What I tried- Sushi Roll (i'm obsessed with it) Bento Box Matcha Tiramisu ( sooo good ) Yuzu Mochi The desserts are made in house and is fresh They have a lot of options in Japanese cuisine - both traditional and new! Note: It's a take out place, there is no dine in option

Sushi Combo Set, served with miso soup

I first heard of Modern not because of the main courses but because of their mochi. They are freshly made and pillow-y delicious. Yum! The restaurant is pretty small. For the time being, they are not having dine in, and they are allowing one party inside at a time to order, choose from the bakery case, etc. You can pre-order baked goods as well as the meals. The menus are on the window, so you can read from there before entering to order. Hamachi Kama Set - 3.5 Stars They serve the Hamachi Kama with four little pieces of CA roll, veggies, edamame, and miso soup. I believe the price for the set is $20. It's spendy for a Hamachi Kama. A collar at most other places is much less than that. The extras are not a lot of value. The food is a normal good, but not extraordinary. The cost is high. Sushi Combo with Miso soup, $20 - 3.5 Stars Salmon belly, salmon, hamachi, tuna, albacore and 6 pieces of CA roll. Same assessment - The food is a normal good, but not extraordinary. The cost is somewhat on the higher side, but not as outright high. Spicy Yellowtail Roll, $10 - 3.5 Stars Yellowtail, avocado, and shiso leaf topped with chili pepper, spicy mayo, and green onion. Rainbow Rolls, $13.50 - 3.5 Stars Crab salad and cucumber topped with an assortment of sashimi and avocado Still the same assessment. Both rolls are pretty good. They are also rather small. Other "neighborhood" level of sushi restaurants have bigger portions. ^^Food/entrée wise, if I live nearby, I would order from them. But I wouldn't travel there for it. Pastries, identified as from Setsuko Pastries Strawberry Mochi, $4.50 (I think) - 5 Stars This mochi is magnificent! I would travel again for this easily. This is a must order. Snow Beauty cheesecake, aka Japanese style no bake cheesecake with green tea (Matcha), $6 - 4.5 Stars I asked for the most matcha flavor dessert, and the staff recommended this one. It was good! This is more of a whipped smooth kind. Good, nearly great. The staff is helpful with all my questions. I ordered ahead, and the food was on time, ready for pickup.

I ordered takeaway and very easy to pick up the food, just schedule a pickup time! Several of the rolls were outstanding, Big Bang Roll, California Roll, tuna roll - delicious! Shumai - not bad; gyozas - good. Highly recommend!

I can't remember the exact rolls I ordered, but I was pleasantly surprised that we have a delicious sushi spot in the neighborhood! The flavor was delicious and the prices affordable. Sushi can be very hit or miss if ordering delivery but Modern Japanese did not disappoint. I would love to do dine in, but I'm not sure if they're still only open for delivery and take out. Either way, they're worth the drive!

Ordered some sushi from Modern through Grubhub. I tried the crunchy backed salmon dinner and shrimp tempura roll dinner. The sushi was okay. It was $25

    Salmon collar bento

Ordered the salmon collar for lunch and it was delicious, along with all the other sides. Service was friendly. Take out only restaurant. Would definitely recommend

    Rainbow Poke Dinner

This place is kind of small, have a nice backside for couples of tables maybe 2-3.. I was recommend by family in Seattle to come to try this place, we ordered a few rolls and a rainbow poke to try. The sushi rolls were just ok, nothing very memorable ( I just remember how I didn't like the lion king, the cooked salmon in it was very fishy and combined with the shiso leaves gave me a weird taste) Their rainbow Poké was ok, I felt their fish were a little slimmy and fishy tho.

Stopped by to picked up dessert for a friend's birthday. Ended up picking up the tiramisu and matcha dessert cheesecake for her and the mochi's for me. The mochi's I have to say were AMAZING...the texture and right amount of sweetness just melted in my mouth and I can see going back to pick up more. Will have to ask my friend what she thought of her desserts. I have tried the tiramisu before when a friend brought over and remembered it as pretty darn delicious. The gentlemen who greeted me at the store was warm & welcoming & helpful. He gave me great suggestions on desserts and also informed me of their patio availability and happy hour info. He definitely encompassed what great customer service and care means, and was a great representative for the shop in my opinion. I look forward to stopping by in the future to try their food menus as well as pick up more mochis

Shrimp tempura udon was not good.

