Great for a great price. I heart the tamales. Small but inviting. Grab the burrito and head outside.

Restaurants, stores, and bars come and go on Elk Street, but Teocalli Tamale remains. A fixture in Crested Butte for over twenty years, Teocalli Tamale is the place to go to get a hearty, tasty meal after spending a morning and/or afternoon outdoors. Community favorites include the Piggy Pork (shredded pork drenched in pineapple, tomatillo, chipotle, garlic sauce) and Mike's Mex-o-Lina (spicy shredded beef -- ask to add sautéed bell peppers) in taco or burrito form. Needless to say, their tamales are a hit as well. A collection of unusual bottles of hot sauces, displayed in a wall rack, are available to add a little more heat and adventure to your visit. A variety of beverages are available, including uncommon sodas and beer. Each dish is prepared one by one as the customer interacts with a friendly employee stationed in the kitchen. At checkout, food can be packaged for sit down or take out. While there is seating inside, this is not the most comfortable place when the order line makes its way down the one aisle and out the door. Consider taking order to go -- even the margaritas can be prepared as take out. Note: the execution of dishes (proportion of ingredients) can vary depending on who takes the order.

So this cute teeny tiny place is a must for tamales. The line typically long but can go pretty fast. There are options for seating but it can fill up pretty fast. The menu has lots of options as far as burritos and plates they suggest. However if you would like to build your own burrito you can do that instead. Today I got the tamale plate with the vegetarian option-green Chile and cheese. They put beans and rice at the bottom of the plate pit tamales on top and then a choice of salsa and cilantro. It was pretty tasty. The tamales were perfect. I was not a huge fan of the rice and beans, they just didn't have enough flavor for me. But if you like plain rice and beans then it will be perfect for your taste buds. There is an option to order tamales by themselves as well. So I highly suggest you grab a dozen or half dozen to take with you.

Walked by this place a couple times and eventually said, YEP. Glad we did! We ordered two tamale plates (one pork, one cheese) and they were served on rice with beans and topped with green chili sauce, cilantro, and sour cream. Plates were about $13, but you can order tamales a La Carte for $3.25ish. They have burritos and tacos as well. Chips and salsa available as well as beers, margaritas, and a fountain soda machine. We were the only ones in there for a bit (yay for Covid distancing!) place has about 10-12 total tables. My only recommendation is having multiple sauce options as a topping. I'd like to have had a red sauce and green sauce option. They do have a restroom for customers.

Tamale that is supposed to have pork, but where is it?!

Their specialty is tamales, so I ordered them with pork, there was only the thinnest schmear of meat, it was all corn filling and then that was tasteless. My partner had a steak burrito and was ok with it.

Best Mexican spot in crested butte! Teocalli is a walk in, order, sit down, and they bring out your food kind of place. Small menu but delicious. Food - the guacamole is dynamite! The beef and chicken tacos are amazing. The red tamale with meat is good too. I wasn't a fan of the green tamale, as it was just cheese and green Chile sauce. It was unbelievably spicy (and I like heat), but too spicy to enjoy. Drinks - talk about the biggest margaritas! Although they are large and relatively inexpensive, my belly hurt after just a few sips. Super sweet margarita mix and cheap tequila will do that to you. Overall delicious and the cooks working there are super cool

Absolute 20/10 Experience!…read more We hosted my son and daughter-in-law's rehearsal dinner and meet-and-greet at Bonez, and honestly, everything was absolutely perfect. We had a pretty large group, but our server, Rachel, was a total rockstar. She took incredible care of us and didn't skip a beat. The rest of the staff was also extremely kind, helpful, and on top of everything the entire night. We went with the family-style fajita dinner with chicken, beef, and shrimp, and the food was delicious. Everyone kept talking about how good it was! We also opted for a drink package, and the service was so seamless that not a single person had to wait for or ask for a drink. If you are looking to host an event in Crested Butte, I cannot recommend Bonez enough. They truly made our special weekend kick off in the best way possible!

My husband enjoyed his draft beer. We ordered chips and salsa and were delighted when it came to the table. The fresh and crunch-errific chips came with a trio of in-house made salsas. All three were sooooo good. I'd never had a pineapple habanero salsa but now I'm determined to learn to replicate it at home. We were only in town two nights but next time we're in Crested Butte we will absolutely return to Bonez for dinner. YUM! PS the happy hour prices are REALLY good!

The gazpacho was top notch, fresh and had bright color and flavor. My wife's filet was cooked perfectly with great texture on outside and tender on the inside. I ordered the Colorado lamb sirloin. It was hard to cut through...was it the slightly tough texture or the non-serrated knife (asked for serrated, restaurant did not have)? I think a little of both. I ordered the chimichurrie to go with the lamb. It came in a cute white ceramic vessel shaped a little like an hourglass with an narrow waist and flared bottom and top. At the top, you could see bright green liquid oil without any of the obvious other chunky ingredients of chimichurri. Ahh, you might think that the next step would be to stir it with a small spoon (often paired with the traditional small ramekin of chimichurri)... alas, no small utensils, just our dinnerware. Not only that, but I generously thought that this fine establishment fully intended to present this as their new twist on chimichurri. Not wanting to complain, I sheepishly drizzled the green oil onto my lamb and made the best of it. Only on my last bites of lamb did I discover belatedly that the dressing had separated and discovered the bright greens and garlic layered densely at the bottom. Two take home messages. Future diners: remember to shake the chimi! Elk Ave Prime: if you are going to charge $7 for a sauce, improve your execution so your customers can fully appreciate your culinary skills.
