I usually stick to the familiar when I first try out a restaurant. Lucky for me, the Pad Thai here was wonderful. Ordered medium spicy with Chicken, it was a very well-prepared, delicious dish. I asked for a side of perfectly-cooked steamed rice to help me handle the heat. I sipped on a delicious hot tea (no pot provided) with the meal. All for 9.95. Definitely worth it. I'll be back. It was here where I lost my Thai food virginity, went on my first date, feasted after a grueling 8-hour exam, many-a Girl's Night, dinner before a 1 AM college party, take out after a tough day at school. This place is dear to my heart and holds so many memories aside from its delicious food and one-of-a-kind Pad Thai. Maybe not the most authentic Thai around, maybe not even the BEST Thai around (although I'd argue otherwise), but growing up, 4 years of college, on this place has made it a favorite among the University of Portland crowd. I ALWAYS order the chicken pad thai (which also comes with a few shrimps). I don't know what Thai Ginger does to make their pad thai sooo incredibly good, but I've been on a constant search ever since moving back to Hawaii to find a pad thai just like theirs. Unlike most places who tend to make their pad thai have either fish-sauce-y taste, or an overly peanut-y taste, or vinegary/sour taste, Thai Ginger does it just right. Their pad thai has a sweet, creamy, spicy, oily (just enough to make it good) taste with a hint of peanuts and fish sauce. I love how they serve it with bean sprouts for that extra crunch! Each and every time I come back to visit Portland, I MUST eat here, for old times sake. p.s. That constant search to find pad thai like Thai Ginger's? Still on the lookout. I was told by family that this restaurant had the best food, I traveled from Florida and brought the family after a funeral service. The wait staff was appalled by my questions of where the sea food was from when I asked. I do not eat farm raised or Atlantic Salmon, only Pacific salmon. I asked if I could order off menu and exchange it for chicken, they said that I could. When my entrée' came out it was hot, but it was so buttery you could not eat it. I had about 3 bites and could not eat any more. I would not have fed it to my dog. The waitress came over and I explained that it was not exactable and I advised I did not want anything else. I ordered heavy appetizers so I was fine going some place else. They did not even offer a credit for my meal. I paid a great deal of money for food and service that was so sub standard. Hope that place goes out of business, because service/ customer service is less than. Also they claim to be fresh, but that is also not the case, there are so many canned goods, sauces and prepackaged that they are not fresh. Went there for lunch. Good lunch menu (know that it's cheaper but smaller portion) but it filled us all up, just no leftovers like usual. We ordered the coconut shrimp (tasty!), the red curry (my staple), and seafood pad Thai (not as much seafood as I would have wanted but the noodles tasted really good). I cannot believe how terrible the service is. My family and I have dinner on Sundays we all agreed to Thia food so we decided to go here. It was 8:00 when we got there and after we was seated someone came to take our order we needed more time the waiter nate told us we needed to decide now cause they wont be taking anymore orders at that time it was 8:10. So we quickly decided after we got our food Nate the waiter opened the door so or food got cold and starter shaking out the carpets while we were trying to eat also he took out the trash and told the other family they needed to pay the check and take thier conversation somewhere else. Then played closing time extremley loud and stared at us until finally we were so uncomfortable we asked for boxes. After we asked for the manager he argued with us. My 6 year old little sister was scared she didnt understand why he was being so agressive. We ended up packing all our food and taking it home. Went in one evening about an hour & a half before they close, plenty of time to eat. My family sat down & we ordered. There was 5 adults & 1 infant. They began to shake out the carpets as they brought out our food out, had the front door wide open with a cold breeze blowing the rements of dirt & lord know what else in our direction. I politely asked if they would wait to shake carpets and to my surprise I was told no. I couldn't believe it. I asked them for to go boxes & the girl rolled her eyes at me. I went up to pay our bill which was 82 dollars & asked for owners number. The girl asked if I wanted to leave a tip & I said treat your customers kindly. I've had really good food and really bland food here. Pad Kee Mao and Kao Pad Ga Prau have both been so intensely flavorful and delicious--spicy, balanced, satisfying. Pra Ram and Pad Thai have both been so bland that adding copious salt only helped so much. I had Pra Ram last night, and received plain rice noodles with the peanut sauce just spooned on top, not mixed in. Both it and the Pad Thai were so bland, it seemed like a mistake. I'm not motivated to reorder those dishes. But the Drunken Noodles and Hot Basil Fried Rice are worth a return trip. Pot Stickers and Fried Spring Rolls are great, too. read more

