it's been a while since I've gone to Thai Basil. When you have a young kid and they go through picky stages you find yourself not going to a local favorite for years. Well, we finally reached a point in time where we could take our 7 year old out to Thai and it was a solid hit. Is this the best Thai restaurant? No. But what it is and why I'm rating a 5/5 is for the following: Even though they don't have a kids menu they were accomodating with their food/spice levels. Their food choices are solid, affordable, and consistent. Even though it's been over 7 years, my favorites are still solid quality and tasty experiences. The service is fantastic; they were thoughtful in the seating and added another table so we'd have room for dinner and they regularly checked in on us and refilled our water. The ambience is on the darker side, but I love the aesthetic with lots of interesting memorabilia to look at. The one request I'd have is for them to remodel/fix the women's bathroom. The flavors for this Thai place are on point. We travel and eat at a lot of Thai restaurants. Atmosphere is great for a Thai date night. Service is great and the price is awesome in this economy! To be fairly honest, I was quite skeptical about this place, given the 3 stars it had overall. This is one of those cases where you shouldn't judge a book by its cover or in this case by the amount of stars. Every dish I ordered pack so much flavor, given I was the only ordering for myself.. I had the Tom yum, not typically how I usually would have it, but man was it good. Ordered the shrimp rolls,crab fried rice, tamarind prawns and spicy catfish. This review is long due! If there were 7 stars, I'd give that to Thai Basil :) We have been eating at Thai Basil for years and the food and service never fail to amaze us. Being vegetarian Indians, we have limited food choices but the choices and flavors at Thai Basil are great! Uomi now recognizes my number when I call her and greets us with a warm attitude :-) She knows my order and is always open for making requested changes! Authentic food + great customer service! Second time here and the service continues to be excellent. The staff are very attentive. The food has been good both times. This most recent experience we ordered a beef dish with vegetables which was good, but the veggies were cold. We also ordered a peanut chicken dish which wasn't my favorite, I'm my opinion the sauce was too heavy and the dish didn't taste good by itself. We wanted quick Thai food for dinner tonight. It was quick, but this place has really gone downhill. I got Panang curry with chicken. The sauce was super watery, and didn't taste like a good curry. I had tons of watery sauce left over when the small portion of chicken and red and green bell peppers were gone. Also got a papaya salad, which also had a ton of watery sauce left over at the bottom of the container. My partner had the Monterey Catch seafood dish. She said it was okay, but more spicey than medium at other places. I think it's safe to say that we're done with Thai Basil. It's close by, but truly mediocre. I got the Thai iced tea, Red curry, Basil Fried Rice, and the Spring rolls. I absolutely loved the red curry, Thai food is my favorite cuisine and this definitely did it justice! The food is very bad. I suggest staying away! The Pad Thai was made in advance , packed in plastic containers, and microwaved. The end result is hard-packed, rubberry, noodles. Worse, it's not even pad Thai. The noodles are thin and round, not at all like the traditional, flat noodles used in real pad Thai. This was more like Chinese chow mien topped with four, insipid, boiled shrimp and a few rotting broccoli stems. There is none of that tangy tamarind & fish sauce taste, no green toppings nor wedge of lemon, nor chili to sprinkle for added flavor. The end result is a rubbery mess that could have easily been obtained from a factory vending machine and microwaved to infinity. We didn't eat this, we tasted it, and we threw it away. Oh man was this one was really bad. We have not had a meal this bad since our 'golden steer" disaster many years ago. I was leery of the 3 stars it was sporting and truth for us was much much worse. Allow me to explain. First off the service was at best indifferent to poor. Look it happens but when your drinks are served almost 10 minutes after the party that sat down 10 minutes AFTER you its bad. Mind you it was at best at maybe 30% capacity. Having to flag down the bus person to get checks etc? not good. Dropping the mains halfway through the apps? No bueno either. Chicken Satay: Greasy and the chicken was inconsistently heated through. This would become a theme as almost everything ranged from lukewarm to outright cold. A bit on the bland side it really was Meh. It also had the sad honor of being the best thing we had. The peanut sauce also had a layer of grease on it and was neither peanuty nor flavorful it was just kind of there. The cucumber/red onion quick pickles were okay Papaya Salad: Again wow really bland. The salad making had that tired translucent quality to them and the dressing again was flavorless. It was as if the salad had been held over from yesterday If the apps were bad the mains were a disaster: Cashew Chicken: Small portion size aside this one was particularly egregious. The chicken was un seasoned and had that "Just been microwaved" chewiness to them. Worse yet, some pieces were luke warm others were bordering on cool. The only way this happens is from a microwave. The cashews had that texture and quality to them suggesting they had been in the sauce for some time. The sauce was thin and unappealing. This whole thing screamed food service product from a bag. Even the rice was inconsistently warm. Pro tip if you are nuking food, get one of those turn tables so at least it consistent on the warmth. Pad Thai: yet another horror story. Bland and flavorless with these weird bits of un-melted gelatinous stuff that may have been onions??? Even the green onions ranged from small slices to one piece over 3 inches long and yep cold. Did I mention bland and flavorless? With basil in the name you would expect some basil as garnish no? But we got spinach and one piece had some grit as a bonus. We ordered the Thai Basil fried rice with shrimp, drunken noodles with beef, and shrimp rolls. Everything was pretty tasty; tasted just like this other Thai restaurant I used to go to back in SoCal. I also really appreciated the side chili bowls that I could use to make my dish spicy. Note: the dried chili flakes are SPICY but so good with the food. Wow...talk about YUM! This place is absolutely incredible! I loved their Thai Basil Fried Rice w/ Chicken. I asked them not to make it spicy and preferred not to have chili mixed in and it still tasted amazing!
