Let me start by saying that myself and my friend are now on day 2 of experiencing the worse food poisoning in our lives. We came to tenzan two days ago as we've been to this restaurant in the past and had nothing but good things to say about this restaurant in the past. After paying this restaurant a visit after a year or so of not being able to go here due to the pandemic, it seems everything has really gone down the drain. When we arrived at the restaurant we were rudely greeted by a waiter we have never seen here before. The ambiance was very off and quiet because the music was off for some odd reason. What kind of restaurant doesn't play music for their customers? We kindly asked the waiter if she could play music for us, simply so myself and my friend could catch up without the entire restaurant hearing our conversation. It seemed that to the waiter who was serving us this request was uncalled for after she grunted and looked at us like our request was an issue. She lied to us and said that the manager is the only one who knows how to operate the sound system and thats why the music wasn't on. A few minutes later we see the manager show up only for her to not do anything about the situation, the ambiance was awkward and unpleasant. Aside from this the food was served to us in takeout containers as if we ordered take out? What kind of dining experience is that? As someone who truly cares about the environment this comes off as extremely wasteful, they could've easily served us our food on actual bowls and plates just like any other restaurant. Once we got our order we also didn't get what we ordered but because we were so hungry we just ate what was brought out to us without complaining. Here I am two days later still unable to go back to work because of the horrible food poisoning I got from eating here. I called the restaurant mainly to let them know that the pork or sushi that is being served is contaminated because me and my friend have been experiencing the same exact symptoms since eating here. The person whom I spoke to on the phone was not empathetic to my situation whatsoever didn't offer me any ultimatum and made it seem like speaking to the manager would make a difference in the situation. The manager did nothing and told me to go to the doctor and made me feel like I was lying and making this all up. Granted I was not asking for a refund or anything in return I simply called them to let them know they could potentially be getting more people sick. If you are thinking of ordering here for dinner or takeout please save your money and don't spend a single penny on this restaurants food, it's unhygienic and the service is terrible and overpriced for what they're serving. Usually always my go to for Sushi birthday dinner celebrations in Brooklyn. Recently, we went on a Sunday around 7PM for a dinner for 4 people. You don't need a reservation beforehand, but I'd ask for the private rooms upon arrival. I was a bit taken aback when they didn't offer it as the default seating - would have added a nice touch. The rooms are private and you have to take off your shoes and sit on a cushion. We usually always order salmon special, tuna special, sunset roll, 18th Ave roll, and Brooklyn roll. The specials come with fatty pieces of sashimi, tuna/salmon rolls and bigger pieces of fish on top of rice. The sunset roll is usually our favorite special roll - interesting texture and good mix of eel in it! Some apps we've tried are the maki maki chicken and yakitori both of which were really good. The seaweed and kani salads are pretty standard. Usually the specials come with miso soup and salad on the side as well. My mom really enjoys the eel donburi and the naki udon (very big portion and generous with a little bit of veggies, seafood, egg). I'm not a crazy fan of their dessert selection - they serve fried ice cream and lady M slices. The overall ambience is pretty decent and for the amount of food you get, price doesn't break the bank. I have not taken the time to make an update.. Boy, what ever happened to Tenzan? Did they change owners or something? Because obviously the food has downgraded so much that it saddens me! Atmosphere: First of it is a great place for a date or to dine solo. On a typical weekend Tenzan is packed with large groups eager to get their sushi on. During the days, it's must better to come in for lunch when it's nice and peaceful. You could even catch the game on the tube by the bar. This new location has 2 floors and has a modern clean look. Not fancy, but pretty good for Bensonhurst. Something cool to look out for are these private booths with sliding wooden doors, reminiscent of a ryoutei but not quite. I'm a regular here, had many family outings and date nights/lunches. I'm always satisfied! The staff checks in on you enough to make sure you're pleased with the meal or drinks. My tea is always filled. ***As per the food, I cannot get enough of the fried oyster roll and spider roll (soft shell crab) both have the right amount of mayo sauce. Yes I like fried foods but who doesn't. Spicy Like roll and dragon roll (eel) are so good. They can also make these rolls with brown rice but I always opt for white ($1 additional per roll for brown rice). I would also recommend the salmon teriyaki, I know plenty of sushi places that overcook their salmon but not here. I feel since the place looks so nice they feel they can charge a few bucks more per dish than say the far better wasabi across the street. Staff is friendly