I have been meaning to review this since going for the first time in October of 2010. I've been more times than I'd care to admit and haven't had a bad experience once. Yes, the service can sometimes be slow but it's always pleasant and friendly. And the prices are absolutely ACES! The quality of the sushi is pretty good for the price point. There's not a lot of variety but what they do offer is consistently good. Recently I tried the green tea crème brûlée... it's painfully good without being overly sweet. I only liked the green tea cheesecake but I usually don't gravitate to cheesecake in general. Bathroom has always been clean and I've never had a problem finding parking in the underground garage. They've started offering a special in partnership with Thornton Place Cinemas: $2 off an adult ticket and 10% off your meal at Tengu with a $10.00 minimum purchase Mmm count me in for that! read more

the service at this place was so disappointing. the food used to be much better, but is now overpriced and mediocre. i was thirsty and finished my water a few minutes into sitting down. it was never refilled, no one ever came to check on us. or the other people around us. i had to drink my moms water. if you needed something you had to go up to the desk, or desperately try to wave someone over and wait for however long. i understand being understaffed, but there was less than 10 people inside the restaurant. and to not check on any of your customers? also, the sushi consists of primarily rolls with mayo or other sauces on top instead of nigiri. not great if you like traditional japanese food. i found it hard to find things i liked on the belt. sometimes the sushi would be okay, other times the rice would be hard and old. the one good thing i would recommend was the deep fried oysters ($10 for 4...). unfortunately i will not be returning here read more

I gave this place another try recently at the recommendation of a friend who convinced me that saving 10% with my movie ticket made it worth it. My initial visit years ago was so mediocre that I had actually forgotten I had already dined here, thankfully yelp helps me keep track. I really love conveyor belt sushi and wanted to have a better experience since I am always in North Gate and in need of food. Sadly my experience was pretty similar. This place is small, I would think that with such a large movie theater next door it would need more space but there are a variety of other eating places nearby. Parking here is very easy in the garage which is one of the few things this place does have going for it. We had to wait quite awhile to be seated and the service was pretty mediocre. I wanted to order a few items off the menu, it took forever to get the servers attention, then the food took forever to come and was quite expensive. I did enjoy the Inari sushi. I also like anywhere that gives you unlimited wasabi and ginger. My friends seemed to enjoy their cheesecake and it was easy enough to split the bill. For most of my meal I spent my time thinking about how much I prefer other conveyor belt sushi places. I longed for the blue light above the table that I could switch on to get my servers attention. I often find myself in this neighborhood but someone never came here. Conveyor belt sushi does the trick sometimes but I wish it would move faster. When I went in, they weren't terribly busy which is good and bad. Sometimes having too few people eating will limit your choices. I like that they have prices on the wall that correspond to the color of the plate. Additionally, like other conveyor belts spots, you can order some things off the menu like chicken karaage and a variety of other dishes. I had some rolls and nigiri. The dragon roll is not the best I've had but was prepared as expected. The spicy tuna and spicy salmon were good. The ahi was had good color, texture, and appropriate marbling. The crunchy rolls were crisp outside and tender inside. Staff members were friendly, efficient, and accommodating. Overall, it was decent and the price was right. I was looking forward to trying this place since it's located in Thornton Place - and with the success of Five Guys and a movies cinema, I assumed that this place would be no less. Alas, it was just okay. I went by myself without company on a Saturday afternoon for a late lunch, maybe around 2? Being the Sushi Land freak that I am, I was excited to try this place out, but when I was seated, there was barely anything on the belt. The waiter who seated me told me that they were actually supposed to be closing soon because apparently there is a certain time between lunch and dinner when they're closed. But this is a kaiten-style (conveyor belt) sushi restaurant - the only places I've seen that close between lunch and dinner are buffets like Todai and Blue Fin or fancy classy restaurants. It doesn't make sense to me as to why they need to close between lunch and dinner in the first place. The sushi itself was not too bad, but it was just like average sushi. I tried the salmon, spicy salmon roll, and the California roll. The pieces of salmon were pretty big and the spicy salmon was decent. The pricing is a little different from Sushi Land though and not as appealing. For instance, the Sushi Land seared salmon or eel are a $1.50 a plate, but in Tengu, these are $2 plates. Also, I'm not sure if they make any special sushi plates that are not included in their given menu - however, I may come back at a better time when they have more food on the belt to check. If for some reason I have he need for some cheap sushi, I would consider eating here again...if it is open OR if I don't feel like making the trip to Sushi Land instead. read more

