It's okay, but not a standout compared to the numerous other Thai place in the area. It's not particularly cheap and the portion sizes aren't large. It doesn't taste that special (not good or terribly bad, just average and unmemorable). The service is actually a bit subpar. I arrived on time and told them I was with a party of 4 under a reservation. They told me I was the first to arrive and waved to the back of the main room generally, and I think they told me I could sit wherever, but it was hard to understand them (both the hostess and the guy behind the bar who checked the reservation name and time in a notebook). I'm not sure reservations are a necessary exercise given the fact that the main room was never more than half full the entire time we were there on a Friday evening. The service is mediocre: plates came out at different intervals such that one of our party had to wait for a couple of minutes for her dish while the rest of us watched our food get cold, and my water glass was only refilled one time, even though we stuck around to chat and wait for a friend to finish her glass of wine. It was really hard to understand the hostess. This is not meant to sound racist or xenophobic, but her spoken communications with us consisted mostly of her repeating our comments back, but not in a way that convinced me she understood what she was saying. I think it was meant to convey understanding, but I was left feeling skeptical. This belief was somewhat validated when she came back to verify what one of our party had ordered and we had to repeat, "Yes, pad thai with chicken, NO shrimp." And this was the same dish that took forever to come out of the kitchen. My pad see ew was okay but far too small in portion size compared to many other Thai restaurant $10 entrees, and it was also way too salty. I disliked the giant chunks of mostly raw garlic included, but at least it made it easy for me to pick out. I ate it all because I was starving today after an awful lunch experience at Bourbon Pub where we basically didn't get to eat lunch, but I certainly don't feel full of satiated. The sole redeeming factor to the meal was that they gave out those tamarind candies with the check. But even paying the check took 10 minutes. I'm not sure I'll return when there are so many better Thai places not far away and so many other good food options to choose from in downtown Sunnyvale these days. read more

The food here is pretty solid, IMO. I've been a fan of their Chicken Pad Thai since as long as I can remember. The food may have been better before they moved to this Murphy location, but I've had very consistent delicious pad thai every time I stop by. I also like their panang curry. Nomsiess. This is a solid Thai place, for sure. I stopped by here for lunch with a friend and her little one after visiting the Farmer's Market on a Saturday. It wasn't terribly busy and they seemed to be fine with the toddler, in spite of him being a bit antsy and climbing all over their front window. I had the Pad Kee Maow with no egg and tofu--I very much appreciate that they have an eggless option on this and some other items, given my allergy--with a Thai iced tea, because I can't seem to ever pass those up. It was pretty much what I expected at the price point given, both flavor-wise and portion-wise, and I see this as a good thing. For lunch, these are pretty reasonable prices compared to other places I've seen. The portion is fairly goldilocks in my opinion, such that you won't feel like you've over-eaten, yet will likely be satisfied after finishing. It's not food to write home about, but it's tasty :) And like so many Thai places, they give the little tamarind candies that I love at the end of the meal :D The service was generally pretty nice, although they did seem to forget my request for chopsticks for almost 10 minutes. First time coming here around 2 pm. They rush everything as soon as you sit down. The chicken curry was average. Their chicken was dry and the curry taste like spicy coconut. The bamboo were hard. Also for brown rice is $1 more. In addition, they bring your check over before you are even half way done with your meal. I paid for my meal while I'm still eating it. Very large portion and very reasonable for $8.95. The service was pretty good. That is until the bill came and went. I should stress after the bill went for a few minutes I unfortunately did not have the exact amount to cover my portion, so I broke out a $20 thinking that I could easily get change. Nope. I would not recommend the Papaya Salad (it had an odd lemony flavor but not-your-normal-lemon-flavor taste to it) and the Pad See Hew was quite bland. Yum! So I was introduced to Thai Basil via a Dishcrawl that I attended. I wasn't that familiar with Downtown Sunnyvale, so that was a great way to get introduced to the area. We started the evening at Thai Basil. I had heard about this restaurant through my sister, who used to go there regularly, when she worked in the area. Indeed, she was right that it was good. The couple who owns this restaurant are cute and very hospitable. Typically, when you go to a Thai restaurant, you are only able to order dishes based on the number of people in your party. So unless you have a big group, it's hard to order everything. But through this dishcrawl, Thai Basil was very accomodating! We each were served a platter that had an assortment of their favorites: Tom Yum Soup, Spring Roll, Salad, Pad Thai, Green Curry, Basil Chicken and Rice. I don't know if you could realistically order such a platter outside of our event, but it was great meal! Everything that I tried was tasty! Thai Basil is definitely on my list of places to go back to when I'm in the area. read more

