The thing I love about Thai Canteen is that I just can't not be in the mood for it. They serve up some bomb noodles (pad kee mao!), the green curry (with eggplant of course) makes my eyes roll back every time, and if it's a cold, soup-kind-of-day, the gkuay dtiow reur will get rid of that chilly feeling in a flash :) I'll always end up getting dessert since I only carry card & there's a small surcharge for purchases under $10, but I'm not gonna complain because they have some kickass ice cream flavors :D Beats Sugar Daddies ice cream any day! The other desserts are meh, sticky rice became overwhelmingly sweet after a few bites and the bittersweet dessert looks like...well just look at the picture of it and you can see what I mean. That being said, it took me many tries to find dishes I like. The pad thai is much too greasy and sweet, the pad see ew seemed as if it was soaked in soy sauce for days, and the panang curry just didn't do it for me. I was just visiting Davis when I found this place. Wasn't expecting much, but the food is quick, nicely portioned, and delicious! The fried duck skin and curries are my favorite. Happy Hour M-F 3-6PM $1 Thai Iced Tea in cute mason jars!! They have a few appetizers discounted too such as roasted peanuts, marinated pork, deep fried fish balls. They have a bar area that serves sake and beer. Plenty of self-seating for small and big groups. Relaxing atmosphere to chill with friends. The food aside from HH is mediocre, not authentic nor that good. Its next door to the theaters parking lot and sugar daddies (where you can get $1 scoops on Monday). read more

Food is alright here but I went there twice and both times I went there the service was terrible. The first time I went there, there was no one else picking up food and it was my first time there and they had a horrible attitude and mumbled so I could barely hear them. The second time I went, I saw a customer walking out of there with an angry and confused face. I went in to pick up my food and I could see why that customer was making that face. I went in and same thing as the first time, I was met with bad attitude and felt like I was being rushed out of there even though, they were not busy. After these two attempts to give them business, I dont think I will ever go there again in the near future. The unecessary attitude is the reason why I will not go back there. Definitely not AUTHENTIC Thai cuisine but it's pretty damn good and affordable too! This place is always bustling with customers. The decor inside is hip and modern, it makes it very inviting. It's not a full service restaurant so be mindful and get your own water, condiments, etc. I've tried the pad Thai, duck over rice, curries, noodle soups, and more and everything is delicious! The Pad Thai is just how I like it; al dente noodles, not too sweet or sour, and tons of peanuts and bean sprouts for texture. They also have a great selection of beers and other alcohol. My friends and I like to take advantage of their Happy Hour which is from 3-6pm. The service here is good, though the food comes out really slow most of the time. I honestly don't know what it's called but they always know what I'm talking about lol. I love the fact that there's a thai restaurant in Davis that's actually opened till 2 in the morning. It's very convenient for us starving college students that need to stay up to study. Why not take a study break and have some delicious pad thai? Oh yeah, there's actually a student discount after 10PM if you show them your Aggie card too. ;) - This restaurant has a great selection of food including a good amount of dessert items. The food here tastes authentic which makes everything taste so much better. The pad thai is something I highly recommend (with a glass of thai tea of course). Yay! I'm a fan. My friend loves this place and I finally tried it yesterday. I now understand why she goes there so much. I love how they dont close until 2AM. I went on a Friday night around 10 PM and the place was filled with people. The atmosphere is nice and the modern decor is really cute as well. I love how the prices are cheap for the quality and amount of food that you get. We had the pad see ew, the duck noodle soup, the salt and pepper calamari, and the thai iced tea. Everything was really good except for the calamari. I feel like they might've fried it for too long because the batter tasted like the batter of some fried chicken. Nonetheless, it was still a very good meal and it filled both me and boyfriend up. We took the duck noodle soup home because we couldnt finish it. Davis is known for cows and having an unreasonable amount of Thai restaurants. Thai Canteen is probably the most "college friendly" vibe wise. They have a decent happy hour and they're always busy around dinner time. You order first, get a number, and your food comes out in about 20 min. They get a lot of take out orders which can make the whole