This place feels like real Texas BBQ ideal for non-Texans. By that I mean, everything is cooked like a high quality Texas brisket, only the best smoked meats here are not beef. Regardless, a full barbecue within Bexar County limits is something to be proud of. What a great little BBQ joint.
The place is located on the Southeast side of the 1604 Loop, just south of the I-10 exchange, in the middle of green grass, and not much else. There's a large ticker tape banner out front, along with some antique gas station decor. It's treads the line between corny and rustic, but it treads it nicely. The people are extra friendly, happy to take my Groupon, and making sure we got the most moist and tender BBQ that they had available. And they even take credit cards!
A breakdown of the BBQ -
Beef - They only sell brisket, and it's not an amazing brisket. It's okay, but even when the cutter made a point to give us the moist fatty parts of brisket, it was still a little on the dry side. This is probably no fault of the place -- I'm still not convinced it's entirely possible for any barbecue joint to have consistently moist and juicy beef without being within earshot of a slaughterhouse, but it's not quite top quality. I could not taste much of anything as far as the BBQ dry rub goes. They do have a spicy and regular sauce, and little containers of what I think is garlic pepper. The sauce is OK, if a little high on tomatoes. Still, I really think the brisket would have benefited greatly from some strong dry rub.
Pork - The real treat here is the pork barbecue, in both rib and tenderloin form. While that might be crazy, considering we're in Texas, it's definitely a Texas-style pork barbecue. The ribs are perfectly tender, dripping off the bone, with just a perfect amount of char on the skin to give it a crispy, salty flavor. The tenderloin is smoked to the tenderness of a pot roast, but with the full flavor that a barbecue should have. It's soft and dripping with juice. Absolutely cannot miss.
Sausage - It's definitely real barbecue sausage here -- well seasoned and chewy. A little too much pork and not enough beef, but that's nitpicking. It's good stuff.
Sides - They offer a lot of different choices here, including two kinds of potato salad, macaroni salid, mac and cheese, and even some green things they call veggies. We had the german potato salad, at the recommendation of the cutter, and it was very tasty.
Dessert - We ordered the peach cobbler, and they gave us some pecan cobbler to go with it, eager for us to taste it. The pecan cobbler is a delicious mix of mushy and crunchy -- just a tad bit too sweet. The peach cobbler is a freakin' awesome way to end a barbecue meal. I will not regret the pure mix of butter, sugar, and peaches that I just finished.
Other - They also offer chicken and turkey. I did not try them.
Overall, this place is a fantastic location for some very very very good barbecue. I might have to try it once or five more times before I'm ready to declare it on the top tier of BBQ joints in Texas, but it's definitely on that borderline. read more
