Tenkyu is our family's favorite Japanese restaurant. Nice decor, good service, easy access and most importantly great food. They have a fun sushi bar with an excellent chef. The ingredients are the best and the people are super friendly. My kids and I order sushi and they always have interesting specials. My wife likes the chicken teriyaki and the tempura. I went to Tenkyu for the second time this mouth and the food was amazing!!!!! I loved it!!!! The sushi was fresh and so so so yummy! Definitely recommend the Geisha Roll and 49ner Roll they are awesome. The whole experience was great. Great service and great food. Must go go go :) read more

This is a well priced choice for delicious Japanese food and sushi. My favorites are the shrimp tempura udon noodle soup and the fresh crab hand roll. I also recommend the sweet potato rolls for anyone looking for a vegetarian choice. The service is always good but be warned they close between lunch and dinner. read more

I've been to every sushi/Japanese restaurant in SF (well almost all) and Marin and many in the East Bay, North Bay. Yes, Sushi Ran stands out. I actually feel that Hana in Rohnert Park is the BEST. Tenkyu, though, provides the best quality for the money. Excellent rolls and very reasonably priced sashimi. It's my frequent stand-by. I have used Tenkyu several times for 'entertainment' platters. Best bang for the buck anywhere! Fabulous. Drive up, double park for 30 seconds and they'll bring a beautiful platter out to you. read more

I have been going to Tenkyu for 9 years and have always loved it. The owner (Chuck) has a contagious laugh that he greets you with (along with your name) every time you come in (it's kinda like the Asian version of Cheers, I guess). Last Friday night was the second time my daughter and I visited Tenkyu in the past few weeks. The first time we were there, the food was fresh, and it was fun sitting at the sushi bar and pulling items off of the floating boats. We decided to make it a place to go to celebrate. So, last Friday we thought we'd make a return trip. I am very disappointed to say that we will not be returning as my daughter came down with the worst case of food poisoning in her life. I was hesitant to classify this as food poisoning at first, but after speaking with a coworker this morning and learning that she suffered severe food poisoning symptoms shortly after eating at Tenkyu a few months ago, it's pretty safe in my mind that it is not a coincidence. So unfortunate, because the sushi chef is so nice, and there are no sushi restaurants near me that have the floating boats. :( read more

The food here is decent and not too expensive, considering it is Marin Japanese food. Why the bad marks then? I came here with a coworker once, and when we were seated, they asked us if we wanted some edamame, as if it were on the house/included. Lo and behold, when the bill came, we were charged for it! This place does not deserve a star at all; but I selected one store just for effect. I walked into the restaurant and the woman asked me what I would like. I asked for chicken donburi, the woman said, "chicken teriyaki?"; I said again "chicken donburi." This time, she repeated what I said, "chicken donburi?" I said "yes, chicken donburi, please." About 3 minutes later, she brought me out chicken chunks with sesame seeds sprinkled on them with some sort of sauce that was not even teriyaki, over sticky and pastey white rice; nothing else in it. I said this is not chicken donburi. And I added, "it is also not chicken teriyaki." I left and have no regrets about never returning. read more

Clean, simple, laid-back place for Japanese in San Rafael. Prices are quite affordable for the area and service is always friendly and relaxed. Veggie ramen is very tasty and they are flexible with order customization. Fried green tea ice cream is extra delicious - a great way to wrap up a neatly presented and healthy meal. read more

My boyfriend and I ate here last night and it was amazing! We wanted sushi but were sick of the same sushi places and walked into our first sushi boat experience. We didn't know how it worked but decided to go for it. The sushi on the boats were amazing and in addition to that we ordered the sauteed calamari which I highly recommend. It was cooked just perfectly and came in such a nice crunchy light breaking and sauce. I also had a spicy tuna roll which I really enjoyed and my bf had the pork ramen which he enjoyed as well. The service was wonderful. Our server and the sushi chef were extremely welcoming, the restaurant had a very friendly family oriented feel to it. We will definitely be back. read more

Just like the three other central San Rafael sushi/Japanese places, Tenkyu has some delicious sushi. Isn't all too expensive, and tastes good. What else do you need? Try their spider roll, it's great... Oh, and of course it's a plus that they have the horseshoe shaped sushi bar with little sushi boats going around the chef. Not a bad decision for a nice Japanese dinner in San Rafael... I'm sure you won't be disappointed. read more

