I did not like to food at this Thai restaurant. I have been here only once and will never go back. I usually get Pad Kee Mao when I eat Thai and my wife gets Pad See Ew. Compared to a lot of Thai restaurants I have eaten in the area, the food is below par. It was too salty, very sweet for some reason, meat was tough, and very greasy. The portion size was also smaller than other places I have been to. For the price, quality, and taste, I would rather go a few blocks around the corner to Mee Dee Thai. I love these guys! I generally eat lunch here (takeout) once or twice a week, and the food is ready in under 10 minutes every time. They serve up reliable, delicious Thai food. Some of my favs: Pad Thai (of course), Gaeng Ga Ree (yellow curry), Pineapple Cashew Fried Rice, and the Fresh Salad Rolls. Truly great Thai food. Before moving south, we used to get Thai Ginger at least once a week. They are friendly, fast, reasonably priced, and delicious. The pad thai ties for my favorite in town with Chaba Thai, and the stir fry here is also top notch. They're super flexible about adding extra broccoli or water chestnuts which is always appreciated. My lady enjoys the red curry and the drunken noodles from here, and warns that the spicy is quite hot. They are always consistent on the spiciness levels, which is nice. This place is hands down the best thai restaurant that I have ever been to! I used to live a street over and would come by every now and then for lunch. As a student I didn't budget too well and didn't have enough money to pay for a order I got to go (mind you this was before I was a regular!), the manager was really nice about it and told me I can come back later and pay him. That act of kindness definitely got me to come back for a long time! All the food here is delicious, I especially enjoy their Pad See Ew or their Seafood Special Stir Fry dish. Consistently good quality noodles and curries and staff that always recognize us and seem genuinely glad to see us and call us by name (can you tell we live just a few blocks down). They have a yummy yellow potato and carrot curry, but I almost always get the Phad See Ew with beef and their salad rolls (uncooked) with the peanut sauce. Absolutely delicious. It's hard to review a Thai restaurant because they can feel so similar at times, but on a rainy day it's a comforting place to go. Plenty of parking in the front parking lot or on Denver. Comfortable but wooden seats (bring a cushion if you have a thin bottom!) Different staff on the weekends and a very different experience and not as outstanding, in my humble opinion, as during the week. They have a busy take-out business, of course, as every Thai restaurant does. The prices are reasonable and they have cheaper lunch portions. I do agree with another reviewer. Some of their liquid dishes are a bit sparse on solids, but mostly solid fare and consistently tasty. The only thing I definitely don't like are the fried spring rolls. They are hard little buggers that seem to resent being eaten. But no problem. The salad rolls, as mentioned, are a true delight. A lot of potential. They have good lunch specials during the week. Parking can be tight during the lunch rush. The Pad Kee Mao had a nice kick with a variety of vegetables. I would suggest asking for it less sweet and less saucy and less ketchup. Typically this noodle dish isn't saucy, but they made saucy to please the local palate. Thai G is one of my fondest NoPo memories. They were there through it all, from pumpkin curry in the fall between midterms to spicy pad kee mao in the spring after clinicals. I brought pad thai and pineapple cashew fried rice to devastated friends after breakups, and shared savory salad rolls and pad see ew to celebrate the end of finals. Service can be hit or miss, never had any complaints calling ahead for take-out. I may be hundreds of miles away from them now, but they will always be my cherished speed dial #9. read more

I gave this place a shot a while back after my favorite Thai place was over run with the Last Thursday crowd. I had high hopes for them as they are located on my regular drive actually closer to my home. I got my standard Pad See Ew with tofu, and easy gage of the quality of any given Thai restaurant. However, I have to say that Thai Ginger was mediocre. Neither great, nor horrible, rather ho hum. While I will say that the staff were both attentive and friendly, in a town with so many Thai restaurant options, when the food is less than memorable a return to Thai Ginger is highly unlikely. read more

