Thai Island is a classic DI spot and I'm so glad they survived the hurricane damage a few years back and have kept up the quality. The owners are so friendly and always seem grateful to have your business. We have been many times but went recently and tried the new chive dumplings, they were unlike anything I've ever had before! The pan seared ones had a nice char on the outside but then were so soft on the inside. I also got the pad kee Mao, one of my favorite Thai dishes, and my girlfriend got their new dish khoa soi which was a creamy coconut curry. Both were pretty spicy for us but delicious! The decor inside is so cool too and sitting out on the front porch and watching people go by on the DI main strip of businesses is fun. I'll always love Thai Island! read more

It was very busy (Saturday night around 7pm). For drinks, we got the cold nigori sake bottle (plenty for 2) and reasonably priced. I went to this restaurant and they were out of fresh rolls. Very disappointing!. The crab rangoon and the calamari had a nice batter which was good. I ordered the Thai Island rice and it was cold and tasteless. It tastes like oatmeal. I sent it back and got the pets to you and it was flavorless. I will never go back to this restaurant ever again. When it has the guy for a military discount he gave me an excuse then he would lose money. The funny thing is that he was in the Air Force and he still didn't give me a military discount. After returning from Chiang Mai a few years ago, I never dreamed I'd find khao soi, the spicy coconutty soup endemic to northern Thailand, in my own backyard. I'm not sure if it's just a seasonal special promoted that day or will be a permanent addition to the menu. I was a little cautious though. The ambiance is simple at this small Thai restaurant. If you want the chance to try some authentic Thai food that tastes homemade, this is the place. Their menu is by QRC code, and it is nicely described for each plate. The portions are perfect for the price. Great flavor and value with the ability to try a few different items. I had lunch with my mom and sister, so we decided to share three salads for our table. We got the Nam Sod that had Minced pork, ginger, cilantro, spring onion, shallots, tossed with peanuts, and chili lime dressing. It was light, and the whole peanuts were toasted and crunchy surrounded by whole pieces of romaine lettuce. The Pla Koong (Shrimp Salad) had 4 large Grilled shrimps, shallots, lemon grass, shredded lime leaf, minced cilantro, and onion tossed with a homemade chili lime dressing. This was my favorite because it was on the spicy side and had so much flavor from the lemongrass. An off the menu item we ordered was a roasted Japanese Eggplant Salad with steamed Calamari rings. The cold broth was light and had lots of red onion slices, which also had large Romain lettuce leafs in the bowl. They no longer have lettuce wraps on their menu, but these 3 salads were served with enough romaine lettuce to be a good substitution. Technically, there was no salad dressing, but the cold broth at the bottom of the bowl was so different and delicious for each of the salads. Dinner time on a weeknight and I sat outside right away with no wait. Food came out fast with no mistakes. In my opinion the pad thai could stand to be less sweet. Checked out the downtown area to see if there were any restaurants open, as we wanted to support local business. Only a few opened back up and Thai Island was one of them. First time here. Nice little place with friendly owner and waitress. Food was delicious. Wife had Panang Curry which she enjoyed. I had Pad See Ew which was very tasty. I ordered the app. Sampler - crab Rangoon which did not remotely taste like the usual crab cream cheese filling , corn fritters which were greasy and had no flavor , chicken satay, which was very dry , and spring rolls which were edible, only because I was hungry . The coconut soup smelled bad and when I returned it , because I couldn't eat it, wouldn't take it back or exchange it . Really ? A tiny portion of $5 soup? Who does that ? This was my second time getting Thai Island for takeout (have yet to dine-in) and this was my second time ordering the Chicken Panang. Apparently I forgot that Thai Island goes heavy on the peanuts in their Panang recipe. This threw me off as it is not a common ingredient in traditional Panang curries (at least from my experience ordering it out and making it myself at home). I ordered it medium spicy and that aspect was perfectly on par. The Chicken with Rice soup had an unusual, somewhat bland flavor, but the redeeming quality was that it was chock FULL of chicken, rice, sprouts, bamboo shoots - see attached pic for evidence. Definitely worth the price of $3.50! The restaurant itself is quite cute and looked like a pretty cozy spot to bring a date, but upon closer inspection of some of the walls (just the area where my eyes defaulted to settle while I waited on my order), it may be time for Thai Island to undergo a bit of an interior facelift to help minimize the appearance of aged/unkempt areas of the establishment...in no way, shape or form do I not recommend dining at Thai Island for lunch or dinner, this was just an observation based on the duration of time I spent in one particular area. Extra points for the gentleman on the phone who provided an accurate wait time estimate. I arrived early but that was as a "just in case my food is prepared fast and ends up sitting for a while" measure. I definitely plan to try out their red curry on my next visit! read more

It's such a joy to stumble across a Thai restaurant as flavorful as this one. Located next to a bank on the main drag on Davis Islands in Tampa, this restaurant has the most intensely flavored food! Not spicy hot, just full-flavored with delightful spices. The Tom Kha Gai soup is much more flavorful than the typical Thai restaurant. And the Pad See Ew was so delightfully seasoned with an intricate blend of exotic spices that I can't wait to return with my lovely lady! Amazing little cozy Thai place on Davis Island. We started with an appetizer that had a sampling of corn cakes, spring rolls, satay and crab rangoon. The crab rangoon was awesome and there were a variety of sauces provided with the appetizer to try out. Next up was the chicken red curry. It was simply perfect -- creamy, spicy, and full of peppers and bamboo shoots! Wish there was more chicken in it but it was still tasty anyway. The service was kind of slow but I attributed it to this gigantic party that sat right next to us, so things were kind of slow. Really that's my only complaint about the place. Please the rating is for an overall. After reading the reviews and asking around town, this place came highly recomended. But my experience was not good, and first impressions are everything!! I have been going to Thai restaurants for a little while now, and this one have many dissapointments. Parking was not easy, I managed to park a block away. Not It was not rush hour lunch, this was mid afternoon, they were still busy. Asked for Thai Tea, as usual and almost received regular Tea, had to confirm with a second server. (maybe didn't enunciate enough) Got rejected very harsh when asked for the summer rolls with no shrimp. Now, if this roll is fresh, substituting the shrimp for Tofu, or just not adding the shrimp, is very simple and even cheaper! As you can see on my picture the Pad See Ew was very small amount and the plate was broken in 3 different places. The dish was good overall however the plate was not! Three big broken pieces on a plate is not safe on the health standards. This is the first time I leave a Thai restaurant hungry! The Tom Yum was mild to no spice and super small also. Truly a neighborhood friendly, cute date or family night restaurant. I have been coming here regularly since I moved to Tampa 4 years ago and have never been disappointed. The vegetarian spring rolls are my favorite, especially with the handmade sauce it comes with. I love the tom kha gai soup too, but sometimes feel like they skimp a bit on the to go orders. Pad thai is extremely different from other thai restaurants. It is pretty sweet and not as heavy on the traditional tamarind sauce. At first I wasn't too sure about it, but once I started getting it without egg I really liked it. I'm not a huge fan of the Panang curry (way too peanut heavy) here, which is a bit disappointing since that is my usual thai go-to, but I found an amazing item called the Pad Sam Rod (tamarind sauce based dish with cashews) which has taken its place. I love that I can trust all of their ingredients to be fresh since a lot of times I have seen them preparing food in the open area near the cashier. The owners are so friendly as well. They are family owned/operated and on Davis Island, so I think their higher prices are justified. The only thing I wish they had was a better phone system so that they can take care of multiple orders at the same time. Once, someone just forgot to hang up the phone and I wasn't able to call in my order. read more
