Came here based off a review from Mike Chen on Strictly Dumpling from his YouTube channel. We ended up going at a good time because by the time we were finished, the line was out the door and almost near the parking lot street. We got lucky for sure! We came here and we ordered basically the same thing Mike Chen ordered with the exception of the sides and the beef rib. We ordered the pork rib instead. So how it works is you order your sides first and then you choose the meats and pay where you choose the meats. We got three sides: creamed corn, macaroni and cheese, and green beans. I also ordered peach cobbler as a dessert because it's my favorite. If you want bread, onions, pickles... they're complimentary. Just need to ask at the end of the sides line. You can also get cheddar cheese and jalapeños for an extra few cents too! For the meats we absolutely had to try the brisket. We asked for the fatty brisket (honestly, the fattier the better in my opinion). We also got the pork ribs and the jalapeño cheddar sausage. The total came out to around $84! This place definitely was not the cheapest BBQ joint, but I will say it is top tier in flavor! The staff was nice and really helpful, especially if it was your first time. So if you need recommendations, don't be afraid to ask any of the workers! We finally found a place to sit and that first bite of the brisket - OOOH girl! It was so good! I didn't even have to chew! It just melted into pure bliss in my mouth. It was so fatty, juicy and moist, and took little to no effort of eating it. It was that tender. I loved every bite of it and kind of wished we got more. The brisket was the first meat to be finished on our platter. Then the ribs, then the sausage. The pork ribs were fall off the bone tender. Really delicious and a great smokey flavor. The jalapeño cheddar sausage was also cooked to perfection. Very tender, moist, and had that perfect little kick of heat from the jalapeño and balanced well with the cheddar cheese. Everything was just so good! The sides weren't to die for, but they were still yummy and complemented the meats well. I highly suggest coming here somewhat early before the peak hours because it can get insanely busy. Parking is a bit of a problem as well, but you can park across the street and walk to the restaurant, as it's a very short distance - which is what we did. I definitely plan on coming back here next time I visit Austin; mainly just for the brisket. read more

Took a day trip to Austin and decided to hit up this spot. It's a hot spot here because we saw the line out to the parking lot. It was well worth the wait. The food is delicious, and so tasty. Mmmmmmmmm this place is outta this world! I visited Terry Blacks on a work conference while I was in Austin and I regret not eating there every single day! The people are very welcoming and kind. It's a cafeteria style BBQ, so you grab a cafeteria plate and ask the ladies behind the counter what it is you want and they add it to your platter. Be careful because they will seduce you by bringing out big racks of ribs, tri tip and all the good stuff so you order with your eyes and not think of how much $$$ you're about to drop! I ended up with a $160 platter to include beef ribs, tri-tip, jalapeño sausage, baby back ribs, brisket, greeen beans, macaroni, bbq beans, 2 cornbread, picked veggies jalapeños, pickles, banana pudding, and creamy corn with 2 local beers. Man, what can we say about Terry Black's that has t been said already? They are an Austin icon and for good reason! The barbecue is fantastic, but most importantly, it is incredibly consistent. Whenever we have friends visiting, Terry Black's is our go to barbecue spot. They have a line, but it moves quick and I don't think we have ever had to wait more than 30-40 minutes. They also rarely sell out of anything, running like a well oiled machine late into the night. All of the sides are incredible and every meat we've tried has been great and reasonably priced. I know that Franklin's gets a lot of the hype around here, and it is fantastic, but truth be told the meat isn't significantly better than what you can get quickly and easily at Terry Black's, and the sides at Terry Black's come out miles ahead. read more

