** The following review reflects my delivery experience DURING the shelter-in-place order currently in effect. ** I used to go to the one at 50 Fremont in the city all the time when I was working in the FiDi. Usually after work when it was flooded with Salesforce staff apparently extending their staff meetings since one of their buildings is right next door. Their selections always looked healthier than other assembly-line operations that focus more on the carbs. I had not tried the one that subsequently opened on University Avenue, but given the myriad of choices on Grubhub, I gravitated to their menu based on my prior familiarity. Jamie W. decided on the $15.40 Harvest Chicken Salad, which was a robust cross between a Cobb and a Waldorf salad with salt-&-pepper chicken, toasted walnuts, thinly sliced Fuji apples, grapes, white cheddar cubes, and baby greens and accompanied by a golden balsamic vinaigrette (photo: https://bit.ly/2MWv3vt). Nice ingredients but it was the particularly succulent chicken that stood out here. I went for the same-priced Tuna Nicoise Salad which took the classic form with baby greens, green beans, potatoes, tomato, capers, olives, and a hard-boiled egg. The saltiness of the capers and olives offered a sharp counterpoint to the fresh bounty. Their salads are great -- salad nicoise, mediterranean steak salad, cobb salad, and salmon salad -- all delicious, fresh, delicious, and filling. Proportions are very good, with the exception of the salmon salad, in which I found the portion of salmon to be small -- I'm going to ask the cost of double protein on my next visit. Service is friendly and quick. Tables are frequently dirty. Restroom is clean. Parking can be difficult. read more

I'm not a salad person. But the salmon plate with a side of mash potatoes and arugula salad from tender greens is so bomb. Portion size is perfect (no leftovers) and they cook their salmon perfectly every time! I love how creamy the mash potatoes are, taste like they are made in house. Don't get me started on the arugula salad. Literally the salad is my favorite part, my FAVORITE! I love how bright, salty, and balance the dressing is! Food (9/10) I always get my salmon plate. No complaints about my favorite dish. The drinks are also refreshing and taste handcrafted. I always get the green juice or whatever seasonal drink they have. I love the idea of Tender Greens: fast casual, health conscience eats. You order from their large customizable menu that displays what diet can eat what (gluten free, veggie, etc...), you pay and they bring you your eats. On a Sunday morning just a few people were there and we were able to enjoy their very large patio space with 5 toddlers in tow. The back patio is large, bright and perfect for a group. I love that they are growing veggies back there to use in their dishes, so special! The food was a tad bit of a let down for the price. The chipotle chicken salad was about $15 w/tax and it was very basic and not the largest salad. Topped with cut up chipotle roasted chicken, it was tasty, but there were some very fatty/cartilagey pieces. Again the salad was greens, chicken, dressing and some tortilla chips; very basic. For $15 I want more veggies, or at least avocado in that bad boy. Overall, if you have dietary restrictions Tender Greens has something for everyone. i used to love going to the walnut creek location. i ordered a plate with the falafel, mashed potatoes and gravy and the baby spinach goat cheese salad. most of the order was fine but the mashed potatoes were sour and smelled fermented and nutty? I took a couple bites and abandoned it for my own safety. read more

Great place for a quick fresh meal. The salads are delicious and the sandwich was really yummy. Love that the chicken breast is flavorful and juicy. I got the potatoes with my sandwich but I found them to be a bit under seasoned for my liking, my friend thought they were fantastic. I think I'll probably try another side next time. I appreciate that you can make your own plates and bowls and love that the service is friendly. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating and the establishment is kept clean. Was looking for a healthier option to bring takeout or my daughter after surgery. Service was great with friendly, "loving" staff on Valentine's Day. I had an online order snafu and called the store and they tried to fix it and gave me a gift card for the trouble. They did get one of our orders wrong (but our bad for not checking before we left) but all of the food was delicious! We will definitely be back. read more