ordering and dining process slow but oh well. My four stars is ONLY for the honey roasted duck egg noodle soup, bamaee bpet yang (I think) it's #25. I've gotten it twice within the past two weeks and unfortunately each time I got it it tasted slightly different. Some inconsistencies there. The first time the broth was overly sweet but still tasty and the noodles were stuck together, again still tasty. But this last time I got it the broth was less sweet which was great and the noodles seemed a bit different. The egg noodles were a bit thinner but not stuck together which was nice. The soup comes with lots of pieces of duck, really soft and flavorful. They're also generous with the bok choy and portion size. It's a big bowl and will fill you up. While I've had better noodle soups elsewhere, this is by far the best soup dish in Davis. The ramen and pho in Davis is pretty underwhelming, so this one stands out flavor wise. I've tried some other dishes as well like the standards pad thai, pad see ew, and some appetizers and it's all great. Thai iced tea and coffee are decent as well. I love this place. Davis is filled with Thai food places. I know this and I don't even live in Davis. But this place is my favorite of them all. My friend likes the pad see ew here. She gets it every time we come here. It's really good. The pad thai here is really good too. It's kind of spicy, but really good. I personally like to try different kinds of food. I tried their green curry fried rice. It's literally green curry fried rice. Nothing more to it. But it's really good. It's the perfect amount of spicy. After I ordered this, my friend started ordering this. I also tried one of their other dishes. I forget the name of it, but it came with a meat, rice, and a peanut curry sauce. It was extremely peanut-y. I personally liked it because I like peanut and it was creamy. However, it was really heavy because it was so creamy. I also love their Thai tea here. It's delicious! I knew I was getting boba later that night, but I couldn't stop myself from ordering their Thai tea. If I lived in Davis, I'd probably come here all the time. read more

This is the place to go for Thai food in Davis now. I've been to Sofia's, Ket, Thai something....all balls compared to this place. Sofia comes a close second because of their bottomless Thai iced tea, more so for making my eager friend sick from drinking all that Thai iced tea, Aha. There are items here you may not find at the other places, such as the pork belly stir fry, which happens to be my favorite dish from here. The pad thai is a bit too sweet for my tastes, so is the duck over rice...which is why I don't ever get them. Aside from the good food, the decor and seating arrangement is informal, pick your spot in the brightly decorated and lit room and simply plop yourself down and don't forget the corresponding number they give you with your order. The prices here are fair, too...which is why I also place is above the other Thai restaurants in Davis. The one downside, which can be a pretty huge downside...is the pace at which food leaves the kitchen. Dear lord...it can get pretty unbearable, especially if you arrived there borderline starving. That's for any typical evening, on crowded evenings....@_@, I'd have to seriously reconsider if I saw a huge line and filled restaurant prior to entering. Came in with my dad around 7:10 PM after driving back up to Davis~ it was pretty crowded since it was move in weekend. Luckily there was not much of a line when my dad and I came, so we ordered and sat down fairly quickly. The restaurant is sort of like a fast food style since you have to order at the register. We shared the tom yum soup, beef salad, pad Thai, and green curry fried rice. Most of the dishes were under $10. :) Tom yum soup: 4/5 pretty spicy, it had mushrooms, tomato, and chicken, pretty filling. Beef salad: 4.5/5 my favorite dish! The beef is perfectly cooked, and the dressing was refreshing. Perfect on a hot summer day. Came with half a lettuce. Pad Thai: 3/5 pretty big portioned. I don't really like pad Thai since its a bit too sweet for me. My dad really liked it though. It came with a side of toasted peanuts and bean sprouts. Green curry fried rice: 4/5 tried something new today and I'm glad I chose this dish! Was perfectly spicy and hot! Loved the combination of pork and bell peppers. The cucumbers were kind of unesessary, but I'm glad I tried something new. Would definately order again. Not the best Thai restaurant I've been to. I'd like to review 2 things. First I'd like to review their ice cream. It's pretty good here. They have an array of Asian flavored ice cream such as Taro, Lychee, Red Bean, and things of that nature. The ice cream is very rich and creamy with the perfect amount of sweet. You can get (I believe it's) 2 scoops for like $2.50 or $3. I had some with a friend and it was so nice and pleasant. Granted they were sort of busy at