enough but not exactly on the ball. I got the Sushi regular entree which comes with soup, they bring out my soup and I literally have 2 spoonfuls before my entree is out. Timing is everything guys and when you have a large and mostly empty restaurant it probably doesnt serve you well to rush out the few customers sitting down. As for the soup it came in a really cool bamboo bowl, I wouldnt mind getting a set of those bowls. The soup its self tasted like every other Miso soup. Do they just use a mix? Does anyone make their own? As for the sushi it was decent but nothing too special aside from putting a piece of Kani on the plate, I like Kani. The rest was garden variety Tuna,Salmon, White Fish etc. I also got Sake and didnt like they serve it in a glass. I like my Sake in a decanter so I can pour it in those cool lil cups. Tenzan is a pretty solid sushi joint. Good sushi is few and far in between in (South) Brooklyn, but my mom raved about this place. They've recently expanded and now the restaurant is pretty big (basically two store fronts and and upstairs). Enough room for psudo-tatami style private dining rooms. They also have a full bar and a cocktail menu (but you have to ask for it if you're seated for food). The rolls can get a little pricey (pricey for Brooklyn, not for Manhattan). I was a fan of the Sake Roll (spicy salmon, avocado and roe) as well as the Spicy Crunchy Yellowtail. My favorite was the UFO with tuna and shredded crab on top (there was also some kind of really good sauce inside). Service was pretty good, with the exception of them forgetting to bring us a hot entree that my mom ordered. They were apologetic though, and there were no other hiccups. My dad had the beef bento box, which was a lot of food (comes with a whole bowl of rice on the side). They also give you the option of having sashimi instead of sushi, which is pretty cool. Oh, you can also get a hefty glass of plum wine for $4.50 (for some reason, it's not on the menu). Not a bad deal at all. They also have some desserts. We tried the dragon egg (two chocolate eggs with ice cream inside); it had coffee ice cream inside, but you couldn't really taste it cuz of the thick chocolate shell. I wanted to update my review because boyfriend and I go to Tenzan quite often. I think it's important to show that we have become regular customers! Even though I've tried two sushi places on Staten Island where I live, I still crave Tenzan. Some of the things we order on a regular basis are as follows: (1) Spicy mixed appetizer - Boyfriend and I mention this at least 3x a week in conversation because we love it so much! It has cuts of different kinds of fish, including salmon, tuna, and shrimp (haha, because I'm still a sushi newbie so I don't know the different kinds of fish, I just eat it!) in a slightly spicy sauce that has bits of crab stick in it. BF eats all the octopus from it because I don't like it. There was only one occasion when it was really spicy and I had to stop eating after a while for fear of getting heartburn. Other than that, it's not that spicy. More like a kick. But oh boy, it's so good! (2) California rolls - Yes, people don't think california rolls are worth it because it's not really sushi and it can be found everywhere. But we love Tenzan's rolls! No other place makes them as good as they do. Why? A TON of avocado! They use a LOT more in comparison to other restaurants - two pieces of it! Their version doesn't have cucumber in it, but we don't care at all. We always get spicy mixed and cali rolls. Always always. The problem is deciding how many to get! Now we know to get the california roll dinner, which comes with 3 rolls for $9.95 with soup or salad because it's cheaper. Yummy miso soup! (3) Dragon roll - This has eel and cucumber with avocado wrapped around the outside with this yummy sauce. We don't plan on ordering this again anytime soon because we're not so fond of eel really. I just loved the flavors of this. The avocado with that sauce? Yummy. But we're going to stick with the fish now. (4) Rainbow roll - This is basically a california roll with different kinds of fish on top (salmon, tuna, and a white kind). (5) Sake roll and Snowing roll - These are both fairly similar in that they have the spicy salmon and spicy tuna in them, respectively. I prefer the sake one more now because it has salmon on the outside while the snowing has more spicy tuna on the outside. It's good to have a contrast in textures instead of all mush. I love this restaurant because: (1) The wait staff is friendly and attentive. On one occasion, the restaurant was very busy and packed. It took a while for us to get tea refills and our check, but we chalked it up to the fact that we were regular and pretty easygoing. The wait didn't bother us since we were able to just sit there and talk. I also like it when everyone says bye and thank you when we leave. Those little things definitely earn points because it makes me feel a lot more comfortable. If I'm not comfortable in an establishment, I won't want to go again. (2) They don't use a lot of rice on their rolls. I want to taste fish and all the stuff inside, not the rice. Also, I like the rice they use. It's not hard or too mushy. I actually don't notice the rice very much, which I think is important. I don't want to think, "Oh, I taste rice" when I pop a bite in my mouth. (3) They have the little rooms for parties of 4 or more! I know a lot of people ask if they can use the rooms, but they really do save it