Thai Ginger has been our go-to Thai food restaurant for several years. The staff are super friendly, the space itself is clean and pleasant and never overcrowded. The food is delicious. Some of our favorites are the Pad See Ew, house special fried rice, salad rolls (don't forget the peanut sauce), and wonton soup with prawns. I've never gotten delivery from them so I can't comment on that, but whenever we dine in or take out the food is always ready in 10-15 minutes and fresh/piping hot. read more

If you like your Thai spicy, Thai Ginger's "extreme spicy" does have a really good kick. You can actually see the red chilly powder in the Curry, and it does set your mouth on fire. (This is not being sarcastic, I really do love hot fire spicy food.) I only had take-out from this place, so I can only comment on food: the vegetables are fresh, so are the meat and seafood. I wish I could give a better review/rating, but nothing here wowed me, or even met my basic expectations. The salad rolls were non-descript with a thin vinegar-sweet chili sauce. The tom yum with shrimp was decent, and had a reasonable amount of heat, but there was very little to it: shrimp, onion, and some herbs; maybe a couple mushrooms, and some huge tomato chunks, but nothing else. The pad kee mao was one of the worst versions I have ever had. Overly salty in a sweet black bean sauce, with little to no heat. I'm not sure what they were going for with this dish... My partner and I love Thai food. We moved to Portland a year ago and tried a few different Thai restaurants, but Thai Ginger is our favorite by a long shot. Oh, the yumminess. For NoPo Thai destinations, Thai Ginger's your spot--especially for carryout. They offer a pretty full menu (all the right noodle dishes, curries, and house specialities; not as much in the way of Thai salads as I like to see). The curries are lovely and rich; the noodle dishes are superb (particularly the pad Thai and pad kee mao). The prices are pretty reasonable ($6-10 for most curries and noodle dishes). The staff is very friendly and very swift and efficient. The restaurant's atmosphere is comfortable and not too frilly. And the carryout service is always right on time--they tell you 10 minutes, it's going to be exactly 10 minutes. My only word of advice? Be careful when you ask for a dish to be made spicy. I ordered a dish medium once--lemon chicken, otherwise delicious--and they didn't stir the chili paste in all the way. Hidden under a chicken breast, I didn't see it and ate a solid, hearty bite of scorchingly spicy chili paste. Discomfort for hours. That wasn't a discouragement, though--I just learned to ask for the spicy on the side. The food's great and we keep going back for more. read more

I always order Pad Thai when I go to a Thai restaurant and am a bit of a Pad Thai snob. Thai Ginger had one of the best I've had! It was just a little sweet and had a great flavor. Showed up here for some soup and rice before Last Thursday events. We ordered the thom kha gai soup, lemon grass pad Thai, and fried rice. The chicken in the soup was extremely dry, not cooked well at all. In good thom kha the chicken has an almost velvety texture due to the tenderizing during marination. The broth was decent, but not as complex as some I've had before. The rice was sort of heaped on the plate in disorder, as if the chef wasn't paying attention, and also was quite moist, probably because it wasn't day old, which is the standard in fried rice. The pad Thai was drenched in peanut sauce, without any recognizable flavors besides sweet and salty. Everything was really sweet, too much so. I can imagine that is why people come back to this place. Maybe I caught them at a bad time, but this place is probably better avoided. read more

I have been a customer for 13 years. The food is never the issue.. the food will keep you coming back, like it has for me. I have introduced Thai Ginger to close friends and family over the years, and they too have become regular customers.. but in the last year the service to minorities has declined greatly! Yesterday 2/28/18 they told my Hispanic friend and her 4 kids, who complained about the service, they can refuse service if someone seems to have attitude.. there was 2 tables besides her family, they never got a refill, no one asked how they were and when it was time to pay she had to ask for boxes and the check after sitting for at least 15mins after eating and no service. They are rude and not welcoming unless you are not a person of color. I won't return after 13 years! read more