lunch and it took a little longer than I would have liked for someone to scoop and serve me ice cream. I would definitely return for the ice cream. The second thing I would like to review was a dish that was essentially "Sweet and Sour [Pick Your Meat]." I got it with their beef. It was absolutely disgusting. The weird slices of beef were breaded and deep fried. The worst part of it, other than being too sour, was that the beef was disgustingly salty. It's as if they either have no idea how to season their meat or they were using a bunch of leftover beef they had to salt to mask that it was spoiled. The random vegetables in that dish were fine in terms of texture, but the sour sauce was disgusting. The rice was fine, but no amount of rice could mask that god awful dish. I'll take the blame for making the mistake of ordering the wrong thing. A wise man once told me that if you're going to get Thai food, you should definitely order Pad Thai. But why even bother then? I The yellow curry is average tasting here but I've had other dishes that are so worth the try! My husband and I love the Pad Priew Wan It has: Sautéed tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumber, green onions, and pineapples in sweet and sour sauce! The inside of the restaurant is gorgeous and has plenty of seating. If you feel like having a bit more privacy, there's a patio out front with stringed lights! Pretty average price for Thai restaurants around Davis. They give you a good amount for the price you pay; however, the portions kind of vary and aren't necessarily always consistent each visit. So far, I've only had their Chicken Pad Thai and Pad Si Ew. The Pad Thai is VERY saucey and I have definitely had better elsewhere. Good thing they included bean sprouts to help balance the flavors. It's not too terrible, but not the best. Overall, it wasn't too bad. The portions made up for it. The Pad Si Ew on the other hand.. became my new favorite dish at this place. The portions did vary like mentioned above, but I still loved it! It was served with green leaf vegetables and chopped chicken pieces. Top it off with Thai Tea, which is also excellent, and it's a great meal. Unfortunately, I did have one bad experience when I came during midnight. The chicken tasted very dry and old. **UPDATE:** One of the better thai places in Davis. There's an overload of thai restaurants in Davis for some strange reason, but this place is definitely one of the top ones. They do get busy sometimes, but they're also open late on some days which is a big plus for students. It's a clean place to eat, so that's always a big plus. Regularly, I usually go for the pad kee mao, it's probably my favorite dish here. The best pad kee mao I've had in Davis. I love the fat noodles. The pad see ew here is good also if you like something a little sweeter. The fat pork belly is a MUST try here. It comes crispy with veggies. A MUST TRY! I love the crispy shrimp rolls, basically just a shrimp wrapped into a egg roll. The papaya salad here is good too, you can get it in any spicy you like, not many places get papaya salad correct if you ask me but this place does. They have a good variety of beer here, along with the beer tower. So if you go with a few friends, and you're up for the challenge, get the tower. It's not too bad, I say 2-3 people can finish it easy, if you're a casual drinker. I recommend you dine in here and not call take out. I feel like the portions for take out are a lot smaller than if you eat at the restaurant. Plus everything taste better fresh anyway! Been here multiple times and have had a pretty consistent experience (not counting crazy peak hours)! Definitely my new go-to Thai place :) $1 THAI TEA DURING HAPPY HOUR FTW! Food: A Pad See Ew, Pad Kee Mao, and Panang Neur...Delicious! I am beef girl so have always gotten beef! First, the portions for sit-down vs take-out seems different to me. I have eaten here (20+ times) since it has opened, and personally I noticed that the portions for take-out are less. So get your money's worth by eating in because the portions are HUGE! I usually take some home afterwards. Pad see ew is sweet and flavorful- just how I like it! Thai Canteen does not skimp out on the meat or veggies portion but they also do not overwhelm my noodles. I love their wide noodles and the noodles have never been hard or undercooked. Pad kee mao is already mildly spicy! They offer levels of spiciness (no spice, mild, medium, spicy, and Thai spicy). I was adventurous and tried spicy...never again man. My stomach rolled over in pain afterwards haha. The kee mao also has an abundance of onions and bell peppers. Panang neur is pretty plain with just the sauce and beef. I think there is some kind of herb in there but beats me. Sauce is good but I did not want to pay $7 for just sauce and beef. Location/Ambiance: B Parking is horrifying in Davis downtown. That is just how it is sadly. Inside the restaurant