been here twice now. first time i ordered carne guisada enchiladas--which are cheese enchiladas made with monterey jack cheese, then covered in carne guisada. yum! this is served with your typical sides--rice and refried beans. second time I ordered a beef burrito with fajita meat. this was pretty good too but i loved the carne guisada. i didn't try it yet but they also have *chocolate* tres leches cake! sounds good and it's on my list. this place is nothing bizarre or exotic or keep austin weird--just plain jane mexican food that is pretty good. read more

I ate here for breakfast on a Sunday morning and enjoyed my meal very much. The place was almost empty for some reason but I guess it's just the location, a little obscure. As soon as we entered we greeted with a warm welcome and were told about their homemade muffins and tamales that they had available. I ordered two breakfast tacos and a coffee. I didn't order anything complex but my tacos were really tasty and the homemade corn tortilla was delicious. I was almost forgetting about the green salsa! this green salsa was soooo good. good enough to buy and take home with you, which i might do someday. The only minor thing is that my tacos were not as piping hot as I like them to be and no homemade flour tortillas at this place, however I am starting to learn that store bought flour tortillas is just an austin thing. read more

In the city where you can find a Tex-Mex restaurant or food truck on every other corner, this is one place I could honestly take or leave. I wouldn't turn its food down, but wouldn't seek it out, either. I can think of two other restaurants right down the road that I rank higher. That being said, let me share the details: the Taco al Pastor's meat was unfortunately much too dry, but I give them points for adding diced pineapple to the tacos, and not just to the marinade. The usual toppings of cilantro and diced onion were sparse, and they don't make homemade tortillas. The creamy green sauce offered was good, but pretty much the same as you'd find anywhere. The Carne Guisada tacos had good flavor, but the stewed beef was cut into giant chunks (giving you about 2 per taco on a flour tortilla) and the gravy was thin. Maybe a smaller cut would allow the gravy to thicken better as it stews? I did enjoy the cup of salsa we got, and the chips went well with it, but I've seen those same chips at other restaurants (I guess they use the same supplier). The interior of the restaurant is a bit dim, and they have the standard restaurant -supply tables and chairs in their small space. The menu is extensive, so there may be other items I could conceivably rave about. Oh, and their sodas come in either cans or bottles--there's no soda dispenser, though they do have a variety of Aguas Frescas available. The good news is that they offer breakfast all day long, and they are taking orders for fresh holiday tamales--for a whopping $17/dozen! read more

Nice owner. He and his daughter were working the night we went in for dinner. Based on the reviews, I was interested in seeing how his food tasted. The real problem was that the food did not taste very good. Nothing was incorrectly prepared (no under cooked chicken for instance). Instead it was the overall flavor of the food that was disappointing. The cheese enchilada with chili con carne was simply bland and flavorless. The same went for the beans. The flautas were filled with a dry, tasteless chicken. The plate did not include enough guacamole to compensate for the dull taste of the flauta. The chili rellano was the best tasting dish - but it was served with a tomatillo sauce. I prefer a ranchero sauce. But overall it was pretty good. The problem is very simple, there are many better Mexican food options within a few blocks of this restaurant. read more

If you're wanting a great breakfast taco don't pass this place up. Yes we are in Austin and there are 1000 other places to get breakfast tacos but this is one of my favorites. The owner is quick to greet you at the door. The waitresses are quick to get your order and the food comes out quick. But icing on the cake for me wasn't even part of my experience. A gentleman walks in and, while in mid conversation with a friend of his, the owner pauses and greets, by name, the customer. BEST CHILE RELLENO EVER!! I used to live down the street from this little gem, now I live in Dallas but every time I come to Austin I call a good friend to go (who is also a diehard fan and introduced me to it) So that you know I try Chile Relleno every Mexican restaurant I go to and this is hands down the BEST. The perfect texture, the perfect ratio of meat/cheese all I can say is its my favorite. The truth is everything is Excellent here from the salsa to the queso and chips, Oh and recently Flan. Now I didn't get to personally try it because they were sold out but a colleague of mine did and he raved it was probably the best Flan he's ever had! I could go on and on. Carnitas weren't exactly a classic rendition but tender and flavorful - meat cut close against the grain = not stringy. Cheese enchiladas were serviceable. Really loved it. I was in the area trying to find some breakfast tacos and picked this place at random. What a great choice! *pats self on back*. I had the steak-chorizo tacos with the usual refried beans and rice. So so good. The steak was so juicy and tender and the chorizo was had the right color and flavor, delicious and not too strong to overpower the steak. Loved the beans and the rice is among my favorite Mexican rice I've had. Can't say enough good things. I liked the atmosphere and the service was great. Thought I'd try this place out tonight after reading some Yelp reviews. My party of three walked in at around 6PM on a Friday night and were the only folks in the restaurant. Our server/hostess was very attentive and nice. I ordered the Tex Mex enchilladas and a beef fajita taco a la carte (the server showed me the taco a la carte menu). Hubby got the chicken mole enchilladas and a chicken fajita taco. We got the upgraded queso for appetizer and it was really good and so were the two salsas (a regular, smoky salsa and a hot verde salsa). Chips were hot and fresh and our entrees were also good. Reminds me of El Nuevo on E. Anderson Ln. Tortillas were fresh and hot and for dessert we ordered the key lime pie and the tres leches cake (delish!). Just had my first meal at Tex-Mex Joe's and it was delicious! I had the chicken mole and my husband had the green chile chicken enchiladas. The green chile sauce was bright and zippy, which is how we like it. The mole was quite good and served over shredded chicken--I always like that more than chopped or whole chicken breasts, and it works great in a tortilla. The charro beans and rice were spot-on. The crowning glory are their homemade corn tortillas. Worth the drive for those! The place is clean and cheery, and the staff was extremely welcoming. A great way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.