I am new to the neighborhood and was really excited to find this place near my house. I ordered the chicken tom kha to go for $9.95. Got home and was shocked. 97% liquid, 2.5% veggies, .5% chicken. =100% disappointment For a place that doesn't serve soup with rice for $9.95, you'd think it would at least be substantial soup. The only reason why I gave more than 1 star is because the man who helped me was kind and my order was ready in 5 mins. I arrived an hour before closing, but the man and woman running the place had already started closing. Beer and wine prices were a bit high and the selection of bottled beer was mostly from Asia, not my cup of beer, I mean tea, so I had water. $4.95 for teeny tiny fried Thai Egg Rolls (aka frozen lumpia) and $10.50 for Beef Massaman Curry, $15.45 with NO TAX ... WHOO-HOO, not bad for a "decent" meal. The egg rolls were OK, but my entree arrived before I had finished my second egg roll, a pet peeve of mine, so they get dinged right off the bat, The curry was tasty enough, comparable to many similar curries I have had, but was a tad light on the beef (2-3 ounces at best) for the price. Wow, I am about to fucking blast this place. Never have I been compeled to write a review within 30 minutes of leaving it. I just tried them because they are close to my house. I ordered green curry to go and the problem didn't begin until I got home. I looked at my curry and it was soupy. It contained almost entirely bamboo shoots, something I enjoy but not with the anemic portion of peppers that accompanied. I also managed to locate two small pieces of overcooked eggplant. As I began to eat my nearly flavorless food I felt like even though this was bland there was something missing that was so basic it wasn't prepared correctly. I pulled out my menu and realized there was no basil. I firmly believe that you should not complain about badly prepared food unless you give the restaurant a chance to fix it. I called Thai Ginger up and explained the situation. The man answering the phone was unable to decide what to do so he put me on hold. When he returned he said that I should bring it in so they could fix it. I told him that I had already served myself some and he said to bring that part too. I hung up to get in the car and then it hit me, he said fix. I called back and asked him if they were going to make me a new meal or try to "fix" my current one and he told me that they would probably try to fix my current one. I told him that was unacceptable and they should prepare me a fresh meal. He apologized that I was unhappy with their solution. If my sandwich was missing a condiment that would be one thing but trying to add something in to an already cooked meal doesn't allow the flavors to combine properly. Also, that is fucking gross! I know I am the one that has touched the food but any place that is in the habit of taking possibly contaminated food from their customers into their food prep area is not a place I want to dine. read more

It's a good thing A/C directed us here, because this place does not ooze curb appeal. Which may be part of the plan. It's not a big space, but it's a surprisingly gracious room with just enough tables to max the seat count without crowding anyone. We were greeted instantly when we walked in and our waiter was both quick and friendly. The food seemed to come up pretty fast after ordering, faster than it seems to in comparable restaurants. The food. I got the pad thai, of course, because I don't know what else to order. I asked for it non-spicy and when I got it indeed there was no spice, just the slightly sweet yummy that I expect from places like PK on the north Park Blocks. As usual I can't speak to the authenticity or quality, I can only say that I really, really like it. And it was pretty good the next day, although pad thai seems to require warming up. Loves it. One concern about moving to a new city is whether there's good Thai food to be found. Sure some folk might