I generally get food to go from Thai Ginger and have been eating here for a couple of years. It's convenient and decent food for the price. But lately, I've noticed the dishes taste different. I generally get pad thai and larb (minced meat served with lettuce or cabbage). My most recent order was a few days ago and I found both of my dishes bland and poorly cooked. My larb was not minced well and big chuncks of meat was stuck together. It was also missing the burnt rice and other flavors. The pad thai was more sweet than usual and was also missing something. Does anyone know if they have a new cook or something? I'm not sure if I want to go back again with my last experience. read more

Food was good. The servers were rude, unresponsive and disrespectful. I had a dirty plate so asked very nicely with a non-judgmental tone for a new one. She looked at me like I had just kicked her dog. The new plate was delivered and dropped on my table without a single word. I made a couple of compliments about the food which were met with a scowl and silence. Why do people like that work in the restaurant business if they hate people so much? I just thought zach n. was a douche for his review... and then it happened to me (yeah, I know ME! of all people!!!) I experienced a COMPLETE lack of, what I like to refer to as, 'dis-service." scene: it was moderately busy when i came in and sat down to enjoy lunch at about 1:30pm... and to my delight, I noticed that almost ALL of the 9-5ers were finishing their lunch and I assumed that I could grab a quick lemongrass soup (my fave) and a shrimp or octopus curry, because I had to be back to get the kids by 2pm. WRONG! The server came over and gave us a menu and asked about drinks, so we ordered a thai iced coffee and thai iced tea. He then went over to a table and sat down with 3 other waitstaff-ers and started eating his lunch... leaving an entire restaurant 3/4 full to ONE FUCKING WAITER! 5 minutes goes by... 10 minutes goes by... there he is still sitting and eating and ignoring while the one guy is SLAMMED with customers paying for the lunch they JUST finished and we sit drinkless and foodless for another 5 minutes. I am done at this point, so I walk up to my waiter (who is eating food before me and two other people having a late lunh) and i ask him where my iced beverages were... he then said, and I quote... "I put the order in a while ago." and turned around and kept eating... Now I could go on about the ONLY server coming out to the table and taking my order and that we finally got our tea and the fact that all was forgotten and i will be back, but wait... there is one coup de gras'... The soup was terrible... it was like someone boiled lemons and tang in a bowl and threw in a few mushrooms and some chili oil. I took two sips and that was IT! As he brought the bill i mentioned how bad the soup was and that it was not worth serving. he then brought the bill and guess what friends and neighbors? The soup was on the bill! and when pressed as to why it didn't get taken off, he shrugged his shoulders and said 'sorry it wasn't good.' Even with one extra star thrown in for condescending to open your business in No Po, this is "Everyman's thai food" that is to say, Yankee Doodle Yakisobi style noodles, etc. An exact replica of any "Thai" food you've had at 100s if not millions of other eateries. I'm beginning to wonder if all these cart/B&M Thai spots buy dehydrated kits of entire entrees, all in bulk discount, from the same retailer. How else to explain such uniformity of taste and quality??? No hard feelings, Ginger Thai. I have utterly failed to find a distinguishing identity or personaity quality that makes you stand out. And maybe that is in perfect keeping with your mission statement.... in any case, bravo..... read more

Thai Ginger was recommended to us by the staff at the Hilton, so we walked the few blocks. I had considered getting some Thai but instead settled on their sushi menu Food: Edamame was delicious and very fresh. I got a Philadelphia roll and a Spicy Tuna roll. Both were incredibly good: fresh fish, just the right amount of cucumber and avocado, and very well balanced. Plus the spicy sauce on the Tuna was just the right amount of heat. I also got miso soup, which I consider a staple of sushi dining and what I most judge a restaurant on. It had a perfect amount of tofu and greens and tasted delicious. It was served piping hot. My favorite part about the food? The plating! My sushi arrived all on one dish (a must, in my opinion) and was decorated with some awesome sauces, flowers, and typical sushi accompaniments. I was incredibly impressed by the plating design. Drink: I got their mojito, which comes in a glass mason jar with a handle I really wanted to take with me. I got it on a whim since I'm not normally a huge mojito fan but I wasn't looking for anything overly sweet. Great bartender: the mojito was DELICIOUS. And very well mixed. I really considered getting a second. Service: Our server was fantastic. He really knew the menu and totally understood that not only were we unfamiliar with the menu, but we needed some help. He gave us just enough time, wasn't overbearing, and gave us some great suggestions. If I ever go back to Vancouver, I will definitely order off the thai menu. It was fantastic! read more

