This is one of those places that I'm always afraid to reveal, hoping they don't get crushed by crowds of new fans, buuut.... I LOVE this place! Quiet and unassuming, their food is some of the best I've had. Their teriyaki is great, and definitely a cut above the more bland and thin 'traditional' Seattle style. Manna's meat dishes are terrific also, but my all time fave is their perfect YAKISOBA! This classic Japanese dish is sometimes difficult to find at restaurants, I'm guessing because it's so prevalent in the culture that it's seen as almost too common to fix at a restaurant - maybe equivalent to PB&J in the US. But THIS IS COMFORT FOOD extraordinaire! The blending of flavors (meat/veggie choices here!), crisp veggies, perfectly cooked noodles, and delicious sides included! There's a 'test dish' in every cuisine that is often simple, but clearly demonstrates whether the cook knows what they're doing: Thailand = Pad Thai, Jewish = Matzoh ball soup, US = Burgers, China = Jook, Brazil = Feijoada, and in Japan (for me) it's clearly Yakisoba. What better way to use time before a movie (right across the street from Aurora Oak Tree) than with some delicious teriyaki? Spotless restaurant, excellent food and great customer service. When I noticed there was no tofu on the menu, the owner checked with his wife and said they could make either tofu teriyaki or tofu yakisoba. I went with the yaki and was rewarded with a hearty plate of veggies,noodles and crispy on the outside tofu nuggets that were really yummy. My stomach is jumping for joy and my saliva is gushing off my tongue as I think about such a delicious place. Yes, the portions are huge and enough for two people! As you enter, they nicely greet you and expect you to know what you want. I ordered the combo of chicken teriyaki & pork skewer ( I think it's combo #4, about $10) so that I can try both. There was someone that put in I think 3 or 4 orders before me. The wait is about 15 minutes, although it feels like forever. She impressively is done cooking all of our orders. They put my food in a bag and dayum is it heavy!!! There's so much food. The rice fills up a little more than half of the box. With at least 4 layers of chicken teriyaki. Yes, 4 layers with hella rice. Then there's the salad overflowing in the corner with the bleu cheese sauce & pork skewer on top. I think the pork skewer is tasty. It's a little hard but tasty like homemade bbq. I like it because it reminds me of my family's bbq food. It's good but not worth the extra $2 or $3 it was. I think it should've been cheaper. The teriyaki was delicious. I like how it was perfectly marinated. It was sweet, not too salty, but also moist and tender. Lots and LOTS of teriyaki sauce that she also coated on top before closing the take out box. Yes, and the hot sauce was tasty. The salad was okay, not my biggest fan and I didn't like the bleu cheese. Overall, fast and nice service. Great food, tasted so comforting. Its a little unusual for a Seattle teriyaki place to not offer tofu on their menu...the only vegetarian option on the menu is mixed vegetables, which is basically a huge pile of cabbage and one scoop of rice. This ma & pa spot is so welcoming and delicious! The owner was very personable as well! They have one of the best Katsu I've ever had. The chicken was so soft & tender, plus the breading was just at the perfect amount. My boyfriend had the chicken teriyaki- he also said that the meat is very soft and tender & the sauce is sweet and savory! The portions are also large for the price! This is the serious teriyaki place in the ugly brown wrapper. The hardest of the hardcore, if you will, in the plainest of packaging. It's gnarly enough outside that I almost didn't park. It's a gritty stretch of Aurora here, and the outside of this place is not doing anything to make it seem any less gritty. In all fairness, the inside of this place is...also not doing anything to make it seem any less gritty. Dark and dingy, you have to step over the mop bucket to get into the restroom, and they're playing that Michael Bolton station that every yaki joint plays. You really feel like you need to shower after realizing you've been listening to Michael Bolton. None of this matters. Because the food here is frickin' awesome--especially for the price. The service is quick, responsive, efficient, and not especially cheerful. You can tell they get into lulls here, and they get into big rushes here. When I was here, it was an older couple that appeared to own the joint; he cooking and she cashiering. They take plastic, and you may tip on it. The food is what counts. The gyoza were fresh and flavorful and not too doughy. The tallboy can of iced tea was...a can of iced tea. The grilled chicken yaki was ACTUAL BREAST MEAT that had clearly just been chopped to order and had REAL GRILL MARKS on it. It was still juicy and actually tasted like grilled chicken. The "extra spicy" turned out to be hot sauce ladled on top, which quickly turned to steam that exited rapidly through my scalp. You get a bed of calrose rice under your breasts ("Rice is great when you're really hungry and want two thousand of something" -- Mitch Hedberg), and some iceberg mix next to them. The protein is so good here that the empty starch and "greens" are just a nice counterpoint for texture. Forget that they might need to add anything. Better still, I wasn't even in the ballpark of the best dish on the menu. The short ribs are what make people do cartwheels here. I took my bag to go and went down the street to watch the NCAAs. I felt bad about torturing everybody with the smell, and threw the bag away outside when I was done. Better still, the latecomer to the group, apropos of nothing, asked if I had heard of "that teriyaki place up the street with the killer short ribs." This was long AFTER the bag and smell were gone. Turns out these guys already own the block, and I didn't even know it until Yelp told me (just hours before I heard the word on the street). For $12 (including a pint and a half of tea), this is gourmet cuisine. read more