I fell in love in Tender Green back when I discovered their Walnut Creek location, and am so excited they opened a location in Berkeley off University. I love that they use fresh, organic, sustainable ingredients. I usually go for their plates, which come with your choice of: protein, salad, and mash potatoes. You can also sub out the potatoes for roasted vegetables if you want to cut out carbs. My favorites proteins are: steak, seared tuna, and buttermilk fried chicken. The fried chicken here is amaaaaazing! Only downside is the area can be rough at night time with the homeless that congregate in front of the McDonald's next door. However, I've been here during the nighttime a few times and have had no issues. read more

Good spot for a healthy business lunch in downtown Berkeley, just minutes from the BART station. I went with a couple of local business friends I'd met recently, who had highly recommended the place. After placing our orders, we sat in the sunny patio out back. The food didn't take long to arrive. I had ordered the Happy Vegan (700 calories, $13): farro with cranberry and nuts, quinoa with cucumber and beets, green hummus, tabbouleh, baby greens and lemon vinaigrette. It was served with a loaf of bread and a smile! My dish tasted healthy but was less sweet than I expected - likely because it was practically devoid of cranberry or beets (I looked!). But I enjoyed it nevertheless, because the nuts, green hummus and tabbouleh imparted a pleasing texture, and the lemony flavor was spot on. My lunch companions seemed to relish their food as well. They were in a sanguine mood as we chatted away about matters both business and personal - which is what one wants at a business lunch. Finally, it was time to leave. Was craving a balanced meal after lots of celebratory dinners so decided to come here for a nutritious yummy meal! Compared to sweetgreens, tender greens is way more substantial and tasty for my palette. I love the choices of protein and how much flexibility of choice there is with the sides. I always tend to get their plates with steak or bbq chicken, or either their mediterranean steak salad. The chicken soup was actually pretty good too and the fries were yummy (I usually don't like fries). Their outdoor is newly renovated and I would definitely come back more often now that the outdoor is so spacious and designed so well. read more

I love love love this place!!! Everything is good. I often order three salads and two dinners online for the week. My fiancé is a meat and potatoes man so he gets the chipotle chicken with extra chicken and a double portion of mashed potatoes. I order the salmon dinner with veggies and a salad. I also order salads for my work at home lunches. All of them are really good. AND I tried the chicken sandwich and you can forget any of the fast food chicken sandwich wars. I also saw that they had a beautiful patio in the back for outdoor dining, but we were hot and wanted AC so we chose to stay indoors. The workers were super kind, especially considering it was our first time dining there. It's a more casual eatery, so you order at the counter, take a number, then take a seat. I enjoyed how the plates were customizable! What We Ordered: - Plate w/ Chipotle BBQ Chicken, butter lettuce, and seasonal veggies, comes w/ bread (4/5): This was surprisingly good--the portion was a little smaller than I would've liked for the price, but my boyfriend and I were surprisingly satiated afterwards. Hands down the best tuna Niçoise salad ever. It's ok with the steak but the tuna is king. It's always consistently vibrant, tasty and delicious. First of all, Tender Greens (is greater than) Organic Greens. That's right. If I were to be PC about it then I would tell you that their menu items are fairly different and it would be like comparing apples to oranges but if I had to pick where to get dinner right here, right now, I would go to Tender Greens 10 times out of 10. If you like fried chicken, you MUST get the Buttermilk Fried Chicken. It is better than any Popeyes or KFC I have ever had in my life, hands down. Moreover, the portions are generous and you are likely getting more bang for your buck than a 4 piece at Popeyes with a side of lousy mashed potatoes or cole slaw. Speaking of mashed potatoes, the mashed potatoes you can get on the side here at Tender Greens is ABSOLUTELY OUT OF CONTROL. This was my first visit to Tender Greens. Apparently it's a chain restaurant that started in Los Angeles. I'm vegan so their main vegan option was my pick. I ordered the happy vegan salad, which includes farro wheat with cranberry and hazelnuts, quinoa with cucumber and beets, green hummus, tabbouleh, baby greens, and lemon vinaigrette, served with a grilled herb crostini bread. I'm a fan. The salad was surprisingly filling, to a point of contentment. I was neither stuffed nor hungry after eating, which means there's definitely room for dessert if wanted. Essentially, it didn't feel heavy. The food also tasted good. The salad reminded me a little bit of the salad bowls from Nourish Cafe in San Francisco, of which I am a huge fan. This was similar to those but with a different selection of ingredients. Price wise, I spent a little over $14 on just the salad. They also have a few in-house beverages available such as lemonade, teas, agua frescas. I may try one the next time around. They also have a dessert selection but I didn't see any vegan options. I would definitely get this salad again and do plan on coming back. I recommend the happy vegan salad to everyone regardless of diet. read more