for larger parties. I finally had a chance to eat it one with boyfriend's family (12 of us). It was interesting to have to remove our shoes and put them in the little cabinet underneath. There was a little light switch to flip when ready to order or if we needed anything. It was an experience, and it was good to have the privacy with such a large group of people. (4) I really enjoy their tea. After having been to the other 2 sushi places on SI, I realized that not all places necessarily have good tea. I mean, it's not like I had bad tea, but I just really prefer the tea here. Now I'm just waiting for boyfriend to come back from Vancouver so that we can get back to some good Tenzan sushi eating! Decided to give this new place a try during New Year's Day and I'm glad I came! There is two floor to this place which is awesome for groups plus they have rooms that you sit in too with privacy, but they require your to take your shoes off and sit in. The inside environment is very cozy, comfortable and nice! Feels very good to sit and eat in this Resturant! The staffs were nice and the food came pretty quick! Though this is not a buffet sushi place, that's okay because their prices aren't that bad and they are made very deliciously in my opinion! As we sat down, they brought us hot green tea which is my favorite while eating sushi! Since it was our first time here, I asked the waiter for recommendation as to what is popular and good here. We ordered a taro and mango jelly milk tea since it was decent price considering for bubble tea. I must say I am very satisfied with it! Both were made very light yet tasteful! The jellies were soft and chewable! As for food, we ordered the spicy sashimi pizza (8 pieces), grilled teriyaki sauce squid, salmon sashimi deluxe, sunset roll, dragon eel roll, Philadelphia roll, spicy salmon roll, red lady roll, eel avocado roll and another special roll (forgot the name). However, it's always a little difficult to flag down a waiter as it's very busy, and they are quite forgetful when it comes to take-out orders. I understand that it is busy during COVID though; they didn't have this problem prior to quarantine. I usually get the Spicy Maki Combo, the Sweet Potato Roll, and a Hibachi Special. It fills up 3 of us very well. They now use paper plates and plastic lids to serve their food, so if you're looking for something fancy, just know they're still following COVID guidelines and touching/washing/reusing customers' used dishes and utensils as little as possible. Very decent place. They have private rooms. Huge plus. We were here for Chinese New Year 2015 for a small gathering. It packed up fast. Also BYOB, but they may charge you $15 for cork service. Yes I'm not a big fan of that, but business is business. And business is good here. Highlights were definitely all the sashimi that was ordered. We had baby yellowtail, toro, salmon, and tuna. We ordered a few rolls, but they were standard fare. My family also ordered a hibachi shrimp and teriyaki beef. I'm not a particular fan of cooked food when I have Japanese cuisine, so I didn't care much for those. Those were pretty standard. We also had a grilled squid. Standard fare as well. However one cool cooked item I had was the salmon neck. Not too shabby. They accompany it with a ginger type of sauce for dipping purposes, but I went without. It was just lightly grilled salmon neck and it was pretty good as is. One thing of note is that the decor is nice. Very clean all around. Very spacious. Restroom is well maintained. They even have a second floor here. Wait staff was also very attentive. Their English is fine if that is a question for some of you. To finish it off my youngest nephew ordered a green tea fried ice cream. Nothing special. Standard fare. Definitely a great place for a date. Good lighting and not too loud on the music. Bill came to $270 before tip. It was a party of five. A little pricey for this type of establishment, but the quality was on par. And that's what counts to me, so it is worth the price of admission. If you haven't been to Tenzan new location, than you have got to visit it! Don't worry you don't have to look very far for the new location since it's literally across the street from the old location. When I walked into Tenzan, I literally thought I was in another world. New and chic decor, full bar, and they still kept the most unique quality of their restaurant - the private rooms where you are required to take your shoes off. The interior of this restaurant is absolutely beautiful and modern! The service here is still as good. The food was great quality as well. Miso Soup - tasty, not over salted Green salad - good! Kani Salad - I really didn't anticipate for it to be big, but it was a little big for me and my boyfriend didn't eat it so it was all up to me to finish it. Nabe Yaki Udon - My boyfriend always orders this when we go to Tenzan especially if we come here for lunch. It's one of his favorite menu items. Nabe Yaki Udon is a noodle soup filled with shrimp, chicken, scallop, crabmeat, fish cake, vegetable, and udon. I'm not a huge fan of udon cause it's so thick. The broth was flavorful. The chicken was cooked to the right texture. The udon noodles were thick, soft, and cooked to the right texture as well. Great food and good experience. If your looking to have a group dinner, Tenzan is a good restaurant for it or it's appropriate for a date as well. The chic decor and good food can promise you a good experience here. read more
