Heard great things so I decided to give it a try. Overall food was good but not great. Didn't leave me feeling like I want to keep coming back. I had the trio of steak, shrimp and spicy chicken over brown rice. The rice was very good as was the chicken but steak was tough, it was hard to cut, very chewy like a flank type of steak just didn't go well with the meal. Miso soup was also rather bland just didn't have the wonderful taste I've enjoyed at nearby sushi places. My family and I love this place. The staff is always pleasant, the food is delicious, and it's ready pretty quickly. The chicken tends to run on the dry side, but I don't mind because their teriyaki sauce is amazing. Their potstickers are so good... I don't like the red sauce that comes with it but I just use teriyaki. Their prices have gone up since they first opened, but whose haven't? I think I ordered the beef teriyaki combo and the shrimp tempura. The beef was good and the wait time wasn't too long. Granted it was about half an hour before closing. Don't pay the extra $2 for a combo. Unless you drink around 10 times it's not worth it. They give you 2 gyozas which aren't worth it. The shrimp tempura was also underwhelming. I was expecting crunchy tempura but this was just soggy. Were the workers just tired at this point? I don't know. In summary, this place is good if you just order the meat bowls and not upgrade to the combo. A drink and 2 gyozas are not worth an extra $2. read more

I've eaten here several times and the donburi are really really good. I've had beef, chicken, and pork bowls and enjoyed all of them. Serving sizes are also great you get plenty of food with rice and a side salad. The only downside for me is the ramen. I feel that it falls short but if you're looking for a good rice bowl this is the perfect spot. Overall the prices feel like a good value for your money too. This was OK for central valley/merced food - I ordered the chicken ramen but would prefer if they did a veggie ramen. My partner ordered the teriyaki chicken and we both got the upgrade (or whatever it is called) where you get 2 gyoza and unlimited fountain drinks. The gyoza were deep-fried ad the sauce was not very good. The ramen was OK. My partner said the teriyaki chicken was pretty good, but the rest of the meal was only OK (Spinach salad with ranch dressing, rice). We also took the complimentary miso soup-it was OK. What was really good was the service. The cashier was friendly and made us feel welcome. Did not roll her eyes when we forgot to take our number to the table. What was disappointing was that the utensils were all plastic and I kicked myself yet again for forgetting to bring that darn travel set I have. read more

The food is okay. A healthy choice compared to a lot of fast food. A long wait, but that means they cooked it fresh, so that's okay with me. The rolls are uninspired but okay for fast food. If comparing to other take-out, it's better than the general run of fast food, but not as good as, say, Raley's deli or any of the good local taquerias. The server proactively sought a tip when I paid with a credit card, with choices of 15, 20 or 25%, which startled me since it was take-out and there was a cash tip jar sitting right there, and then, when I said, "OK, 15%," which to me was quite generous for someone just ringing up an order, she not only did not say "thank you" but seemed to give me an unhappy look for not choosing a higher amount. This is my first 1 star review. I feel so strongly about the rude customer service, it is necessary to post. This is placed at a low success rate location. When given a choice, I have gone here to support a business with the odds stacked against them. For whatever reason, this corner spot at the Promenade doesn't stay in business long. The food is good here. The customer service when you walk in the door is RUDE and blatantly disrespectful. I will never eat here again for that reason. When I walked in the restaurant was empty. One of the employees asked if I was picking up food and I said no. I think she could tell I had never been there before (and she was right) so she gave me a menu to look at so that I could decide what I would like. I was happy to see that they had several vegetarian options. Another employee told me that I could look at the big menu board behind the counter as well. I asked her for vegetarian options and she said she liked the fried tofu, which I ended up ordering, and also told me the other customer favorites. She was nice enough to chat with me about other things and as soon as the person I was meeting there arrived, our order was taken right away. They have several booths that fun along the middle of the restaurants and tables with chairs and a long booth running along the wall. The food only took about 15-20 minutes to come out. My plate was a combination plate so it came with the fried tofu, white rice, a small salad, and 2 mini veggie rolls. All the food tasted great! I ate the fried tofu with a teriyaki sauce that was on the table. There was so much food that I brought the rest home. What was convenient was that they serve the plate in a plastic container so all you need to do is ask an employee for a plastic lid and you're set. If I have the chance, I will be going back because of the friendly service and good food. read more

Fast Food and Japanese food had a baby, and it is not pretty. The dressing on my salad greens was closer to watered down, tasteless mayonnaise. The Unagi Don is bland and disappointing with the only upside being the side that comes with the combo. The gyoza, 2 fried potstickers that are juicy inside and filled with flavor, a bright side to a fairly boring meal. My dining companion for this meal ordered a Double Teriyaki Don Burger, where the only flavor to be found is flame grilled. Literally, with the toppings, the gooey cheese, and sauce, the abundant flavor was charred meat that looks like frozen patties you can purchase from a discount store. The flavor starts as a burst, and quickly becomes boring like most of the food we've had, for some reason the Teriyaki burger had NO teriyaki taste, unless you smothered it in the bottles of sauce they provide at each table. The side that accompanied the burger, required no sauce, for the crispy criss cut fries were phenomenal, but who wants to go to a restaurant for sides alone. I don't recommend there complimentary miso, it has an unusual taste. There sushi rolls are neatly wrapped chunks of cheap fish with whatever they decide, because their menu doesn't bother to mention what else they put on the rolls and neither do they. At first when entering the establishment, my interest was in the udon, but when I inquired on whether the soup was just noodles and meat, I was blown off with, "it's a secret blend," & "they make it in the morning." I simply wanted to know if there were additional toppings and had asked again, only to receive the same answers. Japanese Cuisine should be that Cuisine, not fast food. I was so excited that the Teriyaki Don has opened. My husband and I were there last night and had a wonderful experience. He has the Teriyaki Chicken Don and I had Tempura Vegetables and Goyza. The food was delicious! I had an issue with the vegetables due to a couple of Green Peppers so my husband went to the counter and asked for something other than the peppers, and they made me 2 zucchini for the green peppers. First visit. We had the teriyaki bowl, which was grilled chicken over rice, a side salad and two gyoza. It was quite tasty, and freshly made. Also had a side of tempura veggie, which were very good, hot and fresh. The only down side today was that their soda machine was out of order and they gave canned sodas with no glass or ice. Ate here tonight and the service, restaurant, and food were great! The guy who took our order was friendly And answered questions about the menu for us kindly. The restaurant was clean, as were the bathrooms. The server/busser took no time to clean up after some other people that were dining in left. Delicious restaurant. I tried it when they barely opened back in september and didnt think much about it. After trying it again I was surprised to see how much the food quality changed. The teryaki chicken is now the best in town, the new ramen is very tasty. They even added a few new sushi items which I have yet to try.Their salads are also delicious, especially their caesar dressing. The place seems very clean and the service was excellent. Customer service is horrible, they dont keep track of orders, portions are horrible if its not chicken. I ordered 2 beef bowls and both were differently portioned.
