I ordered the tiger roast chicken and thai iced tea. Although the tiger chicken was one of their specials, there was absolutely nothing special about it. Chicken was too dry with very little flavor. Thai Basil is a great spot for lunch. It has a lot of seating so the wait is never too long. I'm a big fan of the green curry even thought it's always on the edge of being too spicy (and I like spicy.). The pan fried noodles with beef was dead on with the spices, The hotness level was dead on I wanted spicy and it was SPICY! only giving you 3 Stars as the service was poor, the waiter forgot to put in my order and the one table next to me also waited forever. Used to come here for lunch since this is fairly close to work and I remembered it used to be pretty good. However, took my in-laws to eat after Farmer's Market today (Sat) and I am very sure I won't be coming back anymore. The place was quite empty at 12:30 which should have struck a bell... Food tasted way too sweet and more importantly not very fresh. The larb salad came with wilted lettuce and cabbage that colored the veggie orangeish... Yuck... I feel terrible feeding my baby in my tummy with such crappy food. I should have read other Yelper's review and photos on the Tom Yum soup... Man, that definitely was no Tom Yum... The soup is clear white broth with crispy onions, tomatoes, mushroom and shrimp. It came as single serving at $7.95 for shrimp option. What a rip off!! I wouldn't have mind paying for it if it tasted anything close to an average Tom Yum. We also ordered pad kee maw and Pad Thai... Both of them tasted way too sweet. Not bad, but I've had much better Thai food before. The fried rice which I chose with the grounded chicken option was actually somewhat disappointing. I didn't think much of the grounded meat at first but it really wasn't that great. I also tried the Kai Ka Prow shrimp and I wasn't too impressed with that either. I feel the main thing this restaurant has over the other Thai restaurants on Murphy Ave has to be the price, but the other Thai restaurants have better quality entrees. This place is always so empty... which confuses me cause the restaurant down the street has a 45 minute wait. I think they should do something to entice the crowd and make their location known. Maybe some Thai music, waitresses in traditional Thai outfits? IDK... but I would love to see this place do better. This place is ok, nothing wowed me. It's your typical thai place, but I have to admit the prices are very cheap for lunch time. You can get salad, rice, soup & small entree for $6-$7. Or you can get a big pad thai for $7 or $9 with prawns. The service was also good for us, maybe because it was an early lunch. Although the food was good, I gave this restaurant one star because of the service. A party of seven people arrived at the restaurant this evening and they sat us down, and told us to quickly order because they were closing the kitchen. Service was poor. We placed our orders and when they brought us the food, two of our dishes were missing the accompanying white rice. "We ran out" was their excuse. If they waiter knew they didn't have white rice to serve our dishes, they should have informed us before sitting us and also before ordering. Yet another restaurant in the "work lunch" list. But this one i've actually gone to! When we get takeout for work lunch, I almost always get Pad Kee Moaw with tofu. I love anything with noodles and add tofu and basil and I am one happy person. I know i've gotten Pad Thai here before but I don't remember it. I guess that could be a good or bad thing. It's okay... i'll keep ordering Pad Kee Moaw because I know it's good. The one time I came here for dinner, someone else did the ordering so i'm just going to have to guess on what we got. I know for sure we got Ka Ree Kai with chicken, Panang Neua, and (I think ) Ka Prow Muak. The food was really good but as we were waiting for the dishes to arrive, we couldn't remember her asking us how spicy we wanted to dishes. Luckily it wasn't too spicy... we could still survive. "Hunger is the best chef," so the saying goes. The people at Thai Basil must know this well, because it took probably 20 minutes to get our dinner entrees tonight. This was on a Wednesday night with half the restaurant empty, so I don't know what took so long. Perhaps they wanted us to stare at the "Best Thai Restaurant in Silicon Valley 2003" stickers that were on the windows. I guess they haven't won any more awards since then. The mixed vegetables in green curry and the seafood basil dishes, when they arrived, were very good, because this was probably because we were very hungry by then. In hindsight, the food was nothing special, pretty representative of any generic Thai restaurant. I remember that the place was fine for their lunch specials but this is the first time I'd been back in a few years. Been there twice. Dinner was good. Lunch was unimpressive. The pad thai I had for lunch was just a bunch of noodle with ketchup (oh yes, an a couple of small tofu cubes). The service was okay. The food on the other hand needs some help. The portions were a little on the small side. Half of my party (2 guys) were still hungry by the time we finished our lunch. In fact, before they even finished they were making plans on going to costco for some hot dogs as a snake. I got the green curry with chicken and even at first glance I knew it is gonna get interesting. They put green beans and green bell peppers in the curry. But after simmering the sauce for who knows how long, the green veggies were this ugly pale yellowish color... The curry itself was overly sweet and lacks the depth of the normal green curries. Lastly, the "salad" that came along with the meal was some shredded iceberg lettuce with some carrot on top. Today I went to Thai Basil for the second time. Both times, I went for lunch in a group of 6-8. This place is on the corner of Murphy Street (parking lot in back) near the Firehouse Grill and Tao Tao. I saw some things in the other reviews here that I need to set straight. First, the lunch menu is small - this is true - but that's because it's a *lunch* menu... yup, you can also order from the full (dinner) menu. Check the website for details - pretty standard Thai options. Second, the reviewer who says there's no spice is NUTS. I had the green curry with tofu (offered on the lunch menu with chicken or beef ... but they'll happily make it veggie) and it was not mild, to say the least. They don't ask how hot you want it, so if you're not up for the heat you have to bring it up. Both times, the food was good. Not great, not terrible. Hence the three stars. The pineapple fried rice was four stars, and a lot of food. The lunch curries (red or green) come in a small-ish bowl (about right for lunch) with rice and salad. Flavors are ok. The pad thai (also a large dish) was overly sweet. Service is ok. They were busy when we went today and we got seated right away, which was great - the food also came pretty fast. They write your order number on the paper table cloth where you're sitting, which makes it easy for them to match you to your food, but feels weirdly impersonal. We had a hard time getting the attention of one of our servers even when she was nearby, and in general the service was kind of uneven. In sum, three stars. read more

