I've heard so many positive things about Tenzan so I was excited to try! I ordered for delivery and received it fairly quickly and everything was still very fresh. I ordered the triple hako which came with no rice and was very good! It was packed with fish and good for those try to watch their carb intake. I also ordered the yellow roll which is essentially yellowtail jalapeño in a roll. This was super tasty but I think a side of spicy mayo or ponzu would've elevated the roll. Eel is always hit or miss but here, my eel sushi piece was perfect! The only item that i didn't love was the toro scallion handroll. This was packed with fresh fish but what threw me off was that the fish was really cold which was strange. This is probably best when dining in because the seaweed was soggy by the time it got to me (pretty normal for delivery). Overall, Tenzan lived up to the hype and will definitely be added to my sushi delivery rotation! Their menu is quite extensive so I'm looking forward to trying some other things next time! read more

This is the sushi deluxe from Tenzan -- tuna roll, miso soup, plus a water and ponzu -- $50 delivered. It looks worse than it eats. Yeah, the tuna's a little mealy and the garnishes are suspect. Variety? Not much. But the quality is surprisingly solid. Pieces are well-sized, rice is warm, and nothing's falling apart on you. This is your run-of-the-mill sushi deluxe. No flash, no frills -- just workhorse sushi. The Josh Hart of the sushi world, if you will. Heads up: there's also a Tenzan 89 that does omakase, so don't get them twisted. I'm giving Tenzan a B-. Tenzan is a good restaurant and a decent value for Midtown, but not the best overall. I met a colleague here from work and his wife for a quiet Sunday evening dinner. The space is clean and open, capable of handling a good number of patrons in its dining and bar area to the right and another dining room to the left. Service was quick and accurate. We ordered and food began to come out within ten or fifteen minutes of ordering. I ordered the chicken teriyaki and the Special eel or Dragon roll with the cucumber and shrimp tempura inside. First our salads came out with the carrot ginger dressing. The salad greens were fresh and, topped with a slice of cucumber and tomato, the salad was what one would expect at a Japanese restaurant. My chicken teriyaki entree comes with a choice of salad or miso soup, again well within expectations. The food started coming out quickly thereafter, with my entree and Special Dragon roll coming out before I finished my salad. None of us had finished our salads before the entrees came out. The chicken teriyaki was not the most flavorsome. The chicken is boiled, but it would be better to grill it to offer better texture and flavor. The chicken is a flattened chicken breast cut into thin strips over grilled onions and sliced carrots and cucumber with a broccoli floret. The teriyaki sauce was plentiful, but seemed a rather detuned teriyaki sauce. It was fortunately not too salty, but there is something amiss with this dish that is possibly offset by a rather filling dish. The chicken teriyaki will leave your palate with unmet expectations. The Special Dragon or eel roll was the highlight, but they neglected to bring the mustard and the amount of pickled ginger was a little on the short end. The roll itself is quite a substantial one at nearly the price of the chicken teriyaki, but so much better. I ate the roll last and I am glad I did. It was the best part of the meal. The shrimp tempura and cucumber offer the crisp texture and perfect counterpoint to the eel and sauce. It's a big roll, trending maki sized, that is so satisfying to eat. The shrimp tails, when tempura fried, are so appealing to eat as it shatters in your mouth, adding to the textured quality. This roll hit slightly above expectations and the experience sort of evened itself out overall. I would not describe Tenzan as prime sushi of the upper tier, but one can dine here and not be terribly disappointed, not be hungry afterwards, and not be drained of funds either. So despite a three star rating for my experience, I can see Tenzan as a neighborhood staple and a spot you can afford to frequent. read more

I had a great time at this restaurant. It was a hidden gem. We were planning to go to Kazunori nearby, but it was completely full and so we decided to try out the spot instead it wasn't very packed, which was great for us because we don't like super crowded spaces and they had a very extensive menu with several options. The staff that was extremely accommodating and kind and they were very quick to serve us. Now for the food - it was a very good sushi quality, especially compared to pricing. I can be quite picky about Sushi but the consistency of the sushi was great as well as incredibly flavorful taste. I got Toro and Ikura, which were both very decent quality, especially for the price. The flavor was great highly recommend to anybody in the area who wants a more low-key spot to catch up with friends or even just go solo because of how warm and welcoming the ambience is. The first thing you need to know about dining here is that you're going to be here for awhile. This is the type of place where you will be actively wondering where your appetizers are because they've taken so long to come out of the kitchen. I was shifting in my seat and twiddling my fingers waiting for this food to come. If you're hungry, don't come in expecting speedy service and to be in and out. That said, the food is not bad. I went for the shrimp and vegetable tempura bento box, which was $21 for the tempura, spring rolls, shumai, california rolls, rice, and a miso soup. Generally speaking, everything was tasty-- I enjoyed each individual component, but all together, I was weighed down by how much starch and fried food there was in this tray. I wished for something to cut through it to be included, but I understand that this was somewhat of my own doing because of it ultimately was what I ordered. The fact that this box came with rice blew my mind because I couldn't imagine eating tempura with more starch, but that might just be me. The tempura itself was good the first few bites but came with so much breading that it made it difficult to eat more than a few pieces when combined with all of the other starches I was eating in the rest of the box. It was like the ratio of shrimp to breading was 1:1 which definitely should not be the ratio. Ultimately it was all okay but I don't think this would be my first choice. read more

