The giant beef rib was to die for: it was so tender that it fell off the bone and it was smooth as butter. The brisket was very good and flavorful, but I was bummed they don't offer a choice between lean and moist (I got lean). La BBQ had better tasting brisket, to be honest. The mustard-based sweet sauce was delicious and went perfectly with both the brisket and rib. The creamed corn I got on the side was incredible! It was sweet and creamy, but not too heavy or salty. The Mac n cheese was okay. It was smothered in lots of delicious cheesy sauce, but La BBQ's was better. The banana pudding was sweet and tasty. Every time I come to Austin I have to get BBQ. In my opinion Austin has one of the best BBQ's out there. I decided to give this spot a try & I'll say I left pretty happy. Shootout to the guy that was cutting the ribs for giving me an extra 1/3 pound of the pork ribs (on the house), that was really nice of you. Here's what I got. *Brisket (Moist)- not bad but not great. The brisket could've been more moist but it wasn't dry. I did see the smoke rings so that's a good sign. Seasoning was fine. 3.5/5 * Brisket Sandwich- Good. Same as above, Wish it was more moist but it wasn't dry either. The bread wasn't my favorite & it needed to be toasted with butter. 3/5 * Pork ribs- very good. Nice peppery rub (maybe a little too much). It had like a beef jerky seasoning (not in a bad way). The ribs fell off the bone which I love & it was tendered. 4/5 * Green beans- Standard & a bit boring in taste but edible. 2.5/5 * Mac & Cheese- it looks good but I thought it was just fair/decent. It didn't have the firmness/bite that I would've like but not bad. 3/5 * Potato salad- solid, pure textbook. 4/5 Overall, I was satisfied, I'll say 3.5 is the score I'm giving them but I'll round it up since the service was fast & friendly. Prices are a bit on the higher end, but I'm not tripping. Will I come back? Yes. Tip: I recommend you coming right when it opens because parking is CHAOTIC. With the amount of traffic that is coming in and out, they need to have more parking spots. I'm glad I came at 10:30am. If you go to Austin and don't have Terry Black's BBQ then you've failed! It's a must! Finger lickin' good! I honestly am not even big on red meat but I devoured everything. The brisket was so tender it melted in my mouth. The sides were all divine and will leave you wanting more even after you're stuffed! My husband's friend since high school took us here for lunch and my goodness, it was awesome! The meat here is very juicy and tender, and my husband's friend says that its because they have it slow cook for 20 hours which is how they achieve that amazing texture. The Dino Rib (beef rib) felt so buttery when you put a piece in your mouth; I have never encountered a restaurant that offers BBQ like this until now. For sides, we got an order of the Mac and Cheese and Mexican Rice, both which were also very good. Since this place is really popular, it does get crowded, and the parking lot is pretty small. We just parked in the park that was located across the street from Terry's, and just paid for 2 hours, which was enough time for our stay there. I highly recommend this place if you are in the area. We have also tried Franklin's in the past, but I believe that this place surpasses Franklin's. read more

Some people dream of jeannie, I dream of Terry Black's sliced brisket -- we like what we like. I'm from California and was visiting Texas for a wedding, clearly I have not had proper (restaurant) barbecue until now -- it's been over a month and sometimes I still fantasize about the brisket. This place gets packed and I mean PACKED, thankfully my friend & I took an Uber so we didn't have to bother with parking (which did not look super fun, if you're planning on driving there) and the line, though out the door & wrapped around the building, moved extremely quick (just make sure you at least have an IDEA of what you want, the employees know how to move a line along) Though we didn't grab any, the first counter when you walk in is to order alcoholic drinks and as you walk through the line you'll be met with lines of merchandise, sauces & seasonings, & other Terry Black memorabilia. There are so many options it's almost impossible to choose. We decided to get one big order which came to a little over $80.00 -- absolutely worth it for the quality of food that we got. You start with choosing your sides then you make your way to the check out counter where they cut the meat for/in front of you depending on how much you'd like to order. Once you grab your tray, you head over to grab utensils, napkins, & drinks -- be aware that you can NOT save seating before you grab your food so plan accordingly. The inside was nice but a little crowded (obviously) and luckily we found a spot outside, there's plenty of seating, the problem lies in everyone knowing how good this place is and taking up the spots! There are a few sauces for you to try (one is a standard barbecue with a little flair, one is one the sweeter side, & the last is on the spicier side if I remember correctly) -- sauces are great but honestly, they're not very needed with how much flavor is in every part of their food. There's also plenty of to go packaging outside and inside (you're going to need it, I promise you) MEAT -- Sliced Brisket -- ($34.98/lb); out of this world, so tender & seasoned perfectly. there was a nice char on the edge which I loved and it basically fell away any time it came into contact with my fork; haven't had any brisket better anywhere else -- 10/10 Pork Ribs -- ($29.98/lb); also amazing and fell off the bone basically as soon as I picked them up, I wouldn't say they measured up to the brisket but they are a very close second -- very good dipped into the sweeter sauce -- 9/10 SIDES -- Mac & Cheese -- (Pint -- $8.50) -- super cheesy, the cheese clung onto the noodle very well which I appreciate but I wouldn't say that it was anything special, not seasoned any particular way but still better than I can say for some places, I'd likely get it again for the sake of how cheesy it is but I would opt for a smaller portion -- 7/10 Pinto Beans -- (5 OZ -- $4) -- they were good, flavored well, a bit smoky but not overpowering and there was a surprising amount of meat incorporated into the broth (wasn't expected but still appreciated), I wouldn't get this again but I can appreciate them -- 7.3/10 Mexican Rice -- (5 OZ --$4) -- this is as solid side to have, a great supplement for the meats & a good complement to the beans -- 8/10 Baked Potato Salad -- (5 OZ --$4) -- pretty good but I think my expectations were a bit too high for this, it's a good palate cleanser of sorts, just creamy enough and a good blend of textures but I wouldn't say it's super memorable or something that I would get again -- 7/10 Cornbread -- ($2) -- definitely a good side to have, she's the three S's -- safe, sweet, & soft -- what more could you ask for? 9/10 Obviously the sides aren't the stars of the show here, the meat is meant to take the spotlight but there are plenty of side options to choose from, it's going to be hard to find something that you don't like! Though I don't know when I'll be in Austin again, this is at the top of the list of places to go when I come back. I was in town for a conference, and being a Texas for less than 18 hours I knew that I needed to head to a place and get some good quality Texas barbecue. Living in North Carolina, barbecue means either whole hog, or pork butts. But I like that Texas style brisket. If you're going, make sure you arrive early. I got there just after opening, and there was hardly any line, apparently this is the Texas thing to do. The brisket was just as delicious as you would expect. The multiple sauces were delicious, each one bringing a different flavor. The tea was fresh and sweet like southern sweet teas is supposed to be. The sides were very average, I got rice and a cornbread muffin. The muffin was actually dry, so average is probably an exaggeration. There was no butter to be found to help make it more palatable. This place seems to be a Texas standard, and it's no wonder. If you're not going to Terry Black's, you're missing out. read more