The staff are friendly, they may not come around often to check if you need something, but if you ever need anything you can let the sushi chefs know. The WORST sushi place I have ever been to. Seriously no joke. The service is compete crap. And the belt has all the same things in the same spot so for example 5 salmon in a row then 5 cucumber rolls in a row etc so you are waiting forever for sown thing to come around. The sushi: the worst! We ordered a California roll which is super simple. 3 ingredients. Cucumber, crab, and avocado. Our rolls didn't even have that! It had the orange eggs (which they say is common? Uhh no?) and the grossest imitation crab I've ever had. No avocado. No cucumber. So they had to take it off the bill when the waiter said "oh ya that looks a little light" ya think? THEN we had ordered gyoza and it never came out so we said nevermind and they STILL tried to charge us? And when I told her about it she laughed and said "oh yeah" This place is the worst. The sushi is good for its price and also compared to many conveyor belt sushi places. Nothing too outstanding but it works on a night when you are just looking for some food for dinner. I took two stars out because the glass of water I got had lipstick stain on it and that got me thinking how clean the rest of the utensils were. Another thing was that there was a line for people to get seated by the time I left and the two servers were so busy getting people signed up that they neglected the people waiting to get their bill. They could have just left a sign up sheet out so people could write their names down and the servers could give out the bills to speed things up. At least something to think of during rush hour. Bottom line, if you are looking for a place for simple quick food, the place is a good choice. But don't count on a speedy check out during lunch or dinner hours, or when you need to get to the movie quickly! read more

3 stars (with a potential for 4.5 stars if they upped their service)! We stopped by Tengu Sushi for the first time when we were running errands around Northgate Mall. There seemed to always be a line, especially during peak dinner time but the wait wasn't actually too long. in fact, if there were more waiters/waitresses, we probably wouldn't have to wait, as majority of the wait was more on them cleaning up the table and turning the table up with new plates/setting. The quality of the sushi was pretty good. We got to sit right in front of the main sushi making area and, unlike other conveyor sushi places that use machines to pump out rices in bites, i appreciated that all the sushi dish were hand-rolled/shaped. The sushi quality also seemed to be better than other places, too. For example, a veggie tempura sushi didn't just have fried green beans in it like what other cheap conveyor sushi would have. Instead, they also added Japanese pumpkin (kabocha) tempura in it, too. Likewise, the 7-spiced seared tuna was tasty, too. Our major drawback was on wait service. It took forever for them to clean/turn the table. It took forever for them to refill our empty cups of hot tea. It also took forever for us to get the bill and just simply get any of their attention. I believe the chef/sushi making area is doing a great job, but this place really needs to add at least another wait service person to really ensure the customers aren't ignored. read more

I think I have found my favorite kaiten sushi restaurant in the Seattle. I have been to Tengu Sushi about five times now and the quality of the fish and the service has always been consistently good. My husband and I always come here before we see a movie since the restaurant is literally a few steps away from the Thornton Place movie theatre. They have a good selection of sushi and non-sushi food itmes and the price is just right. I really like their nigiri choices, the rolls and their cooked items. One my favorite cooked items is their chicken karaage. They also have dessert items on the conveyor belt like green tea cheesecake. It's not the best but it's not bad either. It reminds me of one of those jello cheesecakes but green tea flavor. read more

Let me start by saying I know what I'm getting myself into when I decide to eat at a conveyor belt sushi place. I don't expect excellent service and I certainly do not expect the best quality fish. With that being said, both the service and the food here fell significantly below my expectations. BF and I sat down, told the waitress we would like some water. She didn't drop them off until 15 minutes later, when we were half-way through our meal. The place wasn't even full, so it's not like they were that busy. I was parched, but there was no way for me to flag anyone down because no one attended to anyone on our side for quite some time. The rice here on the rolls is not how sushi rice should be. Too crumbly and not quite the right texture. Sushi Maru in the mall is way better, in my opinion. read more