Came back in 2023 (last weekend to be precise), and the experience was anything but good. The staff was nice and we came as a large group (20+ people), so I appreciated their service. However, food quality was bad, and I was shocked. Ordered two sushi rolls (tuna, yellowtail) that cost me $15. Yellowtail roll had multiple pieces of fish bone in them. The sushi rolls were poorly wrapped and misshapen. Whoever made it was not experienced. Teriyaki is also no longer bento box style, but rather, served as a stand-alone dish. My friend ordered the salmon and it was a thin filet drenched in syrupy sauce. They forgot to give us the rice. This place used to be decent, but what happened? read more

I've been here twice now. Service can be disorganized and slow. My first visit in December was pretty bad with the waiter barely able to take and complete an order. We came away hungry. Walking down the street we picked Tenzan mainly because other places nearby were crowded with waits. Tenzan's interior has a nice, woodsy Japanese style theme, and not institutional as so many Japanese slash sushi places are these days. The place was pretty full of local Midtown-Easters which was a good sign, but we got a table immediately. The grilled Hamachi Kama (yellowtail collar) was a large piece that two of us shared as an appetizer. I think it was a bit over cooked but still fine. Edamame was good, but the Roasted Shishito Peppers were awesome! My Pork Katsu (Panko breaded, fried cutlet) came out perfectly done. Two slices were tasty and filling, especially with the bowl of rice and Miso soup. Service was good. We enjoyed the relaxing ambiance and not being rushed despite the dinner hour. I noticed Tenzan while walking in the area and it immediately brought me back to my days in Brooklyn where I used to visit this place all the time. I didn't realize how many locations they had. Good for them. It is a nice sized place that wasn't too busy for lunch. We came a little later for lunch maybe that is why. We sat in the window and were taken care of right away. We started with the shishito peppers. Solid choice. They had a nice yuzu sauce to them that really worked well. For lunch I went with the 3 roll lunch special. One of the most underrated rolls is the peanut avocado. I for some reason love it. The contrast in texture and flavor is on point. Other than that it all tasted pretty standard. Spicy tuna and salmon avocado were good. The rolls werent rolled as well as other places. They were sort of coming apart. Nothing major but something to keep in mind. In the end, this place hit the spot. Solid lunch spot. Probably good for delivery. This place wasn't spectacular but 3 stars does it justice. read more

We genuinely forgot to tip as we were busy working, but don't mess with my food I take it seriously!!! It's almost 11PM and I was starving! OMG. Delicious! The whole fam and I are in the city for the holidays so of course my brother who's from NYC has a list of restos for us to try. This is one of the tops! Granted Japanese is top on our list. We were 8 people and ordered different items on the menu such as sashimi platter, a couple of Chirashi, a couple of Unagidon, a plate of noodles, a couple of rolls and some other food... it was delicious! &&generous portions! Sushi was fresh. Unagidon was so good and big! Service was quick, some meals came with soup or salad, and I love that asian restos have soda in bottles! I ordered from this place tonight and boy do I have a lot of things to say about it. The one redeeming quality is that the order was supposed to arrive at 9PM and it actually showed up around 8:30. I ordered a piece of yellowtail, an avocado roll, a tuna hand roll, and an avocado salad. I also ordered an extra side of ginger dressing. First thing I noticed is that the avocado rolls were basically falling apart. None of them were tightly wrapped at all. It's pretty hard to mess up a vegetable roll for which you already have reasonably low expectations, so that was strike one. Next I noticed that the avocado on my salad was overripe. It was mushy in some spots and hard in others. It wasn't horrible but the seemingly not fresh bed of lettuce it was on only served to augment that fact. Strike two. The tuna hand roll was just ok, but the yellowtail piece made me legitimately nervous. It had a weird look to it up close and smelled a little off. Needless to say, I ended up throwing it out. Bonus: normally, I could essentially bathe in ginger dressing. I could hardly stomach any of this one (to add insult to injury, I had ordered extra, which they upcharge at this place). It was very thin and weirdly tangy. No thanks. HERES THE KICKER. As I was throwing out the bag, I noticed they had OVERCHARGED me. My Seamless order was exactly $27 (a rip off for the above, as it was) and it ended up being $27.75. I'm not going to call and complain about 75 cents but seriously? Enough. I definitely won't be ordering from this place again any time soon. read more