however, they have two sections- the bar area and the restaurant sit-downs. The place is trendy with serene green color and Thai paintings. There is also one very huge TV screen near the cashier and Thai music playing in the background. Service: B- You come up to the cashier, place your order, and sit down. There is not very much interactions with the staff because they designed it that way for you to have a quick eating experience. This is a casual walk-up and order type of place where even a single diner would be comfortable with. My party had several dishes. Pad se mao was good but the rice noodle was too puffed up lacking chewiness. Pad thai was very peanutty much like eating noodles with peanut butter and way too sweet for my taste. Some dried chilli pepper cured a bit but it would not my first dish. Taste is unbalanced among the 4 components you look for in Thai cuisin. Pad Thai as common dish in Thai restaurant can also be easy dish to miss the mark. Our winner for this dinner (drum roll please...) was #7 rice dish that had basil and other vegitables. It had the best flavor with crunchyness of ingredients. As for drink, we found things floating in water. Not sure if it was the cups or the water itself. Thai Canteen is a place that I don't crave often, but when my boyfriend does, it is the most reliable Thai place to go to. The portions are good and I love that it's open so late. I alternate between the panang beef and the pad thai here. I loooove the panang beef because it's flavorful and juicy! I love how you can give a number on a scale of how spicy you want your food, which is convenient. Warning, if you order something that is too spicy for your taste, you have to commit because you can't send it back. Sometimes it takes a while to get an order, whether you're waiting on take out or sitting in, but the food is always consistent! I think the hours are great for college students who need dinner after studying late at night, have the munchies or drunchies, or whatever have you. The ambience of TC is chill and really open and spacey. There is lots of space whether you're going out with a friend or bringing a whole party. The staff here are really chill and are always of help when you need. I think it's pretty cool that they have deals here and there. I've been coming here ever since my Freshman year and 3 years later, I still love it as much as before. Although I do frequent here a lot, it's usually for take-out so I always forget to check-in, oh well, I get yummy food :]. Things are plated in nice dishes and the place is always really clean. It is a bit dim but it fits with the ambiance here. My favorite is the wall decor along the sides, I constantly tell myself that I need to get that when I get a house of my own. The staff seems to be mostly students working the front. You order your food then wait with the number for it to come, not the typical wait staff situation but it works. This place does get busy and orders will take longer than but nothing out of the ordinary (service is typically fairly fast). I'm a fairly simple person and need to break out of the habit of always ordering what I am use to. I'd usually always get green curry with chicken since I like eggplants.The flavors are always on point and the rice is always cooked perfectly (never hard or mushy). I've had the Pad Si Ew a few times, mostly stealing it off a friend's plate but the sweet sauce really does give the dish a taste that you keep wanting to have more of. The thai ice tea is usually made nicely, with a good balance of sweetness to tea (maybe a few times where it was a little sweeter than what I'm use to, but nothing that bothered me).Prices are fairly reasonable and the curry portions are usually big for me so I can always get 2 meals out of one. Decided to try out Thai Canteen after being told by some friends to try it. Its right in the heart of Downtown Davis. I knew parking would be difficult so I decided to park in the little parking structure further down since it's free after 6 pm. I went on a Friday night around 7:30 pm. It was quite busy at that time and my options were limited for seating. I decided to go to the bar because outside would be too cold. I was a little disappointed they only had 3 drinks on tap. I got my food around thirty minutes later and it was amazing! I had the pad kee mao but made vegan. There are a good amount of options that can be made vegan. My first visit here, probably because I tend to go to Taste of Thai, Thai Recipes, or Sophia's since they are usually the first places that come to mind when I'm craving Thai food in Davis for lunch. I appreciated the quick service, placing orders at the counter was a nice change from traditional sit-down places. It was busy but finding a table wasn't hard. I decided upon the pad se ew with chicken which was a generous portion. It was good, might come back again but not my first choice when in downtown. read more
