pain will never go away, it stays as a mark on my face. People make mistakes, but it is WRONG to just walk away and pretend nothing happened. Tend needs some education for sure. And they must correct their attitude!

It is near impossible to get in touch with Tend if there is an issue. My clean was subpar at best. My appointment for filling and inlay was made with the wrong dentist. I told the dentist multiple times that my inlay was not comfortable and now I have to schedule ANOTHER appointment to have it fixed. It's just inefficient. And the "bells and whistles" barely work. The AV capabilites have always had a problem in every room I've been in - unable to watch a show, the headphones don't work, the headphone won't connect with the TV. The issues are endless. Would not recommend. In true "TEND" fashion, I was just charged $575 without warning for something was supposed to be $175 which I paid at my last visit. AND I called the number below and am on my 3rd attempt without any success. If I could give 0 stars, I would.

I could not wear my old one - from another dental office - because it was so uncomfortable. I just got my new one and it sure fits better and feel a LOT better. I think the Boston office share a cosmetic space. I don't see anything wrong with that. It is cost effective to share office space. It is smart. My old PFM crowns have all have an ugly line at the bottom margin, as well as metal showing on the top of the crown (that looks like an old school silver amalgam filling). Moreover, the color does not look natural all, and they are VERY susceptible to chipping and becoming unsightly and uncomfortable to my tongue. Dr. Andrews designed this Zirconia crown so good it looks identical to the natural crown on the other side of my mouth. It looks %100 natural, something I could never say about my porcelain crowns. The shape and color match are perfect. I have two other Zirconia crowns (implants) that Dr. Andrews placed 8 years ago. Not a single chip, they still look and function perfectly!

When I went in for my regular dental cleaning, I was informed that I would need a "deep cleaning" procedure because of progressive gum disease. I was also never seen by the dentist or the periodontist. Upon further research, I learnt that a deep cleaning procedure is invasive, requires local anesthesia, and a hygienist going into your gums for rootplaning. For someone who has very good hygiene and flosses on the regular, this was quite surprising. I was pushed to schedule two appointments for this "deep cleaning" that would involve a hefty out of pocket charge. Skeptical of this diagnosis, I went and got a second and third opinion with periodontists and was informed that my gums/teeth were completely normal. Avoid Mint Dental at all costs. They are attempting to oversell unnecessary, wasteful, and invasive services.

**DO NOT GO HERE** I regret no standing up and leaving before letting the dentist go in my mouth…read more To start, when I walked in it did not resemble a dentist office at all by first glance (fyi - this was my first and only time going here). There was no sign saying "Mint" or any indicator that I was in the right place. I had to ask the woman behind the desk who didn't even notice I walked in if I was at Mint Dental. I was not even signed in at the front desk, or given paperwork to fill out. They brought me right back to the examination room. When walking to my examination room, there were multiple all white naked mannequins standing in the hallways...very strange. Once I was seated in the dentist chair I took a glance around and noticed hair all over the dirty floors and that the music was being played from a bluetooth speaker sitting at the foot of my chair. This place is cheap looking and disgusting. When the dental assistant came in she IMMEDIATELY tried to do x-rays. I had to say "No, I just had x-rays taken from my previous dentist a couple months ago, can't you use those?" She insisted that they needed new x-rays and didn't even inquire about who my old dentist was or when/what work was done. And like I mentioned, I hadn't filled out any paperwork yet so there is no way for them to know who previously worked on my teeth. Now at my previous dentist, I was in the process of having cavities filled but moved to Boston before it was finished. This is why I was at a new Dentist office to start. Anyways, the assistant asked my what toothpaste I used (I use sensodyne) and she told me I need a prescription toothpaste...but they can sell it to me right there in the office for a lower price. She told me the name of it, which I now forget...but I googled it and it was a $80 toothpaste. WHAT THE HECK!? At this point I knew this place was not right! After the assistant checked my gums and gave me a cleaning, I was brought into another room where I was told the dentist would do an exam. Again, the floor of this room was covered in hair, but there was no speaker this time. Maybe worst of all, the piece of dental equipment which has the light shining into your mouth was being held together with RUBBER BANDS! I sat in this room for AN HOUR before the dentist came in. During the first 5 minutes of this hour I completed my paperwork on an Ipad they handed me. The dentist was dressed in street clothes her hair was not tied back. I thought it was odd that she was not wearing the classic white dentist coat...but no big deal. She spoke to me for what seemed like 20 minutes before looking in my mouth. After she did her thing, she asked me if I was interested in any whitening treatments etc and I was given a small bag which read "MINT". Inside was a loose, unwrapped wooden toothbrush and some unsealed powder toothpaste. I threw this out as soon as I left. Handing out unsealed products to patients is unacceptable and unsanitary. When the dentist walked me out to the reception desk, she handed the receptionist the 'prescription toothpaste' and said, "She'll take this too." I spoke up and said, "No, actually I am not interested in purchasing the toothpaste." They said they would email me to schedule my next appointment to start filling cavities, and I just said "ok' and left. They never emailed me. I think that this place is such a scam. I strongly advise that please no one go here. It is unprofessional, unsanitary and not a place you want to go to have someone working inside your mouth.

Backstory: I had switched to a job with a dental insurance plan that didn't cover the fantastic dentist I'd been going to for a couple of years. I decided to try Congress Dental Group because it was close to my new office. The office was clean and the people working there were friendly. My hygienist did a nice job of cleaning my teeth. In fairness, there were some positives, but the list ends there. When the dentist came by to see me, he informed me that I needed to have eight cavities filled. He also said that they needed to redo a filling that I'd had done only 18 months ago. I thought this all sounded ludicrous and refused to schedule any additional appointments. I couldn't get out of there fast enough. I didn't take any action for nearly a year and my teeth seemed fine--they weren't rotting out of my mouth and I wasn't experiencing any pain. I ended up switching jobs again, this time back to an employer who had insurance that covered my tried-and-true dentist. Guess what? No cavities. Since my story seems to align with many other reviews here, I thought I'd share. Coming to this place for a cleaning is fine, but definitely get a second opinion if you're being told you need to have all sorts of work done.

The notice said it was my "final notification before collections" -- yet this was literally the first time I had ever been contacted about it. They said they had mailed letters, but I had moved and had specifically informed the office of my new address, so they knew mailed statements wouldn't reach me. Despite that, they never used any of the contact methods I actually receive. The charge itself was for fluoride, which I never would have agreed to if I had known it wasn't covered by my insurance. It was $98 -- something that could easily be written off considering the circumstances. When I explained everything and asked them to comp it, I was told the staff member "did not have the authority" to adjust the balance. But after I mentioned that I would leave an honest review describing the situation, suddenly she did have the ability to offer 25% off. That made it clear that the earlier "I don't have the authority" line was simply a pressure tactic, not the truth.
