I've been here a handful of times and I'd say 60% of the time I have enjoyed it while the other 40% of the time I leave not very satisfied. I'd say I definitely avoid going to places if I know I have such high odds that it's not going to be an enjoyable visit. The food quality is typically amazing. I usually order the marinated steak or the fried chicken and my sides are usually the spinach or tendergreen salad and mash potatoes. The fried chicken is some of the best chicken I have ever had and the same goes with the mash potatoes. I can't believe how delicious it is, when it's made correctly. My last visit, the chicken was extremely salty and while I usually get a few "chicken strips," last time I was given one large piece of chicken and it just was not very good. It was terribly salty and the breading wasn't the same. Is it possible they changed the way they make it? I definitely would not be ordering this again if this is the way its going to be. The steak was on point and delicious. It's made medium rare although I wouldn't have mind it rare! Our plates typically come with toast but this last visit there was no toast given. I thought maybe they forgot so I went to ask and I was told they ran out. They did offer me sliced rolls instead which I took. I was surprised they didn't tell me when I went to get my order that a I was only going to receive 75% of my entrée (chicken, mash potatoes, salad, toast) . Sure it's a piece of toast but man I LOVE that piece of toast. It's always nicely buttered and toasted. The service is mixed. Once I was there and ordered 2 chicken plates. The chicken on one plate compared to the chicken on the other plate was night and day. One had the typical amount and the other had half of that. HALF I kid you not. I went to the cashier and asked her how come this plate had so much less. I was given some answer that they weigh all the chicken before its plated so that both plates had the same amount of chicken. I guess she probably wasn't going to lie to me about weighing it and she talked to me like I was an idiot or something. Without a doubt if any of us got the two same plates, we'd all go ask and see why one is "smaller" than the "other." I unfortunately left my scale at home so I accepted her smart-alek response. I went back to my table and put each plate down and took out my handy cellphone to take pictures of my identical entrees. I wish I could find the pictures to upload but I think I deleted them after we got it resolved. Couple minutes later, a guy from the back of the kitchen came out to let me know that they were making more chicken for us and that we had received the last couple pieces of the last batch which is why we might have gotten less. His explanation made absolute sense to me and 5 minutes later he delivered a plate with enough chicken for 2 whole plates. I thanked him and appreciated him coming out to us. Interestingly I usually go to the Tendergreens at the Irvine Spectrum and I have never had unpleasant visit there. The food may be considered pricey but you're getting some great tasting gourmet food for about $13-$14 a person. I don't consider it fast food and I feel like you'd have a hard time finding another place that had food of this quality and taste for this price. I'll probably return here because its closer to me. Too bad I'll have a 50/50 chances of leaving unsatisfied but the delicious food justifies me coming back. read more

For the third or fourth time recently, we've had to wait more than 30 minutes past the quoted time for our takeout. Maybe I have higher standards in these type of food, but Tender Greens was average. Just that. Average. I like that the place is more of a healthy option you can have for a meal. However, there aren't too many choices as far as sides and such goes. My meat was definitely charred and overcooked, which made it difficult for me to taste the actual flavor of the meat. When we asked the cashier about it, she hollered back to the kitchen where 3 employees were just standing there doing nothing. There is no Tender Greens near where I live. But many years ago I had lunch at the one in Marina Del Rey, and I have good memories of that one. So, here I was visiting a friend for his birthday and I decided to take him and his wife for dinner at the Tender Greens in the University Center. This mall is a great place to just stroll around and Tender Green really has an optimum location with lots of indoor and outdoor seating. The nice thing about being located in the middle of an outdoor mall, you are not aware of any traffic, so it makes your do ing experience all the more pleasant. This is the kind of restaurant where you order and receive your food and pay at counter. Beware, that they have become a "cashless" restaurant. I personally think that my exclude some people, but oh well, I guess they have their own reasons. The place was quite packed on a Thursday evening. The staff seemed extraordinarily busy, but it didn't affect their friendliness and courtesy. Between the salmon plate and the Niçoise salad that my friends ordered and my chicken and baby spinach with goat cheese and nuts the food was flavorful, diverse, and fresh. However, my friends who is a particularly picky eater, an excellent chef, as well as a self proclaimed food critic felt his salmon was overcooked. (He had ordered it rare). The food is delicious. I've never had a bad experience here food-wise. This spot is like an upscale "fast food" spot. It's a little pricey, about the same amount you'd pay if you were to eat an actual restaurant. I've tried their bbq chicken salad, bbq chicken sandwich, and "angry" vegan (vegan dish with steak). I always get mashed potato with tendergreen salad. If I don't feel like tendergreen salad then ceasar for that day. I order Tuna Niçoise salad on the day I crave something refreshing. Its lemony vinaigrette dressing with caper and olive perfectly blend with seared tuna. And I get the mint lemonade for drink. It gets super crowded during lunch time since it's near a university. I try to avoid the peak lunch time and go before or after. Sometimes beef has a lot of tendon or tough part. Other than that, I don't mind ordering backyard steak every time I'm here. read more

Came for dinner around 6:00 on Sunday. I ordered the Harvest salad and my bf ordered the marinated steak salad. It was one of the best salads I've ever had. All the fruit was so fresh! What I didn't like was paying $12 for a fruit salad. I feel like it was worth about $8 max. Yes, everything was fresh and local, but $12 is high in my opinion. I liked that the salads come with a delicious bread crostini. We also ordered the potato rosemary soup which again was delicious. Even my meat eating, salad hating bf loved his steak salad. One criticism would be I wish they cut the lettuce more. Most of the pieces were too big and I had to cut with a knife. Regardless I would definitely come back again. I had Tender Greens for lunch the other day. Overall it was good. I got the falafel wrap, the flavors were really good and it was a decent size. If you like falafel this is a good choice. I wasn't as thrilled with the "simple salad" on the side. The dressing was good, but the salad was a little too simple. It was basically just lettuce with dressing. The price for the wrap and the side of lettuce with dressing was $12.65. Felt a little steep. I've been thinking about eating here but shied away thinking it was vegetarian or health food. Well it is healthy food but also beef, chicken and fish. Atmosphere was clean, urban and fresh. Menu is on the wall as you walk in. Like so many restaurants nowadays, you pick from about 7 protein items and two sides. Sides can be one of several delicious looking salads, soup, mash, grilled veggies which today were green beans, zucchini, corn, and sweet peppers. I had the fried chicken with mash and grilled veg. The fried chicken wasn't exactly dry, but wasnt overly moist either. Could have used some gravy or a sauce. I settled for a pat of butter. The breast was a bit hard to cut unless I went with the grain. Breading was crispy and substantial without being overdone. I don't mean to say I didn't like the chicken because it was very, very good and I would order it again. I think their sides are what makes u wanna slap yo mamma. Grilled veg were perfectly done with just the right amount of seasoning to perk them up, yet let the natural taste come through. Mash was dope! I took small bites just to be able to savor them throughout the meal. The mash portion could have been larger. Came with a nice garlic and butter grilled fettuna. Nice surprise. My friend ordered the grilled salmon with an arugula, fennel and shaved Parmiggiano salad that he said was to die for. The prices aren't exactly inexpensive, however it was good value for money.