So this is in response to the review left by Tanya S: First off, there were several movies that had just ended at the theatre that is located in the same plaza, which accounts for the many folks who had to wait for the tables/counter space to be bussed (as my boyfriend would say, patience is a virtue). Tanya S should be glad that she caught the tail end of that peak instead of walking into the midst of it all like we did. Either way, not having a reservation and only waiting 15 minutes because they were short staffed is worth the wait since the sushi was very good. You should have seen the hustle and bustle of the waitresses...and the swe This also coinsides with the fact that the conveyor belt was so empty...again, if this annoys you, don't eat dinner during peak hours at a restaurant that is not even 60 days into it's opening. And for goodness sakes, be brave and just order with your waiter! It only took the sushi chefs 5 minutes to make our order, which is way faster than sitting down at a regular sushi restaurant. And lastly, of course the conveyor belt will have crumbs on it - it's a restaurant serving food (like crunchy CA rolls) and guests tend to drop a few crumbs here and there... like I said before, you went during a peak time, expect it, and if you don't like it, ask the waitress to clean it up. The Hubs and I go here before or after practically every movie we see at Thornton Regal--usually twice a month. It's a great place for fast, affordable, good sushi off of a conveyor belt. Our favorites are the Salmon Skin Roll, Salmon and Avocado Roll, Avocado Roll, and Yellowtail Nigiri. Also, the servers are friendly and efficient and we like hearing them speak Japanese to each other and the sushi chefs. Our only complaint is that sometimes the kitchen is a little slow with the made-to-order hot dishes. The Chicken Teriyaki is quite good though. read more

There's something homey about Tengu that I really like, although I can't quite put my finger on it. It's super cheap, decent sushi and they offer wine, which is great! But since it is so inexpensive, you're unfortunately not paying for the best service. Every time I come here, the service is really awkward and the server always forgets something or fails to check in with our table. So be prepared to be frustrated with the service, but not let down by the cheap sushi! read more

Unfortunately, ths place is getting worse almost every time I come in! :( I really enjoyed the opening, that first night I came it was very lively, there was a lot of sushi and variety on the conveyor belt and I thought it would only get better. BUT, it has been the opposite my last couple of visits. If you get there during the week at the lunch hour, you will have no variety whatsoever. The same couple of rolls will pass you by and you will be dissapointed. Before I completely take the stars off, I'll give dinner another shot. But until then it will keep getting worse. It's a typical sushi conveyor joint. The sushi is on par with other sushi joints in Seattle. Not bad. The service is good -- much better than Blue C. The atmosphere is so-so. It's clean. They don't have much of a selection though, but you can order straight from the sushi chefs, which is pretty cool if you ask me. And the chefs seem a lot more qualified that the chefs in other sushi conveyor joints. A needed addition to the North End. I ordered a sushi platter via the phone 2 days before I required it and was pleased that it was just being finished up when I arrived at the appointed time. I feared it being made up and refrigerated but was happy that it was freshly made. I got the Matsu platter that has 73 pieces of roll and nigiri and it fed 5 of us with no problem at all. Everything was very tasty and the fish on the nigiri was tender and delicious. I'm very pleased with the quality and value of the take-out. With tax and tip I was still under $20 per person which for sushi is a steal. read more

We have eaten here for years, and we aren't happy with the changes under new ownership. The portions are smaller and the variety is more limited on the conveyor. We ate there tonight, and the service was non existent. The annoying music is geared to twenty somethings (I'd guess), and there is now a TV on the wall, which is weird because this isn't a sports bar. And I don't know who can see it because of its location. A sad day for us as we will have to search for a new sushi place. read more

This place is one of the better kaiten style or conveyor belt sushi I have been to. Though around NY we don't have any good ones. The sushi was fairly decent quality considering the price. Each plate has a different price associated with it, ranging from $1.50 to $5.00. They have more expensive ones but too but they were rare. We arrived at 8:30 pm on a Friday so we had a small wait but nothing to bad. You can also order sushi instead of grabbing them off the train. We had one of their specials with seared salmon on top that was amazing. Most of the sushi was good. A couple were hit or miss but that's part of the fun of being able to try a bit of everything! read more

The worst service I have ever had. Waitstaff could have cared less that we were there, ordered a drink, never got it, wife ordered a drink, never got it. We never saw our waitress again, until I had to get up and ask for the check. Thankfully someone else had brought us water. You couldn't even do that, or bother to bring the check until I got up, and after waiting for you too finish goofing around with the other waitresses, had to ask for the check. I've heard good things about this place, so I was excited to finally try it out. I don't know what I was expecting but I was taken aback by the interior when I stepped inside. It felt a bit empty/barren/gray. I definitely wouldn't come here for ambiance. Althought there was plenty of room at the bar, my friends and I wanted to be seated in a booth, so we ended up waiting for about 10 minutes. The wasabi was good--had the right amount of kick and sushi was fresh! We ordered with our server as well as the sushi chef, and I can't say that their service was very speedy. We didnt mind though, as we were all happy with our sushi choices. I loved the spicy salmon roll and the tempura roll looked delicious! The seaweed wrap (nori) for the gunkans were crispy and everything overall was tasty. Their menu is modest and price is very affordable. I'll be back for their fresh sushi. read more