Finally stepped in here for lunch and wanted to see if they were the same as other locations. Yes and no. They have some tables outside and it's pretty spacious and clean inside. I asked to place a take order with the older female server and she seemed be having a bad day. "What do you want? Did you order yet?".. I asked a simple question about a rice dish.. can they make it a single order vs. the $6.95 for the full. "No!" Ummmk.. So, I ordered my Pad See Eew. While sitting at the bar waiting, I was perusing the menu, the same server above was back facing me working the register. One server was filling water glasses and I wanted to ask to add a small order of rice as well. I tried to get her attention, but to no avail. A few minutes later when I tried to ask her again, she said she heard me (Back up.. You did?! You never even acknowledged me!) and she took the order. By far the greatest Thai place in the south bay. Yes, better than Krung Thai... Can't believe it's getting such low ratings. I love coming here for lunch, they're so fast, and they used to cater my company's lunches. On those days, the food went so fast, you needed to wait in line before the cafeteria even opened. Their Pad Thai is the greatest especially if you like your noodles saucy. Their pad see ewe is good too...as are all their rice dishes. I enjoy everything here! I used to come here all the time years ago when I worked in Sunnyvale. It was our go-to Thai, always crowded. This time we show up at 7pm Sunday evening, it was almost empty. Should have been a sign. The Gai Kai Pra and Pad Thai were standard. Nothing to write home about. The pineapple fried rice also did not taste terrible, but we've had much better at Krung Thai. The curry duck, much better ten years ago. Used to be my favorite, but the duck tasted old. And the special bbq chicken (at the bottom of the specials page for $14.95) we could have lived without. Costco rotisserie chicken was better. Minus one star for adding gratuity for 5 ppl. They just slipped that on the check. Isn't it for six or more? No complaints. The Chicken Satay skewers were cooked well and the peanut sauce was in a ramekin on the side (plus!). The chicken pad see hew (odd spelling) was very good, but it's pretty simple to a Thai place to make. Thai Basil is good for what it is, a simple Thai restaurant. They had paper tablecloths and provided crayons, which allowed the kids to keep themselves occupied while the food was being prepared. Plus! Service was excellent (not in my rating, just wanted to point it out). The Yelp menu is wrong and doesn't include chicken pad Thai or pad see hew, which are two of the more popular Thai orders. Their website is correct however... need to change the Yelp menu (people look at it). read more

Uck. I have had good Thai many times and this place didn't compare on any level. The owners are incredibly sweet and attentive so it's hard to give them a bad rating. Spring rolls were house made not frozen and they were OK. The vegetable dish was soaked in fish sauce and awful. The chicken dish was dry and boring. Thai Basil restaurant (downtown Sunnyvale Murphy St) is much too dark. I did not like that. I could not even read the lunch menu; I had to go outside to read the menu. That is not acceptable. The waitress was completely unaware. When I told her that it was too dark and I could not read the menu, she suggested that I could sit in another dark area. Does Thai Basil cater to young people with excellent vision? When I was young I could read in dim light, but not now. That feels like bigotry to me. A restaurant should create an environment that makes ALL customers feel welcome. One nearby table of 3 customers had to ask for a waitress. She had not come by to take their order. That is not good. I was ready to pay. The waitress walked by and did not even look over to take my money. I had to call out to get her attention. I doubt that I will ever return. A-Okay ! MUCH BETTER SERVICE than Siam Taste. I swear, you would think that their staff is auditioning for a role as a Zombie from the Walking Dead series... HOWEVER, Thai Basil staff = Amazing. The service is great. Our table had been quickly seated, water + menus promptly received & and drink orders taken without a moment's lost. It had been a lovely day outside - as there is an ample amount of outdoor seating - our waiter provided + prepared a table. Though the service is not as prompt outdoors as it inside of the restaurant, we did not have to wait long to be noticed of when we were in need. Lunch prices are inexperience. Portion size will leave little to a moderate amount for an additional meal for later if desired. Cook time is 8 - 15 minutes depending on dish (moderate size crowd - didn't appear to be too busy) The Pad Thai had a little too much salt for our taste. The curry had an extra kick - do be sure to specify your preference of spice - A little extra never did too much harm to me; but, Thai Basil is a bit on the spicy side. I tried the Chicken Basil, and was surprised to find that my meal was not very spicy. In fact, probably the strongest element of the dish was some form of sugar. This place is great for lunch, with a cheapo lunch special menu. As some have mentioned, the selections are not as extensive as their dinner menu, but you do pay a few bucks less for the same dishes if you find something you like. I've come here many times with just 1 other person, and the service is pretty average. I did come twice with big groups, and the service differed quite a lot between the two experiences. The first time the server was extremely efficient, and everyone got their food/drink accurately and quickly. The second time (now in their new Murphy ave location) we got some orders wrong and had to wait a while to get people to notice us (to bring the bill, water, fix wrong order etc). The girlfriend and I just moved out to Sunnyvale and decided to take a stroll to see what Sunnyvale had to offer. We stumbled upon through a cute little area of restaurants known as the Historic Murphy Avenue. We had the urge for some curry and decided to try 1 of the 3 Thai restaurants in the area. I tried the red curry with coconut milk and roast duck while my girlfriend had the yellow curry with chicken. Since our dishes is off the lunch special, it came with a small portion of curry, a bowl of white rice and a small helping of salad. The salad looked like express salad from a bag, thought they should try to disguise it a little better next time. My bowl of curry had a generous helping of slice roast duck and the sauce was sweet to my liking. Not bad for the first restaurant we tried in Sunnyvale. I woke up in the middle of the night with really awful stomach cramps, nausea and diarrhea. My friend didn't get sick so we figured the chicken had been sitting out too long. Before this experience, I had ordered take out a couple times. I never got sick but the food was below average and one of the dishes had smelled & tasted strange so I didn't end up eating it. This is my favorite Thai restaurant. They have authentic dishes cooked very carefully, and the service is always great. When asked, the manager always has the right suggestion of which dish to pick that day. Last year I went here for a lunch date. Had the Fried Shrimp Rolls, Shrimp Pad Thai, & Chicken Fried Rice. Fried shrimp rolls seemed overcooked to me first bite had a burnt flavor. Plus was it was piping hot. Next was the chicken fried rice which they took off the bill. Chef did not come out to ask what was wrong. Waiter added if they could cook another one or something else we declined they just took it off bill. Rice was cold as well. Pad Thai was cold as if it were sitting air a long time. Not sure what they need to do but management needs to look into their service here and make some changes.
