This theater is everything you could ask for. The only problem is the staff. I stopped going after watching a bartender have a breakdown and scream at a customer in 2017 (based on the screams it was obvious they were acquainted.) I went back for the first time to see the drive in and was disappointed that the same bartender was still there and had no improvement in customer service or personal awareness. We were here for the OCFF showing of Endless Poetry and were pleasantly surprised at how awesome this place is. Along with having a great nolsstalgic vibe inside, there's a full bar, concession stand, and dude selling tacos. There's lots of food and snack options on the same street too. Wow, what a find! Texas Theater is very original. It doesn't cater to mainstream movies. It shows unique fair which is very diverse and best looked up on their website. The theater is old and the seats are uncomfortable, but you overlook as you get lost in the ambiance of the theater. They have a fully stocked bar and great popcorn. I had the pleasure of going to this theater for a movie screening. Prior to that , I didn't know it existed. But it's a beautiful historic movie theater in Downtown Oakcliff. It still retains its original decor and seating, so don't expect plushed seats and carpeting similar to modern theaters. There's a small bar, with great pricing ($3 well drinks!!) and the portions are generous. They also seem to play a lot of independent film. Just a great find for true movie lovers. read more

I think the texas theatre is definitely too cool for me, with its coyly attractive staff, uber hip patrons, and even the spelling of the word theatre. I can't keep up! The interior has a hint of intrigue, with multiple levels for you to wander around. The bathrooms are upstairs, as are some pictures of horses, which I fancy. There is a bar on the main level past the concession stand at the front, and you can get hard liquor, beer, and wine there, at a reasonable price for a theater I suppose, but the mixed drinks are pretty weak and are served in plastic cups, reducing the impact of the otherwise old hollywood feel of the place. Overall a really cute theater, with interesting shows almost every night of the week - worth a visit. read more

The historic Texas Theater in Oak Cliff, Dallas has been saved by a young couple and restored to its former glory, perhaps the most gorgeous art house theater I've seen. The place looks like a giant adobe house when you walk in, and had retro styling and rich colors throughout. Freshly popped non-GMO popcorn, Mexican cokes, and roasted edamame were among the candy concessions, plus a mod themed full bar. Local artists created giant colorful paintings of the 1950's apocalyptic horror genre B-movies throughout. There's also an underground bar and balcony that have yet to be refurbished but I bet they're just as cool. The interior of the theater was massive, seating over 600, and if you didn't know, was the place Lee Harvey Oswald was found after JFK's assassination. "War is Hell", one of the movies playing at the time, has a poster up as you walk in. An absolutely amazing place for my husband's first screening (you can rent the theater for screenings). I'd see movies only there for the rest of my life if I could. read more

Great theater and I am so happy that it is back open and is showing films again. They have a great bar, really nice staff and hold cool events. My only complaint is that the parking is terrible when there's a big event. You should not have any problems otherwise since you don't have to feed the meters after 4. read more

LOVE this theatre! It's got a vintage, classic look to it and im glad it's still there. Sometimes they show the newer releases but they show mostly older movies. Took my kids to see The Amazing Spiderman and they loved the look of the theatre and it's not crowded AT ALL! read more

I am embarrassed to admit that I have lived in the neighborhood over 3 years and just visited this place a month ago. I saw a film on the first visit. Great experience, but a bit cold so bring a jacket. I also learned that there is a stack of blankets at the back of the theater. I should have paid better attention when I walked in! Since then, I have been back a couple times for drinks. Nothing fancy, but it is a great place to actually be able to sit and talk with your friends. Plenty of space and no crowds. We will be back just for that reason. Now that the rest of DFW has discovered Bishop Arts, we are always looking for hidden gems like this that are close to home! read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE! Finally, a theater close to home. Texas Theater is better than Magnolia, Angelika, and Inwood. Love the oldies they play here and the newer stuff too. One of my favorite new places to go to drink. The bartender is awesome. They have a record player there as their source for music most nights so you can BYOVinyl. Yay! Black and White is the well scotch and I have to say, it's quite tasty. As the bartender explained, it was the preferred drink of Dean Martin. They also have a good variety of beers. If you get hungry you can just go get yourself a bag of popcorn at the concession stand or a cup of David Lynch coffe to sober up! read more

