Walking around in the area looking for some dinner. In town for business and got back to the hotel late. Every other place was packed and I happened upon Kozue down a few blocks from where I found parking. Total "hole in the wall" vibe. Atmosphere was great, only a couple others inside. Staff were super welcoming and very helpful. I was going to sit and eat but decided I was tired enough to just take it back to the hotel and eat there and they were more than happy to accommodate the change. Got a bento box, some nigiri and a dragon roll. Was it the best I'd ever had? No. Was it bad? Definitely not! I devoured my sushi rolls and went to town on the bento. Everything was full of flavor and made well. If you're a lover of the "not so popular" like I am, I believe you'll thoroughly enjoy your time here. read more

Arrived on a Saturday evening and got seated immediately. We decided to sit outside because of the good vibes. The ambiance outside is very nice. We got two dishes: a spicy tuna bowl and an udon soup (I forget which). I always forget that "spicy tuna" is finely chopped tuna. It was good tho! Fresh avocado and other things in the bowl made it very worth it. The udon dish was also good. It was more sweet than I was wanting, though. I wish that was explained in the description of the dish. It was a busy rainy day when I came here last Saturday. And it's been a long time since I've last visited Kozue. Luckily, it's been surviving through the pandemic. A tent now surrounds the outdoor seating area and knowing where to wait was a it awkward. Walking in, you'll find an area for take out orders, but if you walk past that to the indoor seating area, you'll find a clipboard for the waiting list where you can put your name down. One of the servers noticed me and I waved back to get a table. They kindly asked me to put my name down on the waiting list. Most of the tables were full and there were not that many of them. Fortunately for me, a table just left. So I was able to get a table for 3 in the tented area. It was dinner time, so I ordered the grilled salmon teriyaki entree and an order of gyoza to start. I also got a blue fin tuna hand roll that was advertised on their specials. The rest of my party ended up ordering sushi. We also got a large hot house sake since it felt appropriate with the rainy weather. Warmed me up while listening to the sounds of the rain falling. Felt really relaxed. The salmon entree came with miso soup which was nice and cloudy. It was good for this weather too. Didn't wait too long for the food to come out. The salmon entree was very good that had 3 pieces which looked like a lot, but it was enough that it didn't feel like I was over stuffed. Came with a shredded iceberg lettuce salad which covered half of the plate. That was overdoing it for me presentation-wise and as part of the meal. Did not finish the salad that's for sure. The gyoza could've been crispier, but tasted delicious never the less. The sushi was alright. Nothing too special here, but it was good. Simple is never bad here. Service was quite good here, but I definitely think they can have more tables if they rearrange the place a bit. I do enjoy their entrees a lot over the sushi here. Incredible sushi--and they have a lot of different, fun rolls that I haven't seen at other sushi places! Everything I had was amazing, but my #1 favorite roll was the Salmon Lover's rectangle roll. I'll definitely be coming back--probably a lot. The service was also great. I really appreciated that every one of their staff was wearing a mask! We got 3 roles and some appetizers. It took so long for our food to come we changed our order to go. The house special was not edible, we threw it away. The two the roles were bad. Day 2 of escaping the center of the sun at home. I drove and another person chose Kozue, three doors down from my favorite izakaya spot (6/19/18). Chose a corner table inside with its feeble AC, but better than outdoor seating wearing too many clothes. But then, if I had stripped down to my skivvies, there would be sudden snowfall on their outdoor patio! lol Drowned in copious ice water. Tasty miso. Stuck with a hamachi roll and hotate nigiri. Chomped on the fried shrimp head, but not the eyes. Made the bad move of ordering the curry beef bowl. Decent steamed rice. Curry sauce with slivers of mushroom, no evidence of carrots, potatoes, or onions. To the sentiment of Calgon, Mashiko take me away! The thinly sliced, flavorless, overcooked shoe leather...oh I meant, beef, was dreadful. My black leather motorcycle jacket is more supple than the beef served. Takes talent to brutalize beef! Two stars for that sad protein (sushi wasn't spectacular...but then I ate some questionable kaiten sushi elsewhere yesterday!). Increased to three because the wait staff were pleasant and kept me hydrated. Went to Kozue a gazillion years ago, in prehistoric dino Yelp days. Came here for a Saturday dinner with friends. We ordered edamame, calamari stripes Katsu style, and gyoza to share. For entrees I ordered the clam chazuke kozue style (grilled rice ball with spicy clam and shrimp soup). My boyfriend ordered the Katsu curry with pork Katsu. The food got served quite fast. Food: Edamame was served warm, which was not the authentic way to do it, but I like it :) Gyoza was average, but the bean sprouts on side were delicious. The calamari Katsu tasted good with the house sauce but weird with the sweet soy sauce. My clam chazuke was disappointing. The rice ball and the soup was separated, unlike how they are served usually. That's fine, I can pour the soup over the rice. The broth itself was okay, though a bit too heavy and salty. On the menu it was said there would be shrimp in the chazuke, but I only found clams, unagi and salmon. To be honest, the soft fatty texture of unagi (eel) and salmon made them taste disgusting in soup, let alone the small bones in the fish chunks. The clams were just okay, slightly fishy and not very refreshing. The yellow radish on the side had a weird sanitizer taste in it... My boyfriend thought his curry Katsu was okay. My friends ordered salmon salad and yosenabe and rated them average too. Service was good. No mandatory tips. Won't be back though... read more