Disappointing. We decided to try out the place after hearing from random sources that it was pretty good. I'm now trying to remember who these sources were! The menu for dinner was on the small side and didn't allow for much variety. We are frequenters of Thai Pepper, so we were used to more of a selection. We ordered the honey chicken (which sounded delicious) and the basil beef (one of our staples when ordering Thai). The honey chicken came skewerd and looked like it should have been cooked more. It was cooked thoroughly, but the appearance set me off a bit. Taste was ok and I ended up letting the boyfriend finish it off (he'll eat anything). Even he said it was just ok. The basil beef was much better. The beef was ground, had a kick of heat to it and a plethora of fresh basil mixed in. Needless to say, that plate was cleaned by both of us. Rice comes in single serving bowls that verge on the small side. I much prefer Thai restaurants where it is served in a larger pot/bowl to share. We ran out of rice fast. Thai iced tea wasn't bad. Service was ok. We were seated right in the front window, sort of away from the center of everything, so maybe we were forgotten here and there. Also, for it being a Friday night right at the dinner rush, the place was NOT hoppin'. My suggestion is to try Siam Taste down the street towards the other end. read more

Visited this place last night. Not much going on in terms of ambience, but good food. Had green curry chicken with brown rice, pineapple fried rice and the pad thai. All was good. The pad thai had the correct amount of moisture and the pineapple fried rice had the right balance of sweet and spice. My other favorite thai restaurants are Amarin thai in Mountain view and Saby thai in SJ. The food is comparable to both. Very well priced. read more

I came here with my girlfriend and my old boss to have lunch a few days ago. Upon arriving to a busy house my ex boss was able to hold down a table for us early and as we strolled in we were pleasantly surprised that the staff was kind enough to seat us without us all being there at the same time. Our orders were taken within adequate time after seating, it gave us time to catch up and just enjoy the ambiance and overhear other people's conversations. For lunch I decided to try the Thai basil with beef, a bowl of the combination seafood coconut soup and a Thai iced tea to drink. The food came out warm but not piping hot like how I usually get at other Thai restaurants. The coconut soup had lots of goodies in it; 2 types of mushrooms, a prawn, a mussel, a scallop, onions, squid, fish, etc. Aside all the goodies it was lacking in the flavor and heat departments. Overall for the soup probably not worth the hefty $6/bowl price tag. My lunch entree on the other hand was something I didn't expect. When it came out it looked like the beef was ground up chuck versus the beef you get in your curries and so forth. Still I enjoyed the flavor and after mixing it with the steamed rice it was like a fried rice dish. Easy to eat and understand. Flavors were nice but not amazing. After covering the tab for all which included; 2 Thai iced teas, a Thai iced coffee, red curry lunch, Thai beef basil lunch, beef fried rice, papaya salad, coconut combination seafood soup and a tom yum soup, it ended up being $60. Not bad considering the entrees were really inexpensive at around $6-$8. The appetizers/soups on the other hand were quite expensive for what they were, being as costly as an entree for some. Still this place isn't horrible, I just don't see myself going out of my way to have lunch here when there are other more memorable Thai places. I came here for lunch on a Friday for lunch with a colleague. The place was pretty busy. We were seated right away, water bought to us and someone came by to take our order. I ordered a tom yum soup and colleague ordered the pad Thai. This ends the good portion of the review. We waited for half an hour before the pad Thai showed up. Understandable as the place was busy. But even after 50 min, there was no sign of the soup and the server didn't come to check on us once. All efforts to get he attention of any server went in vain and the one time I did check for my food they pretended to be inconvenienced, on me asking for my food! Ultimately, my colleague finished his food and the server brought the check and atill no sign of a soup! After asking her multiple times she finally brought my soup. I can understand that places can get busy at times, and orders lost- but a decent restaurant would atleast try to apologize for the inconvenience. Not only did they not do that., they made me feel crappy for even asking about my food. If you can't handle the crowd, maybe try setting up fewer tables. If you were thinking of eating here, pls do yourself a favor and go to ANY other restaurant on Murphy st. Won't guarantee the food, but atleast the service would be much much better. read more