We were visiting from out of town and searching for a place to eat for dinner. We decided to pick up dinner from Manna Deli & Teriyaki based on their menu and existing ratings. We were not disappointed. We ordered the Mongolian Beef, gyoza, California rolls, shrimp fried rice, and teriyaki chicken. This was some of the best take out food we have had. The portions were very generous and the staff were very friendly. If we are ever staying in the area again, we will definitely be paying another visit to have another meal. I stumbled upon Manna Deli & Teriyaki through a friend of mine who lived right around the corner from it on Aurora. I had never even heard of it before he brought me there, proclaiming it as one of his favorite teriyaki joints of all time. My wife then helped us make a life-changing discovery, asking me to order kimchi fried rice for her if it was available. We called the order in and the lady who answered said kimchi fried rice wasn't on the menu, but that she would make it for us. When we arrived at the restaurant, she emphasized that she was making it "special" for us and that it was certainly the best around. Her claim proved to be true. She came out with a RIDICULOUSLY heavy takeout container full of kimchi fried rice, flavored to perfection with spicy cabbage and good portions of smoky pork. She told us she had made enough for everyone to try. I didn't realize she meant she had made enough for the entire Beacon Hill neighborhood to try, though, cause we had leftovers for DAYS. Be careful about bringing leftovers to work cause the stuff, as you might expect, packs a punch. If kimchi fried rice strikes your fancy, know that you can only order it at night - a friend went and tried to get it for lunch and the lady said she only makes it for dinner. The teriyaki there is fantastic as well. The portions are huge, so you get serious bang for your buck. The teriyaki sauce is fantastic - it has a texture and body to it that allows it to coat and stick to its intended target just enough, unlike many teriyaki sauces that just drip off the meat/rice and end as a puddle in the bottom of your takeout box. Me and a group of people ordered Togo around dinner time and we had to wait almost an hour for all of our food to be ready. I get that there were other people in front of us, but that's a long wait for a Togo order... When we finally got our food, we tasted it and it wasn't that good. Especially the spicy chicken and the side salad. The chicken was spicy but the sauce wasn't that good. The dressing for the side salad was basically just mayo. It was thick and didn't taste good at all. The portion was pretty big which was nice. I don't think I'll be coming back here again though. read more

We ordered the chicken teriyaki, chicken breast teriyaki and Cali rolls (they were the advertised special). I loved that our food arrived with nice presentation! The utensils and tables were clean and the woman who took our order pleasant. Surprisingly the rolls were fresh and tasty! Even when eating left overs later that evening, they were really good! My chicken breast was thin the way I love it and their sauce wasn't too sweet. It was heavy on the ginger which is the way I enjoy my teriyaki. My hunny enjoyed his as well. This is not a 4 star place. However, the gentlemen who took my order was pleasant and of good cheer, hence 3 stars and not 2. The food is nothing special. I had the chicken teriyaki with gyoza and I have had way better dishes of the same thing elsewhere. I was only in the area for a workshop at North Seattle College and I do not live in this area locally so I cannot recommend anything close by. I can go by what I know and if you are looking for a really good teriyaki place, this one may not be your best bet. If you choose to come here, you will at least be greeted pleasantly and they will steam your gyoza instead of frying it if you request. After trying several teriyaki places in Seattle, I've become a regular at Manna. Why? Everything I've eaten there is delicious, their portions are large, and kind people run the place. I typically order their combo-number-one: chicken teriyaki, rice, salad, your choice of three gyoza or an egg roll, and a canned soda. The chicken is flame-broiled, juicy, and served in a portion large enough to feed two; it usually comes sauce-free, but for to-go orders they'll give you a drizzle of sweet teriyaki sauce and a container of sauce before you leave. The salad is of the crunchy iceberg variety, topped with shredded carrots and croutons. Their gyoza is deep-fried fresh. They also sell a plate with fried prawns instead of gyoza--I enjoy it a little more, but I appreciate the deal you get with combo-number-one. The healthy teriyaki wrap you see advertised storefront is, essentially, a plate of teriyaki (salad and all) sprinkled with mild cheddar cheese and wrapped in a flour tortilla. It is delicious, and it is the size of a baby in a blanket. Alright...that's enough. Try it for yourself. We used to love this place but since the new ownership has taken over it has slowly declined over the years in quality of food and customer service. The woman that works there is delightful and lovely; always helpful. The gentleman is generally rude and unreasonable, knowing little about customer service. Usually we call in our order and take it home. We have continued to go here, but as the food declines and we find more rice and less protein we are now searching for a new place. read more

