Went here a few years ago with the fam , it was good , but didn't stand out ( not in a bad way) . My birthday was last week on Monday , so my dad, bro , and my bf went to get sushi . We decided on Fukusuke like usual , but forgot they are closed on Monday's. My brother suggested Tenkyu because we didn't feel like spending 200+ for 3 guys and 1 gal at a place like Robatas... Well , we ordered tons of sushi, at least 75 pieces of anything that sounded good and usually tastes good at other places . We also ordered sunomono , which had real crab. Was very surprising , most places , including high end restaurants use fake in the salad. It was only 3.50 too. Our bill was like 105$ which I would consider to be very reasonable for how much we ate. 4 teas, 4 sunomono, 4 rice , 4 miso , an order of tempura , and at least 75+ pieces of sushi and rolls etc . We were pretty darn full, so when the waitress asked us if we wanted dessert , we actually said no , which is surprising because we love Mochi ! Hehe. The waitress came out 10 mins later with two plates of dessert , fried ice cream and fried bananas, and said it was on the house !! Of course we weren't going to be rude even though we were stuffed , and ate every last piece of the deliciousness ! And to top it off , they didn't know it was my birthday , so they honestly were being kind. Very happy with my birthday dinner . The waitress was kind . The place wasn't busy so she came whenever we needed a refill , but didn't overly bother us. I will keep this place on my list . I thought it was very reasonable , tasty , friendly , quiet , etc. I liked everything we ordered ;) will go again in the near future ! read more

I am embarrassed that I have never dined at Tenkyu until tonight. Our party of 4 had a wonderful family style meal sharing plates of sashimi, dragon rolls, Bento boxes and bowls of Miso Ramen soup. Everything with delicious, very high quality and a good value. We will be back again soon. Oh yes, for desert have the Mochi. This is a great family run Japanese restaurant. This review is strictly for the sushi since that is all I order. This place has great quality fresh fish that is beautifully presented. The variety of the specialty rolls is very imaginative and creative. I've been here many times and the fish has always been consistently great and fresh. read more

This is my sushi-go-to spot in downtown San Rafael. I always order their combination sushi plate - those are affordable, always fresh & tasty. I do not like Mackerel & they will always accommodate my request to replace that on the plate which is a testament for their good service. read more

I absolutely love this place and i LOVE the manager - I wish I knew her name. My friend and I come here AT LEAST once a week for lunch, often times more. There is nothing more comforting than a bowl of their miso soup and a variety of delicious, fresh, hot food. I get a special roll, a combination of CA roll and spicy tuna, lite rice, sliced thin - it's heavenly every time. I've had the dragon roll and the fish was all very fresh and tasty. I've enjoyed every bento box i've ever had here, i love the tempura, the CA salad is awesome... everything about coming here is happy and delicious. :) read more

Tenkyu is our family restaurant. The food is always excellent, I would give it the full 5 stars for that alone and the people who work there make the place so welcoming you can't go wrong. I always have sushi, my wife usually has one of the Obento entrees and my kids usually have one of the Tenkyu sushi rolls. I have always liked this place. The food is good and atmosphere pleasant, but I cannot help remember a humorous faux pas that happened years ago when dining here with friends. This friend of mine was a real wasabi lover. He needed his wasabi fresh and spicy. We tried about six batches of their wasabi until they broke open a new container or something, because we they finally got it right, they got it right. I was there last week with some friends and the food was so good. I don't usually eat tobiko but the chef asked me to try it on my roll and it was really good. Everybody was really nice and friendly and parking was easy. I was disappointed that the little boats were not going around the bar but everything we ordered was so fresh and good. This sushi is not the best but not the worst. It's "okay" or "fine". The service is good. Tenkyu may not be deserving of three full stars but I definitely had more than a two star experience, so I am going with three. read more

Tired place needs an upgrade and at least some Japanese staff. Interior is in bad shape. Sauces and broths are dilute. Too many better places in Marin to waste your time here where they clearly either don't care or understand how to make quality Japanese food. read more

Best deal for lunch. I had a very quick lunch of shrimp tempura with salad, rice and miso soup. The whole bill was $8.66, so it was a deal. The food came out really fast, service efficient and friendly. I'll be back for more lunches in the future! read more

The service was fast and friendly. The Taxi roll I ordered was good and so was the miso soup. My girlfriends liked their food as well. The best sushi I've had in Marin. I have been looking all over this area and I have found it. It's quick which is great for my one hour break and the sashimi is so fresh and so good. It is a little pricy for a regular lunch but totally worth it for one of those days when you just have the craving for fresh good quality sushi. read more

This place was really horiable, maybe i just ordered the wrong thing. I got three rolls, two basic rolls tuna, and cucumber, and one alaskan roll. The two basic rolls where probally the worst suish I have ever ate, they used this nasty seaweed that was really hard to chew and the suish it self was bad. The alaskan roll was a little bit better. Went there for sushi & Udon. Pros: 1. Ambience is a lot better than I expected 2. Plating for the Udon was creative. Cons: 1. The udon was not as good as what I've had at other Japanese places. 2. The sushi was overpriced. There's a reason why the place was empty on a Saturday evening. Nice people but the quality of the fish really isn't top notch. We had the "fresh" red snapper and it was barely edible.. the sushi boats are fun but they are rarely filled with anything more than mayonaisy based shrimp salads or the occasional edamame. read more

Can't understand the great reviews for Tenkyu. The service was average at best; they seemed understaffed and stressed as a result. But I really go for the sushi, and I'm sad to report that it was a notch below even the service. The fish was of sub-par quality, mostly soft and indistinctive for flavor. The rolls were more intriguing (that's how rolls are supposed to be), yet none stood out as memorable and all were far smaller than other restaurants I've been to. That said, the prices are not cheap. It's disappointing to shell out $14-$16 for a roll that's smaller than the fatties Cheech & Chong used to blow through. There are lots of other options nearby. Next time, one of them will get my business. read more

Sticky rice in rolls was more like a paste and way too sweet. The fried prawn in my Dragon Roll was fried a long time ago, cold and spongy, unlike the fried prawns in my sons tempura, which were hot and crispy. The imitation crab was flavorless and mostly mayo. This is my go-to for Sushi in Marin. Robatas in Strawberry is good too but often more of a production and a bit pricier. Tenkyu is consistently good at good prices. Service very friendly. My faves are Tempura hand roll and the Sake Sashimi. Lunch prices are a very good deal while dinner prices are decent. The bento box is good too and the chicken katsu is done just like it should be. Sometimes I really wish they were open later than 9am tho. read more

Tenkyu's prices are far under those of other local San Rafael sushi places. Yet their fish is just as fresh and tasty. They have placards on the tables that show where each type of fish is sourced. Very friendly, too. I come in about every 2 weeks and they know what table I prefer. Family operated and delicious sushi, sashimi, tempura, edamame, sunemono, etc. etc. etc! read more

I have ordered takeout from this restaurant three times now and fortunately I think this time I have learned my lesson. I placed an order and the girl told me be here in 20 to 25 minutes. She did not give me the total of my order either. I showed up 35 minutes after I placed the order and was told with an attitude, that she had told me 25 minutes to 30 minutes. The irony is that I was at 35 minutes after ordering so I was not early and the food should have been ready but it was not. Now at almost an hour it is still not ready. To top that off what I had anticipated based on their menu to come out to just under $60 is over $75. That is kind of a big jump considering I factored what was on the menu and what I was ordering. To top it off the order that they made was not what I had ordered and had to be remade again. This by far was my worst ordering experience with them, the good news is I will never return to this restaurant because I now know better. Third time's the charm! read more