worry about jobs, where they're going to live, transportation, safety, taxes, etc., but I'm more concerned about Pad See Ew and Gaeng Kiew Wan. Hawaii has a few decent Thai places, but not even one good Mexican place (really not even one, just an ugly refried series of disappointments--but I digress). So as long as there's at least one good place for every type of food (cause I love it all!!!) I'm a happy camper (in truth I was usually a mischievous camper--when I was eleven I unhitched an entire camp of girl scout tents while they slept and a few of them blew over during the night). Anyway, so in moving here I wasn't sure if I'd find good Thai food, but this place put those fears to rest (I really wasn't that scared foodwise Portland seems to have good everything). Thai Ginger is a cute place, pleasant but nothing special atmosphere wise. We ordered the Sample Platter (satay, egg rolls, fried tofu and wontons), Sticky Rice, Gaeng Kiew Wan w/ Seafood (Green Curry), and Pad See Ew w/ Beef (think Thai pappardelle). And I guess they even gave us two free summer rolls. The fried tofu and the Pad See Ew were outstanding. Everything else was good enough for us to want to go back and try more (Pad Thai, Rad Nah, Tom Yum, Pa Nang, Ga Ree, and Musamun). Thanks to Jedidiah C. for the great recommendation. Without a doubt, this is Pilot Nation! You will never come here and not be surrounded by UP students, lucky you! Back in my day as a pilot this place was a real treat. I always relied on someone with a car to take me since I wasn't quite down for walking back to school with a stomach full of Thai. Since returning in more recent days, I have to say I'm not nearly as much in love with this place as before. Maybe it had something to do with being a college student, having less inhibitions, and anything was better than cafeteria food. It's still not bad, they supposedly have the best pad thai...I always get pad se ew though! I will just say this place doesn't seem to be as consistent as it should be. Sometimes it's great, sometimes it's pretty meh. Sometimes it's pretty slow, sometimes it's darn quick. If you're in the area though it's definitely worth trying. This has become one of my new favorite Thai places in Portland, especially after one of my old favorites went the way of the Hindenburg...wait, no, the Titanic, because their food wasn't even spicy anymore! The atmosphere is great, if a little cozy, but has marvelous decor. The wait staff are dapper young friendly food-wielders who are fast and informative. And, there's the food... ...Their curries are simply delectable, the sort I would eat in a hell if they refused to serve me any Thai food in heaven. I've had some of my best musaman there and most undoubtedly the best panang there: the former deliciously smooth and the latter the perfect blend of sweet-tart-pungent. the vegetables are like, wok the fuck's going on! Crunchy and flavorful, which is what a vegetable cooked in a wok is supposed to be. Finish it off with some sticky rice, which fortunately isn't green - that reminds me of when Burger King had that awful green ketchup. And, the price is quite reasonable. read more

I've been in a couple of times, and didn't find anything particularly special about their food. On my first visit I tried the Yellow Curry, and on the second I had Masuman Curry. They were OK, the curries weren't particularly flavorful or interesting, although they did get the spiciness nice and hot. The service was nothing to write home about, on my first visit they were very busy and our waiter was brusque, and for our to-go order second visit the wait was ridiculous... our food wasn't ready for more than 45 minutes from our call. That's a ridiculous wait for some pad thai and curries. The interior is nice, it's small but comfortable and well-appointed. If I lived in the neighborhood, I could see myself visiting occasionally, as the food isn't bad. However, there are a ton of Thai places around town, and in my opinion this one doesn't stand out in any worthwhile way. read more

The five stars are more for my all-time favorite meal than for the restaurant as a whole. Here's why... I somehow happened upon the Pad See Ew at Thai Ginger and let me tell you, it is AWESOME. I have tested this same dish at numerous other thai restaurants around Portland and nothing comes close. (I think the main difference is that the sauce is sweeter and there's just enough of it.) Regardless, once I start eating the Pad See Ew, I cannot stop and there's little point in order anything else. I have made several other converts to this tasty delight, so it comes HIGHLY recommended.