I LOVE the other Manna Teriyaki locations so I was really weirded out about my experience here. I placed an order for pick-up, and asked that instead of salad they substitute a side of steamed veggies (which they do for me at the other location for no additional charge). The woman on the phone hung up on me Then I arrived and it soon became clear that they made the order wrong. The older gentlemen said they didn't have veggies even though it's listed on the menu so I pointed this out to him. And he said that broccoli was not a veggie. Hmmmmm not sure about that one... I usually like to take a few bites and then take the rest home which is why I order it to go. When I asked for a napkin (because there were none on the table) the man handed me a few and then this very angry lady emerged from the kitchen (who must have been the woman who took my order on the phone) and literally SNATCHED the napkins out of my hand and shouted "No!" to this poor man! I felt so bad for him! I hope he doesn't have to deal with that kind of abuse on a regular basis. Then she pushed through another customer who was in line, went to the bathroom and tried to give me paper towels that came from a basket on top of the toilet. Gross!! Kindness and manners go a long way in the food and beverage industry. There were none here and also going into a bathroom, not washing your hands and trying to give a customer a dirty paper towel in lieu of a napkin is unacceptable. So far this is the only Teriyaki place around Aurora/Greenwood area that I like. The prices are just right, the lady that works there is very nice. She doesn't speak much english, but she is very courteous and is fast with getting the order down. The portions are absolutely insane, too. I order the regular sized chicken teriyaki and it's definitely two meals worth...I can't imagine ordering the larger size. This place is also the only place that serves a salad with their teriyaki that I actually eat. Usually, I will just say "no salad" at other places, because the idea of a plain iceberg lettuce "salad" with italian dressing is never very appetizing to me. But this one is actually really tasty and compliments the rest of the meal well. A couple of months ago I went there and she said to me "Thank you for business...please come back. Business is slow". That broke my heart, because this place is so good. So PLEASE if you have eaten there and like it, go back! For a teriyaki joint, this place really is as good as it gets. The portions are huge and the quality of the ingredients is very good. I always order the chicken breast teriyaki, which consists of skewered hunks of nicely grilled white meat chicken. You get three generous kabobs, a ton of rice doused in sweet teriyaki sauce perfection, and a separate container of iceberg salad mix with ranch on the side. Yeah I prefer the usual sweet mayo-like dressing, but whatever. You don't eat teriyaki for the amazing side salad. The meat is where it's at, and you won't be disappointed with what you get at Manna. I really wanted to like this place, and I gave it a couple chances. It has potential to be that place with huge portions and "quirky" staff just like the other reviews make it out to be. I just don't really have a desire to go back again. I had the combo #2 both times. The lady at the counter said "The 'people on the internet', they like #2" The first time I tried it, I ordered it with "spicy sauce on the side" and the chicken came out grilled with no sauce added to it. The portion was huge, and the beef kabob was delicious, but the chicken was charred and mostly tasteless. I didn't care for the spicy sauce. I ordered it again tonight, and when the lady at the counter asked if I wanted spicy I said "No, not spicy" hoping that this time the meat would be cooked in some kind of sauce. After about 15 minutes, instead what I got was a dish completely covered in spicy sauce. When I told her I asked for it not to be spicy she actually got offended, huffed loudly, and said "NO! You said spicy!" I insisted again that was not what I ordered, and she took it away, but not before insisting again that she thought I was wrong, and had actually told her I wanted it spicy. After about another 15 minutes, she came out and dropped a plate in front of me (without saying a word, and looking at me angrily). It looked almost like the first time I tried it (plain grilled chicken) but this time the beef kabob didn't have sauce and was undercooked. When it comes right down to it, a huge portion of something lacking flavor isn't worth it. Particularly when the service it comes with is terrible, slow, and rude. The lovely family that runs this place is fantastic. The short ribs are out of this world (being from hawaii, I know my korean and japanese style short ribs). Also they have the best home made kimchee. The wife/mother makes it from scratch and it rocks! The sheer size of the Kalbi order is huge, easily two meals (I'm a big eater and it's still two meals). I think the woman behind the counter did the cooking, cleaning, busing and worked the cashier. It was like she was super grandma. I ordered the Chicken Teriyaki and Gyoza combination. I mistakenly told her what I wanted and she laughed at me and said, "No what you want is a Combination Number 1." Sure. She rings it up on the cash register, doesn't tell me how much it is, I hand her a ten and she counts out some change and hands it back, still not telling me how much it is nor how much my change was. I asked her why there was so little change (the meal is $7.99) and she says, "Come over here and I'll show you" and tries to get me to come around the counter like she's proving something. I say never mind I'm not going to worry about it and go sit down. About 20 minutes later my food comes out. Not a word from the lady about the wait or anything. In a word, HORRIBLE service! I finally get back to my office and the food itself is good, very large portions. I would never go back though, the service was that bad. What used to be the best teriyaki joint in Seattle has now joined the indistinguishable legions of mediocre ones after a change of ownership. The place looks the same and has the same menu, but the food has changed dramatically. No more big juicy pieces of char-grilled chicken, delicious spicy sauce, homemade ranch, or huge scoops of steamed rice. The line started getting long behind me so I rang the bell. The prices are higher than the picture someone posted of the menu. Got a #3 combo and a water: $10.45. I thought that was kinda steep for a teriyaki plate. Took a while for the food to come out. It looked pretty good. The serving of rice was kinda small. The serving if chicken was really big.