The fish has always been fresh tasting. I always get the spicy salmon rolls, vegetable tempura, salmon sashimi, and avocado roll. The owners are very nice and the atmosphere is relaxed and quiet. I have tried most of the sushi restaurants around here and I keep coming back here. read more

we eat here often and the fish is always fresh, they give good size portions and they are very friendly. they will change fish on the rolls to accomodate your preference. ie, if it has mayonnaise, you can substitute something else. only complaint is that there is not the largest selection of rolls. their bento boxes are very big and very good as well. read more

Best Japanese place to take you kids in Marin! Anywhere where you walk in and see floating boats, a train track above the door, an array of kids board games, and sweet candies that come with the check, is a blessing to us parents. Sadly this is a negative review: I love sushi and thought a place with a Go playing title must be worth trying. But ten kyu is not a strong rank in the game of Go. I started with miso soup: anemic slop lacking the complexity and richness of a decent miso. Then I tried the Marin roll, listed in online reviews as a tasty treat, it was just cooked sushi, crab shreds, a tiny knob of prawn and a sliver of avocado in tough seaweed and super compressed tasteless rice. My sushi proper starred Uni or sea urchin, at $7.25 a special treat. The uni itself was delicious but the wrapper of tough thick seaweed was like chewing gum, impossible to eat. My tuna was utterly lean, none of the yumchious fat one might hope for. The rice beneath it was small, which is good, but cold and tasteless. Where was the luscious combination of the sweet Mirin wine and the tangy rice vinegar? And why so cold as if it had been made ages before? If I want this sort of sushi I can go to Safeway. The clangy ambience just finished off the experience. I couldn't wait to leave. Thirty kyu: beginner status is more like it. I want at least a Dan level restaurant. read more

Spent a wonderful day in Marin and was looking for a good Japanese restaurant....this was certainly not it! We all ordered Chicken Teriyaki entree, first mistake. The miso soup was hot. The chicken had no grill marks and appeared to have been warmed in a microwave; slimy, full of gristle and covered with Teriyaki sauce. A previous review said "no thrills," it was more like no taste. The salad was a handful of bagged, hopefully washed lettuce, with a spoonful of Thousand Island dressing. Salad was totally out of place with the food. There were only three tables filled at the maximum and it was Saturday night. Will be back to San Rafael, but will not go back here. read more

This has to be one of my favorite Sushi places of all times. Chuck the sushi chef makes up pretty much anything you want if you can't find something you want on the menu. Ping the manager is always very friendly and will always make sure you tea cup is full. This is also a very family friendly place where even my six year old can come and enjoy her favorite bento box without all the noise and commotion of some of the other sushi restaurants in town. read more

I was impressed! I went out with my BF for sushi last night, and first we went to Umi Sushi, it was so horible that we left mid-meal and went accross the street to Sushi to Dai for. That place was good, but we decided since we were still a little hungry and were in the area we would try Tenkyu. This was the best out of the three. It was tasty, had a relaxed atmostphee, good service and was more affordable than the other three. This will be the place I'll go to for Sushi in San Rafael from now on! read more

Tenkyu is definitely my favorite Sushi restaurant iv been to hands down. Not only is the atmosphere of the restaurant really nice, the waitress's are very polite fast serving and always have a smile on their face happy to serve us customers.The cooks and the sushi chef always makes my orders quickly and with no mistakes. As for their menu goes, they have a very good variety of different rolls, hand rolls, soups, and even desserts. The sushi is always fresh and constantly makes my taste buds feel refreshed. 5 of us went there for lunch. We all thought the Miso Soup was bad. Like they added water to save on food cost. Waitress left the miso soups on the table until lunch arrived. We all had Bento boxes. Teriyaki Salmon was not good. Rice was not tasty. The little salad with the thousand Island dressing was watered down and dripping. California rolls were ok but not as tasty as I've had. Waitress came by and picked up 1 bento box after we finished but left the other 4 empty ones, then came by much later and grabbed 2 more and cleaned the rest when the check came in. Green Tea was good but she never returned to fill them. Bad Service, Not so good food. 3 out of 5 of us agreed not to come back. i think the funniest thing was the tv that was on was showing human casualties. Some by tiger, some by parachute jumping and other types of deaths. The one with the view had to ask them to turn it off as it was quite disturbing for lunch. Oh well, onto the next Japanese Restaurant. read more