Tender Greens is a good place to go if you want a hearty wholesome all-American meal. Meals come with a protein of your choice, a side salad, and some decent sides. It sorta reminds me of Boston Market, but fancy. The main issue here is the price. Now, Tender Greens is pretty good quality. The meat is somewhat tender, the vegetables are fresh, and the sides are flavorful. However, the food still does have a sort of dining hall feel, like it was scooped onto your plate rather than made fresh. While eating there, I also get this uneasy feeling that I could have easily made this dish at home. Don't get me wrong, it is good quality. It's just pretty simple, so I don't feel it's really worth the money, especially for how little meat you get. That being said, I'll still probably drop in occasionally for a kid's meal if I want a nice healthy standard meal and am too lazy to cook. What drew us in was the big shady, dog-friendly patio. Then we saw a photo of the roasted veggies and read the exciting menu. This place is a hit or miss, as sometimes I've had decent experiences while other times portions are tiny and the food comes out overcooked/burnt. But if you care at all about cleanliness and food safety, you should thoroughly examine your food before eating! I recently noticed multiple strands of short hair in my steak. I'm not sure what the standards are in the kitchen. But especially given the current circumstances, I don't want to risk consuming unsanitary and contaminated food. Great find in DT Berkeley! I had the avocado toast and my friend had a salad. She also had a chocolate chip cookie, which I had a piece of and was tasty. They are card only, which is why I gave 4 instead of 5 stars. I'm not against credit/debit cards at all but I often pay cash for purchases under $10. Maybe they'll accept cash as Covid cases drop. This is one of my favorite places to grab a bite in downtown. Although, the price to portion ratio isn't very good. It's a little pricey and the portions are "small" (realistically, they're probably giving a portion that is healthily sized and not overkill), but still, I always leave here slightly unsatisfied. I usually get a plate which I believe comes with a protein and you can pick 2 sides. The fried chicken is really good and also the grilled salmon. For the sides I always go with the mashed potato because potato is so filling it helps me think I'm getting my money's worth. For greens, I always go with the romaine hearts because it comes with Caesar dressing which I think they do well here. I'm obssessseddd with the side of bread they give here that I always eat it slowly so I can have some bread with every bite. I feel like I could always go for 2 pieces of bread though. Quality diminished. I usually order to go and it's been good up until recently. One time they sent me steak, mashed potatoes and an arugula fennel salad...the arugula was mostly yellowed and rotten. Which is absolutely unacceptable. You can literally see that it's yellow and rotten, without having to dig through it. Yet they packaged it and sent it out anyways. Today I ordered the same thing because I actually like their steak bed mashed potatoes. This time I opted for roasted tomato soup instead of the salad, because I can no longer trust their salads. The bag arrived with steak stains all over the bag and receipt. Already sketchy. It's important to note that they staple the bag close to the food container, so there's not a lot of room for it to shaken it round in. But when I opened the bag, the lid of the container was not actually on. It as sitting slanted and barely on the container. STEAK WAS SPILT OUT OF THE CONTAINER INTO THE DAMN PAPER BAG. On top of that... it was cooked to the wrong temperature. It was supposed to be medium rare. What came was well done steak. Absolute disregard for quality on the restaurant's part.