My gf and I ate nothing all day so decided to be mega fattys and ordered a ton of food here during happy hour. While the sushi was pretty expensive compared to other places in the neighborhood (like Musashi), it was fairly tasty. The Seattle roll was a bit salty but the Cali roll was awesome. We also ordered shrimp shu mai, spring rolls, and gyoza. To me, the gyoza was good but the other two apps were mediocre at best. As a main my gf ordered the shoyu ramen and I got yakisoba. I thought the yakisoba was good, not great. However, the ramen was pretty awful. Broth was bland, egg was overcooked, and chashu was chewy. We did get a matcha tea that was probably some of the best matcha I've ever had. We loved it. As far as the service goes, they were incredibly good hosts.They also passed my water test (they fill up your water without asking). Overall, food was 2.5/5 and service was 5/5 so I rated it a 3. I gave this place a second try after a bad first experience with a take out sushi order. Being aware that sushi can differ from the bar to the time it gets to the table I figured maybe I took too long in transit. I went for lunch this week and the staff was welcoming which I always appreciate from a business. The fish at the bar looked fresh but was not what was being used to serve the rolls. He had some containers with what looked like already prepped pieces to use, though I can't be sure. Either way, my salmon roll was just basic. I also had seafood ramen with miso broth that I had to season myself to a tremendous extent. The broth was bland with a fishy aroma of prefrozen seafood. A 13 dollar bowl of ramen yet I felt like I just paid for what tasted like the frozen mixed bag of seafood tossed into water, good noodles and the mildest miso flavor I ever could imagine... oh and a few prawn. Rather than glistening and appetizing, they were a bit deficient and unexciting. Bad... The ramen is to be avoided here. It's not the ramen you think of with the rich and milky pork broth and the fatty pork belly. What you get is bland like watery soup that no amount of soy sauce was able to fix, and thin dry pieces of some pork (not pork belly). It was a total shock to think instant ramen had more flavor than this. Come here for the rolls! read more

First time here and I loved it! The HH menu is also available on the weekends, def try it out if you get the chance. We were seated inside and fortunately they allow one party inside. There were plenty of people seated outside by 5:30, I recommend calling ahead for reservations or arriving early. My partner and I enjoyed the white fish sashimi with ponzu sauce (not pictured). For drinks we got the sencha matcha tea that's $5 for a bottle, super refreshing! Next we ordered the rectangle sushi, Salmon lovers--the roll is paired with this white creamy sauce. Honestly this was also refreshing and this was one of the most aesthetically pleasing rolls I've ordered. My partner ordered a tempura bento box and the tempura was on point; the batter was cooked perfectly and the California rolls that came with it were huge. I ordered the chazuke dish, this was paired with a onigiri and a very strong broth with clams, octopus, cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, and salmon (?). The soup is very salty but you're supposed to pour some onto the onigiri and everything just meelllltsss in your mouth. I finally got a chance to try this place! I'm glad to see it's still there. It's been there for years, but I had never gone. Well, it was delicious! I had a yummy lunch with grilled chicken and salmon teriyaki, rice, salad, and miso, all well-priced and satisfying (the onigiri I ate for dinner). The service was impeccable, and I got to practice my Japanese. The teriyaki was a little sweet, but more savory, not sticky-sweet like other places do teriyaki, and it went well with the grilled chicken and soft salmon. The salad was fresh and the dressing light. I thought the lunch was nicely priced at $12 (the onigiri was only $4 more). I would have liked a little more salmon in the onigiri, but otherwise I really enjoyed it all. Came here for happy hour. We only planned on having five plates but everything was so good that we ended up ordering two more. We started with two spicy salmon hand rolls, which were excellent: buttery fresh pieces of salmon with just a touch of spicy mayo. Next came the pork gyoza. Kyla thinks of herself as some sort of potsticker connoisseur, but these gyoza met her lofty standards. They were crisp, hot, fresh and meaty. Next came the fish and chips. There were three small strips of white fish fried in a flavorful curry tempura batter. This dish came with tartar sauce and a small side of fried yam cubes. Our fifth dish was the Japanese shiu mai, which had a similar filling to Takoyaki, but with shrimp. At this point we asked for the happy hour menu back and proceeded to order the Takoyaki and the albacore poke. The octopus dumplings were perfect; I especially appreciated them laying off of the bonito flakes. Some restaurants just dump a bunch on with their Takoyaki and the flavor is completely overpowering. I don't recommend the ginger pork though, it was also bland. But besides the food, the atmosphere is really nice, warm and cozy. And the dishes were very traditional, which contributed to a better experience overall. The service was decently good too. However the food was definitely overpriced for the quality of it. They also have HH Friday and Saturday for a couple hours. $3.50 plates...yes please! $5 for large Sapporo...woo hoo! No arguments here. The food is OK...I will return to try some other tempting items and see if I have better luck. My grilled mussles...OK..a bit chewy overall. Salmon skin roll...this was their HH roll of the day. While it tasted fine, I had never had salmon skin before. SUPER crispy and nearly ripped up my mouth. I dissected it a bit before eating more. Spicy Beef - flavor overall was decent but waaaaay too many onions. More onions than beef which was disappointing. All in all plenty of food for under $20. Can't complain. Staff was great, prompt, and friendly. There is outdoor seating for when weather is a bit nicer. Indoors space is limited but is cozy and the decor reminds me a bit of old school Japanese ramen or sushi joints. You can't beat the prices here that's for sure! read more