A wonderful, iconic theater to check out a movie and soak in some history. Step into the theater and you take a step back in time. While its undergone a variety of renovations over time, it still has that nostalgic feel. The movie posters on the walls are worth a generous look. The chairs were plenty comfortable, the sound and screen definitely sufficient. We were able to catch a $1/ticket movie this past Sunday thanks to the Oak Cliff Cultural Center, which is an awesome deal. Parking was easy on a Sunday afternoon - metered street parking with the option to pay by phone. Highly recommend checking out the Texas Theatre to escape the summer heat, slip into some nostalgia, and enjoy a fun afternoon. read more

A new/old Oak Cliff institution. This place is amidst Quinceañera shops, out-dated storefronts and old school department stores like Levines. The bar area is really more like a postmodern salon or speakeasy, where you can find people eating takeout Church's chicken while discussing nietzsche and film noir. This is a really cool theatre! Its like a museum experience (because of the original decor), a night at the movies and cocktails all in one. They show classic movies but are new to me and to most of today's generation. The seats are old and uncomfortable, but you look past that part because its such a neat experience. I would visit more offten if I lived closer to the Texas Theater. read more

This play was absolutely amazing!!! Fantastic actors/actresses and singers! It was funny and interesting! Family of 8 and all of us LOVED it! I highly recommend. Family friendly and wheelchair accessible. Very patriotic too. The actors/actresses even was outside thanking everyone for coming. It was the best play I've been to. read more

I want this place to succeed, and have been here three times. About the Bar; a normal drink when poured is four counts. When the Bar Tender gives a two count drink, no matter how small the glass, it's a rip off and it makes me angry with the whole establishment. Management, please fix this! read more

Saw a movie today. this was my first time here. Was in a latino neighborhood. Only parking I could find was metered stalls as far as the eye could see. Only 25 cents per hour but only a 2 hour time limit. That was annoying. Movie theater inside was old school. There's only one theater. There was only one employee working and it looked like she did everything - cashier, popcorn maker, projectionist. Inside the theater was pretty big - the actual screen was small and was set above so you were looking up at the screen. I guess with new theaters coming out with stadium seating, huge IMAX screens, etc, you get spoiled but that was not a big deal. Small seats with little legroom. When they have a crowded theater it is probably a pain but there was no one in the showing today. The screen was digital so the picture was good. I think they could have better sound quality though. Overall, it was nice to see a small movie here. only annoying part was the metered parking. I even ran outside in the middle of the movie to feed the meter. I would recommend this place to see a cool movie. read more

I recently screened an independent film I made at the Texas Theater and it was a very welcoming environment and great bar service but during the actual screening the audio of the film was lagging by about 1/2 a second due to the Texas Theaters system when projecting from a bluray and was especially noticeable during fast dialogue scenes. Previously I had watched the screener for errors serval times and after the failed screening watched it again to make sure. There were no issues with my bluray and everything played fine in 3 different systems. It may have been due to the data rate of the bluray being 25 mbps and maybe the Texas Theaters bluray player is older and couldn't handle the data rate or maybe because they run the audio through a seperate system and it slows it down. However it doesn't matter it should work right and didn't and it pulled the audience out of the story and made the story for the audience which was made up of industry professionals hard to follow. I would suggest asking to check how your bluray plays first on their system before you screen it infront of an audience. Other than the slow audio It was a fun event and with the right planning could be an excellent place to screen an independent film. read more

uuuh, wow! i was beyond excited to see a concert here. this was my first visit, but it sure won't be my last. to be the dallasite i am, i'm ashamed i haven't visited sooner! the staff was super friendly, even with how hectic the night was. the theater itself is just beautiful. i love that they left part of a stairwell and one section of wall original. it's great to see. i can not wait to bring folks here for some great movies/shows and drinks! read more

I wish i could give this theater more than 2 stars. If this based only on the historic value, it would be a 5. The staff is rude and unprepared to handle decent size crowds. Ordered a medium popcorn and got half a bag of stale white stuff. I could almost look past the stale popcorn, but having to sit through the disgusting interpretation of Rocky Horror by los bastardos ruined my evening. Time to rethink what groups are allowed to perform in this lovely old building. read more