I've been to Thai Ginger a handful of times and their food is excellent but I stopped going there because of their service. I would give a 4 star for their food but the service is a 2 star. It could be that I always go when the restaurant is busy but I think service should be great at all times. Even when I do take-out I don't receive a "Thank You". EVER. read more

I love this small restaurant! I wish I lived closer to visit more often. I was in town for a trade show at the Portland Expo Center, and was craving Thai. Found Thai Ginger just a few miles away. The first night I had Pad Thai that was one of the best I've had. It was so good I went back the next night and had the House Special, which was also exceptional. Service is wonderful, and the food comes out really fast, of course I was dining late in the evening, so it might be slower during the busy time. Been here about a dozen times, the food is pretty good. Not the best I have had, but with little options within walking distance and a case of the lazies this is the winner! Glad they were open on July 4th, because no one else was. I called to make sure before walking there and they told me they were open until 9, I arrived at 8:30 and was told take-out only. Thai Ginger is a regular spot, especially as a treat after a yoga class! The service is always friendly and incredibly speedy, even when the place is jumping. Check out the pumpkin curry -- this is a real favorite dish of mine and I think Thai Ginger's is one of the best around. The Pad Thai is always a big favorite when I'm with friends. If I do tear myself away from the delights of the pumpkin curry I often go for either the pad kee mao or pad sie ew since I'm a fan of the big rice noodles. The other curries are also very tasty, I think I've made my way through all of them, I just so love the big pieces of pumpkin in that curry dish that I'm always returning to it. If you're just getting a dish this can easily run under $10/person, but it is a close call between the $ and $$ rating. Note on parking -- Thai Ginger shares the "mini-mall" lot with a couple of other places so the lot can be croweded (including people parked illegally because they're just "running in"). read more

I often like to grade restaurants on a curve, clearly 5 stars would normally be reserved for a place that I don't think even exists in portland (yet) but on the relative scale Thai Ginger gets 5 stars because: -very fresh good portions, and PERFECTLY seasoned d-e-licious dishes -extremely courteous and fast staff -clean inside, though not outstanding in atmosphere, it is about a C+/B- just average, but not bad in anyway. -fast and really reliable with take out. -So maybe they should get 4 stars since there are places with better Decor, and some dishes treat the vegetables differently than I prefer, But ultimately the flavors and seasoning is spot on, food is VERY fresh, deeply infused seasonings, cheap, and served in gratuitous portions, all points that rise above the other (but well meaning) competition in North Portland, no offense E-San, making Thai Ginger a relative 5 points. read more

One of the hardest things about leaving North Portland was leaving behind Thai Ginger. Though the exterior is completely unassuming, I think this place is really a standout among Portland's many Thai restaurants. The ingredients and overall flavors are first rate. I think they also manage to balance heat and flavor incredibly well. Thai iced tea is a favorite treat of mine and the only area where I feel they fall down a bit (for really good Thai iced tea I'd recommend Saucebox). Thai Ginger is great! I'm so glad I took a chance and grabbed take-out a few months ago. Now I'm hooked. As a die-hard ChabBa fan, I'm happy to report that I can actually get great Thai right here in my own neighborhood. I've had the Pad Thai, Pad Kee Mao, spring rolls, salad rolls, and Thai iced tea. Everything has been delicious, fresh, and consistent in quality. I haven't eaten in, but I've gotten take out several times and it hasn't disappointed yet!