Love the yellow curry, rice noodle w tofu dishes, spring rolls always done vegan for us. We love Jua the owner who for years (if he's there) comes out and greets us and will even join us. Went to this place today for a business lunch with three other people. After waiting more than 30 minutes for our food and noticing people who came in after us that had already finished eating, we asked one of the waitresses how long it would be until we get our food. We were met with the stone cold glare of Asian hospitality and had our food about five minutes later. All of us ordered mild-spiciness but all of our meals came too spicey. Hair in my sour papaya salad. Two of my fellow diners had vinegary pad thai. One had a watered down curry, another had something that looked like a thin potato soup, and another a funky tofu salad. Tasty, great service, and well priced for lunch. Our food came out fast (but not scarily fast :P) I got the red curry and really enjoyed it. The portions are not as big as some Thai places that I've gone, but it was fine since it was probably a lunch-portion. My friend got some sort of fried rice (it wasn't on the menu, but they were happy to make it for him). I didn't try because it had nuts, but it was a huge plate and looked really good. Went here several times, for business. Aside from one day that was unusually noisy, the place is quiet, and you can have a good business meeting. Sit towards the back, but not near the kitchen are, to avoid street noise that comes in through the door and utensil rattling sounds. FOOD: THE PORTIONS ARE small. LIKE, HUNGRY-AFTER-TWO-HOURS small. Perhaps they're bigger if you order the $15 instead of the regular $11 plates, but we haven't tried that. On the good side, water refill is prompt and they don't mind if your dinner extends after their closing time of 9:30pm on weekdays. I ordered their specialties and was not disappointed: 1) Tiger Roast Chicken - very well marinaded and fragrant plus the skin was crispy and the meat was juicy. 2) Topped Salmon - the braised salmon is braised and topped with sauce which wasn't too sweet. 3) Duck Curry (hot) - rich and tasty 4) Tod Man (fish cakes with kaffir lime leaves) - many non-Asians will not try "fish cake" but if you like the citrus flavor of kaffir lime then do not miss this appetizer. Not bad, but not what it used to be... I've been coming here for well over 10 years and unfortunately, not the same. We've ordered the basics for years, Thai Fried Rice with ground pork and Chicken with Green Curry. The flavors aren't quite the same. The fried rice isn't as tasty and they really pile on the bell peppers and onions. And the curry is especially watery, lacking in some of the complex flavors (seems light on the fish sauce and coconut milk maybe) and the jasmine rice has consistently had too much water so it's mushy. But I will say the Pad Thai is still a winner, so worth the 3rd star. We come here and have these as lunch specials normally. The cost is pretty reasonable, food can be ordered online, and they did a nice job of remodeling a few years back when they took over the old bar that used to be next door. Service actually seems to be better/faster since they closed the other locations. I'd probably still come back for a few dishes (asking for less of the fillers) but there are now lots of options around the area that are worth trying out. read more

Walked by many times. We had the Red curry combo: your choice of meat, chicken, pork, beef or tofu; comes with side salad and rice. Shrimp is a buck more. The tofu was the firm type and went well with the red curry, included were bits of carrots and veggies. All in a mildly yummy hot spicy red curry. I went there with my colleagues for a Friday lunch. Ambience was good for office get togethers and it's located in a nice area that reminded me of Santa Cruz / Los Gatos downtown. Food was very average , we each ordered diff food so that we could try many items and almost all of them were super spicy. Dessert (fried banana ) was good. If you're looking for great Thai Food at a decent price then this is where you want to go. There used to be 2 locations in Sunnyvale, but since the Town & Country Village was being closed they now have the location on Murphy Avenue only. Keep in mind that there is a serious lunchtime rush in this particular area, so it can get REALLY crowded and you may need to wait a bit. I personally think it's worth the wait, but if you're really on a time crunch, they do take orders over the phone. I normally get the same few things when I come here -- I can never get enough of what I love :). Make sure to start off with a Thai Iced Tea, it's the best! I would suggest their Kai Kra Prow and their Yellow Curry (haven't yet come across a yellow curry that is better), which are both on the lunch combination menu. The Thai Basil Style Fried Rice, Pad Thai, and Pad See Hew are awesome as well. Again, if you're willing to wait during lunch then I HIGHLY recommend it... it's not so busy during dinner. read more

It's cooked in a yellow curry sauce with bell peppers and pineapples. It's got a nice spice to it. My friends that are bigger eaters have a problem. They always order an extra order of rice to share. So it's been years since my National days that I've eaten here. The restaurant was nice and clean. Ended up ordering the shrimp salad, which was way too fishy (too much fish sauce), the chicken pad thai was decent (can't really go wrong) - need more flavor though, and lastly the stir fried beef with onions and bell peppers (the beef was kind of dry).