Decent spot to stop at for a quick sushi fix. It's not going to be cheap though, but it's sushi after all. Conveniently located right next to the movie theater at Northgate. I have never waited for a table, but I also have never gone during busy weekend dinner rush time. Last time I went, it was a Monday or Tuesday night for dinner. The restaurant was probably 70% full so we were seated immediately. The sushi chefs made sushi quickly, so the belt always felt full of options. But service was slow which I didn't really understand because there's not much serving requirements at a sushi restaurant. My friend and I ordered it two hot menu items, and we made it through like 75% of our meal before the plates even came out. One of the plates was served just above room temperature. Their unagi is delicious, their green tea cheesecake is also good though I didn't have at this time. The edamame was room temperature. Make sure you watch the plate colors when you take them off the belt. We spent over $30ea for our meals, which included two sodas. Unfortunately they charge you by the can so there are no free refills... For that amount of money, I would've rather just made the drive to downtown and eaten gourmet. But I would maybe come back next time I had a sushi fix just because it's so convenient. read more

I ordered albacore (2.50 i think) yellowtail (2.75) croquettes (4.25) an avacado roll (1.50) and a piece of green tea cheesecake (2.50) The food is way overpriced..... i know sushi is expensive, and yeah it is about the same price as Blue C Sushi, maybe a bit cheaper, but still this is way overpriced for what you get, especially the hot food. The croquettes I can get the same thing for $2 at another place, not to metion the sushi was tiny. The yellowtail was pretty good, but the albacore wasn't that great. The rolls looked thrown together... maybe this was just a bad day or something, cuz I mean this does have an almost 4 star rating, but I was not impressed and I probably won't be back. I will say this in thier favor, the green tea cheesecake is pretty good, and it is amusing trying to eat it with chopsticks. PS this took me a bit to find, but it's by the movie theater. I thought this place was pretty pricey for a conveyor sushi joint... then again, I'm used to Sushi Land prices where they have one dollar plates. Oh well. Cheap sushi is never that fresh anyway so I shouldn't complain too much. I ordered the tempura udon and that was super tasty, I was surprised how much tempura they had in there; one shrimp and few pieces of the sweet potato. The broth was a bit salty, but the noodles were fine. $4.95 per bowl. I probably wouldn't come here if I wasn't here for a movie. They do honor a 10% discount if you show your ticket stub, which I didn't know about before. We had about 6 plates and the total came out to be around $20 so not too bad, but that was probably because of the discount. I miss being able to eat inside but all in due time :-) Just a warning for those ordering take out: the online menu does not represent how big the rolls actually are. I ordered so many rolls not realizing how much food I got! Haha but this, of course, it not a bad thing For example, the pictures show there are 2 pieces per order and that is so not the case! Tengu is a perfectly serviceable place if you are in the area or going to a movie and want a quick sushi pig out. Actually, the sushi is pretty good, the selection is good for a kaiten sushi place, and the prices are decent. The service was pretty bad, though. We actually felt bad for the wait staff because they could do with a good manager. There was no division of labor, so the same people are doing everything from hosting to bussing to taking drink orders and not doing any of it well. It took a while on a busy Friday night for them to clean tables, and it took a good 10 minutes after we sat down to get water, much less drinks (which I had to flag down a waiter and ask for). Good thing the food is mostly going around on a conveyor belt and you can just grab it! We didn't dare order from the hot menu, though, since we had a movie to catch and had no confidence the food would come out in time. She has short brown curly hair. - My friend and I asked for sauces for each of us, but she only brought out 1. We asked for another, then she slammed it down on the table. - The table behind us were given napkins that she dropped on the floor. - She never directly spoke to anyone in the lobby. The waiting area was full, and she would look at the floor and say "go ahead and follow me". Everyone there stood up. Then she says "oh not you". What? - She brought us our hot kitchen food very late and then it was cold. Twice. Maybe you guys should hire someone with experience because she is not it.