Fantastic price for great food. The menu is massive for a Japanese restaurant. Sushi, ramen, traditional Japanese sides and noodle/fish/meat entrees. Lovers of Japanese food can enjoy a nice meal, while kids and California-roll only eaters will have lots of options. Small restaurant, so we always assume we are sitting out on the patio. The patio is covered and heated - so totally fine in the rain and cooler weather. The staff are fantastic and kind. This has been a "once a week" place for us for years. read more

This place is not bad, but in comparison to the other Asian restaurants this place could use some work. We usually come for happy hour because everything on their menu is $4. I got the "happy roll" which was a salmon tempura sushi roll and that was pretty good. I also got the crispy spring roll and takoyaki. The only issue I had with these two was that they were very "doughy" and it took away a lot of the flavor. The service however was very good and everyone there is always very friendly! read more

Meh. It's a'ight. They have some great looking outdoor seating and some happy hour food and drink specials, but few of those things are things that I'd normally order. The takoyaki was pretty good. Their $1 side salad was among the worst side salads I've had recently, and all the others have been at Japanese restaurants and also very simple. Their $1 miso soup side was pretty tasty. Their nigiri sushi, however, left much to be desired. The look, feel, and taste of both the fish and the rice weren't what I'm used to seeing at a fantastic sushi spot. Pretty sure I've had better nigiri luck at Blue C. I visited Kozue because my wife read its ad in local Japanese newspaper and it seemed attempting. So when we were in the Wallingford neighbor hood for lunch, it seems a natural choice. After the lunch, my wife told me that she probably won't visit here again. And I agree with her. The service is good. The waitress was nice and friendly, and they have this kids meal on a lovely tray for the kids. However the food quality, at least the ones for Saturday lunch, needs improvement. We ordered kids meal for our son. I got to admit it was nicely balanced with chicken teriyaki, shrimp tempura, salad, soy beans and white rice. It probably is the highlight of the lunch. My wife ordered tuna bibimbap. For a Japanese restaurant, this dish is a nice twist of classical Korean dish bibimbap, by replacing the beef with diced raw tuna...like a simpler and cheaper version of chirashi (sashimi rice bowl). The idea is good an original, but the execution is disappointed because the tuna portion is way too little. And the egg boiled too hard. If they give more portion of tuna, and make the egg soft so the yolk is still liquid, then it's a perfect dish. As to me, I was in the mood for something deep fried, so I ordered combo with deep fried chicken and breaded burger meat. Another disappointment because it was fried way too dry. The chicken was hot and juicy at first, which was OK but once it cools down, it became quite dry. As to the fried breaded burger meat, it was quite dry from the very beginning and definitely not my taste. So from what I can see, Kozue has some good ideas on dishes, with good service, but really need to work on their executions. I was a little skeptical of this place when we walked in. Usually, when an establishment sells both teriyaki AND sushi, it's not the sushi that you want to go there for. However, this place changed my mind. Their wall menu of sushi rolls made me want to order every one of them. The sushi was pretty good, fresh, and enjoyable. For lunch, they have a $1 nigiri special, and my friends and I had our fill. They also had some great roll options - though I would warn you to opt out of the eel roll (there was hardly any eel in ours). My friend got the yakisoba. I first went to kozue because line at musashi was crazy. At that time, I remember having one of their donburi and didnt think much about it. It was mediocre home-style food. On recent rainy night, We went back to kozue, again because our original detination of "yoroshiku" nearby was closed. We decided to order bunch of their small happy hour dish and a large house sake. (They have long happy hour everyday from 6pm-9pm). We did eat foods because it was infront of us but frankly, It was just not that great. We ordered Fried salmon, shumai, mussels, spring rolls from the small plate menues and had two orders of uni and two orders of tamago. For some reason, shumai and mussels were fried, and so we ended up with four very oily dishes. Tastes were okay. They were all very unhealthy and fast food like though. It reminded me of foods you would see at large asian buffet, prepared in bulks. Tamago and uni was just ok as well.