I didn't have a good experience at this restaurant despite the other people high ratings. The server seem like he wasn't experience in the F&B industry and the food was lacking, especially my tempura udon. The only reason I am giving it two stars is because the price is reasonable, the staff was pleasant, and it was a cute looking restaurant.

Cute little restaurant in phinney ridge. It's nice to have a Japanese place in this neighborhood. I came in 10 minutes before closing for lunch. $14.99 for a lunch special sashimi salad. It definitely wasn't what I was expecting. I too had high expectations for this restaurant. They gave me a box filled with bagged greens, 7 pieces of fish, and a tiny 1/4 filled sauce cup. Really?! No wasabi and just a little sauce for this salad? I wasn't happy at all. I couldn't even go in to complain. Please be more generous with your salad dressing next time.

The subtlety of flavors and the texture of the nigiri selection never ceases to satisfy. The owner literally stands by his product of the other side of the counter, calmly Manufacturing Bliss. I recommend the Omakase selection, but if you want to start out with just a simple roll, try the Stone Way roll and splurge on the Cucumber Unagi appetizer. Located in a pretty central part of Fremont, it offers a lot in its location. Gas Works park is only about a 10 - 15 minute walk from here which is great! Street parking may be difficult so I suggest looking at the the nearby neighborhoods for parking. The restaurant itself is quite small so I suggest a reservation if you are planning to visit during a busy weekend night which we did. The menu offers a great selection of entrees and we decided to share the tuna dinner and the salmon dinner which came full with nigiri, a roll and sashimi. We also shared a roll in additional to the salmon and tuna dinner. Each entree was perfect to share because there were two of each kind of nigiri on each plate. We were very happy with the quality of the fish and I could not decide which entree I preferred more. The service was not super memorable but I do not remember being unhappy with it either. The price point was quite reasonable for the quality. I was very happy and will be back!

I wasn't feeling like going all in for all sashimi dish so I went for the seared salmon bowl. TLDR they allow seared salmon bowl for takeouts now. I assumed it's still a dine-in option only dish because the menu on the wall and the website explicitly says so. But the staff told me I can take it to go. Not wanting to stay out until it gets dark to bus back home, I happily chose to take my food to go. They definitely should update their menu wall and the website though. It can't be that hard. The food was good. I also had the veggie croquette which was delightfully crispy and flavorful. I also had the side curry, which was surprisingly generous amount for under $5. Seared salmon bowl was good but the salmon pieces were really thin. It looked kind of speckled on top of bed of rice and it felt like I had too much rice for the amount of fish they topped it with. They also mentioned yuzu kosho as part of seasoning combination but I could barely taste it. The sauce that came with the bowl had like a ponzu base I believe, and that went well with the food. I would come back if I'm desperate for Japanese food and I don't want to cook it myself, but it was overall kind of underwhelming experience.

Katsu is one of the finest fried items known to humankind, and even though eating fried food makes me feel like I've been punched in the stomach recently, I was willing to take a rocket to the gut for some stellar katsu and fries. Daruma has the set up of a no-frills establishment that knows they're going to be churning out orders. The kiosk order system isn't that common in the US because it seems ridiculously unfriendly, but Japan is about efficiency with a focus on the food. They only had two people working here so it was slow, but absolutely worth it. The spicy chicken katsu was incredible. Everything that was on this sandwich had a reason for being there. The cutlet itself was incredibly juicy and crispy. The right amount of sauce was applied so as to not make the sandwich itself soggy (critical on a sandwich with fried elements), and then the cabbage on top gives it a bit of freshness. I'm pretty sure the bread was fine, but that isn't why we're here. It's a vessel for fried food. The fries seem to need a bit of work. I think they may have gotten soggy because they came in a to-go box, but the seasoning was fantastic. They also come with whatever sauce you want, and there is a plethora to choose from. I thoroughly enjoyed the spicy mayo, which I then added to the katsu sando as well. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the Fremont area.