The brisket melted on my mouth. The pork ribs fell off the bone so easily. And the pickles were some of the best I've had (I'm a sour pickle kind of gal and these were SOUR ). Cornbread was alright (I think I make of better) but the macaroni creamyyyyy and delicious. The whole system of ordering seemed chaotic but the people working there knew how to keep the crowd moving and organized. Kudos to them. Sitting outside in the shade at 3pm was actually nice. There is a line here but it does go fast. Try and go early and not during prime hours and it will be that much easier. My favorites are the brisket, pork ribs, beef ribs and sausage. All the sides (slaw, potato salad, beans) are good. But, the best sides of all that complimented the meal...Banana Bread Pudding and the Big Red. The bbq sauces are great here. First order of business after landing in Austin for a girl's weekend: find some good dang BBQ to stuff our faces! We had a kick-ass Uber driver from the airport to the hotel, who gave us the lowdown on the best places to eat, drink, walk and visit. I took so many notes on my phone, I'm sure I missed some things. But, once we got to the hotel, we were able to look up some of her recommendations, and immediately set out for Terry Black's. The Lyft driver that brought us to Terry Black's praised our choice for BBQ, which made us both absurdly proud (this wasn't our get, as it was) and incredibly hungry. He told us of another really good BBQ place in town but mentioned that the wait can sometimes get up to 4 hours. No thanks. Terry Black's had a line that was almost out the door, but it moved pretty quickly. We stood in line debating what to get (brisket and ribs, plus creamed corn and potato salad as sides) and in what quantity (1 pound of each meat, and the medium size for the sides, because the size difference between small and medium was crazy). We thought we'd ordered too much food, even with us splitting everything. NOPE! We polished off almost everything without blinking an eye. So here's the thing. The food was good. The food was damn good. But was it the best barbecue we'd ever had in our lives? Hard to say, really. Because when it comes right down to it, it's not like we can immediately compare these ribs to ones we've come to love in other places around the country. So, to be fair, I'll leave out as many of the superlatives as I can when describing our meal. The ribs were fall-off the bone tender and had just the right amount of juiciness. They had a crispy shell on the outside and seemed to be coated with a slightly sweet and tangy glaze. It wasn't overpowering, and the glaze's flavor and crunchy texture melded perfectly with the meat. The brisket was also juicy and tender. We got one slab and a couple large-ish burnt ends to share; the burnt ends were better than the regular slab of brisket meat. I think that's to be expected - all the flavor of the meat, liquids and char from the fire lives in the burnt ends, so it's supposed to be bursting with flavor. The sides were also good, though I did prefer the corn to the potato salad. The creamed corn looks like a dessert in pictures, just because it was swimming in so much creamy goodness. I ate way too much of that particular side, for sure. The potato salad was good - cold and creamy, and the potatoes had the consistency I prefer for potato salads, more on the al dente side, not mushy at all. They had three bottles of sauce set on the table, which we both used...in liberal amounts. The meats didn't need the sauces at all, but when one puts bottles of sauce in front of us, we can't refuse, can we? The guys working the meat carving counter were friendly and accommodating to a couple girls who had no idea what they should order. Instead of just nodding along and letting us order too much food, the guy with the knife told us to scale it back a bit and saved us some money. That was appreciated. read more

I LOVED this place!! Seriously the hype is worth it and I loved everything I got. I got a pound of Beef Brisket and ribs which was so so flavorful . We literally ate half of the meat before even trying the sauce which made it even better! The sauce is super tangy. The meat is so tender and super soft. For sides we got the Mac and cheese which was super super cheesy. Potato salad which was creamy and seasoned well. Pickled and bread for the side. And to top it off delicious banana pudding. The banana pudding was absolutely delicious as it was creamy and not too sweet. The price overall was a little but over 128$ which is a bit pricy but you are paying for the quality which is obviously there! It is a great place for a big group of people as we went with 5. But I will say that this place is super super packed! We went on a Wednesday afternoon and it was buzzing with so many people. But even though it was busy we got the food super quick. The service is honestly amazing. One of the members of our group needed a pad and we asked one of the workers. She didn't have one so she went around to ask other workers for us and she really didn't have to! She was so kind and understanding. I didn't get her name but she worked near the bathrooms at the entrance. The decor is very western and very texas which followed the BBQ theme. Would 100% come again if I ever find myself in austin! I feel like it was way more hyped up than it actually is, but we suspect we came at an off time and possibly got an end of a batch (assuming they smoke batches throughout the day). My favorites were the side of beans and jalapeno & cheese sausage. Majority of the brisket pieces were nice, juicy, and tender. Coleslaw was tasty but I would skip out on the less than mediocre mac & cheese. Pork ribs were kind of dry--shouldve definitely gone with the beef ribs. Terry Black's is a qualified contender. It ain't no Franklin's, no matter what their adherents tell you (that's on another level). But their food was very tasty, albeit very expensive. Probably our faves were the ribs and the chopped beef. Their brisket had a great taste but it was drier than we prefer. Need some more fat there. All-in-all, a qualified contender in Austin. They stand out in a city that has so many BBQ restaurants that it pretty much smells like BBQ all the time. That tells you something. read more

I only had it via Door Dash, but OMGGGGG! It was amazing! They packed everything seperatly. Pickles, onions, bread...I ordered a tri tip sandwich, mac and cheese and WOW...the portions were HUGE! It could have been a meal for 2! The Tri Tip was juicy, didn't even need the extra bbq sauce! The Mac n' Cheese was still warm and soooo cheesy!!! DRY MEAT AND RATS RUNNING AROUND I've been coming for years and always thought it was amazing however the last time I attended I paid $113 for the food alone, my cashier was rude and couldn't be bothered with basic questions. What a joke. As far as the food, brisket was so dry and tough that I couldn't even chew it. It's never been like this so I felt the need to communicate to someone in charge (which is nearly impossible to reach costumer service btw) just to let them know. I had to spit it out or choke. The sides where cold AND they were dealing with critters running around inside the restaurant that night. I tried to contact support for a week now and NOTHING....I wanna feel sad to say that I would rather take my service to KG bbq but why feel sad when it's way better food and service by a POC. I don't usually make bad reviews because I am a chef in the industry for 15+ years but man....it was bad. Btw, anyone who got footage of that critter running around inside, please tag me. Best BBQ we've had on our trip to Austin (and we tried quite a few bbq joints)! The setup is kind of cafeteria style, where you get in line to order your sides and meat. You let them know what you want and then they put it on a tray for you. The line was long but they got us through it really fast. We managed to snag a table too. I decided on brisket sandwich with mac & cheese, baked potato salad, and corn bread. The brisket was amaziiiing!!! And the sides were pretty solid too.
